April 2014
Dear friends and prayer partners,
On April 19, 2004, God guided 19 people, representing four supporting churches, to
come alongside Debbie and me in prayer. We met at Northwood Baptist Church to
consider the feasibility of opening a full service hospital in Guinea, West Africa. We
prayed for God’s will to be shown. Was He directing this dream? Guinea is a very needy
nation both spiritually and physically — this work could not move beyond the dream
without the answer to that question.
Prior to this time of prayer, Debbie and I served for 17 years in Cote d’Ivoire (CDI) at
the Baptist Mission Hospital and helped to establish a small church there. We served in
the Sunday school, music and teaching ministries and were blessed to be part of what
God did in that faithful group of believers and through the Association of Conservative Baptist Churches of CDI.
It was during the final years of our time in CDI that God opened our eyes to to the needs of Guinea. In 1999 we
took a trip as a family into that area of West Africa where we saw firsthand the desperate need for good medical
care and the gospel message for the people of Guinea. During that trip we experienced spiritual warfare but this
did not stop the dream from growing in our hearts for this new work.
As this group of 19 believers prayed with us in April 2004, they believed it was God’s will to move ahead with the
dream God planted in our heart. Our prayer time together on that day included commissioning to take another
exploratory trip to consult missionaries and nationals in Guinea about the potential and desirability of building a
mission hospital there. We also considered areas of land where a hospital could be built.
In October 2004 the group of 19 prayer partners grew in number and came together to affirm the launching of
the work we now know as Compassion Evangelical
Hospital. This faithful group of believers formed the
foundation of prayer and support that helped us form
an administrative team in the USA and a hospital in
Guinea which “gives the best quality medical and
surgical care possible, according to the means
God provides, with compassion, and shares the
gospel of Christ with everyone who comes.”
What a privilege it has been for all of us to partner with God in this work for His glory!
Fear of Ebola Virus in Guinea
An Ebola outbreak began in January.
A viral caused hemorrhagic fever
probably first contracted from eating
bush meat, (bats, monkey and antelope) has been spreading by direct
contact with body fluids of infected
patients or their dead bodies. 167
cases have been reported as of April
17 with 122 having died in six counties mostly in the southeast forested
area of Guinea. Most of these are at
least 200 miles from CEH. Several
surrounding nations such as Sierra
Leone, Liberia, and Mali are also
reporting some cases. This is the first
such epidemic in West Africa. World
Health organization and Doctors
Without Borders are taking steps
to quarantine and give supportive
treatments to all suspected cases
since there are neither effective
curative medications nor vaccines.
The early symptoms are similar to
many very common diseases with
high fever, body aches, nausea and
vomiting and diarrhea and then later
hemorrhaging and major organ failure.
Many Guineans are very frightened.
Transportation limitations for symptomatic persons, food restrictions
from eating bush meat, limitation of
transporting corpses back to their
village of origin for burial have been
imposed. Only one potential case presented to our hospital thus far. Pray
with us for wisdom as we prepare
compassionate care for any others
who might come and for protection
of our staff.
In our time, this is what God has done

For His glory, God will have victory over the opposition of Satan. Please pray with
us for those who are serving faithfully to present the gospel message and give
compassionate medical care in West Africa through CEH.
Health issues
Job’s mother was hospitalized in a
coma for three months at Ferke in
CDI, 600 miles from CEH. Job went
to care for her for two months but
there was no improvement. She is a
believer and heaven welcomed her
home on April 21, 2014. Pray for his
comfort.
Etienne’s father had symptoms
consistent with a DVT and then a
pulmonary embolus. He was hospitalized at Ferke, as well, and then
evacuated 400 miles to Abidjan for a
venous Doppler and a CT scan, and
then anticoagulation therapy; none
of which Ferke could handle.
For me, we have a nuclear family
health issue we have been working through over the past two years.
Also, my parents’ health is declining. Mom was hospitalized twice
in the past six months. During the
hard winter months we brought them
closer to us and this was a blessing.
Now that spring has arrived, they

A challenge to unity
A work inspector in Mamou repeatedly brought up issues which
seemed intent on disrupting the CEH
ministry. Last year a key employee
was recruited to work for another
NGO. The inspector inserted himself in the negotiations to make it as
