Title: PIKE Power Player: A presentation by the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient,
Joe Plumeri (William & Mary, Gamma '64), on Achieving Personal & Professional Success through
Passion.
The following themes and examples are merely suggestions for incorporation into Mr. Plumeri’s
remarks as requested and based off an understanding of some of the key concepts as illustrated in
The Power of Being Yourself.
Theme 1: Play in Traffic – Take Chances & Risks (the right kind), Show Up

Message 1: The Fraternity (like Rotary, Kiwanis) is by its very nature a vehicle to meet people
from different backgrounds within your chapter, from other chapters around the country, and
from other organizations on campus. Just being a member isn’t enough; you must make the
most of the opportunity you have and take it.
Pi Kappa Alpha Confidential – For Internal Use Only
1



Message 2: Seek out an elected or appointed chapter office position, any position and make the
most of it. Volunteer – for anything! Community Relations, Alumni Relations – so your job is to
call upon community organizations or alumni leaders and tell our story or see how we can help
them – sign me up! It’s a great opportunity for your organization and for yourself personally.
Membership Education – I get to meet subject matter experts personally and have them share
information with the chapter, or learn the information and deliver myself – sign me up.
Message 3: Attend PIKE University events. Sure there is a cost – a cost for not attending. So
you’re telling me as an 18-22 year old, I have the chance to travel somewhere, learn how to run
my business better, hear incredible presentations (like mine), and meet hundreds of fellow
brothers and alumni who may be able to help me realize my passion – I need to be there, my
entire chapter needs to be there.
Message 4: The social media topic is big among this demographic. It is great, but business;
including fraternity business, especially recruitment, is and will always be done face to face.
Theme 2: Look Up, Not Down



Message 1: The importance of staying positive in challenging circumstances. Maybe you’re not
the best fraternity on your campus. Don’t let another group’s membership, resources, or house
dictate your reality. Inspire others with your vision. Pi Kappa Alpha is not an “alternative”; it
should never be second or third best. Purposeful thinking can shift the landscape.
Message 2: “In the absence of a common vision, in the absence of leadership, everybody will
supply their own vision and their own leadership, and the result will be a divided, scattered”
fraternity. How are you, as leaders, communicating your vision? A text message or email isn’t
enough. You need to meet with every member of your chapter, alumni, university officials –
share your goals and vision, publicize them, and inspire those around you.
Message 3: Willingness to Please is paramount. It is fine to want to be the best on campus, win
awards locally and nationally – that type of greed is understood. Those accomplishments also
help to feed your ego, individually and collectively. If you set out as a leader, with a willingness
to please those in your chapter and in your community, you will succeed and be the best.
Theme 3: Everyone Has the Same Plumbing / Assuming CEO Position with Willis


Message 1: Overcoming traditions. Willis had traditions, some good, some bad. Pi Kappa
Alpha has traditions. The ones involving values: friendship, love, truth, honor, loyalty, hard
work, supporting others, pursuing excellence – those should be nurtured and advanced. Local
traditions, with no bearing in the history or ritual of the Fraternity – ones which don’t inspire
vision and passion, some which tear people apart, should be eliminated no matter how difficult.
What made the Fraternity successful in 1868 versus 1968 versus 2016? Some of those same
characteristics have stood the test of time: our values. Others do not and should be replaced “We
don’t want to live by tradition; we want to build on it.”
Message 2: Pi Kappa Alpha is a team sport, the ultimate people business – if your chapter has
a great culture, build upon it. If your culture needs to be changed, start by bringing pride into
the organization. Do people (university, parents, alumni) have the wrong perception of your
organization? Pick up the phone, go out and meet them and tell them what you are really about
– no one else is going to do it for you.
Pi Kappa Alpha Confidential – For Internal Use Only
2

Message 3: Pi Kappa Alpha International President John Bobango has stressed the importance
of knowing your chapter operations from the ground up, understanding every aspect of its
operations. As a leader, not only must you inspire people, but you must also “know the business
inside and out. God is in the details. Hard work leads to good results.”
Specific Chapter Examples (for potential incorporation into Joe Plumeri remarks)
Smythe Chapter – refers to a chapter performing in top 10% in ΠΚΑ
Excellence Chapter – refers to a chapter performing in top 25% in ΠΚΑ
Perennial Smythe Chapter: One of our best – consider recognizing and congratulating; challenge to
keep setting higher goals
Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), Alpha Kappa Chapter
 11 consecutive Smythe Awards (24 total)
 Recruit both largest and best men each year; has created a culture where the best men seek
out ΠΚΑ
 Send over 50 men annually to leadership programming (PIKE U) to reinforce culture of
excellence and training the next era of leadership
 Successfully engages all of its members to drive toward their ultimate goal of being an
outstanding chapter year in/year out
 Engages and utilizes alumni support system
 Steward of their community: campus, city, etc.
 Raised $20,000 for charity; 1st in intramurals; 1st in academics
 Chapter President: Schott Schroer
 Rush Chairman: William Wyne
Previous Smythe/Excellence but has Trailed Off
University of Arizona, Gamma Delta Chapter
 Fourth consecutive Smythe in 2014, but has trailed off since
 Has adopted a wait for who shows up vs. recruit the best men approach, relying on social
credibility instead of hard work; taking a complacent approach to various operations
 Are they seeking out the alumni assistance and resources at their disposal?
 Is your chapter still focused on attaining high achievement on a collective and individual
basis, seeking out opportunities to excel and individual leadership positions on campus?
 How are you defining success? Being a role model on campus for all student organizations or
are we strictly focused on being the best socially?
 Chapter President: Clark Abourisk
 Treasurer: Austin Mette
 Others in attendance: Alex Skiljan
 What is your chapter mission at Arizona? How do you plan to achieve it during the
upcoming academic year?
Pi Kappa Alpha Confidential – For Internal Use Only
3
Previous Smythe/Excellence but has trailed off
University of Florida, Alpha Eta Chapter
 Smythe Award in 2014,
 If you were to ask them if they are the best on their campus, they would say “yes”
o Ask them why?
o Would the university agree with that? Sororities? The Community?
o Has every member of their chapter “bought in” to their vision of success?
o Is the leadership setting the right example at all times?
 We want a great chapter at University of Florida, but all of their members must “buy in” to
the vision
 Chapter President: Brant Wickersham
Chapter to Challenge/Encourage
Washington State University, Gamma Xi Chapter
 Chapter was a Smythe winning chapter in 2011, but has had numerous challenges since
 At present, this is a chapter that is just doing the minimum
 Has begun to implement a Chapter Action Plan to improve chapter operations and
performance; already seeing the benefits.
o Ask if everyone in their chapter is aware and buys-in to the chapter’s new vision?
 Reinvigorated alumni base very much involved in the chapter’s progress and wants them to
succeed. Are undergraduates leveraging this resource accordingly?
 The path ahead for this group will be a difficult one. Success does not happen easily or
overnight.
 Address how to stay motivated; celebrate small wins
 Chapter President: Adam Pitt

THE PI KAPPA ALPHA FRATERNITY
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
NEW ORLEANS • 2016
WELCOME TO THE 2016 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
FROM THE
INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
Brothers,
Alpha.
On behalf of the Supreme
Council and all of our volunteer international officers, I
welcome you to New Orleans
for the 2016 International
Convention of Pi Kappa
Our Fraternity continues to expand while also
maintaining PIKE excellence in terms of chapter
quality, attendance at leadership programs, and
membership. While this is a time to celebrate
those achievements, it is also a time to realize
our work is far from complete.
Convention is the official meeting of our Fraternity but for anyone that attends, it is far more
than just the election of officers and the business
of the Fraternity. Convention is an experience!
I encourage you to make the most of this incredible opportunity.
Participate in the legislative sessions, speak up
in the committee meetings, but most of all socialize with and engage your fellow Pikes from
all over North America. Any conversation with
some of the more senior members of our Fraternity will no doubt contain phrases like, “I
remember Boston in 1986” or “Memphis in
2008 was amazing!” I am confident that because
of your participation here, all of us will one day
be telling fond stories of New Orleans 2016!
I sincerely hope that you will leave this event
having made new and lasting friendships. I also
hope you will leave motivated and invigorated,
having gained insight to the best practices and
initiatives which will benefit your own Chapter
or alumni association.
It is my honor to be your International President.
I look forward to a successful and memorable
Convention as we celebrate 148 years of Pi
Kappa Alpha.
FROM THE
FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
FROM THE
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
Greetings, Brothers!
Brothers!
On behalf of the Pi Kappa
Alpha Foundation, welcome
to the 2016 Pi Kappa Alpha
Convention! It’s going to be
a great learning experience
and a lot of fun. Your attendance at the Convention shows your commitment to ensuring that Pi Kappa Alpha remains
the college fraternity experience by which all
others are judged. On behalf of the Foundation’s
Board of Trustees and staff, thank you for making
the commitment to attend and continue Pi Kappa
Alpha’s legacy of excellence.
The Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation raises funds to
educate and empower principled leaders. As a
part of fulfilling that objective, the Foundation
is proud to support the educational and leadership programs of Pike University and the Fraternity, including those at this Convention, through
grants and scholarships. We thank the Foundation’s generous supporters for enabling us to
support those programs that help keep our
Fraternity the world’s premier college fraternity.
The Foundation looks forward to celebrating the
accomplishments of the Fraternity, Pike University, and the Foundation during the Convention.
Take full advantage of the educational and leadership offerings while at the Convention and
you will find the flame of Pi Kappa Alpha burning
brighter than ever in your heart.
Welcome to New Orleans!
On behalf of the Fraternity’s
professional staff, welcome
to the 2016 Pi Kappa Alpha
International Convention. The Convention is not only the biennial
business meeting of Pi Kappa Alpha, but the
premier event of our Fraternity. Countless brothers over the years have expressed that it provides some of the fondest memories of their
Fraternity experiences.
We hope you enjoy this opportunity to interact
and network with student and alumni members,
international officers, and volunteers from
across North America. We encourage you to
fully engage in the activities of the Convention
– educational sessions, legislative considerations, inspirational speeches and recognition,
and the election of the new Supreme Council.
The Convention is also a time to celebrate the
Fraternity’s many successes. Without a doubt,
the recognition of Chapters, undergraduates,
and alumni achievements will be one of the
many highlights of the Convention.
The Fraternity staff stands ready to advise and
assist you throughout the next few days. Again,
welcome and have fun, and let’s plan together

COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT
Attendees who registered for this event will
participate in a community service project on
Friday, August 5 in cooperation with Ronald
McDonald House-NOLA.
“Helping Families Find Strength in Numbers” is
more than a slogan. It’s something that happens
every day at Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater New Orleans. Our 15-room
house serves as home-away-from-home for an
average of 85 families each month; many are
from Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, and some
from countries like Pakistan, on the other side
of the globe. While here, they find strength not
only by being together as families, but being
together with families who are feeling the same
stress, fear, hope and hopefully, joy, as their
children heal from serious illnesses.
The mission of the Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Greater New Orleans is to provide
a “home-away-from-home” to families of seriously ill children and to provide programs that
give comfort, compassion and care to children
and their families.
The New Orleans Ronald McDonald House
opened in December 1983. It is a beautiful,
homey, 15-bedroom home with a huge kitchen and dining room, two
laundry areas, a toy room, two dens and an outside patio area – plenty
of space for guests to make themselves at home and visit with each other.
Pi Kappa Alpha is pleased to partner with Ronald McDonald HouseNOLA, supporting the mission to provide a home-away-from-home for
families of seriously ill children.
Keeping families close

THE ROBERT ADGER SMYTHE AWARD
SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS
The Smythe Award recognizes overall chapter superiority and prominence.
The chapters that win this award are top on their campus and the “best

THE ORDER OF WEST RANGE
MICHAEL L. AINSLIE
(Vanderbilt, Sigma ’62)
Brother Ainslie has enjoyed a long career in business
and not for profit leadership. In 1984, he became President and CEO of Sotheby’s, the worldwide auction and
real estate company. Over the next decade, he led a
team that changed the global auction business from a
stuffy, dealer focused one to the lively, private collector auction world of
today. In addition to strengthening Sotheby’s 85 global offices and sales
rooms, he led expansions in Russia, Japan, Korea and Israel. Ainslie served
as the first Chair of the Posse Foundation board, partnering with the
founder Debbie Bial to make Posse the country’s leading college access
program for inner city public high school graduates. Today, each fall a
Posse cohort of ten scholars enter 56 elite universities across the country.
Over 800 new Posse scholars are selected each year to receive full tuition
leadership merit scholarships. 6,300 have graduated or are attending
college today. Ninety percent of Posse scholars graduate. Over 45 percent
are attending or have completed graduate school.
Ainslie, a Tennessee native, graduated from Vanderbilt University and
after traveling abroad on a Corning Foundation World Travel Fellowship,
attended Harvard Business School, receiving his MBA in Finance in 1968.
Prior to Sotheby’s, Ainslie served as President and CEO of the National
Trust for Historic Preservation, leading a strategic shift to focus on private
investment in historic buildings. He helped write into the 1981 Reagan
tax bill the 25 percent investment tax credit for historic renovation. This
incentive led to a boom in historic building investment of over $8 billion
in the following decade.
Ainslie has served on many boards, including Vanderbilt University, the
United States Tennis Association, the St. Joe Company, the International
Tennis Hall of Fame, and Lehman Brothers. Ainslie has four grown children,
a daughter who will enter Vanderbilt this fall, and lives with his wife,
Suzanne, in Palm Beach, Florida.

International Convention
Overview & Agenda
_______________________________________________
Convention Overview
The most important component of the Fraternity is the international convention, which usually
occurs during the summer of every even-numbered year. Delegates to the convention discuss the
Fraternity’s direction and elect officers to promote the Fraternity’s interests between
conventions. Each chapter and alumni association has the right to send members to each
convention, and each group in good standing is allowed one voting delegate. The delegates of the
convention have the sole legislative function of the Fraternity. Convention action is required to
revoke charters or modify the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Ritual. The Convention delegation
elects members to the Supreme Council and makes final determination on appeals of Supreme
Council decisions. Convention delegates adopt resolutions and publish rules and laws in the
form of the Constitution & Chapter Codes. These documents provide for, and limit, the
functions and relationship of individual members, chapters, alumni associations, and the
Supreme Council in regard to the Fraternity.
In addition to the business elements of the Fraternity, the Convention also includes presentation
of the Fraternity’s Distinguished Achievement, Loyalty, and Chapter Advisor of the Year Awards.
Numerous chapter programming awards, the Raymond L. Orians Excellence Awards, and the
coveted Robert Adger Smythe Awards are also presented. All attendees also have the
opportunity to enjoy an educational curriculum covering a variety of relevant topics as well as
other special events.

Distinguished Achievement Award
INTRODUCTION
Pi Kappa Alpha is proud to recognize Mr. Joseph J. Plumeri, Gamma ’64, with the Distinguished
Achievement Award, the Fraternity’s most prestigious alumnus honor.
The Distinguished Achievement Award (DAA) was established
in 1936 to annually recognize one alumnus who has reached
optimum level of achievement in his vocation, profession or
field of public service with a verified record of accomplishment
that meets the ideals of the Fraternity. The first recipient of
this Award was A.B. “Happy” Chandler, a former Kentucky
governor, U.S. Senator, and the second commissioner of major
league baseball. Other past honorees include President &
CEO of Scripts Networks Ken Lowe; Former Bank of America
Chairman Charles Holiday; noted author/speaker Stephen
Covey; and COO of Microsoft Kevin Turner.
On August 4, 2016, the Fraternity will induct Brother Plumeri
into the ranks of the DAA, further magnifying the cadre of
successful men who have achieved such status.
The entire Pi Kappa Alpha Convention will be on hand to
participate in the award ceremony and formal dinner banquet
which will commence at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth of August.
Governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler surveys flood
damage during the Depression. He was the
first recipient of Pi Kappa Alpha’s Distinguished
Achievement Award.
Additionally, the Fraternity invites Brother Plumeri to serve
as the Convention’s Leadership Lecturer – an opportunity to address over 500 student members
who will be in attendance at the event. The Leadership Lecture is tentatively scheduled to take place
immediately prior to the DAA induction banquet from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Pi Kappa Alpha applauds the success and zeal of Mr. Joseph Plumeri. His life efforts are an inspiration
to all brothers who aspire to lead in their chapters, campuses and communities.
The 2013 Distinguished Achievement
Award recognized Kenneth W. Lowe
(North Carolina, Tau ’70). Brother
Lowe founded and launched Home
& Garden Television (HGTV). He
oversaw the acquisition of The Food
Network and The Travel Channel
and presided over the launches of
the DIY Network and The Cooking
Channel. Lowe serves on the board
of directors of the National Cable
& Telecommunications Association,
Paley Center for Media, Cincinnati
Business Committee and Cincinnati
Center City Development Corporation.

PORTRAIT OF AN AMERICAN SUCCESS
Joe Plumeri has risen from humble beginnings to blazing success through tenacity, faith and moxie.
“My dad filled our
heads with what
could be accomplished
if we worked hard
and dreamed big
dreams in America.
It was almost like he
programmed me
for success.”
– Joe Plumeri
J
oseph J. Plumeri (William & Mary,
Gamma ’64) was born in a blue collar
neighborhood in North Trenton,
New Jersey, the son of Josephine and
the late Samuel J. Plumeri, Sr., a Trenton
businessman, entrepreneur and community
leader. His grandparents immigrated to the
United States from Villalba, Sicily. He received
his bachelor of arts degree in history and
education from the College of William & Mary
and attended New York Law School.
Brother Plumeri’s corporate life started in
1968 at the small brokerage, Carter, Berlind
& Weill. He worked with one of the partners,
Sandy Weill, for over three decades as the
small investment firm transformed, becoming
part of Shearson, then American Express,
Shearson Lehman Brothers, the Travelers
Group and, finally, Citigroup. In 1999, Plumeri
headed the integration of the consumer
businesses of Travelers Group and Citicorp
after the $70 billion merger of the two firms
and served a year as CEO of Citibank, North
America. In 2000, he became chairman and
chief executive officer of the London-based
Willis Group Holdings at the request of Henry
Kravis and his company, Kohlberg Kravis
Roberts, which had just acquired Willis.
Plumeri transformed the long-established
but sleepy Willis. He took it public,
oversaw the construction of a new London
headquarters and acquired competitor Hilb
Rogal & Hobbs in a massive $2.1 billion
merger that doubled Willis’ American
presence and solidified its position as the

world’s third largest insurance broker. He
also negotiated a long-term lease and naming
rights to what had previously been Sears
Tower in Chicago, which is now Willis Tower,
the tallest building in the western hemisphere.
In 2004, Plumeri took the bold step of
refusing to accept contingent commissions
at Willis and oversaw the creation of Willis’
Client Bill of Rights that ensured transparency
in the company’s operations and practices.
A passionate champion of the insurance
industry, Plumeri once said, “Insurance is
the DNA of capitalism. Nothing would move,
nothing would be built, nothing would happen
without us.”
In 2009 and 2010, he was named to
Treasury & Risk magazine’s list of “100 Most
Influential People in Finance.” Plumeri was
honored by the Insurance Industry Charitable
Foundation in 2009 for his impact on the
reputation of the insurance industry and by
The Jackie Robinson Foundation in 2010 for
his career achievements.
Brother Plumeri owns minor league
baseball teams that are feeder clubs to the
New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.
The Yankee team, the Trenton Thunder,
plays in Samuel J. Plumeri, Sr. Field, which he
named after his father. Plumeri is an active
philanthropist. He committed $2 million
to establish the Plumeri Awards for Faculty
Excellence at the College of William & Mary,
funded the Joseph J. Plumeri Business
Scholarship and created the Joseph J. Plumeri
Endowment Fund for baseball scholarships at
the college. He provided the largest gift ever
made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for
the construction of the organization’s New
Jersey Chapter Headquarters, now named the
Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place.
He also contributed $1 million to the College
of St. Rose in Albany, New York, for the
development of the school’s Christian Plumeri
Sports Complex, which is named in honor of
his late son.
He currently serves on the boards of the
National Center on Addiction and Substance
Abuse, Mount Sinai Medical Center, the
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, the Jackie
Robinson Foundation, Carnegie Hall and
SHIELD & DIAMOND
American Friends of
the Churchill Museum
in London. He was
commissioner of the
New Jersey Sports and
Exposition Authority
from 1997 to 2004.
In spring 2011,
Plumeri made the
commencement
address to the
graduating class at
William & Mary, and
in summer 2011, he
was the grand marshall
for the Columbus Day
parade in New York
City.
But no one can tell
you who Joe Plumeri
is better than Joe
Plumeri. In his speech
to the graduating class
of William & Mary on
May 15, 2011, he said:
“I
n 1968, with a William & Mary degree
and two years of coaching football and
teaching history under my belt, I was going to
New York Law School part time. And I went
looking for a job. I figure, I’m a law student, I
ought to work in a law firm.
“It didn’t occur to me that maybe I ought to
be a lawyer first, but never mind.
“I didn’t know much about the law, but I
knew one thing: every place with three names
is a law firm. Like Dewey Cheatham & Howe.
So I found a place called Carter, Berlind &
Weill.
“Three names. A law firm, right? So I
showed up, walked in the door and asked for a
job.
“The receptionist sent me back to talk to
Mr. Sandy Weill. He asked me what I wanted
to do.
“I said I wanted to work at a law firm.
“He said, ‘This isn’t a law firm.’
“I go, ‘Really. Well, I’m flexible.’
“Turns out it was a brokerage.
“So, you see, your education doesn’t stop
when you graduate. I learned something right
there.
“I said, ‘I don’t know what you do here, but
I’ll bet I can do it.’
“Sandy Weill must have thought I had
moxie—you might say cojones now—because
SHIELD & DIAMOND
he gave me a job at his company—a company
you know by a different name today:
Citigroup.
“The firm back then didn’t have much room
for me. They gave me a student-sized desk and
plunked it half inside a closet, half sticking out
into the hallway.
“Remember,
absolutely anything
is possible.”
“‘Hey, Joey Baby,’ the guys in suits would
say, slapping me upside the head as they
walked passed my desk, heading in to review
their numbers with Mr. Weill.
“Twenty years later, ‘Joey Baby,’ who didn’t
know what a brokerage was but could rope-adope with the guys in suits, became president
of Shearson Lehman Brothers.
“And those who used ‘Joey Baby’s’ head
for a speed bag? I remembered each of their
names. They found themselves on a different
compensation plan later on.
“That’s what you have to do to play in traffic:
show up, knock on doors, scrap, be engaged, do
something. Things will happen....”
“W
hen you do, keep four big ideas in
mind. You could call them four signs
along the road.
“Here’s Number one: have a vision and go
for it.
“Number two: bring passion to your vision.

monument to his vision that still stands today

“My father was my best friend. When I ran
into trouble in my freshman year and wanted
to leave William & Mary, he told me, as only a
dad can, to stick it out. My mother, Josephine,
was by his side all the way....”
“A
bout ten years ago, I found myself in
Paris. I was 57, basically retired. I had
spent 32 years of my life with Citigroup, the
place I started, when I thought Sandy Weill
ran a law firm.

“Number three: match your passion and

“And number four: remember, absolutely
anything is possible....”
“M
y grandfather came here on a
boat from Sicily, arriving at Ellis
Island. He figured the best way to become an
American was to do American things. So he
pursued an unlikely career in baseball: with
a thousand dollars he recruited Babe Ruth
and Lou Gehrig to barnstorm the country, the
diamond heroes inspiring kids at every stop.
“This immigrant, this man with a vision,
went on to own the Trenton Giants, a team
Willie Mays played for on his way to the Big
Leagues.
“Then Trenton went without a pro baseball
team for over forty years until my father,
Sam, reignited my grandfather’s vision. Sam
was 80 years old at the time, just getting over
quintuple bypass surgery. But he was like a
thunder you couldn’t control.
“‘I want to bring baseball back to Trenton,’
he told anyone who’d listen.
“‘Why don’t you get some rest, Pop,’ I told
him.
“He told me we should raise money to buy
a team, move it to New Jersey, and rejuvenate
the town. He won that argument with me.
“He also won over the politicians. He
won over the press. And he won over the
community. At a point in life when many
people sit back and watch games on their
sofas, he was helping to build a ballpark – a

“A guy named Henry Kravis contacted me.
That’s a name you might not know, but he’s
one of the titans of global investment. Henry
and his firm, KKR, wanted me to take over and
revitalize an old British brokerage they owned
called the Willis Group.
“By now, I’d figured out the difference
between a brokerage and a law firm, so I had
that going for me.
“I went up to London to check out the firm.
I could have walked in acting like an extra in
The King’s Speech, but that’s not me. Instead,
the chilly reception I got in London was as if
Fonzi had ridden his motorcycle right into
Buckingham Palace.
“I wasn’t going to try to pretend to be a
British gentleman. I know who I am, and
Henry wanted me running Willis because of
who I am.
“So I walk in, offer a proper handshake, and
I say, ‘How ya doin?’!
“This started what’s been a wonderful
decade at the helm of Willis by being true to
myself. And wherever you go from here, you
all have to be true to yourselves, too....”
“M

If he was Italian, he would’ve been
really great.
“After World War II, after enduring
hardship with his countrymen and leading
Britain through the Blitz and onto victory, he
ran for re-election and was soundly beaten.
“He said, ‘Success is never final, failure is
never fatal: it is courage that counts.’
“You can constantly strive to make a
difference other people don’t have the courage
to do: The courage to have a vision. The
courage to have passion. The courage to have
integrity. The courage to believe that anything
is possible.”

THE POWER OF BEING YOURSELF:
A GAME PLAN FOR SUCCESS BY PUTTING PASSION INTO YOUR LIFE AND WORK
by Joe Plumeri (William & Mary, Gamma ’64)
E
veryone imagines top CEOs as larger-thanlife figures who do things no one else could.
But deep down, a good business leader is
an everyman who combines vision and high
energy with the ability to connect with and learn
from all types of people. In The Power of Being
Yourself, renowned business leader Joe Plumeri
offers simple yet profound guidance on how to
stay positive, motivate yourself and others, and
achieve success in your life and work.
Plumeri’s Game Plan for Success features eight
key principles, from “Everyone Has the Same
Plumbing”, in which his fish-out-of-water experience as CEO and chairman of a London-based
company reveals how cultural differences can
be overcome as people everywhere respond to
authenticity, to “You Gotta Have Purpose!”, which
explores the transformative ingredient that leads
to tangible progress. And because this book is
meant to be revisited and consulted whenever
you need fresh inspiration or practical advice,
The Power of Being Yourself also features a final
section – “Applying the Principles” – imparting
further guidance and checklists.
By sharing his own experiences – and candidly
exploring high-stakes business decisions along
with many personal triumphs and tragedies –
Plumeri explains that the secret to success is
found not in boardroom strategy or corporate
philosophy, but rather in allowing passion,
purpose, and true emotions inform your approach and guide your relationships. His book
is a timely wake-up call in a world where heartless electronic communication too often takes
precedence over genuine connection. Plumeri
reveals that if we can live in the moment and
be honest and true in our emotions, the effect
carries over into how we live all facets of our lives.
“Joe Plumeri’s book is
