The Bolt Xtra . June/July 2013 . Volume 10
On Saturday, April 20, over 630 guests including parents, family, friends,
alumni, and supporters of Pius X celebrated BOLT 2013 “Creating A Masterpiece,” the 28th Annual Dinner/Benefit Auction in the Pius X gym and
commons area. They all attended the annual fundraiser that raises money
for the various needs of the school.
One of the goals from BOLT is to raise funds to provide a great physical
environment for all students. More funds were raised this year than last
year, with 1/3 of the proceeds designated for
the Booster Club and special projects, while
2/3 of the proceeds were designated for the
retirement of the payment on the kitchen. The
proceeds raised and returned to Pius from all
the BOLT events held the past 28 years is
almost $4.5 million.
This year, there were 398 lottery tickets sold
for $100 each, raising $39,800.00 in tickets
alone. Top sellers from the Pius X students
included: Landon Warner, 1st place; Alex
VanAckeren 2nd place; and Alexis Bryant,
3rd place.
The BOLT coordinating committee would like
to thank its donors and volunteers for making
Superintendent Father James Meysenburg
the event possible. There were over 300 parent
volunteers, along with students who sold lottery tickets, sang at the Mass before BOLT,
assisted with running bids, valet parked and
helped with clean up. There was tremendous
support from all the Pius X High School staff
as well. It has been a pleasure working with
all.
Special thanks to the coordinating committee:

& Ann Kotopka, Mark & Janet Kurtenbach,

Pro-Life Day Encourages Students To Defend Life
To celebrate life at all stages from conception to natural death, Pius X hosted its annual Pro-Life Day
on April 24. Pius X students were joined by representatives from Bishop Neumann in Wahoo and
Aquinas High School in David City. The keynote speaker for the day was Michael Spencer from the
Life Training Institute. He gave a detailed and encouraging presentation to the whole school to stir up
further enthusiasm to fight abortion. His all-school assembly was followed by a private session with
Pro-Life day attendees, during which he taught them rebuttals to the typical arguments that Pro-Choice
supporters make. Not only did Mr. Spencer have very intelligent discussion points, but he taught the
students to always use compassion when speaking about this important topic.

The students then had lunch at Valentino’s followed by an hour of prayer at Planned Parenthood. They
prayed a rosary and sang the Divine Mercy Chaplet. It was so beautiful to hear all their voices lifted in
song for the unborn! The remainder of the day included making Mothers Day cards for women in crisis
pregnancy centers and writing letters to a little girl in El Salvador that the Pius X Pro-Life Club sponsors to attend school. Special thanks to the FCT Leadership Board for planning and hosting this special
event!

Vocal Music Department 2012-2013
The Vocal Music Department had a very successful 2012-2013 school year. The department
presented four concerts, two talent shows, sang
for 11 Masses (including diocesan Masses before the school year began), and had a very successful fall musical, “Godspell”, with more than
2200 people attending, several sold out performances, and great
support and compliments from the community.
At District music contest, ALL choirs brought home Superior
ratings; Resonance, Cantabella, Sotto Voce, and Spectrum earned
straight Superiors from all of their judges – the highest rating
possible.
Spectrum show choir had a successful season, placing in finals or
highly at each competition.
Bridget Lang and Carly Moore tied for the “Best Soloist” award
at the UNL Midwest Cup (one of the largest, most competitive
competitions in the country).
Three students (Sam Baker, Griffin Knotwell, and Alec Talbott)
were chosen for All State Chorus.
Griffin Knotwell was also chosen for Wesleyan Honor Choir.
Congratulations to all the members (and all the supporters) for

Advanced Placement (AP) Testing
Advanced Placement (AP) Testing was held
May 8-15. AP classes are college-credit classes that students take while in high school and
can count as credit for college if a certain test
score is achieved at the end of the year. Courses offered at Pius
X include Biology, Calculus, English Literature, Physics, Statistics, U.S. Government, and U.S. History. These courses are
rigorous and require much of the students who take them. Each
course is followed by a very difficult national test that is graded
on a one to five scale, with five being the best. Most colleges
accept grades of three or higher and offer incoming students
from three to five college credits for each AP class. The AP
Program is administered by the Collegeboard. If your student is
interested in registering for an Advanced Placement class, please
contact the Pius X Guidance Office for more information.

started by a couple from
Oklahoma who have a son who was 11 years old when he committed suicide. He did this because he was getting bullied at
school and couldn’t take it anymore. This cause is their quest to
raise awareness and to try to prevent bullying from happening to
other children. Visit http://www.standforthesilent.org/.
I Stand For The Silent
From this day forward I promise to respect those around me as well as
respect myself. I AM SOMEBODY, and I can make a difference. I can
make another feel loved. I can be the helping hand that leads another back
to a path of hope and aspiration. I WILL NOT STAND SILENT as others
try to spread hatred through my community. Instead, I pledge to lift up
these victims and show them that their lives matter. I will be the change
because I AM SOMEBODY.

Junior Thomas Hafner, son of Dr. Gerard
and Mary Beth Hafner of St. Joseph parish,
placed 2nd on Saturday, May 4, at the Nebraska Scholastic State Individual High
School Chess Tournament held at North
American Martyrs Catholic School. Thomas
secured his 2nd place finish with three wins
and only one loss (which was to the state
champion), competing against nine other
players who are considered among the best
chess players in the state.

Thomas is a member of the Pius X Chess Club that won the State
Chess Championship in Omaha’s Division II in March. “It’s hard
to narrow what I like most about chess,” Thomas says. “The
amount of thinking that can be put into a game or position is
both enjoyable and challenging.”
Look for practices for the Pius X Chess Club in the fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school with pick-up games most days
after school in Room 274. The Pius X Chess Club is sponsored
by Pius X Science Teacher Mr. John Cox
