Book Bytes
Fall/Winter
2014
I’m not sure why I assume things will slow down when summer ends. Perhaps it’s because we have usually spent a frantic six
weeks putting on fun-filled, program-packed, amazing prize-filled Summer Reading Fun, or perhaps it’s because I look forward to
my kids going back to school and believe that since my house is almost empty during the day that things will also become quiet at
the library. Yet every September, I realize fall is just another busy season for librarians, starting with September being National
Library Card Month (hint, hint). If you don’t have one of your own, you really should, because we are so much more than just a
place to find great books, music and movies. We also have a big lineup of fall programs for the whole family! Also in the Fall is
Banned Books Week and as a member of the Intellectual Freedom Committee for the Illinois Library Association, I have
recommitted myself to protecting your Freedom to Read , so there will some exciting events for that occasion as well.
As for the summer, it was a huge success—thanks to the amazing sponsors below and all you wonderful participants who made
this our best summer ever. We celebrated 100 Years by eating a lot of pie, we handed out 2,000 Brookfield Zoo passes, did a
gazillion programs, and took some fun bus trips. And did I mention all that reading we bribed you into doing!? We are exhausted.
We are ready for the leaves to turn and the evenings to start sooner so we can get back to cozy evenings in the chair...reading
(what else would librarians do?). This fall we hope to make more big changes at your library - for sure a new website (which is
currently under construction); also in the works is eRead Illinois a new e-book lending site to compliment our Overdrive Collection
and double your electronic offerings. You’ll have to keep watching us to see what’s next so don’t forget to check us out!
