Tournament raises
The 16th annual Maimonides RBC Dominion
Securities Golf Tournament was held on Thursday,
June 7th 2007 at Elm Ridge Country Club. A little
rain didn’t dampen any spirits as we raised an
Nancy Rosenfeld, Maimonides Executive Director Barbra Gold,
Elaine Ouellet
excess of $320,000 in one of Montreal’s premier
fundraising events.
All of the golfers, sponsors and generous donors
showed their commitment to the Suite Dreams
Capital Renovation Campaign. This project,
already underway, will see the total refurbishment
of all of the residents’ rooms with dramatic
changes to furniture, lighting, flooring, closets and
bathrooms. Funds from last year’s tournament
have already been put to good use with
renovations of two full floors completed and work
on the four remaining floors well underway. This
project will be completed a full 2 years ahead of
schedule thanks to the generosity of our donors!!!
Putting on a successful golf tournament is a huge
undertaking. It is a phenomenal collective effort by a
wonderful team of caring and dedicated individuals.
Maimonides says thank you to every one who
helped make the 2007 tournament a success. We
look forward to next year’s event on June 5th 2008,
at Elm Ridge Country Club.

TO OUR

THEIR SUPPORT
THIS YEAR.
CENTRE OF
EXCELLENCE
Maimonides leads the way in
geriatric care
Thank you to the entire Maimonides community
for helping us achieve outstanding results in
the Canadian Council on Health Services
Accreditation (CCHSA) accreditation survey.
In November 2006, a team of surveyors
from the CCHSA met with Maimonides Quality
Improvement Teams, focus groups, family
members, residents, volunteers and staff in order
to assess the standards of quality at the Centre.
Garnering high praise for the quality of care
given to its residents, Maimonides Geriatric Centre
subsequently received a glowing accreditation
report and is fully accredited for another three
years.
Listed at right are some
of the highlights that
were acknowledged by
the CCHSA Accreditation
surveyors.

ANNUAL
REPORT
Centre Highlights
Looking back
I Maimonides continues to work in partnership with Jewish
Eldercare Centre. There is some cross-representation on the two
Boards of Directors, several committees and the senior
management team at Maimonides is now managing Eldercare.
I Maimonides received a glowing accreditation report from the
Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA)
and is fully accredited for another three years. The CCHSA cited
Maimonides restraint-free policy as a leading practice for the
entire country.
I At the Annual General Meeting, Murray Goodz, chairman of the
Building and Maintenance Committee, was awarded the
Outstanding Service Award.
I A new strategic plan was adopted by the Board of Directors and
reflects the direction that Maimonides is committed to moving
towards in the next 5 years.
I Maimonides won the 3M Health Care Quality Team Award,
one of the most prestigious health care awards in Canada, for its
Fall Prevention Program.
Users Committee member Thérèse Ohana visits with her mom, 4 th floor resident Solange Ohana.
I Maimonides was chosen by the Canadian Association of Wound
Care as one of five pilot sites in Canada for the pressure ulcer
awareness program.
I The Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign is in full swing,
two full years ahead of schedule.
I The research activities for the year included the completion of
six studies with three still ongoing; twenty-six presentations in
Quebec, Canada and internationally by our medical, nursing,
professional, and research teams and several publications in
different medical and scientific journals.
I Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services
was recognized with the Professional of the Year award from the
Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) of North America.
I Maimonides Geriatric Centre ended the year 2006-2007 with a
balanced budget.

DONOR NEWS
The power to care
BURSARIES OFFERED TO STAFF AT
MAIMONIDES GERIATRIC CENTRE
During National Nurses Week, the Maimonides Foundation gave out $30,000 in
bursaries to Maimonides staff who wish to further their education and upgrade
their skills by registering for more advanced studies or to take part in the Canadian
Nurses Certification Program. This year, thanks to a generous gift from the Shapiro
family, even more staff had the opportunity to further their education. Eighteen
members of the Maimonides team are recipients along with a student from McGill
University interested in pursuing a career in Geriatric Nursing.
This is the fifth year that bursaries have been presented. They have proven to be a
way to increase staff morale and successfully retain nursing staff. “Maimonides is
proud to have competent, dedicated staff who keep their knowledge on the cutting
edge. Thanks to these amazing people, we are able to provide exceptional care to

and Clinical Services.
Bialik students give to Maimonides
Grade six students from JPPS-Bialik donated $920.00 to the Maimonides Geriatric Centre
Foundation. The money was raised during the Morning Of Silence – Action Is Key (M.O.S.A.I.K.),
for which the entire grade remained silent for a morning in solidarity with those who do not have
a voice. The project is designed to help students realize that a single voice – theirs – can make a
difference.

ART FOR HEALING FOUNDATION
Maimonides continues its growing partnership with the Art for Healing
Foundation. Art galleries are being hung throughout the Centre thanks in large part
to generous donations by several local artists and collectors. The latest “Art for
Healing” gallery has been completed on the fourth floor. The Evelyn Gold Gallery,
entitled, “I've Walked Down That Street Before”, is a collection of works beautifully
painted and generously donated by artist Evelyn Gold. These paintings depict
places where Evelyn and her family have lived over the years. This collection also
includes a number of familiar Montreal landmarks that hold a special place in her
heart. The use of soft pastels has provided yet another truly soothing and “healing”
art gallery for everyone at Maimonides.

YOU ARE THE KEY
TO OUR SUCCESS
Collaborating together for
Suite Dreams
Gail and David Auerbach created an endowment fund at Maimonides on
the first anniversary of the passing of Gail’s father, Harold Ulrich. “My mom
is now a resident at Maimonides and we are thrilled with the care she is
getting. This is a good opportunity to honour my father’s memory and at the
same time show our appreciation for what is being done for my mother,”
says Gail.
The Auerbachs asked their friends and family for contributions to the
endowment fund in Harold’s memory and the response was overwhelming.
Over $10,000 was raised toward the Suite Dreams Capital Renovation
Campaign which will enable Maimonides to name a chart room in Harold’s
memory.
“By pooling our resources, we were able to take the generous
contributions of numerous individuals and accumulate enough money for
a dedicated chart room. It’s important to know that this is not only for
individuals contributing $7,200, but available to people willing to put a
group of donors together to support Maimonides.” says David.
To learn more about how you can make a difference, visit our website.
The Foundation Board of Directors recently held a retreat at the
Forest and Stream Club to take the Suite Dreams Capital
Renovation Campaign to the next level. Guest speaker Ingrid Perry
Peacock, President and CEO of the North York General Hospital
Foundation in Toronto spoke to board members about “The Art of
the Ask”.
The Suite Dreams Capital Renovation campaign is moving two
and a half times faster than anticipated!!! Maimonides is
committed to doing the construction right now, in the midst of its
fundraising. This is a challenge the highly-motivated campaign
team has embraced willingly.
“Our residents are here for an average of two years. It is critical
that we complete the Suite Dreams transformation as quickly as
possible in order to benefit the residents who are here now,” says
Michael Corber who co-chairs the campaign along with Alan
Schwartz.
The transformation of all the floors in this entirely donorfunded project will be completed in 2009.
HONOUR
SOMEONE YOU LOVE
Support the Maimonides Suite Dreams Capital Renovation
Campaign to renovate Maimonides’ most important
area – the living space of our residents.
It costs $7,200 to sponsor a room. There are 255
private and 66 semi-private rooms that need to be
sponsored. Consider sponsoring the room where your
family member lived or now calls home. It is such a
meaningful way to honor them. Recognition plaques
outside each room will gratefully acknowledge your
donation. For more detailed information on recognition
and a complete list of naming opportunities,

Strategic Plan
2007-2012
CREATING A NEW VISION AT
MAIMONIDES: “MORE THAN CARE”
At Maimonides Geriatric Centre, our
commitment is to provide the best
care and quality of life to residents
wherever they are in our system – in
our long-term care residence, in our
Helen and Sam Steinberg Day
Hospital, in accredited private homes,
or in intermediate residences for those
who don’t yet need the full range of
OUR RESIDENTS
The people who live at
Maimonides have six basic
qualities in common:
1. When they come to us, they come
for life – this is now their home.
2. They bring their own personalities,
life histories, and family relationships.
3. They come here because they
need professional support, and
they’ll need more as time goes on.
4. They also have a full range of
physical, social, cultural, emotional
and spiritual needs.
22
5. Their families are still part of their
lives and stay involved in caring for
them, although they are often in a
new kind of relationship.
6. Our staff has the responsibility of
dealing not just with “patients”, but
with whole human beings, and that
includes their family.
long-term care.
Over the next five years, we will build
on our strengths and move toward a
stronger vision to become the
resource of choice for the Jewish
elderly of Montreal and a model of
excellence for long-term care
everywhere. Focused on the “MORE
THAN CARE” theme, we will be a
leader in providing excellent long-term
care and a model for others to follow.
We will strengthen our role in the
community and the health care
network, and stay on top of emerging
trends. We are committed to finding
the people and the money required to
flourish and grow in this direction.
Everyone

more than care
MAIN FOCUS
These are the main areas we’ll be focusing on at Maimonides
from 2007-2012:
1. Care to residents that is respectful,
supportive, and personalized.
4. Teaching that supports staff,
families and the community.
2. Partnerships with families that
encourage and support their
involvement in care.
5. Public relations and communications
that strengthen our position with
clear, coordinated and consistent
messages.
3. Research that uncovers, promotes
and shares new knowledge about
long-term care.
6. Environments that are secure,
homelike, and welcoming for
residents and supportive of the
work of the staff.
7. Government
and
network
relationships that build on a spirit
of collaboration an leadership.
8. Resources and support services
that sustain our actions, and our
new vision of long-term care.
OUR
MISSION
The core mission of Maimonides
Geriatric Centre, a McGill-affiliated
long-term care facility, is to provide
service to aging members of the
community who are no longer able to
function independently. They are
entrusted to our care by their families,
with whom we are allied in values and
purpose. Our mandate is founded on a
strong heritage of Jewish values and
community support. We provide a
continuum of high-quality care through
our integrated network, which includes
the Helen and Sam Steinberg Day
Hospital, short-term respite care,
community-based homes and a variety
of long-term care accommodations. In
line with our mission, the Centre serves
as a training ground for professionals
and conducts research into issues
related to geriatric medicine and care of
the elderly.

strategic plan, please see our website:

a suite endeavour
We invite you to participate in the Foundation’s latest
endeavour – a cookbook. A dynamic group of foodies led by
co-chairs, Robert Kertesz and Denise Zunenshine have
embarked upon this exciting project to support the
Maimonides Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign.
This food adventure travelogue of “memorable food from
memorable moments” will blend recipes, heartwarming
stories and cultural histories.
“As co-chair of Women’s Division-United Israel Appeal
Canada, I am especially proud of our Community's work in
providing support to all those in need. Maimonides
certainly stands out as one of those institutions. Given my
love of cooking as evidenced by my vast collection of
cookbooks (all 4,400 of them), and my devotion to
charitable causes, it was only natural to accept to serve as
an advisor on the Maimonides Cookbook Committee, and
24
I look forward to working with them,” says Sue Carol
Isaacson.
We are currently collecting recipes with memorable
anecdotes for food that is sophisticated, modern and is
as easy and enjoyable to prepare as it is to eat. We invite
the community to send in your recipes All recipes must
be kosher style or kosher style adaptable and will be tested
before being selected for the book.
Fill out the recipe form on the next page or visit
www.maimonides.net. Cookbook sponsorships are now
available. For more information, please contact Ann Nagley,
(514) 483-2121, ext. 2260, or [email protected].
The cookbook is scheduled to be released in 2010, to
correspond with the 100th anniversary of Maimonides
Geriatric Centre.
NEW
PROJECTS
New elevators going up
Construction of two new elevators has begun on the exterior
of the building facing the garden. New atriums will replace the
balconies and lead to the elevators. Long waits at the current
elevators have been an ongoing concern for residents at
Maimonides who are dependent on them to get anywhere in
the building. The addition of the new elevators will greatly
enhance the quality of life for Maimonides residents. Artist
Haim Sherrf and his apprentice Chaim Teitelbaum donated
their time to paint beautiful murals on the gyproc walls
leading to the elevator construction which should be
complete next year.
