Harry Potter 7: Part 2 crosses
$1 billion worldwide
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
INCE it opened 20 days ago, Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
Part 2 has been breaking box office
records, but remember—the series
finale had a 3-D boost. Anthony D
Alessandro does the global numbers:
In just 17 days, Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows: Part 2 flew past the $1-billion mark at the global box office, making it
the highest grossing chapter in the franchise
as well as the ninth film ever to cross this
benchmark (top nine grossers list is below).
Prior to Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone sat as the
franchise’s highest-grossing installment for a
decade, with $974.8 million.
This raises the total for the entire Harry
Potter franchise to $7.385 billion. Potter has
been the highest-grossing film series since
2009, when Half-Blood Prince assisted in
unseating James Bond’s $5.1 billion global
tally for the title. After Bond, the two Star
Wars trilogies and its feature toon The Clone
Wars rank third with a cumulative $4.4 billion.
Even more impressively, Deathly
Hallows: Part 2 is the second film this year
after Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On
Stranger Tides to cross the $1 billion milestone—soon
to
be
followed
by
Transformers: Dark of the Moon which is
currently at $982.9 million. Transformers 3
will round out the $1-billion grosser list as a
S
perfect 10. All three coasted on 3-D premium
ticket prices, however.
All of these benchmarks bode well for the
longevity the 3-D format, which is a continual
box office driver abroad, versus its touch-andgo status in the US. Since Avatar, 3-D films
have populated the top billion-makers list; five
3-D titles already occupy a spot in the top
nine. As exhibition turns to digital 3-D overseas in such prime territories as China and
Russia, the format’s share of foreign receipts
on a particular title easily hits 60% on average.
During its opening weekend, 43% of Deathly
Hallows: Part 2’s domestic opening was
repped by 3-D, while internationally that
share was significantly higher at 60%.
Through its second frame, 3-D accounted for
56% of Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s foreign
cume.
Despite these impressive ratios, where
international reps 70% of a film’s worldwide
ticket sales, the irony remains that major studios tend to green light projects based on their
potential success in the US versus abroad.
Although international saves the asses of
many projects, some studios continue to
spend more on US audience test marketing
than foreign. That because stateside success
usually translates abroad. A bomb in North
American actually playing abroad is the
exception. Annually, this theory is often disproven, as foreign box office swells and such
anomalies as The Golden Compass ($70.1 million stateside, $302.1 million foreign) and The
Tourist ($67.6 million, $210.7 million foreign)
prove they are worthwhile.

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
ARACK Obama was born in Honolulu,
Hawaii on August 4, 1961 to a Kenyan
father and an American mother. Obama’s
parents, Barack Obama Sr and Ann
Dunham met while studying at the
University of Hawaii.
B
Moving to Indonesia in 1967
Obama spent his early years in Honolulu before
moving to Indonesia at the age of six. Obama’s parents separated when he was two years old. His
mother later married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian.
The family moved to Jakarta in 1967.
After staying for four years in Indonesia, Obama
returned to Honolulu to study at the Punahou
school. He studied at the Occidental College in Los
Angeles for two years before moving to the
Columbia University in New York City. Obama
graduated from the Columbia University in 1983
with a major in Political Science and a specialisation
in International Relations.
Work life
After his graduation, Obama worked at the
Business International Corporation and the New
York Public Interest Research Group. In 1985, he
moved to Chicago to work as a community organiser. Later, in 1988, Obama joined the Harvard Law
School. He went on to become the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated
from the law school in 1991.
Barack Obama met Michelle Robinson in 1989,
whom he married in 1992. Michelle and Barack
have two daughters.
Obama played several roles professionally
between 1993 and 2004. He worked as a lawyer for
the law firm, David, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He
also worked as a part-time lecturer at the University
of Chicago Law School from 1993 to 2004; he
taught constitutional law at the law school. Obama
also served as a board member at the Woods Fund
of Chicago, a philanthropic organisation.
Elected to senate
In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois senate.
He was elected again in 1998 and 2002. In 2000, he
lost a primary for the United States House of
Representatives.
In 2003, Obama was appointed the chairman of
the Illinois Senate’s Health and Human Services
Committee. Obama became a United States Senator
in late 2004 to become the fifth Afro-American
Senator in history. He secured 70% votes.
In 1991, while being in-charge of a voter registration drive in Chicago, Obama began writing a book
of memoirs that was later published in 1995 as
Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and
Inheritance. Obama wrote another book later that
was published in 2006. The book, The Audacity of
Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American
Dream went on to become a part of the New York
Times Best Seller list.
Working on reforms and policies
Once elected into the state Senate of Illinois,
Obama took deep interest in reforms and policies,
making and changing some consequently. He initiated the requirement of mandatorily videotaping
interrogations in cases of homicide. He enthusiastically participated in creating the Earned Income
Tax Credit program for state, meant for helping
people in the low-income groups. He went on to initiate reforms in the fields of healthcare and childcare. An interesting law that came into being
because of him was the law to monitor racial profiling. It became mandatory to note the race of the
drivers that are detained by the state police.
Following his election into the United States
Senate, Obama showed extreme interest in immigration reforms and border security improvements.
He became a co-sponsor of the Secure America and
Orderly Immigration Act; the act was introduced by
John McCain, his Republican rival who ran for the
United States Presidential post. A year later, Obama
also favoured another security bill that later became
the Secure Fence Act.
Obama, in association with Tom Coburn, brought
the Coburn-Obama Transparency Act into being;
the act made the government expenditure transparent via a website called the USAspending.gov. Also,
in association with the Republican, Richard Lugar,
a Lugar-Obama program went on to make additions
to the existing Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat
reduction concept.
In 2007, Obama, in association with Senator Russ
Feingold, brought into being the Honest Leadership
and Open Government Act. He later introduced the
Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007.
Running for presidency
In February 2007, he declared that he will be running for the post of the President of the United
States. He has showed his dislike to negative campaigning.
Obama has been advocating an end to the war in
Iraq, a universal health care mechanism and
increased energy independence as his most important agendas in his manifesto.
Obama has surprised his critics by raising enormous amount of money through his campaigns. In
January this year, his campaign raised 36.8 million
US dollars, the highest amount raised ever in the
Democratic primaries. In the first six months of his
campaign last year, 58 million US dollars were
raised, breaking earlier records.
Following a series of hate mail sent to Obama, the
US Secret Service instated special protection for
Obama. “Fired up! Ready to go!” is a cry doing the
rounds at Obama’s campaigns.
President of the USA
Barack Obama has been voted as 44th president
of the USA. He won the election battle against John
McCain. He is the first Afro-American president.
Obama has been dubbed as the most liberal
Senator in his political life. In his personal life,
he plays basketball and claims to be a good
poker player.

Make that long flight engaging
Travel
guide
ABOUT to board a long flight to your holiday destination? Long-duration flights, that span five to ten hours or even more, can wreck havoc on your
skin, hair and even mental state of being. So, try some of these tricks to reach your destination rested and content.
Food wise: What you eat while travelling can affect your overall well-being. Avoid eating a heavy meal before boarding. Foods like bread, meat in
white sauces, burgers are bad choices. They are rich in carbs and can even cause bloating. Salty foods can cause water retention, while high
sugar foods can make you hyperactive. Eat a light meal that is rich in proteins before boarding. When you’re served on board, opt for something
light and easy. Also avoid alcoholic and caffeine-based drinks as they can cause dehydration.
Moisture fresh: Airplanes wreak havoc with our skin. If you have dry skin, it might become drier and those with oily skin could experience breakouts. Hence, it’s best to wear minimal or no make-up when on board. Also keep handy a face moisturiser and a lip balm.
Stay active: Long flights can take a toll on your body. It’s not easy to sit in the same position for the entire time. Hence, try moving your feet about.
Curl and uncurl your toes and try to get up from your seat every few hours. If you want to sleep, choose a comfortable position and avoid bending your
neck as it may cause pain later on. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated throughout and keep some mints handy incase you feel nauseous at point.

Nadia Khan ready for a comeback!
Nida Azwer celebrates little souls
AFTER a long gap of 11 months, Nadia Khan is
all set to rock the trend of morning shows.
According to reports, Nadia Khan will be seen
again doing a news channel morning show, live
from Pakistan. However, the name of the channel
is not revealed yet. Nadia Khan was previously
hosting morning show at Geo TV, when she suddenly disappeared from the TV scene without
some known and valid reason. However, she is
ready to rock the TV world again.
AT Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) Sunsilk Fashion
Week, Nida Azwer celebrated life by bringing children from Save
Our Souls (SOS) village on the ramp. Dolled up in rich colours of
tradition, little models came playing on the ramp in miniature
Mughal pieces that enthralled the onlookers and probably other
designers as well. With a price tag ranging from Rs 2000 to Rs
12000 and catering to ages from three months to 12 years,
Azwer’s kids’ collection is essentially formal wear, which incorporates Kurtas, Anghrakhas and Ghagras with fine embroidery and
colour palette ranging from ivory to gold to pastels.

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
USY with frequent world
tours, Strings finally took out
time to visit the recording studio in Karachi, Pakistan. Talking
about their future plans, band members Bilal Maqsood and Faisal
Kapadia said that among other projects they are working on a song on
the fragile Pakistan-India relationship.
You finally sat down in the studios for recording. What can
you disclose at this point?
Maqsood: Now that making an
album is out of question given the
current law and order situation, we
have decided that every month or
two, we’ll record some new songs
and put them online. By the end of
one year, we want to have eight to 10
new songs. While some of these
songs may end up as music videos,
the rest will be just audio files to be
downloaded. At the moment, we are
B
laying down tracks for the first two
songs – Tum Hi To Ho and Goli
Maray.
Kapadia: The whole idea behind
going into a recording studio and
making a bunch of new songs is just
to have fun. We strongly believe that
coming out with new music helps us
grow and reinvent ourselves as
musicians.
What is Strings’ new sound
like?
Maqsood: The addition of Ahad
Nayani, our new drummer, has really changed our live sound. We have
found a new level of energy in our
concerts. We want to transfer that in
these songs. Goli Maray is a fun
song. Its genre can’t be defined. The
closest we can say is that it’s retrocum-rock-cum-big band. Anwar
Sahib (lyricist) has dared to go in a
totally different space this time. His
expression and choice of words in
Goli Maray is very filmy. Initially,
he was reluctant when given the
brief since he had never ventured
into this direction. But once he started off, words just kept flowing in. It
was sheer pleasure working on this
number. Tum Hi To ho is a soft rock
type of a song which is very Stringish.
Mein Tou Dekhoonga and
Khud Hi Kuch Kerna Parega
sounded different altogether.
Can we expect a revamped
Strings sound this time
around?
Maqsood: Yes, Tum Hi To ho
will be a collaboration with a female
performer and Goli Maray is nothing like you have ever heard from
Strings.
Any more socially relevant
numbers in the pipeline?
Maqsood: Yes, we are in the
process of making a song on the
fragile Pakistan-India relationship. It’s a BBC and MTV India
project.
(From left) Bilal Maqsood, John Abraham and Faisal Kapadia in the music
video of Strings’ song Koi Aane Wala Hai.
What are your future plans?
Kapadia: We got a call from
MTV India. They are calling us for
MTV India Unplugged sessions. We
are preparing for that.
Finally, a few words about
the response to Mein Tou
Dekhoonga?
Kapadia: The irony of the matter
is that our political parties want to
own this song. We’ve had offers
from two different political parties.
Our reply is always the same: “If you
believe in it, you have every right to
play it, but you can’t own it. This
song belongs to every Pakistani.”
Yesterday, we got a call from one
such party. They wanted us to sing
it in one of their upcoming conventions. We laid down three simple
conditions;
1. No party flags on the venue,
only our national flag will be
allowed.
2. No armed guards.
3. We would like to see a clear policy for the promotion of music and
arts in their new manifesto.
Maqsood: We will agree to sing
only if they comply with the above
conditions.
Our only aim is the betterment of
Pakistan, and if by going to the convention and singing this song we
are doing some good to the country, then why not? Otherwise, there
is no point.
A conversation with Lollywood’s
Golden Girl Reema Khan
in Ghum.
A poster of movie Love Me
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
EFERRED to by many as
Pakistan’s Aishwarya Rai and
Lollywood’s Golden Girl, Reema
Khan shares her experiences in the
industry and her upcoming plans. A
talented actor who has featured in over
200 films, Reema debuted as a director
R
and producer with the award winning
movie Koi Tujh Sa Kahan in 2005.
Now, after a gap of six years, she is
back in the business with Love Mein
Ghum, an upcoming Lollywood film,
which will be directed and produced by
Reema herself, who won best actor and
director at the 2006 Lux Style Awards.
Talking about Love Mein Ghum,
which has a potpourri of stars in the
title track, Reema said, “Getting so
many big stars together was a difficult
task, but I really wanted it and when I
am up for something, I just don’t let it
go out of my hands.”
Reminiscing about the past when she
first stepped into the world of films as a
13-year-old, with her debut movie
Bulandi, Reema says she had to face a
lot of harsh criticism before she could
finally stamp her authority in the
industry. “I had to put up with
immense criticism from all sides, but
two things helped me and made me
what I am today. Firstly, my looks —
my skin and hair — and secondly, my
confidence went a long way.”
Recalling her struggles in the initial
days, Reema feels she has not only
evolved as an actor but has also learnt
how to live through hardships. “I was a
nobody without any connections or
contacts in the industry. To be honest,
I didn’t know what to say, how to
speak, or how to even dance. The
Lollywood stars of those days would
often shun me, saying ‘Look, she is a
small girl and will not be seen for long.’
But I stood where I was and worked my
way up.”
However, the optimistic star also had
bouts of uncertainty, as a result of
which she decided to be selective with
her films. “What Lollywood was offering was routine scripts and pathetic
songs. I don’t compromise on work, on
decency or on grace! Hence, I
decided to do my own film, Koi
Tujh Sa Kahan.”
With that attitude and work
ethic, Reema has reached great
heights of success. Not only is
she a known film actor,
director-producer, anchor,
stage performer, she is also
a columnist for Urdu newspaper, Khabrain. “I’ve been
writing for the paper for the
past six years and I discuss different issues.”

Zac Efron is dating Rumer Willis?
ZAC Efron might have recently been spotted frolicking on the beach with former High School Musical
co-star Ashley Tisdale, but according to InTouch
Weekly (via Celebitchy.com) the young leading man
only has eyes for Rumer Willis. The magazine
reports that Zac has even had a meeting with
Rumer’s mom, Demi Moore, where the 23-year-old
brought her flowers. Photos of the pair have yet to
surface and a rep for Zac was not immediately
available for comment when contacted by Access
Hollywood.
JENNIFER Aniston is getting ready for a new home with boyfriend
Justin Theroux, but not before celebrating one last time in her Beverly
Hills home. According to People, the 42-year-old actress threw one
last party at her palatial home for her close loved ones over the weekend. “Jen had a party at her Beverly Hills house on Friday night - a little going away party since she plans on spending so much more time
in New York,” a source told the magazine. Adding, “She just wanted
to have one more great get together with friends at the house before
she moved out.” Justin, who turns 40 next week, was in attendance
at the weekend bash.

“Nicole and Jess seemed to get along
really well,” an eyewitness tells Us
Weekly of the Winter Kate and Jessica
Simpson Collection fashion moguls.
Clad in a black sparkly mini dress,
Simpson clapped enthusiastically as her
fellow reality show mentor was introduced to the crowd. Though the onlooker tells Us Simpson appeared fidgety at
first, she was able to loosen up quite
quickly. “She danced in her seat to the
house music, almost as if releasing
nervous energy,” says the witness.
NBC executives couldn’t be more
thrilled to have Simpson, Richie, fellow mentor John Varvatos and
host Elle MacPherson on

Preity Zinta has a weight problem
Sonam Kapoor takes to Bikram yoga
PREITY Zinta has a new mission on hand — to lose weight for her
upcoming film Ishq in Paris. The actress is currently in Los Angeles
and has been hiking most of the time, since adventure sports are not
only good for maintaining weight but they also serve as a stress
buster, but that did not go too well with her. She injured herself when
she met with an accident while hiking. On Saturday, she tweeted, “
Good morning tweeple! Too much flying for me these days and of
course.... The knee is still recovering. What is up with you guys ? Hurt
my knee hiking up a 4 mile steep hike in LA.” The 36- year- old
actress has not only lost oodles of weight but has had a complete
makeover. She has also learned French for the new movie.
IT seems Sonam Kapoor is aiming for size zero. The
already slim actress has now joined Bikram Yoga classes,
where she is expected to sweat it out and burn oodles of
calories. “Starting bikram yoga today or as everyone calls
it hot yoga. It’s my dad’s secret for looking fab. (sic),”
Sonam posted on Twitter. Bikram Yoga is a distinct style
developed by yoga guru Bikram Choudhury who holds a
US copyright on his yoga that comprises of 26 ‘asanas’
or postures and two breathing exercises. In the West,
celebrities like Madonna, Brooke Shields and Raquel
Welch practice it.

In a gesture of appreciation the kids danced to a medley of Hrithik’s numbers and he in turned joined them in
