Q: Someone recently told me this year is
the 20th anniversary of “The X-Files.”
When did the show go off the air? — Gary
Lucas, Columbus, Ohio
A: Believe it or not, it was the fall of 1993
when FBI agents Mulder and Scully
(David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson)
began their tandem investigations of supernatural cases. Duchovny was appearing
only occasionally by the time the hugely
popular Fox series ended in 2002, by
which time it had spawned one feature film
(in 1998) with another to come (in 2008).
Q: I’m enjoying the Johnny Carson segments Turner Classic Movies is showing,
but why is Conan O’Brien needed to host
them? — Paul Marks, Buffalo, N.Y.
A: Devotees of Carson during his years
hosting NBC’s “Tonight Show” may prefer
the segments to speak for themselves, but
having O’Brien provide introductions is a
way to frame them for viewers who might
not have watched — or been born yet to
watch — Carson while he was the king of
late-night television. It’s a contemporary
link for them.
Also, it’s not bad synergy to have
O’Brien in that role. He’s already a member of the Turner “family” through his
weeknight TBS show, “Conan,” and any
time he turns up to present the Carson interviews, it’s unspoken (or sometimes spoken) promotion for his own program.
Q: I’m intrigued by the start of a new
“Ironside” series this fall. Was the original
show Raymond Burr’s last one? — Arthur
Sloan, Reading, Pa.
A: After that police drama ended in 1975,
Burr returned a year later as a media tycoon in the short-lived “Kingston: Confidential.” And in a way, the many “Perry
Mason” TV movies he made after that (26,
by our count) could be considered a series
of a sort ... or more specifically, a revival
of a series.

be like, ‘Keep going!’ And they were
like, ‘OK, you’re good. You’ve got it.’ I
loved every minute, but I was a sore girl
for a few days.”
India and Brazil were among locations used in the film by veteran executive producer Robert Halmi Sr. Finnigan
confirms the atmosphere not only helped
her performance, she was “forever
changed” by it.
“After having seen the way so many
of those communities are,” she reflects,
“I get to come back home to comfort. I’ll
never take what I have for granted again.
When you’re ‘in it,’ it’s a completely different experience from shooting in a studio. I think it made me a better actor and
a better person.”
Alley allows she found “Baby Sellers” educational in a sense. “I’ve been
aware of human trafficking; I just wasn’t
aware of this baby market until this
movie. I have two adopted kids, and I
went through it in a very civil and conservative way. I wasn’t really privy to
this sort of operation, and I had my eyes
opened by this.”
Now filming a TV Land sitcom slated
to premiere in December — and to reunite her with “Cheers” co-star Rhea
Perlman — Alley is pleased “Baby Sellers” is timed as it is.
“I like to do what I haven’t done very
much of,” she says, “so I was excited to
play this interesting sort of villain. I
guess every actor’s plight is to find as
many different roles to play as they can.”
Two familiar television faces welcomed the opportunity that one project
gave them to change things up.
The fact-inspired Lifetime drama
“Baby Sellers,” premiering Saturday,
Aug. 17, offers Kirstie Alley and Jennifer Finnigan (“Monday Mornings”)
chances for something different.
“Cheers” and “Dancing With the Stars”
alum Alley notably underplays the part
of a seemingly respectable adoption
agency chief with a worldwide network,
her illegal supply chain for the youngsters she needs.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent portrayed by Finnigan
is on to the scheme. She infiltrates the
operation, and one notable scene gives
the actresses a face to face confrontation
reminiscent of the midstory showdown
between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro
in 1995’s “Heat.”
“I get to be the bad guy, right?” Alley
asks with a knowing laugh. “I think
when you’re the bad guy, you think
you’re the good guy, or you wouldn’t do
what you do. You have to justify it. I
think every villain thinks they’re right,
though they may be crazy. I don’t think
they know they’re crazy, and that’s what
the danger is.
“This woman knows these kids in
these Third World countries might not
make it to 3 years old and that they
probably will have horrible lives ... and
that’s how I played it,” adds Alley. “She
does have a point. Yes,
she’s ripping babies away
from their mothers, but it’s
a bit like going out on Hollywood Boulevard and ripping a crack baby away
from its mother.”
Previously a star of such
other series as “Close to
Home” and “Better With
You,” Finnigan — a threetime Daytime Emmy winner for her tenure as
Bridget Forrester on CBS’
“The Bold and the Beautiful” — enjoyed turning
into a very physical action
heroine for certain “Baby
Sellers” sequences.
“I took karate for a couple of years,” she reports.
“I love combat; I just get to
do it so rarely. When I was
working with the stunt
doubles and they were
teaching me the fight routines, I think they thought
I was a little crazy. We’d

In 2006, Britain’s Channel 4
aired a dark two-part TV
movie called “Low Winter
Sun” starring Mark Strong
(“Zero Dark Thirty,” “Tinker
Tailor Soldier Spy”) as one of
two police officers in Edinburgh, Scotland, who conspire
to murder a fellow officer and
then discover that nothing is as
it seems.
Starting Sunday, Aug. 11,
AMC airs a 10-episode American adaptation of “Low Winter Sun” set in in the former
industrial titan of Detroit.
Strong reprises his role as Detective Frank Agnew; Lennie
James (“Jericho,” “The Walking Dead”) plays his partner in
crime, Detective Joe Geddes.

the British-born James continues his
run of American TV roles. Playing a
police detective and former Jesuit seminarian who turns to the dark side intrigued him.
“I like his history,” says James, “of
being a man that once had his feet on a
very righteous path, in that he trained
at the seminary to be a priest. I like that
that man is now a murderer. I like the
revelation of his particular version of
why he had to commit that murder and
the man that he’s running away from,
and I like the man he’s trying to be.
“I like navigating all of that and particularly the people that he gets to navigate that with.”
This is not James’ first police role,
but he saw something special in it.
“ ‘Low Winter Sun’ is very much a
character-driven drama,” he says, “with
a backdrop of crime and the police.
Even though you are following, at the
beginning, two police officers who
have killed another police officer,
there’s a whole world of the underworld of Detroit, the crime world, depicted in our story that gives it a whole
other dimension. I’m looking forward
to see how the audience responds to it.”

Lindsay Lohan to get the Oprah

Well, the mind of Lindsay Lohan has, in recent years, seemed an all but empty vessel
and/or a patch of land that is so unhappily
damp it can’t be fired up.
But now that Oprah has stepped into the
picture, even Lindsay’s mother, the much
criticized Dina Lohan, says this is a “fantastic” turn of events. During a Hollywood
luncheon she attended at the European Wax
Center, Dina burbled that, “If anyone is going
to help mentor you, it’s going to be Oprah.”
Oprah will not only “mentor” Lindsay, but
Winfrey’s OWN Network will air an eightepisode “reality series” about Lindsay’s
struggles to stay on the straight and narrow.
(Even though Lindsay has insisted she never
needed rehab and doesn’t have any substance
abuse issues.)
Dina herself, who has never met a camera
she hid from, will probably appear on the
show, too. (“It’s about my family, after all,”
she told E!) Perhaps Oprah will ask Dina a
few hardball questions about how she has
raised her talented daughter?
People always say of Lindsay, “Oh, no
more of her,” but her troubles, alas, that’s
what the saga has been for years, continue to
capture attention. She is still remembered as
the enchanting child and early teen star of
“The Parent Trap,” “Mean Girls” and a couple of other films before her very public fall.
If we can forgive grown men like Eliot
Spitzer and Anthony Weiner for their misdeeds, I think we can save a little room for a
27-year-old woman who attempted to navigate Hollywood’s sludge without an oar or
rudder.
I LOVED the first “Red” movie, starring
Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich
and others, including the wonderful late
Ernest Borgnine. It was a tale of retired spies,
assassins and black ops people getting together after many years for one more go
around of shootings, explosions and betrayals. It was great fun. (Mary-Louise Parker
played Bruce’s younger, eventually-up-foranything girlfriend.) And the movie was popular enough to spawn a sequel, “Red 2,”
which reunites most of the original cast,
along with the addition of the genius Anthony
Hopkins and the eternally luscious Catherine
Zeta-Jones.
Advance reviews have been so-so, though
nobody is saying it is really a disappointment.
The Hollywood Reporter, referring to the actors and the action roles they play, advises
wisely, “Never say retired.”

City, Port Authority, Contractors Discuss Impact property will also be closed during construction. The Port
Authority and the City of Bayonne are looking actively for
of Bayonne Bridge Project
Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that representatives of the City of Bayonne, the
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the contracting firm of Skanska
Koch/Kiewit Infrastructure Company have begun a series of meetings dealing with
raising the roadway of the Bayonne Bridge.
In the first meetings held at Bayonne City Hall on July 25 and 30, the municipality,
the Port Authority, and the contractors had preliminary discussions about construction, communications, scheduling, coordination, emergency management, and future meetings.
The Raise the Roadway Project will last from 2013 to 2017. The main objective of
the project is raising the traffic deck by 64 feet, in order to allow large, modern ships
to pass underneath in transit to Port Newark and Port Elizabeth. The project will
also construct new bridge lanes, shoulders, a median divider, and a 12-ft. bike-andpedestrian walkway. In order to lead traffic to the new deck, the contractors will
construct new approaches for the bridge, which will gain new footings and piers.
The new approaches will be made of pre-cast concrete. New drains and other basic
civil engineering work will also be part of the construction. Thirty to forty subcontractors are expected to participate in the project. The Port Authority expects that
300 to 400 building trades people will be working on the bridge at the height of construction in 2014. Construction work on the project has begun.
The contractor will work on raising the eastern half of the deck before starting on
the western side. The Port Authority expects bridge traffic to be reduced to one lane
by approximately early October 2013. The eastern half of the bridge work will be
completed in 2015. Then the project will shift to the western half of the bridge, continuing to 2017.
Overnight closures of the bridge will start by January 2014 or sooner. Those
overnight closures will take place on weeknights. There may be some overnight closures on weekends, if needed for the construction schedule. During construction,
a 25-mile-per-hour speed limit will be in effect.
No property acquisitions for the project will be necessary. In lieu of such acquisitions, the Port Authority will be using its own land to the greatest extent possible.
The Port Authority has worked on logistics with the Bayonne Board of Education,
White Glove Moving & Storage, and other property owners whose land adjoins the
bridge corridor.
Kennedy Boulevard and Avenue A will remain open during construction. Some
other streets, ramps, and underpasses will be closed as needed.
Due to construction activities on the bridge, the Juliette Street Playground will be
closed temporarily for the safety of residents. Baseball fields located on Port Authority

temporary replacements for the playground and the ballfields. They are also seeking property that can be used temporarily for residential parking.
The Port Authority has pledged to observe all applicable
noise and other regulations during construction. However,
for residents who may be disturbed by construction noise,
the Port Authority may be able to make hotel rooms available
on a temporary basis.
All participants agreed on the importance of maintaining communications with
each other and the public during the next four years. For example, whenever construction necessitates street closings or traffic restrictions, the Port Authority and the
contractors will coordinate with the Bayonne Police Department and the Public
Works Department. The City of Bayonne will advise the public of various impacts
on traffic through the print and electronic media. For example, the bridge will have
only one lane of traffic at various points during construction. Mayor Smith stressed
that the health and safety of citizens and workers alike is of paramount importance.
At the meetings, police, fire, and emergency medical representatives discussed,
when construction already started, managing any emergencies from both Bayonne
and Staten Island during construction. Those discussions will continue, so that all
agencies involved can develop a coordinated approach to emergency response. The
Port Authority Police Department will be the lead emergency agency for the bridge.
The emergency services of the City of Bayonne, the City of New York, and other governmental agencies will participate in emergency response as needed or requested.
Port Authority representatives confirmed that the sidewalk on the bridge, and the
staircase that leads to it, will be closed effective Monday, August 5, 2013. Due to the
closing of the sidewalk on the bridge, the Port Authority will operate a weekend shuttle
service for pedestrians and bicycle riders. That service will operate during certain
months from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekends. Details will be announced.
The Skanska construction managers will have an office in Bayonne, and the Port Authority will set up a trailer on 1st Street near the Bayonne Little League stadium.
Discussions between the parties will continue throughout duration of the project.

All too often reality shows feature people we would want to
avoid in real life.
But there’s a lovely moment in
Bravo’s “Eat, Drink, Love,” premiering Sunday, Aug. 11, that
could make you wish you picked
up your morning treat and coffee
at Fonuts, a Los Angeles bakery.
Customers choose their “fonuts”
and dance with baker and coowner Waylynn Lucas. Fonuts, a
play on the words “faux” and
“doughnuts,” look like typical
doughnuts, but they are never
fried.
“We are all about the fun,” Lucas
says. “At Fonuts we don’t think to
take anything too seriously.”
The show revolves around five
single women in the food industry,
including Lucas, a marketer, editor,
personal chef and writer. Though
the publicity information touts
them as a “tight-knit circle of
friends,” Lucas says they were not
pals before the show, though she
had casually met a couple of them.
The series follows the women at
work, in different kitchens and en-
joying greatlooking meals and
drinks in different L.A. hot spots.
Lucas describes it as “Sex and the
City” meets “Top Chef.”
“The women, young, single and
successful, is the ‘Sex and the City’
aspect, but we are all in the food industry,” she says. “It’s the base storyline of the show and what brings
us together, and you get a sneak
peek of the entire food industry.”
A pastry chef, Lucas had worked
in hotels and finer restaurants before opening Fonuts with partner
Nancy Truman two years ago. She
earned a degree in baking at the Art
Institute of Los Angeles.
Lucas is one of those lucky people who knew what she wanted to
do since she was 12. During the
summers, she worked in a family
friend’s restaurant in Colorado,
starting as a dishwasher and working her way up.
“I loved the fun of it,” Lucas says
of working as a pastry chef. “I
loved the service aspect. It’s fun
and fast-paced and dealing with
people and hard work and instantly
rewarding.”

A SPECIAL TREAT FOR
ANYTIME OF DAY OR NIGHT
Of all the many kinds of dessert I know and
love, one in particular stands out because people enjoy eating it at any time of day - after
dinner, for breakfast, as a mid-morning or afternoon treat, or even late at night standing in
front of the open refrigerator.
I’m talking, of course, about cheesecake.
It’s easy to understand why cheesecake enjoys such round-the-clock popularity. After
all, it features ingredients that work well in so
many different recipes, both sweet and savory: cream cheese, sour cream and eggs.
Combined with sugar, sweet spices and other
embellishments such as fruit, nuts or chocolate, those main elements add up to a treat
that’s at once rich, wholesome and entirely
satisfying. And the recipe is easy to make for
children who are young, old or even grownup.
Such ease of preparation is especially true
for my Mini Strawberry Swirl Cheesecakes.
You don’t need any of the special equipment
some cheesecake recipes require, particularly
a springform pan with removable sides. In
fact, they bake in 1-cup (250-ml) ramekins and even a muffin pan will do fine. And my
cheesecakes are crustless, so there’s no mussing or fussing with graham cracker or cookie
crumbs.
What makes the recipe extra delightful is
the strawberry puree in each little cheesecake.
Since we all eat with our eyes first, that colorful swirl immediately excites the appetite.
You can use another kind of berry instead, if
you like, such as raspberries, boysenberries
or blueberries. Whatever your choice, try to
find good-quality organic berries to ensure
that you have the best-tasting, healthiest and
most environmentally responsible results.
As for the cheese part, my recipe features
the same creamy mixture we use to make
Spago’s popular cheesecake. I always get the
best results from the widely available blocks
of Philadelphia brand. Be sure to buy regular

little treats. I love them so much, I’ve even
been known to double the recipe. If you bake
them in individual ceramic ramekins, you
don’t even have to unmold the extras. Just
keep them covered with plastic wrap in the
refrigerator and enjoy them several days later,
right out of the mold or unmolded and decorated with more sauce and berries.

refrigerator.
MINI STRAWBERRY-SWIRL
CHEESECAKES Makes 12
STRAWBERRY COMPOTE:
3 baskets fresh strawberries, 1 pint each,
hulled and cut into thick slices
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1-1/2 cinnamon sticks
SPAGO CHEESECAKE FILLING:
1-1/2 pounds cream cheese,
cut into small pieces, at room temperature
1-1/4 cups granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sour cream
1 tablespoon dark rum
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 eggs
Water
Sliced fresh strawberries or whole
blueberries, for garnish
Position the rack in the center of the oven.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. With nonstick cooking spray, coat each of a dozen 1cup ramekins. Set aside.

First, make the Strawberry Compote: In a
medium nonreactive saucepan, combine the
berries, sugar and cinnamon sticks. Cook
over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally,
until the mixture thickens slightly and just
coats the back of a spoon, about 15 minutes.
Set aside to cool.
Prepare the Spago Cheesecake Filling: Put
the cream cheese, sugar and salt in the large
bowl of an electric mixer or in a large mixing
bowl. Using the paddle or beaters of a handheld electric mixer, beat at medium speed
until smooth, stopping occasionally to scrape
down the sides and the beaters with a rubber
spatula. Raise the speed to high and continue
to beat until the mixture is creamy. Add the
sour cream, rum, lemon juice and vanilla, and
continue beating at medium speed until well
blended. Add the eggs and beat just until
combined.
Bring a kettle of water to a boil.
Meanwhile, spoon about 1 tablespoon of
the cooled Strawberry Compote into the bottom of each ramekin. Reserve the rest covered in the refrigerator. Fill each ramekin with
the Spago Cheesecake Filling.
Arrange the ramekins in a large baking pan
with sides. Open the oven, carefully slide out
the shelf and place the baking pan on the
shelf. Pour boiling water into the pan halfway
up the sides of the ramekins. Carefully slide
in the shelf, close the oven door and bake
until the cheesecakes begin to pull away from
the sides of the ramekins and are almost firm
to the touch, 35 to 40 minutes.
Carefully remove the baking pan from the
oven. Carefully lift out the ramekins and
place on a wire rack and let cool. Refrigerate,
covered, overnight.
When ready to serve, run a sharp knife
around the inside edge of each ramekin and
invert the cheesecake onto a serving plate.
The compote will run down the sides of each
cake. If they stick, dip the bottoms of the
ramekins in hot water for 30 seconds to
loosen the cheesecakes and try again.
Garnish with slices of fresh strawberries or
a few blueberries. Serve immediately, accompanied by extra Strawberry Compote.
