Today’s Readings
1. In Isaiah 55:1-3, the Lord invites the thirsty and hungry to eat without cost so
they can live and be renewed in an everlasting covenant.
2. Psalm 145 reminds us that “the hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our
needs.”
3. Matthew 14 contains the famous story of the multiplication of the loaves
and fishes. Jesus “withdrew” to a “deserted place” to grieve the loss of John
the Baptist. Still thousands of people followed Him. The large crowd hungered for Jesus; the
disciples were worried about food. Jesus told the disciples to feed them from their resources.
They protested that they had so little, yet were surprised by the leftovers. Jesus still feeds the
multitudes. The bread of life has not yet run out.
4. Do we believe that the Lord can satisfy us and answer our needs? There are many stories telling
us that the Lord does this even today. Do you have a story to tell?
5. Romans 8:37-39 is a strong reminder that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. There
are no obstacles to God loving us. The only obstacles are those we place to receiving it.
6. Our first readings for the weekdays come from the prophets Jeremiah, Nahum, and Habakkuk.
They are powerful reminders of the justice and the love of God. God lets the people experience
punishment for their sins and promises restoration. God promises destruction for the enemies
of His people. Above all, as we hear in Thursday from Jeremiah 31:31, God will make a new
covenant with His people when He writes His law upon their hearts and will forgive them and
remember their sin no more.
7. The Gospels from Matthew 14:13 tell the transition from the death of John the Baptist and the
miracle of the loaves and fishes to the growing realization of who He is as the Son of God, the
Messiah. However, tHis leads to His revelation of His death and resurrection and the need for
His disciples to carry their own crosses. Carrying on His mission requires great faith in Him.
Other Issues
1. ST. BERNARD/ST. TERESA TRANSITION TEAM – The team met at St. Bernard to continue
its work of sorting through the details necessary to help Fr. John MacQuarrie become pastor of
our two parishes. Our pastoral region is a COLLABORATIVE one. This means the members of
both of our independent parishes become partners in working together so that both parishes
remain vibrant and together contribute to a vibrant Catholic presence in Springfield. Two key
things are necessary: 1) We think of ourselves as part of the larger Catholic community. This
means not associating being Catholic with only one church. Many people attend a church not
“their own” as is convenient for them. Holy Communion is taken to all Catholics in a facility by
ministers of one church. It is the celebration and reception that is significant – not with who or
where it occurs. 2) We stop listening to rumors and get facts. Rumors and conjecture create a
hostile environment. No information is being withheld from the parishioners. Care is taken to
assure that both parishes make announcements at the same time. Neither parish is closing. Nor
is the Limestone campus of Catholic Central any time soon. The next meeting is August 21 at St.
Teresa. Questions/rumors/observations to [email protected]
2. CONSTRUCTION REPORT: The rains have slowed progress since it is dangerous for workers
to work around so much steel/rebar in bad weather. Last Sunday, you could see the gravel
foundation smoothed for the floor. Walls are next.
3. IMMIGRATION SITUATION: Among the goals advocated for many years by our bishops for
immigration reform has been family reunification. That goal was motivated by the desires of a
number of immigrants as well as our own history as a nation over many years. That fundamental
human desire expressed many times before in our history has been manifested by the influx of
children at the borders. Our fore-bearers often sought to leave bad conditions in their countries
and then bring their families over. Please advocate for the kind of change in the law that makes
following it preferable to breaking it. Immigration law is a civil law. Laws that do not work have
to be changed.
4. FINANCIAL REPORT – Please read the insert. Thank you for your generosity.
5. BOOKRACK IN FR. COLLINS HALL; CD racks at Limestone entrance and behind altar: Please
take advantage of these aids to continuing religious education and preparation to teach/reach
others, especially our children. What is taught in the classroom needs to be reinforced at home.
Adult religious education is an ongoing process. The books and CDs are meant to assist in that
process.
6. BETTY BOHN: REST IN PEACE – This lovely lady was a mother of seven, grandmother of 18 and
a great-grandmother. She was active on the council at Grand Court, loved to sew, created beautiful
wreathes. She fulfilled a lifelong dream to ride a hot air balloon on her 80th birthday 6 years ago.
7. NEMESIA CARDOSA: REST IN PEACE – At 96, our oldest participant in the Hispanic
community, Nemesia died surrounded by her loving family: 7 children, 29 grandchildren, 52
great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. She planted and harvested at several
local farms and at age 70 became a proud US citizen. She will be buried in Texas.

providing scholarships for students who wish to attend a
Catholic college.

Message from Pope Francis
In the Gospel parable of the wheat and the weeds, Pope
Francis’ homily provided a couple of insights.
1. Evil (weeds) in the world comes from the enemy, not
God.
2. With patience and mercy God goes into the “field” of
life of every person. He always forgives us IF we go
to Him. In facing destructive weeds in the world, the
Lord’s disciple is called to imitate the patience of God,
to nourish hope with the support of indestructible trust
in the final victory of good, that is, of God.
Let us ask Our Lady, our Mother, to help us to grow in
patience, in hope, and in mercy with all brothers and
sisters. (Vatican.va/angelus)
