Kevin Donovan was born to John Joseph Donovan and Claire (McEvoy) Donovan in 1949. His Irish roots trace back to counties Cork and Kilkenny. He has
two brothers John “Jay” and Brian. He married his wife Alicia Carol (Bolton)
Donovan in 1980. He and Alicia have two sons Dennis & Brendan.
Kevin distinguished himself as a History teacher at Middlesex High School for
25 years before going on to become the Director of Recreation in Piscataway until he retired in 2010. While a teacher in Middlesex he received the
NJ Governor’s Teachers Recognition Award and while Director of Piscataway
Recreation, the department was recognized by Sports Illustrated as having
the #1 Recreation and Parks program in NJ in 2001.
He was president of the Middlesex Education Association from 1983 1988 and continued on as its VP until 1993. He has coached JV and Varsity
Baseball, Pop Warner Football for 13 years, and Little League and American
Legion Baseball for 9 years.
Kevin was inducted into the Piscataway High School Wall of Fame in 1998.
He has been a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for many years
and a member of the parade committee since 2004. He has served as an
usher at the annual AOH mass as well as the canopy bearer at the Shrine of
the Blessed Sacrament.
It is for his lifetime of service to young people in education and recreation and promotion of his Irish culture that the parade committee asks that you join them in congratulating Kevin Donovan as our
2012 Grand Marshal of the Somerville Saint Patrick’s Parade.

A Little Irish Humor
- courtesy of the committee An English man and an Irish man are driving head on , at
night, on a twisty, dark road. Both are driving too fast for
the conditions and collide on a sharp bend in the road. To
the amazement of both, they are unscathed, though their
cars are both destroyed. In celebration of their luck, both
agree to put aside their dislike for the other from that moment on. At this point, the Irish man goes to the boot and
fetches a 12 year old bottle of Jameson whiskey. He hands
the bottle to the English man, whom exclaims, “may the
English and the Irish live together forever, in peace, and
harmony.” The English man then tips the bottle and lashes
half of it down. Still flabbergasted over the whole thing,
he goes to hand the bottle to the Irish man, whom replies:
‘’ no tanks, I’ll just wait till the Police get here!’’

The Nally homestead
pictured here shares
some interesting
history...
At the end of WWII
Cologne Germany lay in
ruins and its people
starving. Children refugees
were being sent by the Red
Cross under “Operation
Shamrock” to Ireland to be
claimed by willing families to raise them as their own for a couple of
years while their city rebuilds. After hearing of the desperate situation,
the Nallys took in Herbert Remmel age 9. My father showed him the Irish
ways of planting potatoes, cutting turf in the bog and raising livestock
while attending school and playing with his new Irish friends. Herbert
had such a great story to tell of his boyhood experience that he wrote a
book entitled “From Cologne to Ballinlough” available in paperback.
Recently, I had an opportunity and pleasure to correspond with Herbert
who spoke so highly of my father and the open arms he received from
Ireland. ~ Brendan Nally - Parade Chairman ~

=====================================
Tumble Down Shack in Athlone
I am a long way from home and my thoughts ever roam
To Old Erin far over the sea,
For my heart it is there where the skies are so fair
And old Ireland is calling for me.
Oh, I want to go back to that tumble down shack
Where the wild roses bloom round the door
Just to pillow my head in that old trundle bed
Just to see my old mother once more,
There’s a bright gleaming light guiding me home tonight
Down the long road of white cobble stone,
Down the road that leads back to that tumble down shack
To the tumble down shack in Athlone.

A Message From
Our Chairman
Brendan
N a lly
As Parade Chairman I would like to thank our Sponsors, Advertisers, Patrons, Participants and spectators for making this 21st Annual Parade possible. It is through your collective generosity and interest that has made
this parade into one of the premier, if not finest, parades in Central New
Jersey. Being that we are not affiliated with any governmental funding
source, the parade is supported only through local private business and
personal donations. This is your parade and I am just glad to be able to
help assemble it for you. We as a committee strive to improve this great
Free Family Oriented Event each year and are open to all suggestions and
help, financial or otherwise. If you have an interest in being a member
of our committee, please call me at 908-313-5481; we would be glad to
have you on our team. You can also help in being a part of our community
Saint Patrick’s Parade by viewing our website at SomervilleSaintPatricksParade.com for any support events planned throughout the year.
A special thanks goes out to all of our committee members, past and
present, whose dedication and volunteer spirit made this all happen:

Our Parade Heritage
The First St. Patrick’s Day Parade through Somerville
was held in 1984. It went from Duke Island Park through to
downtown Somerville. The parade went on like this for several years until the organization could not continue. That
first parade had co-grand marshals: Tom Lavin, the founder of the local division of the AOH and Msgr. John Torney
the pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bernardsville.
In 1991 a new committee formed and held its first parade in 1992. It’s new route started and ended on Main Street
in Somerville – making it much more appealing to both
bands and spectators. The committee’s current chairman
Brendan Nally took over in 2008 and is focused on bringing new members onto the committee to keep it strong going forward. The committee tries each year to improve
the parade for our spectators, participants and sponsors.
In the last couple years, including the parade’s 20th anniversary of it’s current format, there has been an increase in
popularity, attendance and sponsorship due to its focus on remaining a family event with high quality and variety of participants. Due to our family focus we have been able to improve
and grow while other parades have not. We look forward to
another 20+ years of parade excellence here in Central Jersey.

to Whiskey in the Jar
I was going over the Cork and Kerry Mountains
I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin’
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said “Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya”
I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money yeah and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she loved me no never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar-o
Being drunk and weary I went to Molly’s chamber
Takin’ my Molly with me, but I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired my pistols, and I shot him with both barrels
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar-o
Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey...
Oh-oh, ya
Now some men like a fishin’, but some men like the fowlin’
Some men like to hear, to hear the cannonball a-roarin’
But me, I like sleepin’, `specially in my Molly’s chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya

A Little Irish Humor
- courtesy of the committee It seems three Irishmen, Sean, Michael and Tim, passed away
at the same time. Upon encountering the Pearly Gates, they
were met by ST. Patrick himself, and he addressed the boys
thusly: “Lads, I’m here to welcome you to heaven where you
will spend eternity. Just remember one thing, when you go
through these gates, don’t step on any of the ducks or you’ll be
punished for eternity.”
Sean went in first and was amazed to see that the entire landscape was encompassed by ducks, and try as he might, sure
enough he stepped on one. He was immediately joined by one
of the homeliest colleens he’s ever laid eyes on, and she said,
”Well love, you stepped on a duck and now we’re together for
all time.”And of course the exact same thing happened to Michael only his companion was even the worse for wear.
By this time Tim was absolutely terrified. And he gingerly
managed to make it most of the way across the court without
stepping on a single duck. Suddenly, his arm was taken by a
young lass. Tim looked over and beheld the most beautiful,
graceful, blue-eyed woman he’s ever seen in all his life. He
gasped, “I don’t understand it!” The young beauty answered,
“Well I’m sure I don’t either, I was walking along minding my
own business, when all of a sudden I stepped on a duck.”

THE HISTORY OF St. PATRICK
St. Patrick as we know him today was born Maewyn Succat in Scotland or
Wales around 370 AD to parents Calpurnious and Conchessa, who were Romans
living in Britania. While he was a teenager; he was kidnapped into slavery and
worked as a Shepard in Ireland. It was at this time he started having dreams and
visions which moved him to actions.
One such dream led him to escape his captors to the coast and sail back to
Britain. A dream later, recounted in his autobiography Confessio, he told of a man
coming to him pleading for his return to Ireland. He felt that if he was going to return
he needed to prepare himself and entered the Monastery in France and began
studying for the Priesthood. It was then that he changed his name to Patrick –
meaning ‘Father of the People’ in Latin.
Once he felt his faith was strong, he returned to Ireland around 432 AD as a
Bishop. He traveled throughout the countryside spreading the word of Jesus and
built churches and schools throughout the country. His engaging personality and
previous knowledge of the social structure, it is said, lent to the success of his
mission. He eventually made The Church of Ireland’s headquarters in Armagh (in
present day North Ireland).
By the time of Patrick’s death on March 27th between 461 A.D. and 490 A.D.
Ireland was almost entirely Christian and he was later named its Patron Saint. St.
Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in the Americas since the first parade was held in
1762 in Boston. The day became a way for Irish immigrants and their decendents to
reconnect with their roots.
