Canada’s original literacy organization since 1899.
About the SCRABBLE® Corporate Challenge in support of Frontier College
Frontier College’s SCRABBLE® Corporate Challenge, presented by TMX Group, is Frontier College’s
preeminent fundraising event. The 11th annual event takes place in Toronto on:
Wednesday, March 4, 2015
5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Arcadian Court
It is a fun-filled evening that sees Bay Street law firms, investment firms, financial institutions and blue chip
corporations play SCRABBLE® and compete against each other for the coveted TMX Cup, while raising funds
for Frontier College, Canada’s original literacy organization.
A tournament based on a word game is the perfect event to bring awareness to low literacy rates in Canada.
Since 2005, the SCRABBLE® Corporate Challenge has raised over $2.5 million for Frontier College. These
important funds help to train volunteers to deliver vital literacy and learning support to disadvantaged
children, youth and adults in locations such as aboriginal communities, women’s shelters, inner-city schools,
farms and community housing. For more information visit www.frontiercollege.ca
From lawyers to bankers, over 350 people get on board to become the top wordsmith and help support
literacy. Teams consist of four players and four guests and cost $6,000 each. Each player plays SCRABBLE®,
competing against three competitors. There are four ways to win:
1.
The team with the highest score wins the TMX Cup and the opportunity to open the TSX Market!
2.
The team with the highest score in their business conference wins their conference title.
3.
The three individual players with the highest scores win the Three Stars Award.
4.
NEW! Battle of the Champions Round. Win the ultimate title!
At the event, players can increase their chances of winning by purchasing Helpful Assists. There are different
types of Helpful Assists available, including word lists and Canada’s top SCRABBLE® players, known as
ringers, who will come to your table, look at your letters and help you come up with a seven letter word, a
triple score or a word that will increase your score.
Guests have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other senior level executives from competing
corporations, cheer on their team, bid on fantastic silent auction items, enjoy canapés and cocktails, while
taking in the competitive atmosphere. Team entry fees, sponsorships and donations helped to raise more
than $365,000 for Frontier College’s literacy programs in 2014. This year we hope to increase participation
and increase the amount of money raised to improve literacy for children, youth and adults across the
country.

About Frontier College
Frontier College was founded in 1899 on the belief that literacy is a fundamental right. For decades, our
work was carried out by university students who signed on to live, work and teach alongside workers in
isolated "frontier" settlements: rail gangs, lumber and mining camps and shipyards. Today, you’ll find us on
inner-city streets and remote reserves, in schools and libraries, public housing sites, prisons, farms and
shelters. We work with volunteers and community partners to give children, youth and adults across Canada
the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential and contribute to society.
According to the Canadian Council on Learning, 42% of adult Canadians do not possess the required level of
literacy to cope with everyday tasks in contemporary society. That means millions of Canadians are at risk of
poverty, poor health and high unemployment, all of which have been directly linked to low literacy. Frontier
College plays a key role in helping people who are struggling to build their literacy and numeracy skills. Our
programs reach over 29,000 learners annually, and are tailored to the needs of each student and each
community we serve.

Frontier College delivers literacy programs through a network of carefully
selected, screened and trained volunteer literacy tutors who are placed in
schools, community centres, reserves, prisons, shelters and libraries where
they work with children, youth, and adults in one to one and small group
settings.

We train community-based organizations in how to run Reading Circles,
Homework Clubs, and adult programming through capacity building
workshops for staff and volunteers. Through these workshops, organizations
with limited resources are able to provide professional development to their
staff, gain access to valuable information, and strengthen the literacy program
offerings in their communities.

We run literacy summer camps for children, including those living in remote Aboriginal communities. These
activities support literacy development and address the issue of summer learning loss. These programs are
focused on low-income families in communities across Canada.
Literacy and the Future: Minimum literacy requirements have evolved
with globalization and new technology. Canadians have to be more
skilled at reading, writing, counting and computing in order to compete
for jobs and participate as informed citizens. Frontier College has been a
leader in literacy for over 115 years, and our work has never been more
important that it is in today’s knowledge-based economy.
