THE EAGLE EYE
Official Newsletter of the Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby Football Club (Inc)
From the chair
The 2012 season is well underway and the
Premiers are building on a very promising
year in 2011. Matt Lee has continued as
coach and has been joined, following
Adam Campbell’s retirement, by Colt’s
coach from last year Justin Wilson. The
squad from 2011 was largely maintained
and their performances thus far have
been admirable. They have retained
the Spillane Trophy for the 3rd year in a
row and have also added the Wood Cup
(OBU),the McBain Shield and the Father
Cleary Trophy to the trophy cabinet!
However it’s a long season and the players
and management know that resources
will have to be carefully managed to
ensure that the ultimate prize the Jubilee
Cup is secured. We have the players to
do it – but as we know it’s a very elusive
trophy – maybe 2012 could be our year?
The Senior 1sts have had a significant
change in personnel and are a relatively
inexperienced side. A first up loss
however was followed by a win over
Johnsonville. Last week a 1 point win over
Petone was followed by a disappointing
1 point loss to Marist St Pats after a very
handy lead was blown. However this
side, coached by Adrian Maney and Brett
Marais, and assisted by Filipe Rayasi
certainly has the talent to make the top
four and contest the Hardham Cup again.
The Senior 2nds and 3rds are also
showing that they are very capable sides
and we can expect some good results
from them. However to demonstrate how
injuries can impact – the Senior 2nds lost
7 players from their game against Petone
– showing how important that player
depth in a club can be.
The Colts have had notched up
impressive wins against Maris St Pats and
Petone and look a side to be reckoned
with this season.
On a disappointing note the club has
lost one of its 85/85 teams as a number
of the key players in The Robots have
retired and the club has also been unable
to field enough players to field a second
Colt’s side. It is imperative that we field
one of these teams in 2013 to maintain
the momentum gained over the past
5 seasons. The Howlers 85/85 side is
consequently bursting with players and
hopefully will be competitive again after
picking up the 3rd Division title in 2011.
The Club’s gymnasium has been
completely refitted as a ‘cross-fit’ training
facility (if you don’t know what this is
check the internet) – and thanks goes to
Danny Pavihi for his drive and initiative in
making this happen.
The new conference/debriefing room
adjacent to the cross-fit gymnasium will
soon be fitted out as a first class video
analysis facility thanks to the funding
raised from our annual golf tournament
held at Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf
Course on Friday 27th April. Thanks go
to Peter McGuinness, Paddy Wells, Kevin
Melville and Megan Bailey for some
sterling organization which saw record
team entries and hole sponsorship.
More recent good news with the naming
of Ope Peleseuma in the New Zealand
Under 20s team for 2012 IRB Junior World
Championship. The tournament this year
is in South Africa from June 4 - June 22.
Ope has made an outstanding return to
rugby this season after 2011 was written
off with a knee injury. While Ope’s talents
on the field are there for all to see, his
attitude, humility and work ethic off the
field also stand out. Congratulations to
Ope and his family!
Recently Taleta Tupuola and Parataiso
Silafai-Lea’ana received their blazers for
40 Premier appearances and shortly to
follow is Tupeni Kamakorewa and Alexis
Time will reached his milestone 100
games for the Premiers in the North’s
game. Nick Risdon made his 150th
appearance for the Prems against Marist
St Pats – congratulations to all these
marvellous stalwarts of The Eagles!
2012 looks to be another great season
for the club overall – but the challenge of
recruiting and retaining players, coaches,
managers and committee members is
ongoing. This club will only continue to
prosper provided volunteers keep putting
their hands up. We have been fortunate to
have been served by some great people
over the past 10 years but we need to be
planning on their succession. So if you
are interested in being part of the new
vanguard – lets be hearing from you!

2012 Spillane Cup
2012 saw another successful year for the
Hutt Old Boy’s Marist Eagles at Spillane.
Crowned for the 3rd straight year, and for
the 4th time in the last 5 years, the best
Marist Club in the country. The club is
starting to build a Spillane dynasty similar
to that of Michael Jordan’s Bulls through
the 90’s.
The trip started with both the Premiers
and Colts piling on to the bus at Eagles
HQ on Myrtle Street at 5pm Friday the
9th of March. The colts had a whole host
of new faces while there were fewer for
the premiers they did welcome back two
of their favorite sons Jason Risdon and
Matthew ‘Warrick’ Time. The bus trip up
was saw no real excitement with the only
real highlight being when Matt ‘Warrick’
Time got his camera out to catch images
of the boys on the bus ride up.
The bus pulled into The Devon Hotel
in New Plymouth at approximately
midnight. With two big games the next
day it was thought this could have been
planned a bit better, never the less the
boys went to bed without argument.
The boys woke the next morning with
a real feeling of excitement that only
Spillane can bring. It signals the start of
the rugby season and now it was about
playing for the team. First to play were the
colts. They played the host club Tukapa.
Although the premieres were unable
to get there for the first half, we were
informed by all accounts it was a hard
fought first 40 with the Eagles leading
7--3 at the break. The second half saw
the game open up and HOBM

showed their class running in several
tries to finish the game victors by 32--3.
2:30 saw kick off between the premiers
and the finalists from the 2011 Spillane,
Napier Marist. In the early exchanges
the only points scored were through
penalties. With Brandon Larsen knocking
over some very long range shots. After
the goal kicking issues the premiers
have had in the past, this provided a
very promising start. The game itself
was messy during the early exchanges
with a lot of runners finding themselves
isolated. As the half went on this got
better and Hutt were able to string
several phases together until Matt Time
crashed over to take the Eagles to a 16-6
halftime lead.
The second half started where the Eagles
had finished the first. The forwards
worked together to provide the backline
quick, clean ball, from both set piece and
phase play. With this the backs were to
cause all sorts of issues for the Napier
defense. With more ball, better ball, Hutt
were able to lay on 3 more tries in second
half and that could have been more if
some weren’t shelled over the try line.
Napier scored a consolation try from a
lucky intercept but bar that the Eagles’
defense stayed strong and proved far too
powerful for our Hawkes Bay neighbors
running out winners 35--14.
The Saturday night saw the Eagles
down at the Tukapa club rooms to
enjoy themselves. There was a really
good feeling amongst the group and
it got even better when we found out
both our captain Jason Risdon and
nning team
HOBM Spillane wi
Ope Peleseuma had been named in the
tournament team following the days play.
On further discussion with Jason, he
noted it was even better because his
brother Nick Risdon (HOBM superstar
unable to make the trip this year) was
filthy having never been able to attain
the coveted Marist jersey after countless
Spillane’s’. Jason making the tournament
team at only his second tournament. The
boys really got into the Spillane spirit as
was noted by the Tukapa Rugby Club
who were very impressed we stayed at
the club after all others cleared off the
moment the prizes had been given out.
As the night wore on the Premiers found
their way back their bedrooms with
the Colts heading off to enjoy the New
Plymouth nightlife.
The game started
the same way Day
1 had finished with
the Eagles backline
again able to
cut through the
defence at will.
The fans were
rewarded early
with a great
opening try to
Lake Maneia who
by all accounts
had a fantastic
Spillane debut.
Hutt were then called
upon to defend for long periods of the
first half that saw MSP turn down shots
at goal to go for the try. This proved to
be a big mistake, with MSP hot on attack,
Parataiso Silafai-Leaanaa picked up a
loose ball and against the run of play
raced away. He was caught with about
20 meters to go but was able to link up
with Kahu Tamatea to score Hutt’s second
of the afternoon. HOBM followed this up
with another attacking raid late in the half
resulting in the ball finding its way into
the hands of Hutt’s outstanding captain
Jason Risdon. Rizzy junior used his much
talked about show and go to slip through
the MSP defence and score the Eagles
third.
Hutt went into the break with their tails
up and a 17--0 lead. As we all knew 17
points was not a huge lead. One only has
to think back to last year’s Swindale Shield
game at Evans Bay to remember how easy
it was for MSP to come back from that
deficit.
With MSP making a few changes at
the half, they came out firing and
immediately had Hutt on the back foot.
No longer were they using their backs
and looked to hold on to the ball for long
phases with their forwards. Early in the
second half MSP were able to drive over
from a lineout taking the score to 17--7.
Hutt responded quickly with a penalty to
take the lead to 20--7 heading into the
final 30 minutes of the match. This would
prove to be the last points Hutt would
score in the match and the last time they
entered the MSP 22. The final half hour
of the game saw Hutt stuck on their line
making tackle after tackle to hold MSP
out. Matt and Justin emptied their bench
and everyone who came on contributed
to a stoic defensive effort that MSP could
not break.
Throughout the two games Hutt made
bad decisions and fitness was at times
notably not where it should be. It needs
to be remembered that there are still
combinations to work out and that it is
only the second and third time this side
has played together. The spirit shown is
what should strike fear into most of the
opponents that will play the Eagles this
year. Their ability to play for one another
and for the jersey, the constant pressure
they were able to take and then turn it
around at the other end.
This Spillane tournament has shown we
can all look forward to (touch wood) a
very successful year at Myrtle Street.
HOBM Captain Jason Risdon

The next morning saw only two members
of the Premier squad wake up a bit
worse for wear in Greg Hooper and Alan
Ormond. They had pub crawled their
way home from Tukapa to make sure they
picked up all the players.... as well as the
entire Colts side. One of the colts’ players
particularly put the boat out the night
before not arriving back to the hotel until
9am. The colts had left for their game at
8:15am.
The premiers made their way to the
grounds a bit later and found the Colts
were unable to back up from their big
night before and went down heavily to
Auckland Marist. This may go down as
a learning curve for a lot of the younger
colts that it is indeed very difficult to play
your best rugby while alcohol is trying to
pore out of your system.
With Alan and Greg resigned to the bench
for the big match there would be no
hangovers to excuse the premier’s from

Recently club stalwart Alexis Time was
hosted at a mayoral reception. Wife
Rachelle and children, Oakley and
Adelia, were in attendance as Mayor
Wallace presented Alexis with a bravery
citation.
Over the Christmas period, Alexis
rushed to the aid of a man who had been
trapped under a car.
Alexis, with the help of two others, was
able to lift the car off the man and free
him. Well done Lexus! Great to see
Eagles representing the club and family
in this way!

HOBM were also proud to host local secondary schools for the
HOPE rugby tournament. Eight local colleges fielded teams
in this round-robin tournament spanning two days on 18th
and 19th of April. The tournament was really well run with
HIBS winning the final over St Pats Silverstream 2nd XV. St
Bernard’s beat Upper Hutt to claim third place.
It was also great to see the HURRICANES hold a public
training at the Hutt Rec on Thursday. With school holidays
coming to an end, there were hundreds of kids in attendance
keen to catch a glimpse of their heroes. The Hurricanes went
through a tough season last year with a lot of mud being flung
at them from the sidelines.
A big thank you to Filipe Rayasi, Jim McMenamin, Trish
Burnette, Megan Bailey, Peter & Ally Ballinger and the K2
boys. Another great example of the Eagles stepping up in the
community.
They have had a great start to season
and connecting to the community in
this way will only encourage more
grass roots support.
On the 7th March a function was
commemorate and officially open the
clubroom renovations. Special guests
Mayor Ray Wallace, Deputy Mayor David
Bassett, Councillor Laban, Hutt City
Council staff, WRFU staff, NZ Marist
representatives, Past President of NZRFU
Andy Leslie, Life Members, sponsors and
volunteers were in attendance. Mayor
Wallace unveiled a commemorative
plaque.
The clubrooms were built in 1970 and
after 40 years were in urgent need of
refurbishment. In 2010 The Centenary
Committee decided that the centenary
celebrations presented an opportunity to
rejuvenate our clubrooms and establish
a platform for the next 100 years. The
work was only able to be undertaken
because of the support of the following
Community Trusts: • NZCT
• Pub Charity
• Pelorus Trust
• Infinity Foundation
• Water Safety Education Foundation
Their contributions, along with a
considerable amount of our own funds
represent an investment in our future.
Not only that, we have been able to
recapture our past – something that we
had largely lost along the way amid the 3
amalgamations we have been involved in
since 1967.
In welcoming the guests Chairman, John
Sheehan thanked those club members
who gave up their time to assist with the
renovation work and those businesses
that donated or provided materials at cut
rates. He also thanked Peter McGuinness
and the L T McGuinness crew who went
above and beyond to complete the work
within our budget, and also Bernard
Nolan and Paul Kelly for their tireless
efforts over the past few months applying
the finishing touches.
HOBMRFC has been through some
challenging times but this club is
now arguably one of the strongest
in Wellington, boasting more than
600 playing members and over 800
supporters and has grown over the past
decade to a force to be reckoned with
across all grades we are represented in.
John noted however this club would
never have achieved these successes
without the support of the trusts
mentioned and those others that
support us financially every year. These
Community Trusts and their pokies are
a vital lifeline to all sports and volunteer
organizations throughout NZ. The
Greens and Maori Parties both have bills
before Parliament looking to curb this
industry. Any initiatives to reduce their
income is likely to have huge downstream
repercussions for clubs like ours.
In his speech John urged local and
government politicians to retain a
balanced perspective in dealing with
these bills. It takes well over $200,000
per annum to run this club and it would
impossible to provide the services we do
to our players and supporters without
the Community Trust’s and our sponsor’s
ongoing support.

Eagles dominate in McBain Shield win
The McBain shield, first played between
Petone and what is now Hutt Old Boys
Marist in 1935, means a lot to both clubs.
It is a contest that Petone has traditionally
dominated, having won 57 times in
its history. Hutt’s wins, although more
frequent in recent years, have been hard
fought and narrow in margin.
Deon Carney secured some untidy ball
from a Petone lineout and drove forward
through the Petone forward pack like a
rampaging bull. From the resulting ruck,
Nick Risdon fed Simon Malaeulu down
the blindside, who showed more toe
than a roman sandle as he steamed down
the touchline to beat a Petone back on
the outside, throw a half dummy, before
feeding Tupeni Kamakorewa who scored
under the posts.
Not content with that, the Eagles struck
again moments later. A nice skip pass
to fullback Glen Walters saw him make a
break, pass to Kamakorewa who drew the
last man for Walters to score another fine
try under the bar.
But on ANZAC day, in enemy territory
at the Petone Recreation ground, it
was the Eagles who dominated as
they demolished the Villagers on their
home turf. The 43 to 21 victory was
another great team performance, and
is to my knowledge Hutt’s biggest win
over Petone in the 77 year history of the
McBain shield.
Playing in to the wind, the Eagles looked
the better side and went to a 17-9 lead
at half time. After trading some early
penalties which saw Petone take a 6-3
lead after 29 minutes, the Eagles stepped
into gear.
Petone started the second half better
with Brad Shields making an impact when
he came on after the break. The Villagers
came back in to reckoning with a fine 50
metre try scored by their second five Nick
Grigg.
This was another good team performance
from the Eagles, with the forwards
creating a strong platform for the backs
to shine. While it is hard to single out
individuals, I thought open side flanker
Jason Risdon had a huge game, both in
support play and on defence. Likewise
Simon Malaeulu made some storming
runs and both wingers finished superbly.
Glen Walters looked sharp at fullback,
Alexis Time ran strongly and put in some
The Eagles weren’t
about to let them into
the game though.
Following another big
run from Malaeulu, the
Eagles made a smart
play. Taleta Tupuoloa
came flying from the
open side and called
for the ball from Nic
Risdon at the ruck who
popped a lovely pass for
Tupuola to score running
against the grain down
the blindside. Walters
converted from the
corner to put the Eagles
out to a 24-16 lead.

Captain Nic Risdon, who controlled
the game well throughout, set
up another try, this time for
right winger Kamakorewa who
collected a clever Risdon chip kick
to score.
Petone managed a consolation
try at the end to bring the
final score to a slightly more
respectable 43-21.
There are always things to improve but
this was a victory to saviour. Coaches
Matt Lee and Justin Wilson must be
very pleased with the way the team is
performing and of course the result. I
know the supporters are.

Another long skip pass saw ‘Leka’ dot
down again as he out-sprinted the Petone
defenders to score in the corner.
Leka managed a hat trick soon
after as quick hands put him into
space and he had too much gas
for the Petone defence.
big tackles, as did centre Taiso SilafaiLeaana.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
9th Annual HOBM Golf Fundaiser
A good turnout of 21 teams of four
turned out at Boulcott's Farm Heritage
Golf Club on Friday afternoon 27th April,
using a corporate membership day
sponsored by Stevens Ford Motors. Under
a threatening sky, with a light breeze,
the teams soon adjusted to the slightly
confusing Ambrose playing format; after
earlier negotiations with the tournament
organisers about some very dubious golf
handicaps.
Tournament organisers Megan Mailey,
Peter McGuiness and others had arranged
some excellent team prizes and raffle
prizes. Resplendent in an official Green
Polo Shirt recently acquired on his visit
to the Augusta golf tournament in USA,
Kevin Melville awarded prizes to the
following:

Gwilliam, Phil Rayasi.
4th: Peter Fraser, John Morgan, Jason
