Viterra Double ExpellerPressed Canola Meal for
Poultry
Protein and an Energy Feed Ingredient
What is Double Expeller-Pressed Canola Meal?
Viterra Canola Processing uses a mechanical crushing process
that is termed double expeller-pressed. The seed is pressed
twice to extract oil rather than using solvent extraction to
extract the residual oil from the first press meal. The expellerpressed canola meal has a higher oil content which can range
from 9-11% and therefore has higher metabolizable, digestible
and net energy content than traditional pre-press solvent
extracted canola meal.
SOME KEY FEATURES OF
VITERRA CANOLA MEAL
PRACTICAL USE OF VITERRA
CANOLA MEAL IN POULTRY FEEDS
Viterra canola meal contains approximately 11% oil, compared to 3% in
conventional canola meal. This extra energy results in approximately 20% more
bio-available energy for animals, making canola meal one of the highest energy
protein ingredients available.
Viterra Canola Meal has wide application as a protein source in layer and turkey
feeds, which already usually use conventional canola meal. The high energy of
Viterra canola meal will provide an additional economic and nutritional benefit to
these feeds. As well, the high energy content provides special benefit in broiler
chicken feeds, where the use of conventional canola meal is usually limited due to
its lower energy content. Poultry feeds using Viterra canola meal will require less
supplemental fat and oil to meet dietary energy requirements.
Viterra canola meal contains 97% dry matter (compared to 88%-90% dry matter
for conventional canola meal), meaning that you are paying for nutrients, not
water. This provides some flexibility to feed formulators who are working with
some higher moisture feed ingredients. Also, even with the higher oil content,
Viterra canola meal contains almost as much protein as conventional canola meal
on an as is basis.
Canola meal is known for its excellent amino acid balance, with especially high
levels of methionine plus cystine and histidine. Viterra canola meal has the same
amino acid balance, with a slightly higher digestibility than conventional canola
meal. Viterra canola meal does not undergo the same toasting that conventional
canola meal undergoes. Since no solvents are used, no steam processing is
required. Viterra canola meal contains high levels of essential fatty acids,
specially linoleic acid. This means that adding linoleic acid (in the form of extra
oil) is not usually required when using Viterra canola meal.
Virtually all poultry feeds use supplemental fat (e.g. tallow), in order to supply energy
but some poultry feeds, most notably layer feeds, use supplemental vegetable oil in
addition to tallow, in order to supply essential fatty acids e.g. linoleic and linolenic
acid. Using Viterra canola meal means that supplemental vegetable oil will not be
required.
VITERRA CANOLA MEAL – BOTH A
PROTEIN AND AN ENERGY FEED
INGREDIENT
Viterra Canola Meal is a high quality feed protein source which is also an excellent
energy source.
- Suitable for feeding to all animals
- Excellent amino acid balance
- Its high oil content gives it one of the highest energy contents of all feed protein
ingredients
