Sonny Skinner, PGA Life Member from Sylvester, claimed his second Georgia
PGA Player of the Year title presented by PGA National Resort and Spa and
the highly coveted Billy Weir Trophy after a long stretch of outstanding play
in 2014. Skinner previously won the Georgia PGA Player of the Year title in
2006.
Skinner has become one of the most decorated
playing professionals in all of the PGA of America.
He has earned four consecutive PGA of America
Senior Player of the Year Awards, and was named
the PGA of America Player of the Year in 2008. He is the only person in the
history of the association to capture both the regular and Senior Player of
the Year awards.
Skinner’s steady year began in March with a 3rd place finish at the inaugural
Rivermont Championship which was conducted at Rivermont Golf & Country Club in Johns Creek. In May, Skinner lost in a playoff to Kyle Owen at
the Chicopee Woods Players’ Championship to finish in second place. His
solid play continued throughout the warm summer where he never finished
outside of the top-35 in a player of the year point event.
In June, the fifty four-year old tied for seventh place at the Yamaha Atlanta
Open presented by Bolle/Bushnell at Atlanta National Golf Club.
In July, Skinner finished tied for 24th place at the The Championship at
Berkeley Hills Country Club presented by pennywisely.
In August, Skinner finished in a tie for 25th place at the Tilted Kilt Georgia
Open at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw. Later in the month, Skinner
finished in tied for 9th place at the E-Z-GO/Path2College Georgia PGA
Championship presented by TaylorMade, adidas, Ashworth and the PGA
Tour at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.
Skinner finished the 2014 season with a tie for 3rd place at the Georgia Professional Championship in late September at The Legends Golf Club at Chateau Elan.
By claiming the 2014 Georgia PGA Player of the Year title and the Billy Weir
Trophy, Skinner will receive an exemption into the PGA Tour’s McGladrey
Classic, which will be, conducted this week at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside
Course.

The 2014 Georgia PGA Foundation Gala is set for the
evening of Friday, November 7, 2014 at Cherokee Town Club
in Atlanta. Please consider being part of this Gala and supporting your Georgia PGA Foundation. By supporting the Gala
you will help your Foundation expand the reach of junior golf

We are offering a special ticket rate to all PGA members.
You may purchase four tickets for the Gala at the PGA Member rate of just $75 per person (non-member price $250 per

greater support. A table consists of 8 tickets and all of the

email [email protected].
Once again, we will also host a charity auction in conjunction
with the Gala that will be available online and culminate at the
event in November. We are asking professionals to contribute
by offering their services in the form on Foursomes for the
Foundation and Coaching for Charity. Please visit
OneSpareTeeTime.com for Charity to donate a foursome(s) and OneSpareLesson.com for Charity to donate
a lesson package.
We are excited to continue with this new tradition and encourage all members to share in this important opportunity to
grow our Foundation. If you have any questions, please contact Kirk Pagenkopf at (770) 530-7845 or email [email protected].
About Match Play Golf Flashcard Games
Match Play Golf (two games) consists of a set of handmade,
laminated cards that contain a cover card, an instruction card
and 10 double illustrated golf images with basic terms for a
total of 22 cards. Once children learn the images and corresponding terms, the cards are placed face down on a surface
and jumbled randomly. Two cards are selected with the challenge to find the matching image in a fun and non-competitive
manner. The goal of the game is to introduce a fun way to
assist with development of reading skills, image pattern recognition, motor skill control and memory. Variations of the game
are explained based on ability level.

Rules Ghouls
Just in time for Halloween, this article features some of the “ghosts” of Rules past. If you are interested in exploring the history of
the Rules of Golf, you can do so by visiting www.ruleshistory.com where you can view the many and varied versions of the
Rules dating as far back as 1744. You can also pick a topic, such as teeing ground, to see the evolution of the wording over the
years pertaining to that topic. A word of caution: our golfing ancestors utilized a slightly different vocabulary, e.g., “fog” refers to a
type of grass, and “break club” was something that might get in the way of your swing and cause your club to break.
• You must tee your ball within a club's length of the hole. (1744)
• In order to preserve the holes, no golfer or caddie shall be allowed to make any tee within ten yards of the hole, and no ball shall
be teed nearer the hole than two club lengths, nor farther from it than four. (1773)
• If a ball shall be so played as to stick fast to the ground, the said ball shall be loosened by the opposite party to the owner of the
ball so fastened. (1773)
• No golfer shall under any pretense whatever give any old balls to the caddies; if they do, they shall for every such ball given away
forfeit sixpence to the Treasurer. (1773)
• When the hole is distinctly in view of the player, no person shall be allowed to stand at it for direction. (1783)
• That the party to play may remove stones or other break clubs when he is to play with a timber club; but if he is to play with an
iron club, no encumbrances are to be removed, except only in the case of putting, when the party to play shall have liberty to use
what club he chooses and remove encumbrances. (1786)
• In all cases where a ball is to be dropped, the party dropping shall front the hole to which he is playing, and drop the ball behind
him over his head. (1809)
• When a ball is completely covered with fog, bent, whins, etc., so much thereof shall be
set aside as that the player shall have a full view of his ball before he plays. (1809)
• When a ball lies in sand, mud, or amongst rubbish, no obstruction shall be removed; but
in cases where the ball is so placed, that the player finds he cannot play it, it shall be in the
power of his adversary to play it. He failing or refusing to do so, the player may lift his ball,
play from behind the hazard, losing a stroke. (1828)
• All loose impediments of whatever kind may be removed on the putting green, which is
considered not to exceed 20 yards from the hole. (1829)
Fog, bent & whins at St. Andrews
• If a ball is lost, the player shall drop another behind the place where it was lost and lose one stroke. (1830)
• A ball stuck fast in wet ground or sand may be taken out and replaced loosely in the hole it has made. (1858)
• If a ball split into separate pieces, another ball may be put down where the largest portion lies, or if two pieces are apparently of
equal size, it may be put where either piece lies, at the option of the player. (1902)
• Any loose impediment lying within a club length of the ball and not being in or touching a hazard, may be removed without penalty; if the ball move after any such loose impediment has been touched by the player, his partner, or either of their caddies, the
player shall be deemed to have caused the ball to move and the penalty shall be one stroke. A loose impediment lying more than a
club length from the ball may not be moved under penalty of the loss of the hole, unless the loose impediment lie on the putting
green. (1925)
