VOGUE PROCLAIMS BAMBOO TREND Thanks to Al Gore,
2007 will make history as the year of sustainability. Seeking to highlight the consequences of man-made climate change, Nobel Laureate
Al Gore’s highly praised documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, won
two Oscars and put climate change to the top of world media and
political agendas. Global warming is a hot topic in the fashion industry too, brought about not least by the development of the bamboo
bra. Made from natural materials, the bamboo bra is extremely soft,
breathable and comfortable, and boasts antibacterial and moisturewicking properties, environmentally friendly, sexy and kind to sensitive skin, bamboo bras have been extolled by the style bible Vogue as
“the latest in eco chic”.

BRANDING INSIDE-OUT Lingerie brands get new branding
possibilities. 3D Cups make it possible to transform designer‘s ideas
into 3-dimensional reality. Company’s logos can now be moulded
inside the cup for discreet branding. Depending on size and position
push-up features and other functional aspects such as breathability
or ventilation are also possible. The example above shows the design

THE DEVIL WEARS MUEHLMEIER When MUEHLMEIER were invited by the Italian fashion house Prada to transform the
cup design of a Prada bustier, they seized upon the opportunity to
demonstrate the superior capabilities of MUEHLMEIER in moulding
and design. Engineers at MUEHLMEIER used the latest advancements
in laser-cutting technology to achieve impressive results.

The editor in chief of Bodyshaping
Magazine had the pleasure of talking
to Roman Muehlmeier, the owner of
Germany’s leading Bra Cup Maker,
on the companies past achievements
and future trends both internal and
within the industry.
BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE: You are now the
2nd generation of Muehlmeier; what was the
vision of your father when he founded the
company in 1949?
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: Muehlmeier had a
very clear vision from the beginning, which
was to support the fashion and lingerie businesses with state of the art components. As
a result we have played a very active part in
several visual and 3D trends.

In the eighties
new companies broke into the lifestyle and
fashion worlds - this must have had an impact
on your business?
BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE:
It was the strong
approaches of divas like Pamela Ewing, Christel Carrington and Grace Jones who underlined their power and appearance with strong
shoulder pads and defined Bodyshaping.
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER:
BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE: How did MUEHL-
MEIER support this trend?
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: We already had lots
of experience in this field from the production
of millions of shoulder-pads and our extensive bra cup production. Our 3D know-how
enabled us to transfer this knowledge directly
to the new requirements of push-up bra cups.

BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE:
develop since the Wonderbra revolution?
The Wonderbra is
in fact a fantastic concept. If designed right,
the push-up principle supports millions of
women around the globe. It doesn’t just give
a better look, but also delivers self-confidence
and takes the tradition of Bodyshaping in
fashion to new heights.
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: We speak of three
generations of bra cups: Firstly there is the
cut and sewn, which is the original handcrafted principle where two or more pieces are
joined with seam shaping into one unit. It is
really an art to make them but it depends on
high sewing standards. Even the best lingerie
manufacturers cannot avoid “flat-spots” or
pressure marks. Therefore the technique of

birth of the Wonderbra. What happened?

BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE: Mr. Muehlmeier,
you talk so enthusiastically about the full 3D
Cup. Can you tell us a little more about it?
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: The 3D Bodyshaping
possibilities opened up a completely new
area for our research and development. Two
years ago our MUEHLMEIER engineers started to work very closely with doctors, fashion
designers and industrial designers to analyze
all possibilities and develop important new
details.
MUEHLMEIER has developed a ventilation system
that is 40% more breathable, while keeping the
body dry and at the right
temperature. We are very
proud of our “Air Vent
Support System”.
BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE: Can you tell us
about the results?
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: The challenge is one
of body and mind. The body emits heat and
moisture, which gives an uncomfortable feel
of dampness and causes bad odours. MUEHLMEIER has developed a ventilation system
that is 40% more breathable, while keeping
the body dry and at the right temperature.
We are very proud of our “Air Vent Support
System”.
BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE: That sounds very
interesting, can you tell us more about any
other details?
Roman

“cut and sewn” will shortly disappear from the
lingerie world.
The second was EVA forming, which was a big
step forward for two reasons. Firstly, we were
able to form bra cups in precise 3D shapes.
And secondly, the process was very efficient
with big moulds, which produced up to 12
pieces in one moulding operation. But the EVA
forming principles limit the possibilities of a
state of the art bra cups. Due to foam edges
of approximately 3mm and individual wall
thickness, capabilities of supporting specific
areas is very limited. Therefore MUEHLMEIER
stopped this technology in 1999. I am very
surprised that some makers still deliver this
inferior technology to the lingerie industry.
Last but not least is the full 3D Cup, which
is the MUEHLMEIER standard. It gives you so
many opportunities. It is the favourite of selfconfident women around the globe for two
reasons: it feels so comfortable because the8

big change in society. People are getting taller
and the convenient food supply in industrial
countries has lead to bigger body shapes. How
did MUEHLMEIER react to this change?
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: For us it is a big chal-
lenge and an opportunity at the same time.
We cannot just make our sizes bigger, because
bust weight and volume is an exponential
factor of size. For example two times the size
means four times the weight! We had to de-
velop entirely new structures. This is where
our engineering has done a fantastic job. To
support greater load unidirectional high tech
fibres have been integrated into the bra cup,
almost like futuristic suspension bridges
where tons of load is supported by thin
carbon strings. I am very happy to announce
that today we can support bigger volumes with
exactly the same performance as we have been
supporting standard sizes for a long time.
We have become an integral part of the
lingerie and fashion industry and are at the forefront of new trends and demands. Our customers come to us to find out what’s hot and
what’s not. Every season we analyse specific
trend topics and offer a wide range of accessories that fit perfectly together in style, pattern
and colour. We have also started to market
components and elements directly to retailers,
like our range of push-up pads.
BODYSHAPING MAGAZINE: In fashion and
lingerie we see a very strong trend towards
super-soft materials and organic fibres. What
role does this play in your collection?
We see ourselves as a service provider: we
support strong brands with our know-how,
components and - if needed - full service. We
are in the position to deliver components and
or finished products.
ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: The latest series of
foam bra cups is covered with a bamboo
layer that is kind to skin and offers supreme

ROMAN MUEHLMEIER: You are right, there is
a lot more that we do. My father started the
company by producing buttons and we have
expanded that side of the business into a huge
range of accessories.

By combining the findings of the medical experts and after a
rigorous study of body dynamics the designers had a clear picture of the
parameters in which they could work.
Much of the inspiration for the cup designs came from the power and
beauty of nature as well as influences from sports style and haute
couture.
By using MUEHLMEIER’s “Air Vent Support System” the designers
were able to create cups that delivered optimum climate control. The
“Air Vent Support System” allows the skin to breath, regulates temperature and wicks moisture away from the skin.
Prototypes were then methodically tested on models, a process which
brought about further developments in the field of climate management. In short, the greater the volume of material the more heat is
generated, leading to discomfort, moisture build-up and odour.
The first MUEHLMEIER Designer Cups are now on sale, with customers benefiting from the companies extensive R&D programme.
But MUEHLMEIER is not content, it will continue in its pursuit for the

Did you ever wonder who invented
letterpress printing, the telephone,
refrigerators, the car or the first
petrol engine?
All were designs of German inventors and
engineers like Johann Gutenberg, Philipp
Reis, Carl von Linde and Nikolaus Otto.
Alas, the bikini was not a German invention,
however, its designer, the Frenchman Louis
Renard, was a mechanical engineer and it was
the application of his engineering knowledge
that lead to the bikini’s panelled shaping.
In the 20th century progression of innovation
has been rigorously pursued, including the
development of precision production processes. Time and time again, the envelope

Shoulder pads became popular for women in the 1930s,
when fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli incorporated
them into her work and Hollywood star Joan Crawford
wore them in the film “Letty Lynton”.
Originally they were semi-circular or triangular in shape and were
stuffed with wool, cotton or sawdust. Their purpose was to extend
the shoulder line, so they were positioned at the top of the sleeve.
The shoulder pad became extremely popular in the 1950s, when it
became a must have for the modern woman.
Over the following decades, pad shapes were adapted to changing
trends, new materials and technology, but the popularity of the 50s
was never matched.
Then, at the beginning of the 80s, there was a resurgence of the evening styles of the 1950s. Design elements were reinterpreted for the
new market. Made from cut foam, shoulder pads helped to define the
silhouette, set basic dress shapes and accentuated the upper body.
Before long, this masculine inspired shaping was adopted by women
fighting for their place in the corporate world and became a symbol of
their breach of the gender gap.
Shoulder pads were the defining fashion statement of an era, bestowing an aura of status and position; the age of power dressing was
born. They grew in both size and popularity, with garments from
the brassiere up, coming with its own set. They even became a
custom element, with Velcro sewn onto the pads so that they could be
stacked. By the end of the decade, shoulder pads were the size of
dinner plates, and it was inevitable that they would fall from favour.
By they 1990s they had all but disappeared. They had gone “under
cover”, becoming smaller and less obvious, but remained important
to define shape.
2007 was the year in which the shoulder pad was reborn. Along with
other elements of 80s styling it appeared in Haute Couture in Paris,
Milan, London, New York and Tokyo.
MUEHLMEIER has been at the forefront of the shoulder pads resurgence, and produces modern sandwich construction pads, of varying
thicknesses, for both lined and non-lined clothing. These pads are
made from tried and tested materials.
Classic men’s wear has always been the ultimate testing ground for
both product and production methods, with long-lasting pliancy and
