The tensile force to intrinsic weight ratio is very favourable. Because wire ropes are so easy to handle, an in view of the almost unlimited number of end connector combinations, it is very cost-effective to create technically and esthetically outstanding solutions. WIRE ROPE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE SAFETY FACTOR 3 Wire ropes are made of high-strength cold-drawn wires. The wires (1) are helically wound around the core (2) to form a strand (3). The strands are then twisted around a steel core (5) to produce the finished rope (6). 4 1 Wires 2 Core wire MODULUS OF ELASTICITY 1 3 Strand 4 Twisted length 6 Wire rope 1 7 Jakob® code filament METALLIC CROSS SECTION 5 Elongation under load: The tension/elongation curve of new wire ropes is not linear, and different curves apply to the load and relief conditions. The numeric values of the modulus of elasticity (E) are averages. A smaller number of wires and strands in the rope, a longer twisted length and a longer application period produce a larger E number. 5 Steel core (SE) 7 Stranded ropes with steel cores (SE ) (6 x 7 and 6 x 36 ) 1 E = 1.0 – 1.3 • 105 N/mm 2 The metallic cross section (in mm2) of the wire rope is the sum of all individual wire cross sections (A). 2 Stranded and helical ropes (1 × 19) E = 1.4 – 1.7 • 105 N/mm 2 A • 19 = mm2 1 Fsv Thermal elongation is calculated the same as for steel. The permissible service temperatures range from – 40°C to 100°C, briefly up to 250°C. Fs L f WIRE ROPE FORCE Fig. 1 The sum of the pretensioning force (Fsv) and of the applied forces (G) is the effective rope force (Fs). Vertical forces (G) applied to a horizontally tensioned rope produce very high rope forces. Q A G Fs G Fsv Fig. 2 B Before you select a cable assembly, determine the effective force (A) which the wire rope must be able to withstand. Then add a safety factor (B) to assure that the wire rope can definitely handle the effective force. Turning the assembly counterclockwise relaxes it. Fig. 3 The purpose of end connectors is to enable the fixing of the wire rope. At the same time, the elements with external (male) and internal (female) threads fulfill an important additional function: they allow the rope to be tensioned and/ or relaxed. A Clockwise rotation: this tightens the screw elements and tensions the rope. B Anticlockwise rotation: this backs out the screw elements and relaxes the rope. TENSIONING OPTION = Make longer (relax) Left-hand thread = Make shorter (tension) R A Secure Fig. 4 R Right-hand thread R Cable assemblies should have a tensioning device at least at one end. if this is not possible for technical reasons, a turnbuckle (B/C) can be inserted between the ends. There are various ways to do this (with plain holes): D Fig. 7 Individual wire ropes can be spanned across 30 m. The longer the span (L), the larger the intrinsic weight (Q) of the rope. The pretensioning force (Fv) must be increased to prevent sag but this requires stronger end posts. The pretensioning force of a wire rope with a diameter between 2 – 6 mm is 0.1 to 1 kN. J2 ATTACHMENT METHODS IN WOOD 36 ® INOX LINE STRANDED LITZEN WIRE & DRAHTSEILE WIRE ROPES 10810 We assemble all end connectors with wire ropes and stranded wire manufactured in-house. Jakob® wire ropes and stranded wire are subjected to strict quality inspections. All components are carefully matched. This assures superior functionality and compliance with guaranteed breaking loads. For safety reasons, use only Jakob® wire ropes in combination with items designed for on-site assembly. Select the row which lists the pitch angle you need for your application. Caution: the maximum post fitting pitch is 60°. • Now, look for the outside diameter d1 that you want your post fitting to have. Length lx (see adjacent illustration for details) is listed where this column intersects with your pitch angle row. • For each post fitting, length lx is important for defining the assembly length. If you wish to use an external thread instead of a countersunk head, the correct assembly length is obtained by adding the protruding length of the screw. α 0° 5° 10° 15° 20° 25° 30° 35° 40° 45° 50° 55° 60° ø d1= 8 mm ø d1= 10 mm ø d1= 13 mm ø d1= 18 mm ø d1= 22 mm ø d1= 24 mm ø d1= 32 mm ø d1= 35 mm ø d1= 40 mm lx 5,0 3,4 3,7 4,1 4,5 4,9 5,3 5,8 6,4 7,0 7,8 8,7 9,9 lx 5,0 3,4 3,9 4,3 4,8 5,3 5,9 6,5 7,2 8,0 9,0 10,1 11,7 lx 5,0 3,6 4,1 4,7 5,4 6,0 6,8 7,8 8,5 9,5 10,7 12,3 14,3 lx 5,0 3,8 4,6 5,4 6,3 7,2 8,2 9,3 10,6 12,0 13,7 15,9 18,6 lx 5,0 4,0 4,9 5,9 7,0 8,1 9,4 10,7 12,2 14,0 16,1 18,7 22,0 lx 5,0 4,1 5,1 6,2 7,4 8,6 9,9 11,4 13,1 15,0 17,3 20,1 23,8 lx 5,0 4,4 5,8 7,3 8,8 10,5 12,2 14,2 16,4 19,0 22,1 25,9 30,7 lx 5,0 4,5 6,1 7,7 9,4 11,2 13,1 15,3 17,7 20,5 23,9 28,0 33,3 lx 5,0 4,7 6,5 8,3 10,3 12,3 14,5 17,0 19,8 23,0 26,8 31,6 37,6 1 ød α α max. 60° lx mm lx Length lx See the table above to determine the correct assembly length.
