Accessories
Our PXI and PCI product
ranges are fully supported by an
extensive range of breakouts,
cables and connectors that
are outlined in the Cable &
Connectors Map and Catalog. By
utilizing our connection solutions,
you are able to minimize the
time required to specify your test
system.
Pickering is a leading manufacturer of PXI switching modules. Offering the
widest range of PXI switching solutions available, over 1000 modules, we can
help you with your test and measurement requirements. We first entered the
PXI market in 1998 and now offer more PXI modules than our competitors
combined.
● Modules vary from our BRIC high density switching matrix, RF &
microwave, and optical switching products through to simple and
precision resistor switching networks for sensor emulation.
● All modules come with a standard 3-year warranty.
● We are a Sponsor Member of the PXI Systems Alliance.

Provides two or four channels of variable resistance based
on binary chains of resistors switched by reed relays. It is
controlled using relay bit patterns to set the resistance values.
It is ideal for lower density general purpose applications.

)
High performance three channel resistor module
designed for wide resistance range with very fine
setting resolution. Software control is easy as it uses
resistance calls in ohms rather than bit patterns. It
includes a calibration port on a separate connector.

Our PCI Cards are compatible with
Specification 2.0 of the PCI standard and
operate with a 33MHz 32-bit bus using
either +5V or universal signalling (see
individual card data sheets for details).

These instrument grade reed
relays feature SoftCenter® technology, ensuring long service life and
repeatable contact performance (for further information visit www.
pickeringrelay.com). In addition, most of our switch modules use
through-hole technology relays (as opposed to surface mount) allowing
easy replacement without the need for special tools.

Custom Resistors
)
Designed to provide a narrow resistance range with
high channel count and very high performance levels.
Intended specifically for RTD simulation applications,
with builds aimed at PT100 and PT1000, they provide
a simulation range of -25°C to +410°C. Through use
of resistance calls, values can easily be adapted by
the user into temperature settings corresponding to
the required RTD device. The 40-262 and 50-262
both have separate calibration ports.
)
Suited to applications were speed of operation is more critical
than accuracy, they use relay patterns or resistance calls
for control and are ideal for real time applications. They are
based on reed relays that have higher thermo-electric EMF
values than electro-mechanical relays, and a higher contact
resistance which leads to a higher residual path resistance.
Simulator
)
)
Designed specifically for strain gauge simulation,
the 40-265 and 50-265 include a resistance bridge
circuit and excitation system. Available with Bridge
Impedances of 350Ω, 1kΩ, 1.5kΩ, 2kΩ and 3kΩ, the
resistance control range is very small and has very
fine resolution, allowing the emulation of small strain
levels. They also have separate calibration ports.

Selectable Resistors
This two channel module is similar to 40-260 but
has a much lower bottom end resistance value. The
design is optimized for high performance applications
requiring low as well as high resistance settings.
It uses a resistance call to set its value and has a
separate calibration port.
Based on the same architecture as the 40-295 and 50-295A,
the 40-296 and 50-296 have adjacent channels internally
linked to provide the user with a potentiometer emulation.
Our PXI module and PCI card
drivers are compatible with all popular
software: Windows® 10/8/7/Vista/

C/C++), LabVIEW™, LabVIEW

)
Similar architecture to the 40-293/50-293 but using Pickering
Reed Relays giving fast operation time and long service Life.
In addition to offering two or four resistor channels the design
includes the option of 8xSPST relays which can be used
for general purpose switching applications or for inserting
additional components into the resistor chains.

A common driver and software package ensures programs can be exchanged
with minimal effort between the PCI and PXI platforms.
Ideal for Sensor Emulation
)
Offers a lower cost alternative with lower accuracy than the
40-297/50-297. In addition to offering two or four resistor
channels the design includes the option of 8xSPDT relays
which can be used for general purpose switching applications
or for inserting additional components into the resistor chains.
A test system may not require a large number of switching or instrumentation modules or the need for a PXI
or LXI chassis. In these cases a PCI switch card may provide a low cost solution that is perfectly adequate. In
some cases full length PCI cards can be used that offer more capacity than their PXI equivalents, the complexity
limitation usually being the connector space on the card’s panel.
Our PCI cards are built using the same basic technology as our acclaimed PXI module range, utilizing the same
software drivers, soft front panels and control electronics. They are 100% software compatible allowing users to
migrate from PXI to PCI or from PCI to PXI as required by the application.
Our range of PCI cards includes:
● Programmable and Precision
● General Purpose Relay
Resistors
● Matrices including High Density & RF
● Relay Drivers and Digital I/O
● Multiplexers including High Voltage
● Function Generators

Pickering’s Resistor Map is a single sheet reference to our range of over 160 PXI Resistor Modules
and range of over 150 PCI Resistor cards, including their basic specifications and cabling options.
For applications where accuracy is important but
the accuracy levels of the precision range are not
required. Control is by resistance calls and the closest
setting to the required value is calculated by the
use of calibration information stored on-board. Both
PXI and PCI versions have excellent accuracy and
temperature stability.

Offset resistors are included and the module can also be set

Generally 100mW for precision programmable resistors and up to 1W for
standard programmable resistors.
We also offer a PXI programmable load module with up to 15W power
handling (40-292).
Minimum Resistance Value
The lower the minimum resistance value required the greater the errors
caused by relay contact resistance and copper trace losses.
Generally, modules and cards with a low minimum resistance do not have as
wide a range of resistance values as those with higher minimum resistances.
Accuracy
High accuracy requires careful design to ensure low loss paths,
management of thermoelectric EMF and the use of higher stability resistors
Calibration Port
A calibration port allows the user to check the resistor channel without
having to disconnect the front panel connector. It can be used to connect
any of the resistor channels to a DMM to perform an accurate four terminal
measurement.
Custom Programmable Resistors
If the desired accuracy, precision, range, number of channel, power
handling, etc is not available then please contact your local sales office to
discuss your application. We are often able to configure custom builds or
even design a new version of a PXI/PCI model.
Our entire range of resistor modules and cards use real resistors, they do not use
current loads or other electronic means to control the resistance value. Therefore
they behave in exactly the same way as a real resistor.

Resistance f or PT1000 RTD ( Ω)
In their simplest form, our programmable resistors consist of a basic chain of
resistance values switched in or out of circuit with reed relays, electro-mechanical
relays or solid state switches. We also offer multi-channel programmable resistors
with very fine value adjustment and high accuracy including programmable resistive
bridges for strain gauge emulation.
IN
Resistance f or PT100 RTD ( Ω)
A Programmable Resistor is designed to emulate the use of resistive sensors and
variable resistors in systems when testing devices such as engine controllers.
Provides an array of switched fixed value resistors. Each
resistor can be set in-circuit, open circuit, or short circuit. This
module is a good choice where you simply need to have a
few fixed values rather than a variable resistor. The resistors
can either be fitted by the user or we can load the values
required.
Isolation
● Load Cell Simulation
The most common implementation is by using Strain Gauges. Programmable resistors
in a wheatstone bridge arrangement can be used to simulate an applied force.
● Pressure Sensor Simulation
For the simulation of pressure senders in mechanical systems or barometric pressure
sensors in applications such as altimeters in the aerospace industry.
● Select on Test Resistance
A programmable resistor can be used in a test environment where a component's
value is optimized at the production test stage.
