It's been a half century since we set out on a journey along roads we
knew not where they would lead. Along that odyssey, we have come across
many divergent paths, some dead ends and some that seemed to stretch for
miles with wide, beautiful vistas.
A writer for the 1958 Flame waxed poetic and prophetic when she wrote,
".[S]eniors follow a road of broad interests, tree-shaded in summer, through sunshine
and shadow; snow-banked in winter, rut-bound and ice-crusted. The pathway is broad,
curving on to the future." The roads, of course, are a metaphor for hopes, dreams and
ambition.
Following those personal pathways has brought us to milestone 50, where we have an
opportunity to re-establish old ties and relationships and perhaps to evoke a little
nostalgia. It's also a great time to review what we have accomplished.
If we take stock of ourselves, we now know full well who we are: We are competent,
productive, efficient, persistent, open-minded, generous, independent, energetic, active,
motivated, self-assured, enthusiastic and committed to our goals.
Today we are facing another fork in the road. Will we follow that well-worn path to a
rocking chair to await, what Dillon Thomas called, the dying of the late? Or will we
take the less traveled route where we can remain productive and pass on our wisdom,
energy and experience to others?
Shall we sit and wait for the grim reaper? I think not. There are more roads to explore,
promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep.

A Short History of Rock & Roll
The decade of the Fifties gave birth to Rock and Roll. That's us folks!
When Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock became popular in 1955, the nation learned to swing to a
whole new sound.
But, Rock wasn't the only music of the Fifties. Other artists with other songs had folks hummin' for
much of the decade. Pat Boone, Perry Como and Patty Page......just to mention a few.
The feel-good innocence of the Fifties music reflects on the post World War II optimism in
America. The young people of the time, an emerging force called teenagers, hadn't struggled
through the war years, although some may remember the end. They were looking for something
more exciting. They discovered that vitality in Rock and Roll.
During the Fifties, both styles of music co-existed quite nicely.
Some of the music you associate with the Fifties was actually recorded in the Sixties. Blue Moon,
by the Marcel's, for example. And all of the "girl groups" are from the 60's.
When you look at the dates, the styles tend to break off mid-decade. The tunes from 55-64 are
pretty much alike. Things didn't change much until the British music invasion of the U.S., and the
U.S. military invasion of Viet Nam.
