the ocean
T
he Caribbean islands float in the azure sea, swathed in
balmy trade winds that wash over palm-fringed beaches.
Here, romance is a natural resource, and the Essential Hotel
Collection’s privately owned boutique properties are every bit as
gorgeous as their surroundings. Each of these small hotels is
unique, but they all offer warm service and creative cuisine with a
Caribbean twist. And, thanks to British Airways’ direct flights to the
West Indies, they’re easy to get to for a romantic getaway, family
chill time or a relaxing break for discerning foodies.
The mountainous island of Nevis is home to Montpelier
Plantation & Beach, a 19-room hilltop retreat with a private beach.
There are three restaurants here including Indigo with its tapas
platters and molecular cocktails, Restaurant 750, and a 300 yearold converted sugar mill with a serious rum and wine collection.
At the modern, colonial-style Bequia Beach Hotel in the
Grenadines, you can sip cocktails in the rum shack on the beach or
its Beverley Hills-style pool cabanas, the only ones of their kind in the
Caribbean. Close by is Young Island, off the coast of St Vincent.
Built on its own private isle, it offers Robinson Crusoe seclusion – if
Crusoe had a plunge pool, spa and a choice of six homemade
breads at dinner. Board its catamaran to catch and cook your own
fish if you crave castaway-style independence.
At the refined Relais & Châteaux property Cobblers Cove in
Barbados, leave the cooking to the experts. Local chef Michael
Harrison trained under Michel Roux Jr, and his tasting menus
showcase local cuisine. For a less formal taste of Barbados, head
north to Little Good Harbour. This small, unpretentious beachfront hotel, set within an historical fort near a fishing village, has
a mighty reputation for chef Stephen Belgrave’s simple, authentic
cooking. Across the island, on its wild east coast, is The Atlantis
Hotel. Here you can open the shutters, climb back into bed and
watch the sun rise over the rolling surf. Don’t lie in too long, though.
The sun comes up every day, but the hotel only serves its famed
West Indian lunch buffet twice a week.
