PRESCOTT & RUSSELL
Known as Ontario’s easternmost gateway, the United Counties of Prescott-Russell is nestled
between the Ottawa River and Highway 417, and between Ottawa and Montreal. Through its
scenic rural landscapes and common agricultural yields of corn, soy, wheat, etc., things seem to
slow to a relaxed pace, where you feel at peace and humbled by the sea of greens and yellows
that sway with the winds. Driving down the 417 doesn’t give this place justice, but a slow ride
through our vast expanse of country and riverside roads is enough to bring your fast-paced
world to a halt… if only for a moment.

Our rich heritage and cultural background, from the blend of our Francophone and Anglophone
roots, have created a melting pot of bilingualism and local pride that is unique, where both
languages are commonly spoken, understood and valued by its community. This heritage is
evident when you step into the region and take in our architecture and culture, or through a
simple, colourful discussion with the locals. This pride is also reflected in how our businesses
welcome passersby, their warmth and welcoming nature is ever present, they will bend over
backwards to make certain that your experience is positive.
We hope you enjoy discovering our region’s best kept secrets and treasures through this
Discovery Guide, or by visiting our website: www.tprt.ca. You can also follow us on Facebook
and Twitter or contact us directly at the office; it’ll be our pleasure to help you in any way we
can… À bientôt!

RUSSELL
Embrun, Russell
Chantal Roy, founder of Prezence Media, moved to the charming
community of Russell in 2002. She has no problem listing Russell’s many
attractions: the New York Central Trail offers bike and walking paths
connecting the villages and neighborhoods in the townshi p, and boasts
quaint little stores and organizations such as la Boulangerie du Village and
la Maison des arts, making it a great stop to visit. “Lots of people living in
the city look to get out of the city on weekends,” she says. “Good news
- we’re only 20 minutes away!” As a vibrant place to live, the warmth of
its residents is palpable: “People chat with each other on the street or in
beautiful local parks, both in English and in French. It sounds silly, but
you don’t see that in the city.”

CLARENCE-ROCKLAND
Bourget, Clarence Creek, Rockland, Cheney, Hammond, Saint-Pascal-Baylon
The Clarence-Rockland Museum was founded almost by accident. When Gilles Chartrand
heard of small models of Rockland heritage buildings being stored in a basement in Hull,
he brought all of the models back to Rockland. They eventually found a permanent home
in a 100-year-old former school on Laurier Street, along with millions more artefacts
from the Eastern Ontario region, and now as a local museum, it attracts locals and visitors
alike. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, this is the best hobby.” Clarence-Rockland, the
largest municipality in Prescott-Russell, is no typical Franco-Ontarian town. With a rich
cultural heritage, its proximity to Ottawa, and its attractive parks and cultural buildings,
Clarence-Rockland is also home to the Canadian International Hockey Academy, where
you regularly see professional teams and players practice.

THE NATION
Fournier, Riceville, Saint-Albert, Saint-Bernardin, Saint-Isidore, Sainte Rose, Limoges
Six years ago, living in Montreal at the time, Alain Routhier and his wife faced
a choice: what type of quality of life should they be offering to their children?
Preferring to escape the urban bustle for a much quieter lifestyle, the family
relocated just outside of Casselman in The Nation, where they started their business,
Dans le Sens du Grain, a custom woodworking and design shop. “The Nation has
been a very welcoming environment for both my business and family, says Routhier.
“While I still enjoy visiting Montreal once in a while, our home town is always alive
with things to do and places to see. We find great places across the municipality
for all types of activities; fishing, cycling, snowmobiling, ATVs, even my favourite
pastime: soap box racing!” The Nation is also home to two of the major attractions
in Prescott-Russell: Calypso Waterpark and St-Albert Cheese Factory.

CASSELMAN
Guy Parent moved to Casselman looking for a quiet place to raise his family. Immediately
after he arrived, Casselman felt like a good fit, “very, very vibrant,” he says. As part of the
organizing committee, the success of the annual Christmas Festival, and its annual Santa
Run and hockey tournaments, continues to attract people from other communities, and
Parent is proud of his home and eager to show it off. Very much a sports-loving town,
with its golf course and sports complex, Casselman is now bustling with travel stops, such
as a newly opened hotel, and one of the most sought-after micro-breweries in Eastern
Ontario, Cassel Brewery. “I’m in close proximity to the city, but I’m living in a village,”
he says. “They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I strongly believe in that, I’ve seen
it with my kids.”

ALFRED-PLANTAGENET
Alfred, Curran, Plantagenet, Wendover
Fifteen years ago, John Anderson turned the best part-time job he’s ever had into his fulltime profession. Anderson’s business, the Ottawa River Musky Factory, offers guided trips
for anglers looking for Muskies, a species of fish known for size and strength. And there is no
better place than Alfred-Plantagenet for a Musky angler, says Anderson. The Ottawa River
isn’t necessarily the most famous destination for Musky hunters, but it’s growing in popularity.
“Anglers guided by the Ottawa River Musky Factory caught fish over 48 inches every 2.6
days last year.” After decades working as a guide, Anderson says he’s only looking ahead.
“I’ll never retire,” he says. “I absolutely love my job.” Anderson is doing his part to promote
the area’s best-kept secret, while keeping an eye out for environmental protection. Several
areas in Alfred-Plantagenet, under the South Nation Conservation Authority, are ideal for
conservationists, bird and wildlife watchers or just those looking to spend a day outdoors.

CHAMPLAIN
L’Orignal, Vankleek Hill
Louise Bédard was born and raised in L’Orignal, one of the oldest villages along the
Ottawa River and part of the Township of Champlain. The view is unbeatable, she
says. “The mountains are beautiful every day, every season.” Bédard spent her 30year teaching career in L’Orignal, and co-founded Patrimoine L’Orignal-Longueuil
Heritage (PLLH) in 2005. She is also responsible for activities and exhibits at the Old
Jail in L’Orignal, the 2nd oldest of its kind in Canada. “L’Orignal has always been my
home,” says Bédard. History is visible everywhere in Champlain, which encompasses
both L’Orignal and Vankleek Hill; you can walk around and tour the old, beautifully
maintained red brick Victorian-style homes in both villages, or even visit a part of history
within the Higginson Tower. It’s also home to Canada’s largest organic microbrewery,
Beau’s, and some wonderful restaurants, shops and art galleries.

HAWKESBURY
In Hawkesbury, Eric Charlebois, an author who has won Trillium Book Awards for his
poetry, says he prefers a bit of artistic anonymity, and through his efforts as a business
owner and volunteer, his artistic work is just as important as his community and business
work. From gift boutiques, high-end men’s clothing to sports stores, Hawkesbury
contains some of the best kept secrets in the region. “La Maison de l’Ile, for instance, a
historic building on The Chenail Island along the Ottawa River, is one of the most beautiful
cultural centres I’ve ever seen,” mentions Mr. Charlebois. As an artist, Charlebois is
inspired by Hawkesbury’s industrial heritage, being the site of one of the largest sawmills
in Eastern Canada, back in the 19th century. “Hawkesbury has everything set up for it
to be artistic,” he says. “It’s a hotbed for Franco-Ontarian art, which is supported by
Francophones and Francophiles alike.”

EAST HAWKESBURY
Chute-à-Blondeau, Saint-Eugène, Ste-Anne-de-Prescott, Pointe Fortune
Christiane Parisien has lived in Chute-à-Blondeau for 34 years and has been a
community volunteer for almost as long, currently helping out at the town’s new
community centre, which offers an “incredible” panoramic view of the Ottawa River,
making it “one of the most beautiful venues between Montreal and Ottawa.” Chuteà-Blondeau is not the only community that boasts beautiful scenery in Hawkesbury
East. From the rolling hills and stretching fields of Ste-Anne- de -Prescott, the
forests and nature trails in Voyageur Provincial Park to the historical landmarks and
river scenery in Pointe-Fortune, the township is a great site for weddings, reunions
or other outdoor activities. And every visitor is always greeted with a friendly smile,
“we make it our priority to accommodate and welcome everyone who stops by.”
