The National Board of Directors and Staff extend to our Donors, Families and Friends a very Healthy and Happy Shana Tova - 5770 Let us pray for peace in our beloved Israel - Am Y'Israel Chai RO SH HASHANA / FALL 2009 / 5770 • NATIONAL EDITION Ceremony for the dedication of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit in the Neve Shaanan Stadium in Haifa, during the Maccabiah Games Holiday greetings from Norton Segal Q.C. National President As I reflect on the past year, I am very proud to have served for the past 3 years as National President for this invaluable organization. Our chapters all across Canada have been working diligently to raise the necessary funds to ensure that Israeli citizens have the best emergency equipment. Israel relies heavily on the support of the Diaspora and as Canadians we can be proud that we have been able to provide support in times of crisis. As the holiday of Rosh Hashanah approaches, it is a time when we make our commitments and set new goals for the upcoming year. It is my hope that this year Canadian Magen David Adom for Israel will be able to increase the amount of ambulances, scooters, and medical supplies that Israel relies on. Your support is greatly appreciated and we know we can continue to count on your generosity. On behalf of the National Board of Directors, I wish you and your families a healthy, prosperous and Sweet New Year. L’Shana Tova Norton Segal Q.C, National President ISRAEL - Mr. Lewis Rose and his children, Bradley, Samantha and Ashley, from Toronto, Canada, donated a Mobile Intensive Care Unit through the Friends of MDA in Canada. The MICU is in the MDA station in Nahariya, and up until now has been called upon to treat about 2,500 patients and wounded. The donors chose to have the dedication ceremony in the Football Stadium in Neve Shaanan, Haifa, during the Maccabiah Games. Bradley, the oldest son, is on the Canadian Football (soccer) team at the Maccabiah, as well as his sister Samantha, who is on the Canadian Women's Football (soccer) team. Before the ceremony we watched an enthralling football game, with a lot of goals, between the Canadian and Swiss teams. Bradley kicked the winning goal a few minutes before the end of the game, ensuring a 3-2 victory for the Canadian team. L-R: Lewis Rose, Itai Davidi, Bradley Rose and Ashley Rose. Shimon Biton – the Director of the Carmel Region, Erez Geller – Paramedic in charge of the Carmel Region and Itai Davidi – a long serving Paramedic from the Asher Region, and an ambulance team from the Carmel Region, standing on call at the Games, all celebrated with members of the family. The family’s rejoicing and that of the MDA personnel who in this instance supported the Canadian team was a double one. We were privileged to get to know and to appreciate and rejoice with this warm and generous family who are actively carrying out the Zionist spirit, the Maccabiah spirit and the spirit of volunteering shown by MDA in Israel and abroad. Calgary Friends show appreciation On May 5, 2009, Calgary Friends presented a Certificate of Recognition to William Katz for his personal commitment and efforts on behalf of MDA. (L – R) Mrs. Nava Wainer, Vice-President and Founding Member, makes presentation to William Katz, an "Unsung Hero" and MDA volunteer, who described his "real life experience" on the front line of MDA life-saving activities in Israel. 1 CMDA_Rosh_hashana_2009:Layout 1 13/08/09 4:10 PM Page 2 YOUR CMDA FOR ISRAEL PLEASE CONTACT US to make a donation, to purchase equipment or to volunteer. Within this framework, El Al is pleased to give its passengers a present of membership in the Frequent Flyers Club and membership points.” MDA Director General, Eli Bin, praised the joint venture: “In this joint venture, El Al has proven that even a commercial company can have a high level of social awareness donating to the community in an important subject – encouragement of blood donations during the summer holiday period when there is usually a drastic decline in blood donations. I appeal to all the public to take part in the joint national effort to keep blood supplies at a reasonable level.” El Al and MDA are today starting a joint project, during which every blood donor will be entitled to free membership in the El Al Frequent Flyers Club and to a gift of 20 points. Donors who are already members of the club with be entitled to a gift of 20 points in their account. Gospel Road Mother's Day with the Israeli 911 Service Larry Heather, host of radio talk show Gospel Road, 1140 on the AM dial, High River, Alberta was present at the special fund raising event put on by Calgary Friends of MDA, on May 5th, 2009 at Calgary’s Beth Tzedec Synagogue. Dr. Samuel Weiss, Director of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and a recipient of the prestigious Gairdner Foundation Award amongst many others. was the guest lecturer at this event, speaking on Neural Stem Cell research and recent scientific developments in that field. He received a standing ovation for his exceptionally stimulating and intellectually edifying lecture. This was Heather’s second radio talk show focusing on the humanitarian efforts of MDA in Israel, featuring interviews with Arnold Rosner, Sam Wainer, William Katz and his mother, Deborah. Mr. Heather’s particular interest lay in Calgary Friends’ latest campaign for the purchase of unique ambulance equipment – a sophisticated mobile infant incubator-ventilator-transport bed. In the course of Mr. Heather’s interview with Arnold Rosner on the program, Mr. Rosner noted that MDA ambulances until now had to borrow a local hospital incubator, depriving the pre-natal unit therein of one of its precious machines in order to transport a much higher risk infant. This process would require co-ordination and additional re-jigging of the MICU Ambulance. The new system is designed to be inserted into the interior of the ambulance with ease, thus saving precious minutes and increasing the utility, flexibility and capability to provide additional life-saving services. William Katz and his mother, Deborah, recalled William’s experiences as a student MDA volunteer while serving on board the ambulances and at MDA stations, particularly during the 2006 war with Lebanon. Mrs. Katz was invited to the program because it was broadcast on Mother’s Day and she could present a mother’s perspective about her son’s experiences. Sam Wainer, Co-President of Calgary Friends, was present to speak about Calgary Friends of MDA and to respond to questions about the current Incubator Campaign. We wish to thank Larry Heather for helping to educate his listeners about MDA Israel’s essential life-saving activities and we hope that he will join Nava & Sam Wainer, CoChairs of Calgary Friends’ May 5th Campaign. CMDA National Executive Director Arnold Rosner us for future Calgary Friends’ events. Especially large kudos go out to the Calgary Friends of MDA Board Members for their on-going efforts in organizing the 2009 Calgary Emergency Incubator Campaign as well as previous campaigns. It is because of their dedication and commitment that the campaign results were successful. Yishar Ko’ach! A great Event As of March this year, Winnipeg has its very own CMDA chapter, and the group has wasted no time – putting on its first major event on Aug 24, kicking things off on a high note and signalling more quality programming to come. The Aug event is a screening of the film, “The Original Promise,” that paints a picture of the real Israel (i.e. not just CNN sound bites). The documentary includes interviews with the average Israelis and Canadians on the streets, and includes the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of modern Israeli society. Following the movie screening is a panel discussion with David Matas, Dr. James Christie, and Erez Rotem, emceed by 92.2 Kick-FM’s host of The Great Canadian Talk Show, Marty Gold. Event co-sponsors are B'nai Brith Canada and Manitoba-Israel Shared Values Round Table. Upcoming local CMDA events, following The Original Promise film and discussion include speaking events, school presentations, blood donation clinics, firstaid training, craft workshops, and more. To keep in the know about CMDA-Winnipeg, join the Facebook group Canadian Magen David Adom – Winnipeg. Along with his female team mate, 25year old Aliyah Snyder, they both hurl themselves head-first down the mountain at speeds reaching over 120 km/hr and forces up to 5Gs, on long-shot hopes of qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. They took a major step forward by representing Israel at this spring's America's Cup competition in Lake Placid, NY - which was the first time Israel ever competed internationally in this sport. With his father and brother both in the field of medicine, Omri is a big supporter of MDA, and grew up with an MDA pushka in his room in which he'd make tzedakah of loose change. Vancouver and Calgary MDA chapters, both being Winter Olympic cities, are considering a possible event celebrating Omri's passion for MDA and his Olympic dreams... stay tuned for more info! Vancouver MDA Chapter Reveals ‘How Hebrew Became Talk’ Ever been on BenYehuda street in Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem? People in Vancouver got to meet the grandson of that very same BenYehuda! On May 21st, a record turnout of over 450 people attended an incredible multimedia presentation at Congregation Beth Israel that featured a keynote address by Rabbi Dr. Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, grandson of the man (with the same name) responsible for the revival of modern Hebrew from "loshen kodesh" reserved only for scripture, commentary, and prayer, to what is commonly spoken today. The idea for the evening was conceived by Myer Grinshpan, who normally serves as Publicity Co-ordinator for our chapter, but took on the role of Event Chair to make his idea a reality. This was our chapter's bestattended and most multicultural event, featuring many Christian friends of Israel who came to hear our guest explain his grandfather's "Fulfillment of Prophecy" of "One language, one nation, in our homeland ("am echad, safah echad, be-artzeynu"). Our audience also included a contingent of First Nations Peoples from British Columbia, captivated in the final part of the evening by Ben Yehuda's message of hope for all aboriginals seeking to revive their own traditional languages, by using the modern-day real example of his grandfather's vision, tenacity, and leadership to turn their hopes into reality. After his keynote multimedia address, our esteemed guest held an autograph session of his latest book called “Fulfillment of Prophesy: The Life story of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda 1858-1922", and donated a portion of the book sales revenue to Magen David Adom. Rabbi Dr. Eli Ben-Yehuda is a dynamic, professional speaker on a number of topics and is fluent in Hebrew, English, French, Yiddish, and Arabic. He actually went to university in Montreal and therefore has a Canadian connection. Our experience is that he brings a very diverse crowd together under one roof to hear him speak because his family story is fascinating on many different levels. If you're interested in helping to bring him to your city, contact your local MDA chapter or for more information e-mail [email protected].
