Words put H3W into action
Dear Colleagues:
As I’ve mentioned in
previous columns, the
H3W Leadership Behaviors program has made a
big difference in my life,
both professionally and
personally. I’ve already
written about one of the
behaviors, being “in the
moment.” And while
that is the first leadership behavior we are
taught, it is just the beginning.
Recently, I have had
the opportunity to witness firsthand
the value of two more leadership behaviors — “having courageous conversations” and “being curious vs.
judgmental.” Practicing these behaviors no matter what your title is will be
integral as we work together towards
continuous improvement.
Since Windham Hospital is farther
along the H3W journey, work groups
have been established throughout the
organization. I attended
some of these meetings
and am thankful for the
opportunity to have such
open and honest conversations with staff members.
It was a really enlightening experience, and an
experience I hope to have
on a regular basis at both
Windham and Backus
hospitals. People were authentic and humanistic.
They were engaged and
enthusiastic. And while
they were not judgmental, they were
definitely curious — which I admit led
to some courageous conversations.
In a nutshell, these meetings put
our H3W language into action. And
while not everything was easy to talk
about, this is exactly the kind of communication we need to have across
our region.
No one should be afraid to ask questions, to speak openly and candidly,
Dave’s
Desk
about how they feel. Although many
times we might not get the answers
we hope for, sometimes just getting a
straight answer to a question, or even
hearing “I don’t know,” can go a long
way. It’s all about transparency.
Soon, these workgroups will be
formed on the Backus campus. Our
steering committee is hard at work to
make this happen, and training is underway so that all staff understand
H3W leadership behaviors. But you
don’t have to wait — start practicing
leadership behaviors now. Be in the
moment, be authentic and humanistic, be accountable, provide timely and
clear feedback, to name a few — and
you will be amazed at how doing
these things can transform your environment at work and at home.
That’s all for now,
Dave

Thirty-five physicians on the
Backus and Windham hospital
medical staffs have been
named to Connecticut magazine’s annual listing of “top
doctors” in the state.
Selections are based on
questionnaires the magazine
sent to doctors across the state,
asking them to recommend a
physician to whom they’d send
a loved one. The top vote-getters make the list.
The physicians are featured in the April issue of Connecticut magazine, which is on news stands now.

Backus Bennies honor ‘celebrities’ for their support
In the spirit of the Oscars, Backus
welcomed benefactors to the third annual Bennies event on Friday, March
28, in true celebrity style — with red
carpet glamour, paparazzi photos and
golden award statues.
With Hollywood style, the Office of
Philanthropy and Development recognized donors for their generous contributions and highlighted programs
and services made possible by their
support.
Using creativity and imagination,
the Backus Bennies rivals ordinary
donor events — breaking convention
and setting a new
standard of excellence. Guests
come out in their
finest gowns and
suits to be honored for helping to
bring better health to Eastern Connecticut.
“Throughout the year, our benefactors provide support to perpetuate
health initiatives in our community.
The Bennies event is just one way for
us to express our gratitude,” said
Genevieve Schies, Program Manager
for the Backus Office of Philanthropy
and Development. “As confirmed by
clinicians in the audience, donor gifts
make a daily impact on our patients
and allow us to carry out our mission
of putting the patients first — always.”
Hosting this year’s event, mistresses
of ceremonies Mary Bylone, RN, MSM,
CNML, Regional Vice President of Patient Care Services and Daryl Hurlock,
RN, Regional Manager of LDRP and the
Women’s Health Clinic, bounced a humorous dialogue back and forth. Hurlock told the audience that she had
“some experience for the job” — having been to the Oscars 14 times herself. With her official badge in hand,
Hurlock explained how she fills seats
for celebrities who need to leave the
floor during the star-studded ceremony.

teers across the country for their
noble efforts to foster a community of
service.
Backus and Windham hospital volunteers logged some noteworthy
hours this year. According to the Independent Sector, the national average value of each volunteer hour is
$22.14. During the last 12 months,
the 486 volunteers at Backus contributed 45,400 service hours —
breaking a milestone dollar value of
$1,005,156. The 310 volunteers at
Windham also had a commendable
year contributing 17,313 hours with a
dollar value of $383,310. At the state
level, the dollar value for each volunteer hour is even higher than the national average, meaning that
volunteer hours in Connecticut yield
even greater dollar amounts.
“Our volunteers are an inspiration,”
said Mary Brown, CAVS, Backus Volunteer and Guest Services Program

departments throughout the hospital
campus and satellite locations. Regardless of the reasons for donating
their time, our volunteers are a wonderful accompaniment to staff and
help reinforce a positive patient experience.”
Volunteers at Backus and Windham
serve in countless ways. They provide support to committees, offices,
libraries and gift shops by entering
data, filing, and answering telephones. They assist in the Emergency
Department, transport patients with
wheelchairs and stretchers, and offer
directions. The list goes on and on.
“Our volunteers have an important
impact on our hospital by serving our
patients, their families and our community,” said Rebecca Putnam, Windham Volunteer Services Program
Manager and Job Shadow Coordinator. “On a daily basis they offer support to our staff, kindness and
compassion to our patients, all the
while acting as ambassadors of the
hospital. They are truly an inspiration.”
In honor of National Volunteer
Week, Backus will host its annual volunteer awards luncheon on Friday,
April 25 in the Chelsearose Ballroom
at the Holiday Inn in Norwich. Volunteers with more than 25 annual hours
of service are invited. Windham will
host a volunteer recognition tea on
Wednesday, April 30, at the Historic
Grant House in Willimantic. Wind-

ham volunteers will also enjoy their
annual Great Escape on May 30, a tradition since 1981.
“On behalf of the Backus and Windham hospital communities, we applaud all our volunteers for stepping
forward in such an admirable way.
Each day, you help us focus on what
matters most — our patients,” said
Dave Whitehead, President, Hartford
HealthCare East Region. “Thank you
for choosing to support our mission,
our goals, and your hospitals.”

benefactors and recognized the importance
of their investments in time, effort and contributions.
“With your support, our Community Health
Education team reaches out to populations of
people who have historically been underserved,” said Whitehead. “Sustainable —
meaningful — health programs have been
developed in Plainfield, Jewett City,
Greeneville, and Baltic.”
Whitehead highlighted the Baltic Healthy
Community initiative, a long-term program
aimed at improving overall health in this vil-
lage of Sprague by offering a comprehensive
schedule of health screenings, educational
programs, preventive and primary care, social
services and more. To date, benefactors have
helped to facilitate more than 750 health and
wellness encounters with Baltic residents.
Whitehead concluded, “We have two simple words for you — thank you. Your gifts
stay local and sustain a healthy community.
Without your support, the programs I spoke
about tonight would not be possible. Thank
you for helping us achieve our aspirations for
a healthier tomorrow.”
