Information Sheet: Application for an Authorization to Transport Restricted
Firearms and Prohibited Firearms

Before you start…
Use this form, if you are an individual, to apply to the Chief
Firearms Officer for an Authorization to Transport (ATT)
Restricted or Prohibited Firearms.
The following information explains certain parts of the
form and will help you answer some of the questions. You
should read the instructions as you fill in your form. If you
are still unsure about a question, call 1 800 731-4000 for
assistance.
The Chief Firearms Officer of your province or territory
must approve your application for an ATT before you
may legally transport restricted or prohibited firearms.
Mail your completed application form and all attachments to
the Chief Firearms Officer of your province or territory. For
the mailing address of your Chief Firearms Officer, please call
1 800 731-4000 or visit our Web site.
You may also apply for an ATT by telephone. Please call
1 800 731-4000 in Canada and the USA or 1 506 624-5380
outside Canada and the USA.
A - Personal Information
You may include any number of firearms on this
application, but you must be transporting all the firearms for
the same reason.
If you are transporting a firearm for more than one
reason, you must fill in a separate application form for each
reason.
If you are applying for more than one ATT, you must fill in
a separate application form for each ATT you are requesting.
Non-residents must obtain an ATT to temporarily import
restricted firearms into Canada. For further details see
Section A - Personal Information, of this Information Sheet.
Prohibited firearms cannot be imported into Canada.
If you need additional space, list all information requested
on a separate sheet of paper, add your name and licence
number to the top of each sheet and attach the sheet to your
application.

Box 1
If you are not a resident of Canada and hold a valid Canadian
firearms licence and registration certificates for the restricted
firearms you are transporting into Canada, complete this
application to apply for an Authorization to Transport (ATT), or
call 1 800 731-4000 in Canada and the USA or 1 506 624-5380
outside Canada and the USA.
If you are not a resident of Canada and are using a
"Non-resident Firearm Declaration" (RCMP GRC 5589) to
temporarily import restricted firearms into Canada, please call
1 800 731-4000 in Canada and the USA or 1 506 624-5380
outside Canada and the USA to apply for an ATT.
Boxes 3 and 4
If you have moved or will be moving soon, print your new
residence address in Boxes 3 a) to h). Indicate the date your
new residence address comes into effect in Box 3 i). If your
mailing address is different from your residence address, print
your mailing address in Boxes 4 a) to f). Indicate the date your
new mailing address comes into effect in Box 4 g).
If your mailing address is the same as your residence address,
put a check mark in the "same as home address" box and
leave Boxes 4 a) to g) blank.

Canadian Residents Permanently Importing Restricted
Firearms
If you are a resident of Canada permanently importing a
restricted firearm, you are not required to complete Box 5 Firearm Registration Certificate Number. You must provide the
Firearm Identification Number (FIN) in Box 6.
Boxes 5 to 7
List all the restricted and prohibited firearms, including
prohibited handguns, that you are planning to transport. Print
the firearm registration certificate number in Box 5. Print the
Firearms Identification Number (FIN) for the firearm in Box 6. If
the firearm you are applying to transport belongs to someone
else, print the person's licence number in Box 7. If the firearm
belongs to you, leave Box 7 blank. If you need more space to
list firearm information, list the information required in Boxes 5,
6 and 7 on a separate sheet of paper and attach it to your
application form.
a handgun with a barrel length of 105 mm (4.1 inches) or
less;
a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 25 or 32 calibre
ammunition;
a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make it less than
660 mm (26 inches) in overall length;
a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make the barrel
length less than 457 mm (18 inches) where the overall
firearm length is 660 mm (26 inches) or more;
an automatic firearm and a converted automatic firearm;
any firearm prescribed as prohibited.
Certain short-barreled, 25 and 32 calibre handguns have been
exempted from the definition of a "prohibited handgun" For a

Web site.

Put a check mark in the box that describes the reason you are
applying to transport your firearms. You may check only one
box. If none of the reasons apply, put a check mark in Box 8 o)
and print the reason beside it. If your reason for transport
requires the licence number of the business or individual and
the licence number is unknown, please provide the name of the
business or individual.
Print the time of day when you will be transporting the firearms.
Use the 24-hour clock. Space is provided for two time slots (for
example, if you go to target practice on Wednesdays and
Saturdays, you can insert both time slots). If you need more
space, use Box 11 f).
Box 11
Boxes 8 c), i), l), m) and n) apply only if you are transporting
restricted firearms or prohibited handguns. They do not apply
to other prohibited firearms. The following definitions may help
you to complete this section.
Put a check mark in the box that shows how often you will be
transporting your firearms. If you are applying to transport your
firearm only once (for example, to bring it home from a point of
entry after you have imported it), put a check mark in Box
11 a). If you will be transporting the firearm on a regular basis
(daily, weekly or monthly), put a check mark in the appropriate
box. If you check « weekly », include the days of the week you
will be transporting the firearm in Box 11 f) "Details". If none of
the boxes describe the frequency with which you will be
transporting your firearm, put a check mark in Box 11 e) and
provide an explanation in Box 11 f). You may also use Box
11 f) to clarify other information about the dates and times of
transport.

Transport Reasons for Non-residents
If you are a non-resident, the reason for transporting your
restricted firearms into Canada must be selected from Box 8 k),
m) or n). If you have another reason for transporting a
restricted firearm into Canada, put a check mark in Box 8 o)
and provide further details in the space provided.

described below as being restricted or prohibited.
Box 12
A restricted firearm is:
a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm;
a semi-automatic, centre-fire rifle or shotgun with a barrel
length less than 470 mm (18.5 inches) that is not prohibited;
a rifle or shotgun that can fire when its overall length is
reduced by folding, telescoping or some other means to less
than 660 mm (26 inches);
any firearm prescribed as restricted (including some long
guns)

The "place of registration" refers to the address at which you
keep your firearm. This should be the address you provided
when you registered your firearm (for example, your home).
Complete Box 12 "Place of Departure" only if you are
transporting your firearm or handgun from a place other than its
place of registration. The "place of departure" may be different
from the place of registration. For example, you could be
transporting a firearm from a firearms business after having it
repaired. If you are applying to transport the firearm or
handgun from its place of registration, leave Box 12 blank.

Box 13
Print the name and complete address of the place to which you
will be transporting the firearm. If you are taking it to two or
more places, provide the same information in the same order
on a separate sheet of paper and attach it to your application.

The person completing the form must sign and date the
application.

It is an offence under section 106 of the Firearms Act to knowingly make a false or misleading statement, either orally or in writing, or to knowingly fail
to disclose relevant information, for the purpose of obtaining an authorization.
