FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Dear Friends in Christ:
On this first Sunday of Advent Jesus urges His disciples to stay awake and prepare
themselves for the Lord’s coming. Good stewards prepare themselves and await Christ’s judgment
in joyous expectation. This kind of attitude requires genuine spiritual maturity, the kind that is
cultivated by prayer, participation in the sacraments, loving attention to family and one’s communion
of faith, and love for one’s neighbor. Are we prepared for the Lord’s second coming? Are we ready
to receive Christ? Are we ready to look joyously for Christ’s judgment?
The season of Advent confronts us with the preciousness and fragility of time. In the
disturbing images Jesus uses in today's Gospel, we realize how little control we have over time, how
unpredictable and fleeting are the number of days we are given. Yet, rather than discourage or
depress us, understanding the Advent that is our lives should inspire to make sure our days however few - have a "point," that we make of these lives of ours something good, something with
purpose and meaning, something that we can return to God who gives us life in the first
place. Advent reminds us that the joy of life is not the length of our days yet their "point," how we
realize the joy of Emmanuel in our midst, how we give and experience the love of God in every
moment and season. In Christ’s Peace, Fr. Dave
WYD | Stateside is a 26 hour overnight vigil for groups of high school youth and young adults from the Mid
-Atlantic area. Our Diocesan celebration will take place in Lancaster, PA on July 30 & 31, 2016 at Lancaster
Catholic High School and Clipper Magazine Stadium. The cost, time and distance of traveling to an
international World Youth Day can be prohibitive, that is why we present this overnight vigil in the Diocese
of Harrisburg and invite the young people of our region.
Those attending will experience a series of events similar to those that will occur in Krakow- a pilgrimage
walk, Stations of the Cross, opportunities for Confession and Adoration, Mass, concerts, catechesis, an
outdoor overnight candlelit vigil and more. Jackie Francois will be our Emcee & Headliner; Special Guests
include Ceili Rain and Sean Patrick Malloy and more to be announced soon!
Registration is now open! For details visit: www.hbgdiocese.org/wydstateside Register by December 31,
2015 for the early bird discount.
Thank you to everyone who gave so generously of their food and time. We emptied at least 270
bags of food on Truck Sunday. On Monday, after filling our food bank and the basement shelves,
the Council of Churches came and collected 2,319 pounds of food! God is Good! Many blessings
to this wonderful and generous parish.

Diabetes
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of
disability and death in the United States. 1 in 11 Americans have
diabetes which equates to more than 29 million people. Another 86
million adults are considered at high risk of developing type 2
diabetes. This disease can cause blindness, kidney disease, nerve
damage and other health problem if not kept under control and
properly managed. The good news for people at high risk of
developing type 2 diabetes is that they can lower this risk in half
with some healthy changes in diet and life style.
Just what is diabetes? It is a disease where the blood glucose levels
are above normal. With most of the food we eat, the food turns into
glucose, or sugar for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas
which is an organ near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin
that helps our body get the glucose into the cells of our bodies. If
you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or
it isn’t able to use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes the
sugar to build up in your blood stream.
There are several types of diabetes. Type 1 which was previously
called insulin dependent diabetes or juvenile –onset diabetes. This
accounts for approximately 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.
Type 2 is the second group. This was previously called non-insulindependent diabetes. Or adult onset. This group accounts for
approximately 90 to 95% of all diagnosed cases. Thirdly is
gestational diabetes which occurs only in pregnant women. If not
treated, it can cause problems for both mom and baby. This
condition develops in about 2 to 10% of all pregnancies. There are
other specific types of diabetes that can be a result of genetic
syndromes, drugs, malnutrition, infection or other illness. These
account for about 1 to 5% of cases.
People who think they may have diabetes should see their care
provider for diagnosis. Here are some symptoms that you may or
may not experience. These symptoms include: frequent urination,
excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, extreme hunger, sudden
vision changes, tingling or numbness in hands or feet, feeling very
tired at times, very dry skin, sores that are slow to heal, frequent
infections.
As a general rule, it is wise to get regular checkups including blood
pressure check, cholesterol check and ask your doctor about being
checked for Diabetes risk.
