2008 Annual Report - National Aquarium
Dear Friends,
When the National Aquarium began taking shape on Pier 3 in the
1970s, Baltimore had never seen anything like it, and once it opened
the city’s historic harbor would never be the same. In the same way, our
extensive renovation of the National Aquarium in Washington, DC
opens up new opportunities for visitors to connect with nature in our
nation’s capital.
Together, the two National Aquarium locations have offered millions
of visitors transforming experiences that inspire them to enjoy, respect
and protect the aquatic world. Actions follow experiences that change
our thinking. For some, seeing the Chesapeake Bay for the first time
through a school field experience is a catalyst. For others, getting faceto-face with the Aquariums’ amazing animals, or attending a thoughtprovoking lecture will challenge ideas and change perspectives.
In this year’s annual report, we asked some friends and associates to share
how transforming experiences with the National Aquarium have changed
lives, actions, behaviors and results. We also celebrate exciting
accomplishments in education, exhibits, conservation and outreach.

Experiences
As a friend of the National Aquarium, your involvement truly makes a
difference to the programs we offer, the exhibits we create, the animals we
care for and ultimately the lives of the people who connect with nature
through the National Aquarium. If reading these stories inspires you, I
invite you to inspire others by sharing your own transforming experiences
on the Aquarium’s blog at nationalaquarium.wordpress.com. We are
grateful for your continued support.
Thank you.

I’ve spent my life in Baltimore and the community has been good to me and
my family. I’ve been involved with the Aquarium since the beginning because
I believed it would be an important educational experience for visitors and an
economic engine for our city. Over 25 years later, that is still true; its ongoing
success and importance has sustained my commitment.
My work with the Aquarium has enabled me to give something back. I feel a
great sense of pride that I had a part in bringing the Aquarium into the lives
of millions of people, and providing a very special place—especially for the
citizens of Baltimore and Maryland. The incredible diversity of life under the
sea is astounding; I had no idea of its scope. I realize now just how meager our
knowledge has been and how much more we need to learn. We need to keep
making our education and conservation programs better than ever, especially
for the children in Baltimore whose lives can be transformed through visits
and participation in activities.
The Aquarium should never stop
thinking about what’s next—the future
of the environment depends upon it.

National Aquarium ANNUAL REPORT 2008
Leslie Landsman
Manager of Volunteer Programs, National Aquarium, Baltimore, MD
We have nearly 800 volunteers and each of them brings separate experiences,
perspectives and skills to the National Aquarium. Many of our volunteers have
had long careers as teachers and bring their skill in engaging instruction. Some
volunteer because of the opportunities to work behind the scenes with exotic
animals and plants. Some of our volunteers are in high school, and as they are
mentored by experienced volunteers, I see them transform from being shy
to eagerly interacting with our visitors. Some of our volunteers stay only briefly,
but many others have been with us for years, or decades—19 of whom have
been continuously active since before we opened!
One thing they all share is real passion for our animals, for the programs we
offer and for the mission we work toward. Our volunteers are a big part of
giving our visitors transforming experiences. They’re everywhere, as exhibit
guides, divers, horticulturists and others—in fact, on any given day there are
60-70 volunteers working at the National Aquarium.
Those transforming experiences happen in other ways too. Through my
years at the Aquarium I’ve watched our volunteers’ lives change through their
involvement. They gain new skills and try new things. Countless friendships
have been formed and many life-long relationships, including marriages,
have begun here.
Our volunteers give their time to make
a difference, and their time here makes a
difference for them too. I’m rewarded every
day by their dedication.
Milestones
EVENTFUL YEAR
By day and by night, the Aquarium offers entertaining experiences
amidst naturalistic habitats. During more than 192 private and
corporate catered events in 2008, visitors had the opportunity to
tour exhibits while reconnecting with family, friends, clients and
colleagues. The Aquarium’s world of water enhanced the magic
for six weddings!
OCEANS OF INSPIRATION
In 2008, the National Aquarium adopted a fundraising approach
has transformed the approach to philanthropic giving. Beginning
with one-hour “Oceans of Inspiration” sessions, people are
introduced to the Aquarium’s mission. Throughout the year, 160
individuals pledged more than $340,000 in support or committed
in-kind goods or services.
CITY VOTE OF SUPPORT
A record number—76 percent—of Baltimore City voters supported
the Aquarium during the November 2008 election by voting in
favor of the Question L bond issue. That high level of approval
provided a much-needed $500,000 in bond funds for critical life
support upgrades. This support enables the Aquarium to maintain
and upgrade an aging infrastructure and continues a legacy of city
involvement that began with its first bond referendum in 1976.
INVALUABLE VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers continued to play an invaluable role in the life of
the Aquarium in 2008. Nearly 800 individuals contributed
110,000 hours with a total value of almost $2.2 million. Almost
as surprising as the depth of volunteer dedication is the variety of
their demographics. Volunteers range in age from 14 to 90 and
hail from the Baltimore region, as well as Maryland and 12 other
states; including Kansas, Michigan and Georgia.
GRASSROOTS EFFORT
The Aquarium community continued its grassroots efforts to transform
the bay. More than 650 volunteers contributed 3,816 hours to
restore 28 acres of wetlands, sand dunes and trees. They planted
almost 160,000 grasses, trees and shrubs (one million since 1999),
and removed 56,000 pieces of debris. To date, these environmental
stewards have saved 107 acres of precious local habitats.
LIFETIME SERVICE
For her significant contribution to the field of aquatic animal
clinical technology, Director of Laboratory Services Jill Arnold
received the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians Lifetime
Service Award in 2008. Arnold has published papers, presented
at conferences and completed her master’s thesis on the
hematology of the sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus,
during her 25-year career with the Aquarium.

My favorite place on earth is Australia. Some of the most fascinating,
beautiful and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had were on trips to the
Outback. It is unique, weird and wonderful, and everything that flies,
crawls, or walks is trying to kill you. But in one important way, it’s just
like everywhere else in the world—water changes the environment and
the lives of the animals and people who depend on it.
For years, I believed the axiom that first you learn, then you care and
then you act. You have to learn that there are over 300 species of
sharks. Otherwise, you won’t know enough. And if you don’t know
enough, you won’t care. And if you don’t care, you won’t act. But
research is showing us that’s not necessarily the chain of events, and
at the Aquarium we’ve been inspired to think in new ways about
our visitors. You don’t have to learn everything about an ecosystem
in order to care about it. What if you’re taken directly to the action
part—“Let’s plant trees!” You’re out there digging and planting.
You’re making an emotional connection because you’re getting your
hands in the dirt and really feeling something.
Curator of Australian Exhibits, National Aquarium, Baltimore, MD
The Aquarium’s award-winning Australia exhibit is all about the
story of water. When you visit the exhibit, you see evolutionary
characteristics that can be seen in other parts of the world. The
geological effects of rain, flood, heat and drought are similar, but
the lessons are the same. The environment is very fragile. We must
learn and understand its dynamics to appreciate how water, plants,
animals and people are all interrelated, and how water contributes
to our very existence. I want people who see the Australia exhibit
to experience the intricacies of nature. I want them to think about
how the environment shapes our lives, whether we live in the
Australian Outback, the savannahs of Nairobi or the watershed
of the Chesapeake Bay.
Only when we treasure our environment
can we use it wisely.

National Aquarium ANNUAL REPORT 2008
Senior Director of Visitor Experiences, National Aquarium, Baltimore, MD
At the Aquarium, we have these amazing live animals. People come
in and say, “That’s so cool!” And we’re right there to reply, “There
are things you can do to make sure animals like these
are always here.” One action isn’t going to do it but
it’s a start.
We want to provide transforming
experiences that spark action and drive
people to make conservation part
of their daily actions.
Milestones
AUSTRALIA ACCOLADES
For the first time in its history, the National Aquarium was the
recipient of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ prestigious Best
New Exhibit Award for Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes.
This highly competitive award recognizes excellence in live animal
displays and exhibit design. A committee of peers from accredited
zoos and aquariums selected Australia, calling it “an example of
outstanding achievement.”
CULTURAL CONNECTIONS
The beat of drums, the swish of grass skirts, and the magic of
puppetry launched the National Aquarium’s first Cultural Series,
scheduled during Fridays after Five reduced admission nights.
Programs on Native American and Asian-Pacific heritage, worldwide
holiday traditions and black and women’s history celebrated the
diversity of the community and showcased connections to Aquarium
exhibits. Almost 10,000 people participated!
4-D PHENOMENON
Launched in December 2007, the highly successful 4-D Immersion
Theater came into its own in 2008. Part of Aquarium efforts to grow
multi-sensory, experiential opportunities, the Immersion Theater also
grew revenue, repeat visitation, and shared memories. Nearly 38
percent of visitors enjoyed the holiday classic The Polar Express—
a notable increase over goals. To date, Planet Earth: Shallow Seas
continues to captivate audiences.
NAMING “BAYLEY”
The birth of a dolphin is always a cause for celebration! The public
was invited to name the calf, born on July 27, and the response was
overwhelming. Local residents cast more than 22,500 votes via text
messages and the Aquarium and WBAL-TV websites to select a winning
name for the newborn. “Bayley,” named in reference to her mother,
Chesapeake, is the 10th successful dolphin birth at the Aquarium.
AQUA WEB 2.0
To strengthen current relationships and develop new ones, the
National Aquarium launched new internet and social media
initiatives in 2008. Consumers can access the aquatic world via a
blog, Waterlog, visit favorites on Facebook, participate in photo
contests on Flickr, or follow the Aquarium on Twitter. AquaMail, an
e-communications program, encourages visitors to participate in
conservation activities.
RECORD GIVING
In 2008, the Aquarium set a record for restricted, or targeted, grants.
Donors generously pledged $1,165,000 in support for myriad
programs, including Chesapeake Bay initiatives and the Henry Hall
Scholarships, funded numerous Aquarium endowments and answered
needs for free school visits and equipment.

Behaviors
Melanie Clark
Visitor Programs Interpretive Specialist, National Aquarium, Baltimore, MD
Some of my favorite memories of the Aquarium are of coming here as a
teenager in high school and learning about marine biology. I remember feeling
special because we were in the building when no one else was. It was quiet and
dark. I remember the sound of the bubble tubes and the music that played in
the Atlantic Coral Reef exhibit. I often wonder how it happened, how I was so
fortunate to be able to do all the things I have done.
The Aquarium programs that I have been a part of exposed me to things I
might have never seen. In my third year participating in the Aquarium on Wheels
program, I assisted the instructors of a Sea Turtle Watch program in South
Carolina. Then I spent six months in the Pacific Northwest learning marine
science. Now I interpret animals and exhibits for visitors to the Aquarium.
People are often amazed that I can hold a snake. (So am I, actually!) I feel
like my experiences at the Aquarium have given me a great respect for the
environment.
I’ve also learned that your
environment is not your limit—whatever
you want to do, you can do.

Education
Tiena Miller
Fifth grade teacher, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Baltimore, MD
Participant, National Aquarium AquaPartners program
‘Nature belongs to everyone!’ When I heard my students at Thomas Jefferson
use these words to encourage classmates to join our Nature Club, it gave me a
very good feeling. My participation in the AquaPartners program has taught me
so much about the Chesapeake Bay. It’s given me a better appreciation for the
interconnectedness of animals and all parts of nature. Once students realize
that nature belongs to all of us, they understand it’s up to all of us to preserve
what is around us. Everything we do has an effect which can be positive or
negative. Being involved with the National Aquarium and the AquaPartners
program helps me get this message across. We recycle at my school now. Many
students are recycling and conserving energy at home. This summer I plan to
begin my own native garden!
This experience has
empowered me to be
a better science teacher.
AQUAPARTNERS SUCCESS
In 2008, more than 1,200 students and teachers at
11 Baltimore City elementary schools gained a greater
understanding and appreciation of the Chesapeake Bay
through the innovative AquaPartners program. Supported
by a generous grant from Toyota USA Foundation, students
enjoyed classroom activities and field trips, learned about
recycling and proper trash disposal, stenciled storm drains
and planted grasses.
MILESTONE RESCUES
The Marine Animal Rescue Program celebrated its 80th
release, when “Secca,” a rehabilitated harbor seal, was
returned to the waters off Ocean City, Maryland. More than
120 people gathered to witness this milestone and hundreds
more followed the marine mammal’s 1600-mile migration
via the Aquarium’s website. Also rescued or rehabilitated in
2008 were rare loggerhead and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles.
SCHOOL NEWS
More than 169,000 students and teachers from the U.S.
visited the Aquarium on field trips during the 2007-2008
school year. Of those, 70,000 were from Maryland
representing. These visitors from 842 local schools received
almost 1,200 free field trips through a grant from the
Maryland State Department of Education. New this year:
online surveys enabled students and their teachers to offer
feedback, learn about careers and take a closer look at the
aquatic world.
SHARK STUDIES
Aquarium staff continued to share the results of their
research and husbandry expertise in 2008. Results of Alan
Henningsen’s long-term investigation of the relationship
between steroid hormones and behavior in male sand tiger
sharks were published in Fish Physiology and Biochemistry.
Publication of Kat Hadfield’s study on the potential use
of blood transfusions in sharks and rays is scheduled for
Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine.
YEAR OF THE FROG
In 2008, the Aquarium participated in worldwide efforts to
help save more than 6,000 species of amphibians—about
one-third of which are at risk of extinction. The successful
changing exhibit, Frogs! A Chorus of Colors, along with
themed programs and a Marjorie Lynn Bank Lecture by Jack
Cover and George Grall, raised awareness of and funds for
amphibian conservation. It was a leap year forward.

Teamwork
Andy Dehart
Director of Biological Programs, National Aquarium, Washington, DC
When the National Aquariums in Baltimore and Washington partnered
in 2004, the DC facility had gone 75 years with very little support and
renovation. I jumped at the chance to put my skills to work in Washington,
determined to turn the facility around. What I learned was that you can be
an extremely determined individual but without the partnership, help and
support of a great team, you just can’t pull it off.
We want to engage our visitors in a
conversation. Our exhibits have amazing
stories to tell, and so does our staff!
We had initial funding to renovate only 20 exhibits. But in partnership
with husbandry and exhibit design colleagues in Baltimore we renovated
55 of the 66 exhibits, and more than 70 percent of the work was done inhouse. We were able to stretch our budget because we were doing so much
ourselves and learning along the way. The DC-based team was pushing
the envelope on what they were comfortable with, so they got to grow as
aquarists and husbandry staff. A strong team makes anything possible.
Our Washington facility has a lot of small specimens, but even small fish
have big stories, and the new theme of America’s Aquatic Treasures really
strikes a chord. These amazing animals exist in our national waters—what
you do in your backyard affects your whole watershed.
Milestones
EXTENSIVE MAKEOVER
In 2008, the National Aquarium celebrated the conclusion
of the five-year renovation of the Washington, DC facility.
Partnership with the National Aquarium in Baltimore and
a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration enabled the Aquarium to transform exhibits,
expand educational programming and improve visitor
experiences. America’s Aquatic Treasures now showcases
the wonders of U.S. marine sanctuaries.
INDIAN HEAD RESTORATION
Through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense,
the Aquarium made significant strides toward restoring
an eight-acre coastal riparian buffer along the Potomac
River. Work took place in two waves. In July, 32 volunteers
from the community, the U.S. Navy, and like-minded
organizations dedicated 223 hours to planting 10,000
wetland grasses. In October, 53 volunteers contributed 654
hours planting 1,400 trees and shrubs. The sum total: a
positive impact on the aquatic ecosystem.
BAHAMAS SUMMIT
As part of its Coral Reef Conservation effort, the National
Aquariums in Washington, DC and Baltimore co-hosted the
Bahamas Marine Conservation Summit. Participants drafted
an action plan for a two-year cooperative conservation
strategy. Conservation partners included aquariums,
universities and biological parks; among others committed
to protecting these fragile marine ecosystems.
CONSERVATION CONTINUUM
A restructured Internal Conservation Committee took up
the cause with renewed energy in 2008. Aquarium staff
recycled 65 tons of plastic, glass, aluminum, “technotrash”
and paper, reused or repurposed office supplies and
purchased eco-friendly products. Some staff used a paid
conservation day to participate in clean-ups, while others
commuted by bike or bus. Investing in the environment
became a routine of the work day.
MOMENTUM AWARD
The National Aquarium in Washington, DC received
the Downtown DC Business Improvement District’s 2008
Momentum Award. The Aquarium was recognized
by business leaders for its contribution to making the
Downtown DC experience “vibrant, inviting and smart,”
and for the re-establishment of the venue as a first-rate
attraction among the many treasures in DC.
