20 YEARS on.....
EDARAN Chairman Reminds Employees
That Continual Learning Is The Key To
Continued Success
EDARAN commemorated its 20th Anniversary with a Grand Dinner at the
Hilton Kuala Lumpur on 16 August. Themed ‘Together in Success’, key
customers joined members of EDARAN management and staff to celebrate
the auspicious occasion.
at
“It was important that our Customers joined us in this significant milestone
celebration because EDARAN would not have come to this day without
their support. Together with our Customers, we will move forward to
welcome new opportunities,” said Managing Director Dato’ Bistamam
Ramli.
In his keynote address, Company Chairman Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli shed
light on the background of EDARAN and on the reason why EDARAN
came into being. He said that EDARAN was founded fundamentally to
fulfill a corporate social responsibility, specifically in response to the plight
of unemployed graduates who were experiencing difficulties in finding
employment during the recession years of the late 80’s. With the minimal
capital available, EDARAN was established as a business enterprise that
distributed computer hardware. Over the years, the business of EDARAN
expanded and grew to involve various aspects of I.T. activities.
“From our humble beginnings, we have moved on and earned ourselves a respectable position within the Information Communications
Technology industry. Though we started off with very little, we have always had big hopes and bigger ambitions for the company and
for the people who serve with the company,” said Tan Sri Tajudin.
As an organization EDARAN believes in growing through knowledge and the application of knowledge.
“We believe in ‘learning that continues from the cradle to the grave’ – continuous, lifelong learning. Having employees empowered with
knowledge is the surest way of ensuring the company’s growth. Our employees must be given the opportunity to continually acquire
knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to their work for as long as they serve the company,” added Tan Sri Tajudin.

I.T. SERVICES’
EDARAN takes another affirmative step in tandem with
its transformation programme to become more a relevant
and dynamic entity in the I.T industry. The name of its
fully owned subsidiary Edaran Komputer has been
changed to Edaran I.T Services, a change initiated to
reflect the Company’s elevated status as full fledged
I.T services and solutions provider.
“Edaran Komputer as we used to call ourselves, has
evolved over the years to become an I.T company that
is now able to offer a broad host of knowledge, solutions
and services needed in the market. Today we do not
only provide systems integration and maintenance
services but we also provide a full spectrum of value

benefits to our customers. Our scope of offerings have
- Edaran I.T. Services
grown to include software applications as well as
infrastructure solutions development, support and
maintenance,” said Executive Vice President of Edaran I.T Services Sdn Bhd,
Mustafa Rawther Mohamed Rawther.
Edaran I.T Services has also expanded its service offerings into the area of
software development which includes development of customized application
on .NET and Java.
“The recent successful appraisal of Edaran I.T Services for CMMI Level 3 coupled
with our continual and concerted efforts to upgrade our knowledge and competency
level such as achieving Microsoft Gold Partner status have served to place
Edaran I.T Services more distinctly and credibly in the market,” added Encik
Mustafa Rawther.
In another area of service, Edaran I.T Services, with its nationwide presence
is now able to provide an enhanced level of maintenance services which comes
with the assurance of warranty services for PC and servers. To ensure the
provision of such high level technical support, every member of Edaran I.T
Services’ technical staff at the support centres are trained and certified by the
principals .,
Expanding
Our Reach
In a pro-active move to get closer to its customers, EDARAN I.T Services
Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Edaran Komputer Sdn Bhd) has expanded
its presence into every state in Peninsula Malaysia bringing its network
presence to a total of 15 Customer Support Centres.
“This expansion programme mirrors our commitment to become more
consultative in our approach to customer relations and management. The
expansion programme is timely and is in tandem with the growing spread

of our customer sites throughout Malaysia. The Ministry of Health (MOH)
and Kastam Diraja Malaysia (KDRM) for instance, represent customers with a substantial
spread of offices throughout the country. Apart from the MOH and KDRM, UiTM and
FOSIM also have their offices in every state of the country. The number of sites that we
have to service and maintain increases accordingly,” said Encik Amrun Shaari, the Project
Manager.
“The initiative to extend our presence was spurred by the growing need to respond in
quick time to the needs of our customers. By expanding our presence we are actually
striving to not just meet but exceed the requirements stated in the Service Level Agreement
(SLA) and ultimately to provide delightful experiences for our customers each time we
serve them. We are aware that our immediate attention to their slightest problem plays
an important role in improving their productivity and efficiency,” added Encik Amrun.
“We believe that our expanded presence will give us a further edge in winning new clients
and contracts particularly those which require their I.T services provider to have a nationwide
presence,” said Encik Amrun.
Every support centre is able to provide the full gamut of maintenance services for hardware
systems and software applications. The Company has recruited 17 new technical staff
to beef up its customer service support. It has also beefed up its manpower at its Helpdesk.
The activities of the new branches are monitored by managers with HQ
kept updated on all activities. Every issue or problem logged by customers
are keyed-into the Company’s Helpdesk System. The system enables
the Company to know whether the requirements of the customer’s SLA
are met or not.

“As an I.T services and solutions provider, the expertise and substantial experience
that we have built over the past 20 years have earned us a sound reputation in
key sectors of the market. Some of these sectors include the health, customs,
education, government and municipals. It is our intention to increase our presence
in more industry sectors as the EDARAN Group ventures into new industries
and new business activities,” concluded Encik Mustafa Rawther.

Another Step Towards Excellence
SM
CMMI Level 3
Edaran I.T Services (formerly known as Edaran Komputer)
was successfully appraised for CMMI - Level 3, a recognition
sanctioned by the Software Engineering Institute of the
Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburg, U.S.A. in August
2008.
The Company embarked on the CMMI programme with a view
to improving its business and organisational processes so
as to improve the Company’s overall efficiency and proficiency.
“As an I.T. solutions and services provider, we recognize the critical need for a high
level of integrity in our products and services. To achieve that , it is imperative that
the processes at every stage of our activities are fully effective because, ultimately,
the quality of our products and services is dependent on the quality of the processes
we use to acquire, develop and maintain them,” said EDARAN Managing Director,
Dato’ Bistamam Ramli.
“For that reason, we embarked on the CMMI route with the primary objective of
improving our software engineering and delivery processes so as to raise the overall
level of Edaran I.T Services’ proficiency and the quality of our products and services,
added Dato’ Bistamam.
The Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) is, in fact, a process improvement
approach that provides organisations with the essential elements of effective
processes. It provides the latest best practices for product and service development
and maintenance. CMMI helps integrate traditionally separate organisational functions,
set process improvement goals and priorities, provide guidance for quality processes,
and provide a point of reference for appraising current processes.
Having been successfully appraised for CMMI Level 3, the Company will use the
CMMI approach to guide its process improvement across projects, internal divisions,
and the entire organization, and link management and divisional activities to the
Company’s objectives.
With professionally and internationally recognised certification such as this, Edaran
I.T Services moves itself further up the professionalism and competency curve and
places itself on a more competitve platform in the industry.
Scaling the Competency Curve
8 Receive MCSE Certification
8 Edaran I.T Services (formerly known as Edaran Komputer) engineers recently qualified
as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) within the stipulated training time frame
of 17 months. The certification programme which began in April 2007 comprised a total
of 7 modules, complete with their respective examination at the end of each module.
Candidates were required to pass all exams (passing mark of 700/1,000) to qualify as
MCSE.
“It is our aim to provide more and more of such professional competency training for our
engineers and technical support. To remain relevant and competitive, we have no other
option but to keep improving our skills and competency. This Microsoft certification for
our engineers is one of those important certifications to sustain ourselves as a competent
Microsoft Partner. We will continue to pursue other qualifications necessary to keep
us competitive and updated in our knowledge,” said Dato’ Bistamam Ramli, Managing
Director of EDARAN .
“Skills and training programmes such as this is part and parcel of our commitment to
pursuing knowledge as well as our commitment to continually train our people so that
they improve as professionals. The knowledge and skills they acquire can be taken with
them wherever they go. The Company is gratified when they are able to improve their
market value as professionals,” added Dato’ Bistamam.
The MCSE qualification is an industry standard mapped for I.T professionals by Microsoft.
The certification qualifies these engineers in skill sets required to design and implement
I.T. infrastructure functions based on Microsoft Windows platform and Microsoft server
software. The presence of MCSE engineers in EDARAN will serve to open up market
opportunities created by Microsoft technologies for EDARAN. The presence of these
engineers will also help the company to better position and market their Microsoft solutions
and services.
The 8 certified engineers include:

Developing
English Proficiency
at EDARAN
Recognising the value that clear communication, persuasive
presentation and better proficiency in the English language
bring to the Company, EDARAN initiated intensive courses on
the subject for its Management team, Managers and Executives.
The courses conducted by Dr. Robert Lam (Ph.D - English),
Founder of the Robert Lam English Language, aimed to impart
relevant techniques in the English language and improve the
participants’ professional presentation skills.
Participants were taught principles of effective up-front
communication particularly vocal and visual secrets of a
professional speaker and techniques on planning and preparing
excellent presentations. The sessions included diction and
phonetics and English grammar.
Marketing Executives attended a special module on effective
sales and business presentation skills while senior staff members
whose work involved writing letters and business reports were
trained in professional business and technical. Participants were
also taught the critical techniques of handling questions and
establishing rapport with the audience. They were also taught
the use of ‘modern’ and dynamic language and business email
writing.
All participants felt the courses they attended helped to boost
their confidence in the English language and especially helped
to improve their delivery skills in professional presentations.
Bertuah ‘EDARAN’ ada nakhodanya.

EDARAN applauded its most deserving employee with the prestigious ‘Chairman’s

approachable, humble and ever helpful person. These traits have earned him the accolade
of the Company’s ‘Value Ambassador’.
Nor Azwan is a Senior Customs Engineer with Edaran I.T Services , a wholly

the past 15 years. Nor Azwan started off as a technician in 1993, repairing and
fixing computers and printers for ISETAN, one of EDARAN’s customers back
then. He moved on into the area of preventive and corrective maintenance services

I get the greatest satisfaction when I do my work sincerely and they meet the

To make up for that, I’ll make sure that I spend at least an hour talking with my

THOUGHTS
Success - By What Measures?
One would think that after
so many centuries of human
progress, man would be
living in a cleaner, safer and
more
prosperous
environment. Humankind
has achieved many marvels
in various fields such as in
the arts, science, medicine
and technology. Distances
have been shortened, what
took decades to construct is
today accomplished within
a fragment of time, we have
discovered new cures, we have conquered the oceans and the
mountains. Computers and electronic gadgets coveniently run our
lives. .
Yet what is mirrored in our world today does not quite reflect what
one would expect of a ‘civilized’ society.
We only need to look around us to realize that we are actually at
odds with our own progress. Today we face crises of all kinds. The
current financial meltdown is of such epic proportions that even
societies far from the epicenter of the storm are not going to be
spared. Along with the ailing financial system, major industries
are in dire straits. The housing industry and the auto industry for
instance are facing some of their toughest times. Businesses are
folding up. At the civilian level, massive retrenchment is happening
and employees all over the world face the impending doom of
unemployment in the midst of spiraling costs. The income disparity
between the rich elite and the masses is widening. A cloud of fear,
uncertainty and worry is enveloping the global society.
And it is apparent that the financial crisis is not the only storm we
need to weather. We are also witnessing disasters and calamities
of other kinds, the most looming of which is the threat of global
warming. Our hills are sliced, our waters polluted, our parks are
disappearing, our trees felled in the name of development and
progress. We are witnessing environmental destructions that lead
to human tragedies and disasters, trouble and turmoil that leave
ordinary citizens frustrated and disillusioned, scandals such as the
melamine poisoning, the emergence of new diseases that confound
our doctors and scientists. We are bombarded by one attack after
another and the end is not in sight.
Have we stopped to wonder why these things are happening at
such an alarming rate? Indeed have we stopped to wonder where
we are heading? Where will the chaos lead?
Across the globe there is a blatant manifestation of some of the
worst traits of human nature – greed, deception, injustice, prejudice,
arrogance, apathy and indifference, whether in governments,
industries or civil society. Could it be that the thirst for material
success and achievement is becoming more and more
unquenchable? Yet what is this ‘success’ that humankind seems
to be chasing?
While the world may have their own understanding of ‘success’ it
is my hope that at least among our own circles, we will approach
the concept of ‘success’ from both the physical and non-physical
perspectives. As much as physical and tangible successes promise
satisfaction, let us remember that they will not be sustainable nor
will they bring real rewards unless they are underpinned by values
and ethics. In a more familiar sense, our successes should be
defined by both the ‘jasmani’ (physical) and ‘rohani’ (spiritual)
dimensions of our lives. Only then can we say that our successes
are complete and wholesome.
It is my belief is that there is a need to go back to basics and
rebuild the foundations of our society on strong values and ethics.
For us Muslims, it would simply mean returning to the values and
principles that have been handed down by the prophets and the
messengers of Almighty Allah. Were we not given this beautiful
universe complete with the resources to sustain, nurture and protect
humankind and all of creation? Were we not taught that as part of
creation, we must be in sync with the rest of His creation if we are
to enjoy the fullness of His blessings. I believe that somewhere
along the way, many have sold their souls in exchange for power,
fame and fortune. I believe that humankind has become too greedy
and too clever for its own good. Such greed and ill-founded
passions have in turn given rise to a soul-less society, an
irresponsible society with no regard for the environment and no
regard for neighbour. The question begs to be asked - Is humankind
bringing about his own destruction?
I like to think that the endless barrage of crises the world is facing
today serves to remind us to check our own lives, re-examine our
actions and regain our footing on a firm foundation of values. I
would like to think that arising from the gloomy rubble of our
decaying society, we have the opportunity to do our bit to make
our immediate environment better. We can play our part to stop
the rot and the decay. We can begin to do that by doing the right
things at our offices and in our jobs. We can begin by applying the
right principles and living by the values of our Faith. And finally I
would like to think that if more people woke up to the signs of the
times and heeded the message in the crises that surround them,
humankind will begin to see a new dawn of prosperity and peace.
Tajudin Ramli
Chairman
Berjayakah Kita? Ukuran Apa Yang Kita Pakai?
lagi kehidupan harian mereka. Malangnya kejayaan-kejayaan
berbagai-bagai soalan. Mengapakah kepincangan dan kegawatan
boleh terjadi? Di mana salah kita? Sudah cukupkah tindakan kita?
Maka timbullah soalan demi soalan, kajian demi kajian, pelan
mengkaji ukuran kejayaan ataupun ‘measure of success’ itu
Ia hanya berasaskan ukuranukuran fizikal sahaja. Oleh itu apa yang dianggap KEJAYAAN,
tidak dapat bertahan lama. Misalnya, akhir-akhir ini masyarakat
antarabangsa sedang dilanda ‘financial meltdown’ atau kegawatan
kewangan. Kegawatan-kewangan ini pula telah menyebabkan
industri-industri lain seperti industri perumahan, automotif dan
berbagai-bagai industri lagi dilanda kegawatan juga. Malah
kebanyakan industri-industri penting yang amat diperlukan oleh
masyarakat juga tlah dilanda kegawatan.
Bila diteliti, kita dapati bahawa kegawatan kewangan atau
‘financial meltdown’ telah dimulakan oleh kerakusan segolongan
kecil manusia sahaja. Mereka telah ‘create the measure of
besar melalui sistem ‘derivatives’ . Mereka sendiri mungkin sedar
mereka. Namun ukuran kejayaan atau ‘measure of success’ yang
sedemikian diteruskan juga bagi memenuhi tuntutan kerakusan
mereka.
Ukuran berasaskan
fizikal semata-mata tentulah tidak mencukupi untuk membolehkan
kejayaan atau sukses bertahan lama. Oleh itu, ukuran sukses
atau ‘measure of success’ itu sendiri mestilah diperkembangkan
dengan mengambil kira prinsip-prinsip baik yang mengurangkan
kerakusan manusia.
Ia,
Insha Allah, kejayaan sebenarnya.
