KIGELIA RUAHA / 3 NT
Kigelia Ruaha, named after the Kigelia Africana, or “Sausage” trees which
surround the camp, is a small 12-bed tented camp on the edge of the Ifuguru sand
river in Ruaha National Park.
The camp is very light and has minimal impact on the surroundings, but it is still
stylishly furnished with all the comforts. The sleeping tents have large beds and
en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and an ‘open to the sky' safari style bucket
shower. The larger “pavilion' style mess tent provides the living space for dining
and relaxing, with a bar and a well-stocked library.
This is an area that is usually full of game and it's not uncommon to find elephants
walking along the paths connecting the tents, or easily seen on the other side of
the dry riverbed.
Ruaha National Park is the largest National Park in East Africa, covering an area of
about 20,200 square kilometres. The park is known for its dramatic landscapes,
massive baobab trees and the Great Ruaha River. The area is a transition zone
where southern and eastern species of overlap, so there are a unique variety of
animals, birds and flora and fauna to be seen.
Full and half-day game drives are on offer from Kigelia Ruaha, also trips to the
nearby villages to see the work that they are doing with the local community.

DAY 1: THE AREA
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Ruaha National Park is the largest national park in East Africa, covering an area of
about 20,200 square kilometres in what's called "the southern circuit”. It's in the
middle of Tanzania and part of an extensive ecosystem which includes the
Rungwa Game Reserve, Usangu Game Reserve and other protected areas.
The great Ruaha River runs through the park, flowing along its south-eastern
margin; it's here where the game viewing is at its best with the river being the main
source of water at certain times of the year. The landscape is vast and wild with
hills dotted with baobabs, rocky escarpments and open savannah; it also has less
camps and lodges than most other parks, despite its size.
Ruaha is famous for its large population of elephant, with about 10,000 roaming in
the park, and this is believed to be the highest concentration of elephant in East
Africa . You can also see both the Greater and Lesser Kudu here, Sable and Roan
antelope, as well as other plains game like giraffe, zebras and eland. Other
animals in the park include lion, leopard, cheetah, bat-eared foxes and jackals and
you might see the endangered wild dog. Crocodiles inhabit the Ruaha and
Mzombe rivers, as well as a number of other reptiles.
It is a paradise for birders, with more than 571 species, some of them known to be
migrants from within as well as outside of Africa. Migrating species from Europe,
Asia, the Australian rim and Madagascar have been recorded in the park.

Life at Sand Rivers Selous is relaxed and while you're with us, we'll work with you
to plan your days as you go. This is an area we know and love, and it matters to us
that you get to see the best of it.
Sand Rivers Selous has just eight stone and thatched cottages, all are openfronted and raised on decks overlooking the river. There are five Riverside rooms with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful
showers - and three Hillside Suites. The Suites have all the above, but come with
a large living space and a small plunge pool. The main mess is spacious, openfronted and cool. There's a chill-out area near the library and then acres of dining
spots - around the main pool, privately tucked away in a quiet corner of the mess
or on the social "managers table". Sit around the bar at the end of the day, the
drinks are cold and there are always good stories to be told.
At Sand Rivers Selous, our open-sided 4x4 vehicles are a great way of seeing
things, for covering a bit of distance when that's what's needed. And of course
there are times when they give you the best views, access and photographic
opportunities. The same goes for our boats: just being on the river - never mind
the game - is a fantastic contrast to time spent in a vehicle. Drifting silently down
stream, gently spiraling in the current, watching the river banks unfold, is hard to
beat.

DAY 4: THE AREA
SELOUS GAME RESERVE
By air, the Northern Selous is defined by the Rufii River. A mile wide in places, its
courses are deeply carved in the soft sandy soil and visible for miles as you
approach by light aircraft. Any tracks here are beaten not by the small number of
visitors that come to stay, but by the feet of generations of hippos and elephant
whose influence has shaped the landscape, at least as much as the river.
And the scenery changes quickly, in a matter of a few miles miombo woodland home to hartebeest, zebra and herds of buffalo - gives way to wide grassy valleys,
strangely reminiscent of English park land; thick stands of doum palms reveal
glittering lakes burgeoning with life of all kinds.
And sand rivers, literally rivers of dry sand bleached white and littered with the
sculptural forms of dead leadwood trees, are one of the most alluring aspects of
this area. They are also a magnet to game, drawn to the fresh water that flows
beneath the surface.
This area is home to all the major mammal species - lion, leopard, elephant,
buffalo and even the very illusive black rhino.
