How to Search the TNRD Library System Evergreen Catalogue
How to Search the TNRD Library Catalogue
There are two ways to get started with your catalogue search. One way is to first
log into your online TNRD Library account so you can more easily place holds on
books as you search the catalogue. The other way is to simply proceed with your
catalogue search without logging into your account. If you don’t require logging in
for your catalogue search then please proceed to page 2.
Logging into Account and then Searching:
1) On the TNRD Library System homepage (www.tnrdlib.ca) click on My
Account located in the very upper right corner of the page.
2) You will be directed to the My Account page. Here you will type in your
Username (library card #) and Password in the correct fields and then click
Sign In. (The first time you sign in you will use your temporary password that
can be obtained from a TNRD Library System circulation assistant. Once you
sign in using that password you will be able to change it to whatever
password you’d like.)
3) Once you are logged in you will be directed to an overview of your account.
Here you can view your Holds, On Loan, and Fines summaries, as well as
what contact information you have saved within the TNRD Library System. To
begin your catalogue search click on Search the Catalogue located in the top
right corner of the page.
Searching the Catalogue without Logging into your Account:
1) At the TNRD Library System homepage (www.tnrdlib.ca) you can begin your
catalogue search by first typing your search inquiry in the Catalogue search
bar and then clicking Go.
Now the instructions will be the same for whether you are logged into
your account or not. (There will, however, be some steps that discuss
placing holds which requires you to be logged in. You can log into your
account at any time during your Catalogue search by clicking on My
Account that is always located in the top right corner of the screen).
1) If you typed in your search inquiry beforehand a list will already be provided
here but if you began your search through your Account page then you will
begin by typing in your search inquiry and then clicking Go.
2) You can format your search by clicking on the down arrow next to the heading
All Fields. Within the provided drop down list click on whichever setting you
feel will work best for your search inquiry: Title, Author, Subject, Series, or
ISBN.
3) You can also choose what format you want to search for by clicking on the
down arrow next to the heading All Formats. Within the provided drop down
list click on whichever format you are searching for: Audiobook, Book,
Software/Games, Kit, Large Print, Magazine, Music, Video Recording, etc.
4) You will then be provided with the results page.
Note that beside each search result there is an indication of what format that
result is available in. For example, the first two results of the search inquiry
“The Help” show a Video Recording format and a Book format. (Formats will
vary depending on if you decided to perform a set format search.)
You can
also note (if
available)
the rating,
publication
year, and
author of the
title.
You can see right
away how many
copies of that
particular material
the TNRD library
system has by
viewing the number
beside the word
Copies.
As well, you can
view how many
copies are currently
available by viewing
the number beside
the word Available.
Underneath the search bar at the top of the search results page you will see
that there is a listed number of how many results your search inquiry has
triggered. You can move on to the next page of results by either clicking on
Next or by clicking on the desired page number. If you want to go back to the
last page you were on you can click on the page number or Prev. (The search
engine will list the search results in order of which ones are most relevant to
your search inquiry, so the first few pages should have the most desired
results.)
You can change how many results appear on one results page by clicking on
the drop down list next to the word Show. You can choose to have 10, 20, 30,
or 50 search results show per page.
If you scroll down the search results page you will also see on the left-hand
side a few more options to narrow down your search.
You can click on any of the publication dates
that have matched the search results to
narrow your search down by publication year.
You can click on any type of format that you’d
like to view the material results in.
And you can click on a subject/topic that matches
the search results.
*These searching techniques are not necessary to proceed with your search
but they can help you narrow down your search inquiry even further if desired.
5) A very important step to keep in mind is viewing which TNRD Library branch
has the material you are looking for. To do so you can click on the drop down
arrow beside the word All Branches located underneath each search result.
This will show you a list of which TNRD Library branches own that particular
item. *Note that the Downtown Kamloops library is simply specified as
Kamloops Library. However, just because the list may show a branch owning
that material doesn’t necessarily mean they have it available at that moment.
To clarify if they have it available you will need to click on the branch name.
Notice that after selecting the North Kamloops Library the number beside
Copies and Available has changed to match that branch’s current copy
number and availability status. If it says 0 beside Available then you will
either need to place a hold on it (holds will be explained later on) or you can
choose to see what other branches closer to you have available.
Another way to narrow down your search to only show material from a
particular TNRD library is to click on the name of the branch listed underneath
the heading Branches on the left side of the page. This will adjust the results
to only show material that is owned by that specified branch.
6) To view more information about a material on the search results page, click
on the title of it.
You will be directed to the catalogue page for that specific title. Here you can
view the physical and publishing details, the edition, series, links, notes, and
summary of the title. The number of TNRD copies owned and ones that are
currently available are listed on the right side of the page along with topics
and places that correspond to the title.
Scrolling down further you will see a list of all of the TNRD library branches
that own that title and whether their copies are currently available or not.
7) Placing Holds on Material: You will need to be logged into your account to
proceed with this step. If you are not logged in you will be prompted to after
clicking the Place Hold option.
There are two different locations from where one can place a hold on
material.
First location: On the search results page next to the title on the right side
there is a Place Hold button that you can click.
Second Location: After clicking on a title found on the search results page
you will see the Place Hold button on the right side of title’s summary.
Click on the Place Hold button in either of these locations to begin the hold
placing process.
You will then be directed to the Place Hold page. Here you can make sure
that all of your hold options are accurate before placing the hold. Make sure
that you have correctly specified which TNRD Library branch you’d like to pick
up the hold at by clicking on the right branch in the drop down list beside the
heading Pickup Branch. You can also choose to be notified by either phone,
e-mail, or both by clicking the small boxes beside those options. (There will
be a green check mark in the small box if that’s the notification option you
want turned on.)
Choose when you’d like your hold to be active (when you want it to be placed)
by clicking the circles beside either Now, A date in the future, or Suspend
the hold until I decide later what to do with it. These options are useful if
you have a lot of material on the go already and don’t want your hold to come
in until you are finished with what you already have out.
Lastly, choose whether you want your hold to expire. This would mean that if
you only want to wait for the hold to come in for a certain period of time (some
holds can take a long time to come in if the material is popular so one may
end up wanting to purchase it instead of waiting) you can have a date set
where the hold will expire and no longer appear on your account. If you don’t
want your hold to expire make sure you click the circle beside Never.
To activate the hold expiry date option you will you will have to click on the
circle beside A date in the future, then click in the white box that appears to
the right and choose the month and day that you would like your hold to
expire.
When you are finished reviewing/adjusting your hold specifications click on
Place Hold at the bottom right corner of the page.
A hold completion page will appear showing you that you have successfully
placed a hold on that material. You will also be shown what number you are
in the hold queue. This completes the hold process. To go back to the
catalogue search page from here you can click on Back to Search or you can
click on View Holds to view more details on your currently placed holds.
