LONDON’S ONLY OPERATIC RECITAL SERIES
R E C I TA L O N E
INTRODUCTION
Celebrating ten years since his first Rosenblatt Recital, the
brilliant Juan Diego Flórez returns to open the second half
of our 2010/11 season with a virtuoso recital at Southbank
Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Now established as the bel
canto tenor of choice for the world’s leading opera houses,
we’re delighted to be working with him again.
THURSDAY 20 TH JANUARY 2011, 7.30 PM
ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL, SOUTHBANK CENTRE
Born in Lima, Peru, Juan Diego Flórez is the world’s
leading exponent of the bel canto operas of Rossini,
Donizetti and Bellini, and has a repertoire of some
thirty-two operas. He studied at Peru’s National
Conservatory of Music and the prestigious Curtis
Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
In April we welcome the 2009 winner of the inaugural
Voice of Black Opera Competition, the superb British
soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn who, after 10 years rest from
singing, returned in October to critical acclaim in her
English National Opera debut as Mimì in Puccini’s
La Bohème.
He made his professional debut in 1996 at the
Rossini Festival in Pesaro in Matilde di Shabran
and in 1999 debuted at La Scala, Milan, the
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the
Vienna State Opera and at the New York
Metropolitan Opera in 2002. Since then, he has
appeared to worldwide acclaim in opera houses,
concert halls and music festivals throughout Europe,
North and South America, working with the world’s
leading conductors.
Italian mezzo-soprano Serena Malfi will give her debut
London recital in May, while in June, South African bass
Vuyani Mlinde, former member of the Jette Parker Young
Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, will bring the
curtain down on the season.
