Oktoberfest Vermont Management Team:
WELCOME TO OKTOBERFEST
VERMONT...
From the Director and Harbormaster
Our Waterfront Park is proud to host
Oktoberfest Vermont and many other big events throughout the year.
Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront department has a mission
to connect people to our parks, and festivals such as this are a perfect
opportunity to come together. We are pleased to be recognized as a Seven
Daysies award winner for Best Large Live Music Venue among others.
As you enjoy the breathtaking views of Lake Champlain in its early
autumn beauty, you’ll also be able to admire some of the many Parks
projects that improve our beautiful city and enrich our lives. Some highlights
include the rehabilitation and reinvention of the Burlington bike path that is
now well underway with the first phase in the Waterfront park area. With the
leadership of the Parks staff, several other parks improvement projects have
also been completed this summer, including: new bathrooms at Oakledge
Park, the redesign of the Burlington Community Boathouse Customer
Service Area and the Waterfront boardwalk. Several other improvements
stemmed from community input and interdepartmental cooperation, and
have fostered some buzz-worthy projects such as the world-class skate
park that is scheduled for opening later this fall, and the new and unique
playground equipment in Starr Farm Park.
We continue to focus our efforts towards finalizing the first-ever
Parks Master Plan that will provide a strategy to guide and maximize the
City’s investments in our parks and open spaces over the next decade.
Creating more inspired places and recreational opportunities for all
areas and people within our diverse city.
From the beautiful autumn foliage to the sparkling snow and ice of
winter, the cooler months are often favorite seasons for Vermonters, and
our Parks & Recreation department has all sorts of outdoor activities
planned. We also hope that you take advantage of all the indoor activities
as well such as indoor & outdoor ice skating, basketball, pickleball, family
karate and more.

SEPTEMBER 24TH - 27TH, 2015
OKTOBERFEST VERMONT IS PROUD TO WELCOME
THESE INCREDIBLE BREWERS TO OUR INAUGURAL EVENT.
It is our goal to bring together the best local, regional, and world-renowned Oktoberfest brewers on an annual basis so that we can all enjoy their craft.
2015 will bring us six traditional German Oktoberfest breweries, 21 local Vermont breweries, 3 Canadian breweries from Quebec, and 12 amazing regional breweries.
Breweries and beers being poured are subject to change at any time.
GERMAN
start of Lent. Nowadays, Paulaner is
the largest brewery in Bavaria and one
of the leading specialist breweries in
Germany.
HOFBRAU
Munich, Germany
Hofbräu
Munich’s famous “hofbrauhaus”, was
founded in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria, Wilhelm V. It is one of Munich’s
oldest beer halls. It was originally
founded as the brewery to the old
Royal Residence, which at that time
was situated just around the corner
from where the beer hall stands today.
The beer quickly became quite popular thanks to the first brewer, Heimeran
Pongratz, and the famous “Bavarian
Beer Purity Law” of 1516 that stated
that only natural ingredients could
be used in the brewing process.
Maximilian I, Wilhelm’s son and heir,
did not care much for the popular
Braunbier, which was the dark and
heavy brown beer. So, in the beginning
of the 17th century Maximilian I turned
the brewery’s focus onto wheat beers
and forbade all other private breweries
to brew wheat beer thus creating a
monopoly. In 1612, Heimeran Pongraz’
successor, Elias Pichler was under
pressure to brew a stronger beer
hence the Maibock.
WARSTEINER
Warstein,
Germany
Warsteiner
In 1753, farmer Antonius Cramer
was asked to pay beer tax for the first
time as his home brewing volumes
surpassed the volume allowed for
personal consumption. Little did he
know that his actions would kick-start
a long-standing brewing tradition in
Warstein – a small town located in
the middle of the beautiful Arnsberg
forest, in the heart of Germany’s Sauerland region. In 1803, Caspar Cramer
built the original building, the Warsteiner Domschänke – a small brewing
pub in the centre of the village. The
industrial revolution in the second half
of the nineteenth century provided
Warstein with some crucial transport
links, and when Albert Cramer Sr. became the family’s first brewmaster to
hold a diploma, the company’s future
as a modern, professional leader in
the brewing industry was sealed.
HACKER-PSCHORR
Munich, Germany
Oktoberfest Amber
Märzen
In the late 18th century, Joseph
Pschorr bought the Hacker brewery
from his father-in-law; he subsequently
founded a separate brewery under his
own name. His two sons divided his
estate by each taking control of one of
the two separate breweries. In 1972,
Hacker and Pschorr merged to form
Hacker-Pschorr, but the beers were
sold as separate brands well after
1975. When Crown Prince Ludwig I of
Bavaria was to celebrate his wedding
in Munich in 1810, he decided it
was an occasion for all of Bavaria to
celebrate. He commissioned Josef
Pschorr, the then brewmaster of the
Hacker-Pschorr brewery, among other
Munich brewers, to develop special
brews to commemorate the occasion.
SPATEN BREWERY
Munich, Germany
Spaten Oktoberfest
Spaten is one of Munich’s six major beer brands. Its beer
brewing history dates back to 1397
when a brewer named Hans Welser
set up a small brewery in central
Munich, originally named Welser
Prew. The ownership of the brewery
changed hands many times until 1807
when the royal Hofbräu brewmaster,
Gabriel Sedlmayr, took over the
brewery which had by then changed
name to Spatenbräu. At this time it
was Munich’s smallest brewery. The
still today used logo with a spade symbolising a malt shovel, bears Gabriel
Sedlmayr’s initials. Sedlmayr’s sons
continued to run the business and
in 1867 Spaten became the largest
brewery in Munich, as then measured
by malt use.
PAULNER
Munich, Germany
Paulner
Paulaner obtained
its name from the Italian monastic
order of St. Paola, which settled in
the heart of what is now Munich in
the early 17th century. During Lent,
the God-fearing brothers brewed a
rich and powerful strong beer which
served them as liquid bread: Paulaner
Salvator. The high quality and the outstanding taste of the Salvator, which
the monks sold to the population
of Munich for a small charge, soon
spread like wildfire. The secular brewers in Munich feared this competition.
Their letter of protest of 1634, which
is deemed the first documentary mention of Paulaner beers, was to prevent
public sale. The monks only received
an unlimited right of sale from the
Electoral Prince 150 years later. In
gratitude, the first mug of the strong
beer is given to the political leader
of Bavaria even now at the so-called
“Salvatorprobe” (Salvator tasting). At
the same time, this ceremony is the
WEIHENSTEPHAN
Freising, Germany
Weihenstephan’s
Festbier
Dating back to the year 1040 AD, Weihenstephan is the world’s oldest existing brewery. Based just outside Munich
in the town of Freising, Weihenstephan
brews in accordance with the German
Purity laws, using 100% local, Bavarian
ingredients. Numerous national and
international awards, including having
Beer Advocate’s highest-rated wheat
beers in the world, are testament to the
quality that is the hallmark of this iconic
German beer brand.

14TH STAR
BREWING
COMPANY
St. Albans, VT
Tribute Double IPA | Oktoberfest
The idea of 14th Star Brewery was
conceived on the battlefields of
Afghanistan and was born in Vermont
in May 2012. The brewery began in a
1200 square foot space that included a
tasting room. The initial brewing equipment was built from old maple sugaring
equipment. Significant growth in and
around Vermont necessitated a much
larger brewery and tasting room. On
Veterans Day, November 11th, 2015,
the new brewery located in a renovated
bowling alley, opened to the public.
While still under construction, the new
2,600 square foot tasting room contains
large windows that over look the brewhouse giving patrons the unique opportunity to view the brews they’ve come
to love being crafted. In the spring of
2015 a 90 barrel fermenter and bright
tank were added to accommodate the
growth canning has provided. Today,
four of 14th Star’s signature beers can
be found in cans throughout Vermont,
and in the near future, beyond. The
taproom contains 16 taps that offer
between 10 and 12 brews, 2 ciders
produced by Citizen Cider and 2 beers
poured on Nitro. The newest addition
of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches
has made 14th Star a destination in St.
Albans for beer lovers, near and far.

LAKE PLACID
BREWERY
Lake Placid, NY
UBU Ale | Black Tie
It began, like many microbreweries,
with a homebrew kit and a love of beer.
Not just a love of drinking beer but a
real respect for the craft, the history,
the art, and the industry, as well as a
passion for the brewing process itself.
Today, the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery
has been brewing award-winning ales
and lagers for more than 17 years and
has expanded rapidly due to its popularity and quality, earning the respect
of the brewing community and national
media attention. Over the years we
have brewed almost 80 different styles
of beer and we brew almost 350,000
pints of beer annually, placing us in the
top 7% of brewpubs nationwide.

was the inspiration for the Saranac
family of beers. In each bottle you can
taste our commitment to quality and
the patient attention to detail that has
been a signature of our brewery for
four generations. Here’s to another
125 years. Cheers.
FOUNDERS
BREWERY
Grand Rapids, MI
Imperial Stout |
Blushing Monk | Mosaic Promise
Founders Brewing Company started
in 1997 when college buddies Dave
Engbers and Mike Stevens teamed
up to brew beer together. After many
speed bumps in the beginning,
including bankruptcy in the early
2000’s, Founders has evolved into
one of the most highly regarded craft
breweries in the United States. All of
this is thanks to their dedicated fans,
employees, and one simple mission
statement: “We don’t brew beer for
the masses. Instead, our beers are
crafted for a chosen few, a small cadre
of renegades and rebels who enjoy a
beer that pushes the limits of what is
commonly accepted as taste. In short,
we make beer for people like us.”

TWO ROADS
BREWING
COMPANY
Stratford, CT
Ok2berfest
Two Roads isn’t just the logo on our
brewery building, it’s our philosophy.
Life always seems to offer up two
prefer the one less taken and having
some fun along the way – in our lives,
our careers and especially for our
beers! Now our “road less traveled”
philosophy is being brought to life in
the beers that we create and how we
create them.
SMUTTYNOSE
Hampton, NH
Vunderbar Pilsner |
Finestkind IPA | Octoberfest
For more than two decades, our
mission at Smuttynose has remained
simple: to brew the best beer we can
in a way we can be proud of. That
includes honoring New England’s rich
history of beermaking, respecting our
environment and playing an active role
in our community. We value creativity
and quality, authenticity and sustainability, but at the end of the day, it really
boils down to making great beers to
be enjoyed with family and friends. We
hope you love drinking our beers as
much as we love brewing them.
BROWNS
BREWING
CO.
Walloomsac, NY
Uncommon Porter | Cherry Rasberry
In 1993, Garry and Kelly Brown had
a vision to turn that abandoned 150
year-old warehouse on a then-blighted River Street in Troy into a fully
operational craft brewpub. Renovating
the space took three painstaking years
but the endeavor was well worth it as
Brown’s Brewing Company became an
instant success and continues to thrive
to this day. Today, Brown’s Taproom is
a social hub for the community and offers a menu that compliments the beer
brewed on site. Brown’s brew over
25 different styles of ales and lagers
throughout the year and serve ten or
more beers on tap at any one time.

THE ARCHWAY
Oktoberfest Vermont has partnered with Imhotep, a new Design/Build company
in Cornwall, and ReSOURCE VT, to create an entrance
arch to the inaugural event to be held on the waterfront
in downtown Burlington.
The concept for the arch developed during
a conversation between Lou DiMasi, founder
of Oktoberfest Vermont, and Jamie McKenna,
partner at Imhotep, following a men’s league
hockey game last winter. Putting their college
hockey rivalries aside (DiMasi played at Norwich, McKenna at Middlebury), the
two decided to collaborate to create a signature arch marking the entrance to the
festival on Lake Champlain. Resource VT donated 1800’s Vermont hand sewn
barn beams to Oktoberfest. McKenna and his partners, David Rossiter and Marcel Leduc, then turned the salvaged beams into a unique piece that will define the
Bavarian brew festival’s arrival to Vermont.
Imhotep is a Design/Build firm founded earlier this year with a goal to close
the gap that often exists between conceptual design and reality. The company
recently completed the new tasting room at Stonecutter Spirits in Middlebury and
will soon deliver a custom furniture order to an apartment in Manhattan. In the
coming weeks, Imhotep will be finishing a new build on Lake Dunmore and beginning the redesign and renovation of Otter Creek Brewery’s restaurant and tasting
room. To learn more about them, please visit www.ImhotepVermont.com.
FORK IN THE ROAD TOUR DAY
Fork in the Road is an extension of
Burlington School Food Project’s existing
hands-on gardening and cooking programs.
The heart of the mobile restaurant is a
culinary job training program that employs
students from both Burlington High School
and Burlington Technical Center. The food
truck is also integrated into academic
classes such as business and culinary arts.
Fork in the Road - Tour Day
On Tuesday, August 18th, Oktoberfest Vermont brought a group of Burlington
High School students from the Fork in the Road food truck on a tour of the
businesses that have graciously sponsored a benefit dinner in their honor. The
“Meet Your Maker’ dinner, a four-course meal featuring chef-brewer duos that
have paired the bounty of Vermont’s harvest with a pour of some of the finest
beer on the market, will take place on Thursday, September 24th.
The day started in Websterville with a guided tour of Vermont Creamery
by Matt Reese. Students watched as the various goats’ milk products were
processed, packaged, and stored - learning how a Vermont business has the
ability to reach across the country. We then traveled to Riverside Avenue in
Burlington to the friendly confines of Bluebird Barbecue. The group saw the
beginnings of a busy day in a high-volume kitchen as chef John whisked them
through the restaurant; teaching about daily preparation, storage of local vegetables & meats, and of course – Bluebird’s famous smoker! The group then headed
to downtown Burlington to tour Hotel Vermont & Juniper. Chef Doug guided the
students through the rustic, yet modern hotel, finishing with a visit to his state-ofthe-garden kitchen and a wonderful lunch! Students witnessed the pride Hotel VT
has in locally sourced furnishings, food, and décor. The last stop of the day was
at Hen of the Wood, where we met with Pastry Chef Laura and extracted sorbet
made from fresh blueberries. A walk through Hen’s open kitchen while cooks
prepared for dinner service provided the opportunity for the young food-lovers to
ask questions and learn about daily routines.
This tour was not only about educating young minds, but also associating a
face with the folks who will be contributing to the benefit dinner. Four stops at four
businesses that make a difference every day…especially today!
