...and a word or two from the President's seat — Skip Carter
Fall is definitely here. Suesan and I were in Toronto
for Thanksgiving the middle of October (yes,
Canadian Thanksgiving falls in October, so we get
to enjoy the holiday first with Sueze's family in
Toronto, then with my family in California). We took
a few days to drive up to Georgian Bay, then across
through Algonquin Regional Park.
Algonquin is huge, and we hit it at the peak of Fall
color. It was also the last week of their season, and
everyone was getting ready to close up for winter. It
sure was beautiful and boy are there a lot of lakes
and waterways.
We have a new advertiser this month, Beardsley
Construction. Sean and his dad, Jim are regulars at
GPX events. Little did we know that Sean is a General
Contractor, doing new construction and remodeling in
the Long Beach area. You can see the ad on page 9.
If you've been to our Breakfast Club in the last
couple of months, you've probably noticed several
members wearing individualized shirts and jackets
and other apparel. Karen and Bob Lewis have started
their own company, Long Beach Embroidery. They
can do one-off items or large orders, and are very
willing to work with you to get what you want. In
addition, they have generously offered to donate
10% of the profits from sales to members to GPX
fund raising efforts — How generous is that!!!
Well, we're starting to approach the end of the year.
This has certainly been an interesting one, with the
economy going in the tank a year ago. I believe
we're all relieved to see, what appears to be, the
light at the end of the tunnel. We're all still holding
our breath, but it does look like we may be pulling
out of the recession.
Our annual Holiday Party is a little over one month
away, December 5. Please get your reservations
in to Hazel. There are several things (like gifts to
attendees) that we can't pin down until we have
a reasonable idea of how many will be there. It's
4
going to be a very nice evening. The team has been
working on it for months, and Frisco's is very excited
about hosting us.
I think we can safely say that the results of our
election for the 2010 Board of Directors are final.
Suesan Way will be president, Rick Mills VP, Marty
Goldsmith Secretary, Greg Schill Treasurer, Jimmie
Mitchell Membership and Hazel Hofsess Activities
Director, and I'm staying on as Editor.
We're all looking forward to another great GPX year
in 2010. I want to thank all of you. It's been an
honor and my pleasure to serve as President for the
past five years. It's been a good run.
On the Cover...
The La Carrera Panamericana certainly put Porsche on the
racing map in the early 1950s. This 2000 mile road race is
considered the most gruelling in the world, running through
the mountains, deserts and jungles of Mexico.
The 2009 event, run October 23-29, has just concluded.
Winning the Historic A Class was the Benton Performance
prepared 356A owned by Robert Curry and co-driven with
Ricky Shaw. http://www.lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx/ is
the link to the event website.
GPX is co-sponsoring the annual Benton BBQ on
November 7. This 356 will most likely be there, along with
several other very interesting vehicles (probably a new
Panamera for viewing and a test drive?).

Arredondo Motorsports Open House & Barbeque
story & photos by Jimmie Mitchell
Art Arredondo had a very successful Open
House September 12 celebrating the
2nd anniversary of his auto repair shop,
Arredondo Motorsports. Quite a group of
family and friends were there socializing
with GPX.
Art was a gracious host, providing
comfortable surroundings to enjoy good
conversations and good food. The menu
included BBQ hot links, shrimp, tacos,
carne asada, al pastor, carnitas,
marinated wings & chicken, rice &
beans AND four different types of
salsa. There was a large assortment of
beer, soft drinks and water.

Cristina

On display in the garage was my
911 2.7 engine, undergoing repair
from a recent engine fire. The engine
sustained damage to the gas lines
and heat damage to some of the
surrounding parts.
I decided while the engine was being
repaired that I would take the opportunity
to paint some of the engine parts to give
it that new appearance. Many people who
saw the engine commented on how nice
the engine appeared.
Art has a very neat and well kept shop, with
three service bays. Although this was not a Tech Session,
Art answered many questions about his shop and the work
he is capable of doing. My personal experience is that Art
is very professional, giving you very precise, well written
quotes for repair and excellent repairs.
My thanks to Art Arredondo for giving us an
opportunity to socialize and enjoy a very good
meal with other Porschephiles on a beautiful
Saturday afternoon.

Bob
Lee's 2009 Double Best of Show Wins:
At the Quail, A Motorsports Gathering and Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
An Unprecedented Achievement
by Patty Reilly
photos by John Reilly
Monterey's Classic Cars Week is an extravaganza
which features first and foremost the Pebble Beach
Concours d'Elegance and the Quail Motorsports
Gathering. In addition, there is a breathtaking array of
events: The Quail Rally, Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours
on the Avenue, Automobilia Monterey, Pebble Beach
Tour d'Elegance, the RM Auction, Concorso Italiano,
Bonhams & Butterfields Auction, the Kruse International
Auction, Russo & Steel Auction, and the Mecum Auction.
There is also the Monterey Historic Automobile Races,
Gooding & Company Auction... And more.
All aspects of these events considered, there is nothing
to equal or surpass this automotive extravaganza
anywhere on the planet, which makes Bob Lee's double
victory all the more impressive.
Celebrating 59 years in mid-August 2009, the Pebble
Beach Concours d'Elegance reaffirmed its unique
international reputation as the greatest show of its kind
with the Best of Show award to Robert M. Lee's 1938
Horch 853 Voll & Ruhrbeck sport Cabriolet. The event
takes place at the fabled Pebble Beach Golf Links the third
Sunday of every August.
On the previous Friday to Pebble Beach, Lee's 1938 Alfa
Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Spyder was awarded Best
of Show at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering held at
Quail Lodge. The Rolex Daytona watch was presented
at the awards ceremony, noted by all entrants for "the
vehicle that has achieved what they believe to be the best
representation of historic excellence."
Bob Lee's lifetime dedication to the automobile was
instrumental in his instincts on restoring and entering
the 1937 Horch. "It has wonderful lines, a great proven
chassis and all the beauty that make it the whole package.
Pebble Beach is the greatest car show in the world, and
winning here is indescribable."
The Horch emerged victorious out
of 32 classes of automobiles, and
beat the most expert and dedicated
competition in the world - from over
30 states and 19 countries. The
Horch Company, dating back to 1899,
and established by August Horch,
introduced the 850 series in the 1930s,
featuring a 5-liter straight-eight engine.
The subsequent Model 853 has a
shorter wheelbase and was especially
popular among the rich and famous
in the late 1930s Germany. The car
8
Arriving at the ramp for the awards ceremony, the
Horch is cheered by thousands of spectators amongst
the fireworks and cofetti
offered luxury at a competitive price. The last Horch was
manufactured in 1958.
The estimated value of the assembled automobiles at
Pebble Beach was $250 million. Pebble Beach Chairman
Sandra Button: "The Concours is an annual glimpse of
history's most illustrious and significant automobiles.
It's absolutely thrilling to see more than 100 years of
magnificent machines lining the 18th fairway - coming
from places as far as Hong Kong,
Argentina and Australia. Plans are
already underway for the 2010
event, which will feature Alfa
Romeo and Pierce-Arrow. It will
also welcome back Hot Rods as
well as American motorcycles.

Editor: If you've been to a Grand Prix Region
event in the last 25 or so years, you've probably
seen John and Patty Reilly in attendance. That
is, unless they were on assignment somewhere
in the world photographing things like the
Australian America's Cup
John and Patty are Charter members of the
Grand Prix Region, and have been PCA members
for 42 years. I've only been photographing
for GPX for 5 or 6 years, and I have photos of
them winning concours trophies at two parades,
autocrossing and others.
Alone with his Horch 853 and the Best of Show
Lalique trophy, Robert Lee appears every bit as
elegant as whomever had been the original owner.

Sustainability and Self-Reliance: The Gift That Miltiplies
by Norma Ann Dawson (with sidekick Suesan Way)
As you may recall, last Christmas I received an e-mail confirmation from my sister’s
family advising that they had contributed a flock of geese in my honor through
Heifer International’s program. As you may also recall, Heifer International, a
section 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1944, partners with ASUDEC,
the organization Grand Prix Region selected to be a recipient of its fund raising
efforts, to make a difference in the global community.
A few days ago, I received a gift catalog from Heifer International that suggests
numerous ways each of us can give a holiday gift that will last a lifetime and
bring some of our success into the lives of struggling, impoverished families the
world over. The catalog contains moving and inspiring endorsements from many
personalities, some of which are reflected below.
“Heifer has grown into such a force of healing, comfort and empowerment in its 60
plus years, that to miss out on a chance to participate would be my loss. This is
an ‘everybody wins’ concept, encompassing sustainability and absolute respect for
indigenous culture.”
— Diane Lane, actor and Heifer supporter
“With all the money donated to fight famine around the world, with all the
grandiose plans conceived to conquer poverty, sometimes all it takes to save a
child is a goat.”
— 60 Minutes, CBS News Magazine Program
“I support Heifer International because they are sending the sort of message
abroad that I can wholeheartedly support. I share their vision of a world without
hunger. It is a bold, brilliant vision — and it is attainable in our lifetime. Heifer is
working at it one family, one community at a time.”
— Susan Sarandon, actor, activist, Heifer supporter
“Today Heifer is recognized around the world for its effective approach to ending
poverty. Because of Heifer hundreds of thousands of families are able to feed their
children and give them a better future. Heifer provides much more than food. You
bring hope and triumph of the human spirit.”
— President Bill Clinton
“For 60 years, Heifer International has inspired hope in hungry communities, where
the gift of one animal can bring health, prosperity and peace.”
— President Jimmy Carter
“If I die, my family will weep for me. If my buffalo dies, my family will starve.”
— Thai farmer
Join GPX this holiday season to help ASUDEC and Heifer I
nternational extend
to the families of Burkina Faso a gift that keeps giving, a gift that is worth giving —
the gift of sustainability and self-reliance, life and health and hope. What gift could
be more meaningful? And remember, no contribution is too small.
The annual GPX holiday party on December 5th at Frisco’s Carhop Restaurant
and Grill will hold a silent auction with the proceeds going to ASUDEC – Africa’s
Sustainable Development Council in Burkina Faso. Please donate generously to the
auction and please attend the holiday party and support the auction and the club –
it is sure to be a fun evening for everyone.

Silent Auction Preview
November 09
We have a Silent Auction each year at our Holiday Party.
Members and other supporters donate items or services for the auction
Proceeds go to ASUDEC (Africa's Sustainable Development Council)
(read Norma Dawson's ASUDEC article on the adjacent page.)
Last year's Auction came on the heels of the economic downturn, so the Auction
didn't do real well (although we still raised about $2,500). There are some great
opportunities. Most of our advertisers contribute Gift Cerificates from their businesses.
Pacific Porsche donated an $850 Porsche Watch. We had an Airplane Ride, one of
Patricia Johnson's paintings of your Porsche, and more than fifty other items. Thanks
to Roy Lock and his posse, we also have a poster from this year's Monterey Historic's,
signed by a bunch of noted Porsche racers and others (see below) - which already has
two preliminary bids of $500
Use your imagination - anyone out there a gourmet cook? I'd bid on that one!!!

Breakfast Club Meeting Report — September 5
by Peter Ross, photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter
Our October Breakfast Club was another one of
those great Southern California Saturdays that
makes you very glad that you own that Porsche.
The Grand Prix Region was delighted to not only
give you a place to drive that Porsche to, but to
get a good breakfast, win a few door prizes, and
enjoy the morning with 80-90 other Porsche folk
also enjoying the morning.
Jim & Sean Beardsley
There was lots to talk about, upcoming tours
to Paso Robles and Santa Paula, the Holiday
Party and the expansion of our driving event
program for 2010. We have tentatively scheduled
a PCA DE Instructor Certification training. We're
working on final dates right now.
Bruce Brown, Roy Lock, Kristin Nes
Jim Lanaham, Bob Lewis & Steve S
GPX member Mike Takaki, who is also president
of the Porsche Owners Club, spoke about their
calendar of upcoming driving events.
All in all it was a wonderful day to be in Southern

Featured Advertiser:
GLOBAL MOTORSPORT GROUP (GMG)
By Marty Goldsmith
The automobile racing community has always maintained that many
improvements in your daily driver have originated with auto racing
technology. Fabryce Kutyba, co-owner of our advertiser, GMG, says that
is true for his business as well, where three-fourths of their business
is with cars driven on the street. But the other quarter, the race cars,
provide the technological energy for the business.
We asked Fabryce about their race program. They build
up and maintain racing cars, concentrating on Porsche.
While they have many clients in the various Porsche
racing series, their own focus is on the SCCA Pro
Speed World Challenge. They own and campaign one
car of their own and have two customer cars in their
team. James Sofronos, the other co-owner, drives the
company car.
These cars must meet the specifications of the
Challenge Series, which are designed to level the playing field between
the various marques participating. The Porsches originate
as GT3 Cup cars from the Porsche factory, but are
classified as GT5 for this series. While the engines are
"sealed" units from Porsche North America Motorsports
(conveniently across the street from GMG), suspensions,
aerodynamic parts, brakes, etc. are designed and, in many
cases, fabricated by GMG. They regard their unique tuning
capabilities as the key to their success.
The Challenge series visits ten tracks in the United States
and Canada, often operating as part of a composite racing
meeting. For example, the last race of this year was at
Laguna Seca as part of the ALMS event. There, Sofronos won his race,
handing the Manufacturers Championship to Porsche.
GMG anticipates continuing their racing program
for the next
season and
into the future.

1987). This book covers the entire gamut of motor racing,
and serves as a backdrop for all of Porsche’s achievements.
At 176 9x11 pages, this book approaches the coffee table
class, but it is not so big as to be unsuitable for bedtime
reading (it is sure to inspire some wonderful dreams).
Lavishly illustrated with contemporary black & whites of
the early cars, there are many color
photos of the more modern cars (and
of the ancient cars in their modern
form). Mercedes-Benz archive photos
may be familiar to many – they are
indeed classics.
Uniquely, the dust jacket is without
text. Title information is on a
removable strip, tucked into the
book so that the dust jacket shot of
a Team Lotus STP Type 56 Indy Car
can be framed as a marvelous 11x
20 inch picture.
The foreword by Sir Stirling Moss
really sets to tone for the book. In
it he says “ Every [motor racing car]
was an individual. Each had her own
beauty, her own personality, her
own idiosyncrasies, her own way of
behaving, her own way of letting
you understand her and form a
relationship with her.” For those of us
who will never have an opportunity
to drive such cars as the Lotus
79 - John Player Special Formula One car, and who have
watched many of these cars on TV and wondered what
they were really like, this book is the next best thing.
The title Ppge is a shot of the legendary Aston Martin
DBR1. Despite the fact that this reviewer bought his first
Porsche fifty years ago (gosh, can that really be?), and
has had at least two Porsches in his stable since 1964,
the DBR1 is one of his favorite race cars, followed in no
particular order by the Ford GT-40 (also included in the
book), Masaratti 250F (included), and the D-Jaguar (in
the great Ecurie Ecosse chapter). Favorites not included
20
are the Ferrari Testa Rosa
sports cars, and the Porsche
718 series, but the legends
of those cars were eclipsed
by those of the Ferrari 156
Formula One car and the
Porsche 917, both of which are included in the book.
Bruce Herrington
by Basem Wasef (published by Motorbooks)
As befits a book on Legendary Race cars, multiple forms
of motor sport are included – sports cars, F1 cars, Indy
cars, even dragsters
and NASCAR Plymouth
Superbirds, not to mention
Parnelli Jones’ “Big Oly”
Baja 500 off-road racer.
Vintages range from the
Thomas Flyer of 1908
(winner of the real Great
Race of 22,000 miles!) and
the 1911 Marmon Wasp,
winner of the very first
Indy 500 (starting from
28th position, based on
date of entry), to Walter
Roehrl’s Pikes Peak record
shattering 1987 BMW and
Michael Schumacher’s early
1990s Ferraris.
Focused on cars, there
is no dry tabulation of
racing successes, rather a
presentation of the cars’
character, as experienced
by the drivers, the
mechanics and team
managers, even legendary navigators, such as Denis
Jenkenson, whose famous ride with Stirling Moss in the
1955 Mille Miglia winning 300SLR, perhaps the best know/
described motor racing experience of all time.
Yes, the information in this book could be dismissed as old
news, but that’s the nature of Legends. For those with an
inclination for history, or a penchant for vicarious motor
racing in all its forms, this book is indeed a treasure trove.

Why Nitrogen?
By Marty Noonan
If you are one of the 85% of Americans who doesn't
regularly check tire pressure, you need nitrogen.
We take in nitrogen with every breath. Air is composed of:
• 1% Water Vapor and Other Gases –
Escapes up to 250 times faster than Nitrogen
• 21% Oxygen – Escapes 3-4 times faster than Nitrogen
• 78% Nitrogen –
The largest molecule in air, dry, non-flammable.
Because of their large size, nitrogen molecules are the
least permeable and stay in your tire longer. It's not about
the nitrogen. It's about reducing oxygen, water vapor and
other gases. By reducing the percentage of oxygen, water
vapor and other gases in your tires from 22% to 7% or
lower, your tires will maintain proper pressure longer than
if you use 'plain old air.' For example, with 95% nitrogen in
your tires, they retain optimal pressure three to four times
longer.
Proper tire pressure is a big deal. Maintain it with nitrogen,
and you'll see these three primary benefits:
• Increased Fuel Efficiency – Correct tire pressure keeps
the manufacturer's recommended “contact patch” on the road. This lessens the rolling resistance and maximizes fuel efficiency.
•Longer Tire Life – When it comes in contact with other materials, oxygen causes oxidation. Oxidation can make rubber brittle and cause it to lose tensile strength. In addition, at high temperatures and pressures, oxygen reacts and damages inner tire liners and belt packages; nitrogen does not.
•Increased Safety – Under-inflated tires cause 90% of blowouts. Nitrogen provides more reliable pressure for reduced blowout potential.
Other benefits:
•Improved TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Performance – If you have a new car, you likely are plagued by a flashing light telling you your tire pressure is low. For example, one woman's light was going off every four to five weeks. After inflating with nitrogen, her light didn't reappear for 53 weeks!
•More Predictable Pressure Fluctuation – NASCAR teams use nitrogen so they can more accurately predict tire pressure fluctuation. Regular compressed air can fluctuate considerably when water vapor is present.
•Longer Rim Life – Rim rust caused by condensation from water vapor and other gases can get caught
in valves and create slow leaks in tires. Nitrogen is completely dry, so it eliminates the potential for condensation.
22
Why not eliminate all oxygen and water vapor? Numerous
studies have proven that nitrogen in tires reduces the
volume of gases that escape more quickly and cause
damaging oxidation. However, research also has shown
that nitrogen purity beyond a certain point does not
provide additional benefits. In fact, with nitrogen purity
above 93.4% in passenger tires, oxygen actually begins to
migrate back into the tire. You can get all the benefits of
nitrogen with a purity level between 93-98%.
•Bridgestone/Firestone researchers say that 93-95% nitrogen is all you need.
•According to Ford Motor Co., there is no difference between 96% and 99% nitrogen purity.
Who Else Is Using Nitrogen?
•NASCAR - NASCAR teams use nitrogen because it allows them to more accurately predict tire pressure fluctuation. Nitrogen fluctuates with temperature change, but it does so less than when water vapor is present. In addition, higher nitrogen levels eliminate the explosive properties of oxygen (oxygen loses its explosive properties at around 9% or less) NASCAR
uses bottled nitrogen for portability. The bottles are delivered to the track by Praxair.
•Commercial Airlines – The FAA requires nitrogen in aircraft tires because it reduces the potential for water vapor freezing at high altitudes. In addition, airlines such as Boeing use nitrogen membranes or“OBIGGS” on-board inert gas generation systems to layer fuel tanks with inert nitrogen. Again, this
reduces the potential for explosions. Just imagine
if the Pinto had incorporated this technology 30 years ago, we'd still be driving them. Maybe…OK ~ Not!!
•U.S. Government – NASA and the U.S. military use nitrogen for many of the same reasons it used in commercial aircraft.
Food Processors and Packagers – Oxygen hastens both the
chemical breakdown and microbial spoilage of many foods.
Think meat, potato chips, cookies, etc. To help preserve
foods longer, processors and packagers often use modified
atmosphere packaging (MAP) and controlled atmosphere
packaging (CAP) that replaces some or all of the oxygen in
the air inside the package with nitrogen.
So why did I even bring this up? I had the Michelin Pilots
on my 2006 911 Club Coupe gyroscopically balanced and
nitrogen filled to extend tire wear, extend shock absorber
life, and improved gas mileage. I’ve used gyroscopic
balance and nitrogen in my Porsche tires for over 30 years
and have found all the above to hold true. Nate Jones of
Nate Jones Tire Company in Long Beach, CA introduced
me to nitrogen when I bought new tires for my 1969 911S
Targa back in the early 1970s.
Nitrogen, we breathe it and our tires need it!

Tech Notes from Tony Callas:
Modern Automotive Diagnostics
Automotive repair, like
many other professions,
has changed drastically
over the last 15 years.
It has gone from a
completely mechanical
hands-on diagnosis and
repair, to an almost hands-off research based
process.
Too many automotive repair facilities will erase
the fault code(s) — “just turn the warning light
off”, at the customer’s request. In almost all
situations, this is the wrong approach to a proper
overall repair. By turning off the warning light
(ie: erasing the fault codes), they are removing
the history — valuable data and detailed
information that can be utilized for properly
diagnosing the vehicle.
Fault codes should never be erased unless the
issue or fault is repaired.
From 1996 on, all vehicles sold in the USA
have what is known as OBD-II (On Board
Diagnostics II). OBD-II is the gatekeeper of the
engine management system, which oversees all
operating parameters that effect engine tailpipe
emissions (including monitoring the evaporative
emissions system - ie: fuel tank vapor
containment and processing). OBD-II constantly
monitors tailpipe emissions via the oxygen
(emissions) sensors in the exhaust stream.
If tailpipe emissions reach or exceed a
predetermined threshold, the low emission
standards are in jeopardy. If this happens, the
computer will set a fault code and illuminate the
check engine warning light (CEL).
Many other systems on the car also monitor their
own operation. Some examples are the MRS
(multiple restraint system — air bags), TPMS
(tire pressure monitoring sensors) etcetera. The
26
(courtesy of Callas Rennsport)
same diagnosis procedures need to be followed
regardless of the system in question.
Here is my approach to modern Porsche
diagnosis:
1.
2
3
4
5
6
Confirm the customer complaint(s)
and note down all issues. Then test drive vehicle if applicable.
Interrogate all control units with a factory
(preferred) diagnostic tool (eg: the Porsche PIWIS tester.
Print out the fault codes and relevant data.
Check the factory technical service bulletins for recommended repair possibilities or upgrades. This includes reprogramming, recoding and software upgrades, and is especially true on cars produced from 1996 on.
The computer data, factory information and the vehicle’s symptoms, plus the technician’s experience and training will provide the direction to the proper diagnosis.
Once the repair is performed, the process is not yet completed. Now the repair must be confirmed by utilizing the factory diagnostic tool so the technician can identify that the problem(s) are no longer present. Only at this point can it be considered that the repairs are completed.

DATED MATERIAL
©2009 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.
We do one thing well. We just happen to do it four ways.
Dreams take shape in many ways. Gut-wrenching power, cat-like response and next-generation technology
come standard in all of them. From the pure top-down roadster experience of the Boxster to the sports-car
agility of the Cayenne. Every Porsche is engineered with a no-compromise approach to performance.
Visit us today for four new ways to awaken your passion for driving.
Boxster, 911 Carrera, Cayman S, Cayenne.
