A Letter from WARHAWK 1
THE RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
Hello,
My name is Warhawk 1. I wanted to share
with you some facts about real Redshouldered Hawks. I get my name from
my feathers. I have reddish feathers on
the fronts of my wings and across my
chest . Black and white bands of feathers
cover the rest of my wings and tail.
I live in the woods. Soaring high over the
trees, I call, “Keeyar, Keeyar, Keeyar.” This
tells other hawks that this is my home.
Hawks are predators because they eat
other animals. These animals are called
prey. My favorite foods are: mice,
squirrels, snakes, and lizards.
I have good eyes, and I can see a squirrel hiding in a tree. Swooping down,
I use my sharp talons at the ends of my strong toes to help me catch the
squirrel. My powerful beak comes in handy for eating it.
I am an important part of the environment as I patrol the forests near ULM.
If I did not catch and eat squirrels and other rodents, there would be too
many of these animals. I help keep nature in balance.
I want you to remember this fact. It is against the law to harm any hawk in
the wild.
Let’s be friends.
Your Pal,
Warhawk 1

Sandal Hall is the first stop for all
students. Students can find out about
ULM at the Admissions Office. Students
can purchase Warhawk gear in the
bookstore with my picture on it! Or they
can go upstairs to the third floor to one of
my favorite places, the Museum of
Natural History.
Can you name some of the animals that biology
students study at the Museum of Natural History
after you fill in the first letter of their name?

My favorite animal to learn about is the hawk
because I am a Red-shouldered Hawk. Can you
help me by circling foods that would be good for a
hawk to eat?
Our next stop is the ULM
Library (building #28). Can
you draw a line from me to
the library?

Help Ace Keep ULM Clean!
It has been a great adventure at ULM. Remember the
interesting places that you have explored.
The students and teachers at ULM are proud of their clean
campus and they want you to help keep it that way.
Do you know where litter likes to live?
I bet you already know the
answer.
Litter likes to live in a trashcan. So make your litter
happy and put it where it
belongs.
Don’t put litter down.
Put litter in the
trashcan.
Thanks for exploring
ULM.
Warhawk 1 and I want
you to come back soon.
