Welcome From The Alumni Relations Officer
Nearly one year into this role and it has been such a privilege to meet and learn about so many interesting people through the Old
Helenians’ network. To share the interesting stories I hear about in my role, each edition will have a feature article about a member
of our Alumni whose work or vocation is an inspiration to us all. This edition’s feature article is on Johanna Higgs (Class of 2000)
whose work as a Development Anthropologist is truly fascinating. It was a pleasure to meet Johanna when she was in Perth earlier
this year and hear first hand about her research into the culture that child soldiers grow up in and the initiatives Johanna has
undertaken to make change in countries where women need access to education. I hope you enjoy Johanna’s story.
This year I have been incredibly fortunate to have Helena College parent and current Deputy Chair of
Council, Michelle Alton, working with me on a volunteer basis. Michelle’s support with updating and
maintaining the Old Helenians’ database and getting messages through to past students via Facebook has
made it possible for this edition of Helena Connection to reach more of our Alumni. Michelle is such a joy to
work with and I would like to extend my gratitude for the time she generously offers each week. Enjoy the
June 2014 edition of Helena Connection, and please contact the Alumni Relations Officer if you’d like to
share any news or to be featured in future editions.

Your first reunion will be a BBQ breakfast held at the canteen undercover area on Friday, 8 August at
7.30am. Catch up with your classmates and teachers over a breakfast. Stay on and help out at the Interhouse Athletic Carnival scheduled for that day. If you attend please rsvp.
Class Of 2004 – 10 Year Reunion
Remember the letter you wrote to yourself as a leaver in 2004? We will return it to you at your 10 year
reunion. Curious? Let’s make it happen! We are currently seeking a well-connected socialite from Class of
2004 who would like to coordinate the 10 year reunion. The Alumni Relations Officer will support you with a
contact list, Facebook event page, invitation to email and photos from our archives department. You would
just need to choose the location and get the word out. Keen? Contact Alumni Relations Officer. In the
meantime, connect with Helena College Facebook page to be sure you’re contacted when the date and
venue are announced.
Class Of 1994 – 20 Year Reunion
In the past we have held the 20 year reunions at the College, however it is often difficult for graduates to
attend as many of them are now living outside of Perth. So, this year we will be trialing a Facebook reunion.
We invite past students from the Class of 1994 to add their photos from College days and invite their
friends from that year to join! Let’s see if you can entice some of your classmates to join Facebook for
some reminiscing! To join in, send a friend request and message that you would like to be invited to join the
Class of 1994 Closed Group. If your name has changed please let us know. We will forward an invitation to
you.

Johanna Higgs (Class Of 2000) Development Anthropologist And Co-Founder Of
Project MonMa
I was born in Mt Isa, Queensland but lived in the US and South Africa before coming to
Perth when I was eight. I went to Helena College Senior School and when I was 19,
decided to set off into the world to travel. I have explored many parts of Africa, Latin
America, Europe, Asia, the Carribean, the Pacific and the Middle East. These travels
have shaped me in many ways, including the work I have chosen for my profession – a
trip to the Balkans was fundamental in this decision. I remember going to Kosovo – not
long after the war had ended – and being shocked at the debris, the bullet holes in the
walls, by the tanks rolling down the street and the UN soldiers on the streets, but it was
an image of a little boy that really stuck with me. He was sitting in a pile of rubble
playing with a toy truck and I remember thinking, ‘No little boy should have to play in a
Johanna Higgs
pile of rubble’. I then decided I wanted to work in child protection in war zones. I then
returned home to study Anthropology and Politics and James Cook University in Cairns.
I went on to do Honours in Anthropology and wrote about child soldiers in Northern Uganda, where I had spent five months working
with former child soldiers. Having decided I wanted to be a Development Anthropologist, I commenced a Masters in International
Development at Deakin University in Melbourne. I did this online while travelling through Latin America. I have also worked in the
Philippines, Mongolia and China in various areas of development. I am currently completing my PhD in Anthropology at La Trobe
University in Melbourne and I am studying the militarization of child soldiers in Colombia. My travels have also shaped me in
another way, highlighting the incredible discrimination and levels of abuse that women, all around the world, are having to face on a
daily basis. I have experienced this personally and spoken with many, many women and heard their stories. Disgusted yet
determined, I want things to change.
I was inspired to start my own project for women called Project MonMa and we are working on helping women in war-affected
communities in central Africa gain in an income. We are planning to start a scholarship programme for women to go to university
and are running discussion groups and awareness raising activities all around the world. Our next project will be in Iraq and will
focus on honour killings and we will be holding discussion groups in Dubai and Bahrain. I believe that if women stand together, and
support each other, things will change. After all, how can it not? We are one half of the population. My goal is contribute to the
international movement for change for women. Editor’s note: Johanna invites all interested and determined advocates for change
for women in developing countries to take action. A simple and local initiative is to host an afternoon tea, at which you can offer
information about Project MonMa and sell the beautiful handmade beads made by women’s collectives in Northern Uganda.

Lauren French (Class Of 2007)
Lauren has been rewarded as the number 1 goal umpire in the WAFL and represented WA on Saturday 24 May, in Sydney, in the
game between the WAFL and the NEAFL (North East Australian Football League). An outstanding achievement and one that will
take her closer to the cherished AFL spot.
Savanna Schimmel (Class Of 2013)
Savanna’s football prowess saw her and 5 other Swan Districts team mates win a spot
in the Western Australian team to compete in the Youth Girls National Championships in
Canberra in May. The team outclassed the Victorian side (who have won the

Angus Cunningham (Class Of 2013)
Bound for South Africa to perform with Bedouin Sea as the supporting act for DIRE
STRAITS. When we connected with Angus to ask him about this venture, this is what
he had to say… ‘On Friday, 27 June, 20,000 avid listeners, fans and fanatics will be
eagerly waiting for The Straits to hit the stage…Luckily enough I’ll be out back with
the lads from Bedouin Sea bantering over which Stratocaster Knopfler will feverishly
smash first. Although the idea of touring South Africa with the iconic British rock
band, DIRE STRAITS may mean more to your parents, I can assure you its sort of ‘a
big deal’ within modest terms! The show, set in one of Johannesburg’s largest
stadiums, is fundraising for endangered white rhinos, raising awareness towards
illegal poaching in Africa’s regions. Followed by a two week tour and a few more
shows, I could not be more excited to share such an amazing experience alongside
my band mates and friends.’ Your can follow Bedouin Sea on their travels by clicking
here.
Old Helenians On Campus
How many Old Helenians work at Helena College? It seems that some people just love this community so much they find their way
back here. There are at least seven graduates that now call Helena home as staff members. This edition of Helena Connection we
hear from Lyndsey Moffitt and Robby Myers.
Look out for future stories from other Old Helenians on campus:

Lyndsey is a Maths Teacher in the senior school. Here Lyndsey shares some of her school
memories and the pathway she took after leaving Helena in 1994 as a student and later
returning as a teacher.
As I walk the grounds on lunch duty, I think about my time at Helena College – everything
strangely familiar triggering great memories of inspiring teachers and lifelong friends.
In 1990, when I was a Year 8 student at Helena College, there were only classrooms 1-6
and the science labs. Now when I teach maths in room 5, I remember it being the Home
Economics room, making a traffic light sandwich or sewing a pencil case. Or perhaps I
remember the time the boys went around room the room with cotton, quietly tying
everyone to their seats. When I walk in room 3, I remember Sir slamming down the ruler
and then the numerous lessons spent reading the Time magazine covers that circled the
ceiling. The language office was the computer room when I was here, filled with Apple
Mac computers, and I spent the majority of my upper school maths classes in what is now
a tiny office. There have been many changes over the years as the school evolved from a
small school to the college it is today.
I graduated Helena College in 1994 and headed to the University of Western Australia to
study Engineering and Commerce. I completed this degree then decided that teaching
was what I really wanted to do and completed a Graduate Diploma in Education, following in the footsteps of my mum, Helen
White, also a Mathematics teacher at Helena. I worked at another school for 9 years before leaving in 2009 to have my daughter
Emily. We decided to move back to the Hills area and before long I came back to Helena as a part time teacher. A couple of years
later I had my son Thomas and again returned as a part time teacher. The Helena connection continues this year with Emily now in
Kindy at Helena.
Robbie Myers (Class Of ’96)
Robbie was a student at Helena for 6 years starting in Year 7 at the Junior School in 1991 and graduating Year 12 in 1996. He now
works in our outdoor education program.
After “leaving school” I spent the first year doing a Traineeship in Outdoor Recreation
with Andrew Lee from Wilderness Playgrounds. As part of this I was working 2 days a
week at Helena as the Assistant Outdoor Education Teacher. Since then I continued at
the College 2-3 days per week, until 2007 when I was employed in the full time position
of Senior Outdoor Education Instructor. In 2010 I also accepted the role of Camps
Coordinator, which has been challenging but very rewarding.
Our Outdoor Education program at Helena has expanded quite a lot and has involved
activities such as; white water and sea kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting,
abseiling and climbing, high ropes course, caving, scuba diving, sailing and power boat
handling and training students for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Slightly more
diverse than when I was a student.
As well as this over the years I have been working casually as an Outdoor Instructor for
many other outdoor companies doing more adventurous things such as raft guiding for
white water rafting trips on the Lower Murray River.
Robbie Myers
Outside of work, my hobbies include white water kayaking (playboating/freestyle), rock
climbing, fishing, four wheel driving and scuba diving.
In January 2005 I married my beautiful wife Stephanie, on Goode Beach in Albany (You
may have seen her in the Old Helenians in “that stunning red dress”). We now have two beautiful boys; Cooper (3 years old) and
Oliver (6 months old). We also still have our lovely dog, Dingo, who we all adore. We own a small house in Kalamunda that we are
now looking at extending to accommodate the family.

BROOKS, Kai
After returning from my year abroad in Japan during my gap year, I commenced study at Curtin. I am three years
into my four year double degree in Marketing and Japanese, which I am enjoying more and more as I go. Currently
I’m earning some coin from Crown Perth, working as a sommelier, culinary expert and order taker. I’m looking
forward to travelling the globe, settling down with the girl of my dreams and getting old. My memories of Helena are
all too clear and they were some of the best times of my life!
Kai Brooks
BUNCE, Robyn
Since leaving Helena I worked for six months then moved to America for two years as an Au Pair –
experiencing all of America from New York to Las Vegas. I then left to go to England and see some sights
and visit family. I then got a job stewarding on a motor yacht in the South of France last summer, and in the
last six months I have had a job as a chalet host in Chamonix, France. There I have made some really great
friends and have learnt to snowboard. I am excited to go back in December for another winter season and
get up the mountain again! As for the next few months, I will be travelling to the British Channel Islands to
work for the summer on Herm Island. I plan to be travelling for a while and to try to convince Roxy Oliver to
come and visit me wherever I am in the world!
Robyn Bunce
CHIPPER, Constance
After graduating many moons ago, I went on exchange to Finland for a year, travelling briefly throughout Western Europe,
Scandinavia and Russia. Upon my return, I studied a semester of Urban and Regional Planning, decided that wasn’t the right place
for me and I am now studying geography and English at UWA, with the intention of becoming a high school teacher. Recently I
went on a safari to East Africa for three weeks and have much bigger dreams of more travel.
CLIFTON, Tessa
I am in my final year of physiotherapy at Curtin, doing an Honours project on what compromises and what
improves motivation for physiotherapy clients. I have just found out I have passed the GAMSAT and am
applying to universities in Perth and Melbourne to study Medicine. Editor’s note: GAMSAT is designed to
assess the capacity to undertake high-level intellectual studies in the medical and health professional
programmes. Quite an achievement – congratulations Tessa! Since finishing school, I have travelled
Tessa Clifton
throughout Belgium, England, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Germany, and backpacked
throughout Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. I moved out of home 10 months ago and have been
living and working around Mt Lawley. At the end of this year I am hoping to explore Turkey and take a few months off before finding
a real job, or perhaps moving to Melbourne for studies. Advice for school leavers? Take a gap year. I wish I did. Tessa obviously
knows how to balance her intellectual studies with getting out here and exploring the world and the creatures in it. Pictured is Tessa
at Tiger Kingdom in Chiangmai, Thailand, when she was travelling in 2013. In this encounter the tigers (who are cared for by
humans from birth, so they are ‘tame’) started play fighting in the enclosure. ‘Even the trainers became worried,’ shared Tessa, ‘so
we had to lie still on the ground and not make eye contact for 5mins then were rushed out.’

FERNIHOUGH, Lauren
I have travelled to Sydney and Bali. I have received my Cert III in Business at a mining company and have just completed a Cert III
in Children’s Services. I am now starting an apprenticeship on the mines. I am still unsure of what career path I want to take but am
willing to give everything my best until I find it.
PAVLOVIC, Daniel
I’m currently studying Art at Central TAFE, drawing in particular. In 2012 I started my own t-shirt business,
Daniel Ink, using my own drawings (see our article on Daniel in the Dec 2013 Helena Connection), I sell the
the shirts at markets and online. Part of the proceeds from my business are donated back to the Centre for
Cerebral Palsy. I recently took my business to Paddington Markets in Sydney and am looking forward to
going to Melbourne in the near future. It keeps me pretty busy! I am still playing State wheelchair
basketball.
Daniel Pavlovic
PURVIS, Emily
Emily Purvis
Since graduating in 2010, I dived straight into a double degree in Law and Commerce at University of
Western Australia. I am now in my fourth year of study. In August this year, I will be moving to Hong Kong to
study law and travel around Asia. I have a keen interest in business within the Asia-Pacific and I hope to one
day to practice law in Hong Kong. Through studying language throughout my time at Helena, I still speak
Indonesian fluently and travel back frequently to visit friends and to volunteer. I am also a member of the
Red Cross Advisory Council and work to inform the community about issues affecting young people. I am
grateful for my time at Helena, in particular for teaching us the importance of learning language. I am
learning to speak mandarin and hope to continue my language studies in Hong Kong.
SWERLOWYCZ, Amy
Since graduating from Helena, I have been lucky enough to travel to Thailand, Bali, France, Netherlands,
Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy as well as Japan for the Old Helenians’ ski
trip in January this year. I completed a Bachelor of Science at UWA last year, and have since started postgraduate pharmacy, meaning the end of my student life is finally within sight.
Amy Swerlowycz
WOLFE, Jake
Since leaving Helena College I have been studying at UWA and recently completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in
Finance. I will formally graduate later this year. During my university breaks I have spent some time travelling and this has included
a snowboarding trip to Queenstown in New Zealand in 2012 with fellow Old Helenians, Bruno and Dre. I have gained various
professional experiences including a summer internship at PWC in their Specialist Tax division and in early 2014 I participated in a
UWA business school programme where I studied at UCLA in the United Stated for nine weeks. I also undertook an internship at a
boutique investment Bank in Santa Monica whilst living in Los Angeles. This opened many doors for me and I recently gave a
speech at the American Australian Association Benefit Dinner in front of a large number of bureaucrats and business executives.
The plan now is to travel to some more (snow-capped) destinations, before completing my Honours in Finance in 2015.
WOOD, Savannah
I’m currently in my third year of a BA (Performance Studies) at Curtin University. I’ve been in several major theatre productions

including one at this year’s Perth Fringe World Festival, and I’ve just finished directing my first production.
My dream is to start up my own theatre company and travel the world performing and creating new work.

The Library
What would any school be without a library? No longer a silent room with shelves of dusty books that no one picks up – a library is
the hub of the school. It is place for expanding your mind, escaping with your favourite novel, catching up with the latest magazines,
playing games, meeting friends, getting some extra-curricular help. The JS library was first officially established with it’s own room
in 1983. It was opened by Cyril Gare, the Chair of Council who was accompanied by a Mrs Di Procter sounding the Helena gong.
Junior School Library opening
Junior School 1983 – Miss Hington and Debbie
The SS Library started life as a few shelves in the back of one of the classrooms with most of the books being donated. In 1992
Judi Jagger was employed as our first Teacher-Librarian and in 1993 a new library building was built.

The senior school library 1991
Most of the initial resources, including sets of encyclopaedias, a cd-rom drive and a computer were the result of P&F fundraising.
This was also the year that the Helena College Library Fund started enabling the Helena community to help build this important
resource.
Senior School library 2014
The library has continued to grow over the years both in size, with a library extension in 2003, and in resources and today is a
dynamic, welcoming and well used space in the school. Resources now expand beyond the building into the virtual world – with an
online catalogue, e-books, links to websites and the use of Clickview, which allows recorded TV programmes to be accessed
anywhere. The libraries at Helena have grown, adapted and expanded along with the school itself.
