Dear Parents & Guardians,
Social responsibility is always a focus of our work with students. This year, Teena Campbell, our Vice-Principal and the Social Responsibility committee planned themes for each
month of the school year. For the month of October, we will focus on gratitude, which ties
in with Thanksgiving. Classes will do activities based on that theme and we will have an assembly on October 26 to reflect on what we learned and accomplished and we will announce
the theme for November.
Collegiality is one of the values of our school district and therefore team work is an essential part of our work as staff. There are many ways staff work together. For instance, our
Learning Support Teacher (Mme Efford) and classroom Teachers work together to assess
children’s needs and plan a program to meet those needs. Many students learn easily in the
classroom. Others require more repetition and / or practice while others need small group
or one-on-one intensive intervention. Our goal is to address children’s needs as much as
possible in the classroom setting. At times, Mme Efford or another staff member may
work in the classroom to support small group work while in other instances, she may take
students out of class for more intensive intervention. You are welcome to ask your child’s
teacher or Mme Efford if you would like more information.
Communicating Student Learning is a fundamental part of teachers work. Each teacher
will be communicating with you regularly about the big ideas or themes that will be or has
been the learning focus for the month. As well they will be communicating with you monthly
about your child’s progress in at least one area of learning. They may communicate these
things with you in a variety of ways including emails, phone calls, one on one conversations,
their website if they have one or through newsletters. In addition they will be sending
samples of your child’s work home. Be sure to spend some time looking at these samples of
work with your child along with the descriptive feedback or rubric that accompanies it.
Here are some questions that might help guide the conversation with your child:
What was the task or assignment? What were you expected to do?
What were the criteria for success?
What did you do well…which of the criteria for success did you meet?
Which criteria was hard for you? What would help you to meet this criteria next time?
How can I help you at home?
Please mark your calendar for attending Student-Led conferences with your child on November 19.

Halloween Activities
On October 30th, students are invited to wear their Halloween costumes for the afternoon. They will be able to change during lunch just before 1:00 pm.
1:00 pm. We will be having our traditional parade in the school. Parents are invited to attend.
Classes may have other activities planned for the afternoon. Please check with your
child’s / children’s teachers for further information.
Our PAC is organizing a dance that night. All the family is welcome to attend!
Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)
The British Columbia Teacher-Librarians' Association would like to invite everyone to drop
everything and read for 20 minutes on this date. SD72 schools will be participating in the
challenge with planned activities. At our school, we invite you to stay for 20 minutes when
you drop off your child in the morning as the whole school will drop everything and read
from 8:30 – 8:50 am.
Messages
There have been many phone calls lately from parents trying to get messages to students at the end of the day. While we appreciate that sometimes this is unavoidable, please try and make bus, daycare, playdate etc
arrangements with your child in the morning. It can be very difficult to
track down students at the end of the day. Thank you

Halloween Safety Tips for Trick or Treaters
Tis the season for ghosts and ghouls! But Beware, with Halloween fast approaching the safety of your
children should be foremost. Keep these tips in mind before heading out for your Halloween festivities.

Never trick-or-treat alone, Always walk with an adult or group of friends.\
Make sure you can be seen, wear reflective, bright color costumes or fasten reflective tape to costume

Carry a flashlight so you can see where you are going, Walk, don’t run
Stay in familiar neighborhoods, don’t cut across driveways or yards.

Make sure costume does not drag and trip you, wear appropriate footwear, Use makeup, not masks, this
allows you to see better and be aware of your surroundings.

Obey traffic signals and give traffic the right of way. Don’t crisscross the street, go up one side and down
the other. Don’t dart out from between parked cars, Watch out for cars pulling out or backing up

Only approach houses that have outside lights on and never enter a stranger’s home or car for treats.
Don’t eat any treats until and adult has inspected them.

Stay away from and do not pet animals you don’t know

Have fun but be aware!
The influenza vaccine protects against viruses that cause seasonal influenza, often
called the flu. The vaccine does not protect against other viruses or bacteria that cause
colds or stomach illness such as “stomach flu.”
Influenza, often called seasonal flu, is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by
the influenza virus. A person with influenza is at risk of other infections, including viral or bacterial pneumonia (infections of the lungs). Influenza spreads easily from person to person through coughing,
sneezing, or having close face-to-face contact. The virus can also be spread when a person touches an
object contaminated with the influenza virus and then touches his or her mouth or nose. In BC, the following groups are eligible for the free annual vaccination:

Children and adults with chronic health conditions and their household contacts

Healthy children aged 6 to 23 months

Household
contacts and
caregivers of infants aged 0 to 23 months

Pregnant women in their 3rd trimester / People 65 or older and their caregivers

Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities

Health care workers / Emergency responders / People who work with poultry and swine

Employees and inmates at BC correctional facilities

Those who provide care or service in potential outbreak settings housing high risk persons
(e.g. crew on ships)
Influenza vaccine is available through health units and physicians .

Ready to Learn (Setting Up Routines)
Setting up daily routines will help your child do his/her best. Consider the routines
below to make your child feel more ...
Relaxed. Music can help your child avoid the morning rush. Play a soothing tape and
ask him to be dressed and ready by the time it’s over. Tip: On Sundays, have him put
each days outfit for the coming week on hangers labeled Monday through Friday.
Energized. A good breakfast increases concentration. Offer your youngster healthy
choices. Examples: a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter; orange juice blended with
fruit & yogurt; instant oatmeal.
Connected. Talking about the school day lets your child know you care. Ask him to
share two good things that happened during the day. Prompt him with specific questions, such as “What activity did you like the best?” & “ Why?”
Prepared. Studying a little every day is the best way to learn new material. Help your
youngster choose time for homework when he is most alert - and try not to change it.
Rested. A set bedtime helps kids fall asleep more quickly. Suggest that your child get
in bed 15 minutes early to read, make up stories or talk quietly with you.
