Just an FYI so you know what can happen to those of us who want to raise only purebred
Palominos. On Memorial Day 2015 I purchased some golden Palominos from a well-known
breeder. It wasn’t until I recently bred the golden buck I purchased to a golden doe (from the
same breeder via another Palomino breeder) did I discover that the buck is actually a hybrid

Hello Fellow Pals,
I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself
for those of you who haven't met me yet! Thank
you for giving me the opportunity to be District 9
director.
I look forward to representing our club and
promoting our breed.
I adore Palominos, they were my favorite breed
as a child and still are as an adult.
I never had the opportunity to own them until a
couple years ago. So still being new to the breed
doesn't lesson my passion for them. I own a small
rabbitry, and am grateful to finally have
Palominos in it. I will do my best to represent our
club and promote our breed,
Thank you again and I look forward to meeting
more Pals!

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well around the country. This has been a very warm summer for
me and plenty of rain. My young rabbits say they don't like the heat, not doing so well. I
have been doing about everything to keep them comfortable.
I am hoping to show more this fall. Although, I will not be able to make the San Diego
convention, as I have to work. I may try to send a couple Pals to the convention to show.
It is always nice to hear that your rabbits that you have sold are showing well at the
county fairs and open shows. Someone called me the other day that I have never met
and said they had purchased some of my Pals from another exhibitor and showed them
in a local 4H county fair and got BIS. I was so happy for them. This also gives me great
pleasure in providing other exhibitors a beautiful breed, like the Palomino.
I am looking forward to the National show in Kansas next year. I plan to attend and see a
lot of old friends and meet new exhibitors.
Good luck to all exhibitors that are planning on showing at San Diego. Have fun!
Thank
you, Mike

How to Make Your Palomino Herd Purebred
If you are interested in refining your golden herd so that it produces only golden palominos,
the first thing you need to do is keep a few of your white does and at least one white buck.
These animals will be used to breed back to any goldens that you want to keep for the
future of your breeding program. You won’t get any white kits if the two golden pals you
mate are pure for gold color.
The process is quite simple, but it will take some time (about 8 or 9 months). Take a golden
doe that you want to keep for breeding and breed her to the white buck you kept. If all of
the kits are golden, she is pure for gold so keep her. If you get any white kits from that
mating, she is not pure so do NOT keep her. Most of the kits in the two possible litters
mentioned will not be pure so you should not keep any of them. Breeders with integrity
will not sell any of those animals to other breeders without mentioning the ancestry.
Those breeders will also show the variety ‘white’ on the pedigree of those rabbits.
I only mention this because it happened to me at the Fort Worth ARBA convention 2 years
ago. I was interested in purchasing a golden pal from a breeder, but the breeder told me that
it had white New Zealand in its ancestry. I didn’t purchase the animal from the breeder.
Some wouldn’t pass up a sale, but that breeder did. That, folks, is what it means to have
integrity!
If you have a golden buck that you are interested in keeping for your herd you follow the
same process, as explained above, and mate it to a white doe. No white kits in the litter
means the buck is pure so you should keep it for your breeding program. White kits in the
litter means the buck is not pure so do NOT keep him. None of the kits produced from this
mating should be kept for breeding.
There is something I should mention at this point. In order for the outcome of those two test
crosses (white x golden) mentioned above to be as predicted (the golden being pure), the
litters must be fairly large in number. The results in a litter of 8 will have a more accurate
prediction about the golden than the results in a litter of 1 to 3. Just to error on the side of
safety with your prediction you may want to test that same cross a second time.
As I said, this process takes some time in order to get acceptable results to base a prediction
on.
