The Winterfield
Witness
A bi-weekly publication of Winterfield United Methodist Church, Longview, Texas
February, 2011
Volume 136 Number 2
Go, Share God’s Love, help those in need, and make Disciples of Jesus Christ
As you know, the Church has undertaken a capital campaign to consider expansion of our
facilities. The purpose of the campaign is to determine the financial viability of the
Church to build a multi-purpose building on the Church grounds for use by the
congregation. The campaign is devoted to being inclusive of all congregants, and
transparent in the manner in which commitments are secured and decisions are made to
proceed with construction.
Please make note of the following important dates:
•
Saturday, January 29, 2011. Members of the Church are asked to pray to seek God’s guidance with regard to the
capital campaign. Certain members have volunteered to pray at all hours continuously throughout the day. In
addition, there will be weekly 30-minute prayer meetings on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM in the Open Forum Classroom
beginning on February 2. Please pray for God’s discernment.
•
Sunday afternoon, February 13, 2011. Members of the campaign committee will be making visits to you at your
home to deliver a packet of information concerning the capital campaign. Pledge cards will be contained in the
packet to be completed and delivered later. The package will be left on your door step if you and your family are
not present.
•
Sunday, February 20, 2011 and February 27, 2011. Sunday school classes are asked to participate in a
coordinated Bible based study to discuss God’s call for our church and the campaign. To prepare for the classes,
Sunday school leaders will receive information from the campaign committee.
•
Sunday, March 6, 2011. The Church will celebrate a church-wide event, with lunch following the late service.
Lunch will be provided, and we will engage in fellowship, with highlights of the capital campaign and God’s call
for Winterfield.
•
Sunday, April 10, 2011. Commitment Sunday. During the services, the congregation will be asked to deliver
commitment cards to the altar.
•
Sunday, April 17, 2011. First Fruits. A celebration honoring God’s provision for Winterfield will be held while
congregants bring their first fruits for the new building.
Following the Celebration of First Fruits, a final conference will be held to further discuss the matter and determine
viability of the project.
The Church asks that you stay in prayer regarding God’s will for the future of Winterfield, and that you
seek his guidance when considering your commitment. We desire that the members of the congregation
be informed of the progress of the campaign, and that in turn, the Body of Christ grows through our
commitment to carry out His will.

From the Heart!
Dear Winterfield Family,
Your loving prayers and support during the years of Joe
Van's illness (and before, of course) have sustained and held
us during the difficult days, and you have rejoiced with us on
the good days. Joe Van loved the church, the choir and
everyone at Winterfield. Thank you for all you have
done. Your cards and visits and prayers have made a
difficult journey easier.
You fed us physically and
spiritually, and we all thank you.
The Smitherman Family
Dear Christian Friends,
Thank you for your prayers, calls and cards I received
during my sister, Mary Williams illness and death. I
appreciate and love each and everyone of you.
In Christian Love, Jackie Chapman
NEW MEMBER WELCOME
A social will be held on February 6th at 9:15 til 9:45 so that all
of the church members can meet and greet our new members
to Winterfield. We will be serving snacks and drinks. The
Evangelism committee hopes that all members will put this
date on their calendars and plan to attend. We want each of
our new members to have a chance to meet everyone in the
church and made to feel at home.
•
Just a note...when the Pastor’s door is closed, please do
not go and look in to see who is in the office or bother
the Pastor when you know there is someone in the office
or if they are on the phone. Closed door meetings
should not be disturbed unless there is an emergency.
While most of these meetings may be church related,
some of these meeting could be counseling sessions and/
are private meetings that should be confidential. We ask
that you please consider and respect the privacy of
others that are in the office. Thank you.
•
Please contact Becky in the church office, before
scheduling any meetings, Sunday school social events,
etc.. in the church. This will save on any conflicts that
might arise.
•
Souper Bowl of Caring is a National event to raise
awareness of those in need of food. Each year
Longview Community Ministries participates in this
program to collect canned goods or money for our local
food panty. Last year, Winterfield won first place in the
church competition. We need your help in collecting as
many cans of food between now and Sunday, February
6th. Collection barrels are located around the church for
you to place them in.

A message from Rev. Rita Sims
“Welcome one another as Christ has
welcomed you.” (Rom. 15:7) This is the
admonition that the Apostle Paul gives us. I
hear from most people who visit at worship
that members have made them feel welcome. I also hear
reports from many of our new members that they feel
welcomed as well. Occasionally, however, I hear different
reports from our guests and new members. They do not feel
welcomed. Hebrews reminds us that we may miss a blessing
if we do not welcome strangers as it is stated, “Do not neglect
to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have
entertained angels without knowing it.” (Heb. 13:2) So, I
admonish and encourage you to welcome the ones that the
Lord sends our way and that we go out to get. After all, we
have decided with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and of the
scripture that Winterfield is called to, “Go, share God’s love,
help those in need and make disciples of Jesus Christ.”
Grace and Peace,

A STATEMENT OF SUPPORT
FOR THE NEW BUILDING
Winterfield has been our church home for all of our married
life. Mine since birth and Morgan's since he was a young
teen. We feel now is the time for all of us to step forward
and build to make our church the one God has used in the
past and will use in the future. With the new schools being
placed on our doorsteps, God has given us a new chance to
minister to the community as we have done the past 135
years. Our opportunity to once again step out on faith has
arrived. A 3-year financial commitment is what we feel God
has called us to do as a church to make the future of Winterfield a reality. We have come across many obstacles, yet we
know with faith and prayer God will once again see us
through.
