COMMANDANT ANNOUNCES NEXT SERGEANT MAJOR OF MARINES
By Sgt. Michael S. Cifuentes, Headquarters Marine Corps
Sgt Maj Micheal Barrett (L) and CMC Gen. James Amos (R)
WASHINGTON — Commandant of the
Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos announced the
next Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps April 11.
Sgt. Maj. Micheal Barrett, 1st Marine
Division’s sergeant major, is set to take charge as
the senior enlisted Marine in the Marine Corps.
He’s scheduled to succeed Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent,
the current Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps,
during an appointment and relief ceremony, and
Kent’s retirement ceremony held at Marine
Barracks Washington June 9.
Barrett recently returned from a deployment to
Helmand province, Afghanistan, where he served
as Regional Command Southwest’s sergeant
major.
Amos said Barrett is “the best of the best,” and
will continue to serve the Corps as Amos’ senior
enlisted advisor.
“Sgt. Maj. Barrett, through his long and distinguished service to our nation, has demonstrated
that he is particularly well-suited to serve as my
senior enlisted advisor through the challenges
ahead,” said Amos.
Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation
Barrett enlisted as an infantryman in March
1981. In addition to Afghanistan, his combat
deployments include serving in the Persian Gulf
War as a sniper with 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine
Regiment, and two tours in Iraq as battalion sergeant major of 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine
Regiment.
Kent has served as the Sergeant Major of the
Marine Corps since April 25, 2007. He graduated
recruit training March 1976 at Marine Corps
Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. In his 35 years of
service, Kent has led Marines in various billets to
include senior drill instructor and battalion drill
master at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego,
chief drill instructor and first sergeant at Naval
Aviation Officers Candidate School in Pensacola,
Fla., and sergeant major of I Marine Expeditionary
Force at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton,
Calif.
“My time on active duty is coming to an end,
and I'm honored to pass the sword of office to Sgt.
Maj. Barrett,” said Kent. “He is a true warrior and
will continue the great legacy our Corps.”

2010 Jim Kallstrom Award Winners
On March 9th, 2011, the 2010 Jim Kallstrom Awards
were presented to Sergeant Frank Cruz, and Corporal
Daniel Campbell. The awards were presented at the annual
Senior Leader's Security Conference, hosted by
Headquarters Marine Corps Security Division. This year the
conference was held at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San
Diego and the awards were presented by the guest of honor,
Major General Anthony Jackson, Commanding General of
Marine Corps Installations West.
The Kallstrom Awards were named in honor of Mr.
James (Jim) Kallstrom, a former Vietnam era Marine who
distinguished himself as a leader within the law enforcement community. He served more than 28 years with the
Federal Bureau of Investigation, culminating with his
appointment as the Assistant Director of the FBI's New
York Bureau. The Kallstrom Awards were introduced in
2010 to recognize Marine military police that demonstrate
the ethos of protect and serve; the Department of the Navy
core values of honor, courage, and commitment; and a general concern for the well-being of the Corps and fellow
Marines.
Sgt Frank Cruz was awarded for demonstrated superior
leadership while assigned as a convoy commander in
Afghanistan, an instructor/mentor when in garrison, and
throughout his career. A native of El Monte, California, he
enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 2005 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San
Diego. He was assigned to Military Police Company, 1st
Marine Logistics Group where he deployed with the 11th
Marine Expeditionary Unit and served a tour in Afghanistan
with Combat Logistics Regiment 15. While with 1st MLG,
he earned numerous training certifications to include
Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor and Non-Lethal
Weapons Instructor. It was during his time at this command
that he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal
and combat meritoriously promoted to his present rank of
Sergeant. He attended the awards banquet with his wife, the
former Ms. Angelina Brandon who is also from EI Monte,
CA.
Cpl Daniel Campbell was selected from among several
noteworthy nominees as the winner in the category of bravery for his life saving actions while deployed to Afghanistan
as a member of the Police Mentoring Team, 3rd Battalion,
1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. His actions directly
resulted in the rescue of a Navy Corpsman, Marine Military
Working Dog handler, and a Military Working Dog from a
submerged tactical vehicle. Corporal Campbell was meritoriously promoted to his current rank just prior to his deployment to Afghanistan. Cpl Campbell is the oldest of five children and originally from The Bronx, New York. The son of
a NY Firefighter and oldest of five children, he worked for

the New York City Fire Department EMS for three years
before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 2008. Cpl Campbell
was accompanied by his fiancee Ms. Kathryn Mannion of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Raymond Geoffroy, Assistant Deputy Commandant
(Security) and Director of the Security Division, assisted in
the presentation of the awards. The awardees received trophies, a cash award of $1000, full accommodations to the
Hilton Bay Front Hotel, a signed copy of Afghanistan:

Rush Limbaugh,
t h e “ D o c t o r o f D e m o c r a c y , “ has been
labeled as the savior of AM radio by broadcast industry leaders. Limbaugh revolutionized the media and political
landscape with his unprecedented combination of serious discussion of political, cultural and social issues along
with satirical and biting humor, which parodies previously “untouchable” personalities and topics. His passion
has inspired millions of Americans to be the best they can be, and kept the country on course to a bright future.
On August 1, 1988 Rush launched his phenomenally successful radio broadcast into national
syndication, with 56 radio stations. More than 20 years later the show is heard on nearly 600 stations by up to 20 million people each week and is the highest-rated national radio talk show in
America. Rush was awarded the Syndicated Radio Personality of the year by the National
Association of Broadcasters in 1992, 1995, 2000, and 2005. He was inducted into the
Radio Hall of Fame in 1993 and National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame
in 1998.

Rush Hudson Limbaugh III was born in 1951 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to a family with generations of attorneys. At 16, he chose
to explore his passion for broadcasting by working as a disc jockey for a hometown radio station. After four years, he left for Pittsburgh
to work for the former ABC owned and operated KQV. Tired of the disc jockey life, Rush briefly left broadcasting for business, joining the Kansas City Royals as Director of Group Sales, and then Director of Sales and Special Events.
Rush couldn’t resist the urge to return to broadcasting. In 1983, he re-entered radio as a political commentator for KMBZ in
Kansas City. A year later Rush hosted a daytime talk show in Sacramento, California, tripling the program’s ratings in four
years. From there, in 1988 he went on to New York where the record-breaking national show was born.

DEAR AMERICA,
“ TH E LI B ER A L S A R E C O M I N G ,
T H E LI B E R A L S A R E C O M I N G ! ”
My good friend, Paul Revere laid out the blueprint of how to
deal with this. Sound the alarm!
“ONE IF BY LAND, TWO IF BY TEA!”
TM
Two If By Tea represents traditional American values of capitalism and the pursuit of excellence. Each bottle
designed to rise above the sameness and mediocrity that threatens our great nation. Just grab a 12pack and join the fight to preserve the America we know and love. It’s worth it!
Our scientific panel of testers has been working for years to develop the perfect recipe of tea one that is fit for bottle. All these years of rigorous testing have left us with the best quality
tea we sell today.
TM
Two If By Tea is made just the way mother used to make it, simple and satisfying. Nothing
fancy here, just the simple pursuit of excellence in every bottle we make. Whether you’re kicking
back on the front porch reflecting on the greatness of our country or firing up the barbeque on a
TM
nice hot summer afternoon. Two If By Tea is the perfect accompaniment, no matter what the occaTM
sion. You will be dazzled by the excellent taste of Two If By Tea in every sip you take because
it is not too sweet, strong, or fruity but just right.
In the spirit of keeping it simple, we started with two basic flavors, Original and Raspberry.
We’ve used some of the finest traditional black tea available to make each flavor unique and delicious. The ingredients are picked by the finest pickers, selected by the finest selectors and produced
TM
by the finest producers. If you are trying to cut back on calories, each Two If By Tea flavor is
available in a diet version! You get all the goodness of our regular flavored teas calorie free and
with less sugar. Best of all, you don’t have to put up with the artificial chemical aftertaste that you find
in many other beverages.
TM
Developing and bringing Two If By Tea to market has been a unique American experience for
all of us who worked on the project. We were all reminded of the blessings bestowed upon our
country by our Founders and the Constitution, who fought to create and safeguard the fundamental values of a free society, knowing that it was limited government and belief in the greatness of
the American people that established the concept of American Exceptionalism.
Fellow Americans, hold on to our exceptional values, stand up against those who want to suppress your individual rights and above all take pride in being an American! While you’re at it, join
me in drinking a bottle of my tea as we admire the great United States of America and the military
and law enforcement officials who fight to defend our freedom every day. Thank God, yes God,
for the blessings of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and of course, this wonderful drink Two If By Tea! TM

Contributing To Their Futures...
2 YOUNG CHILDREN OF LATE MARINE EACH RECEIVE A $30,000 BOND
John Moss, Herald News Staff Reporter
Reprinted from Herald News
The Fagundes family stands with members of the Marine Corps League, John and
Anastasia McVey and Ed Fitzgerald.
FALL RIVER - The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement
Foundation presented $30,000 bonds to each of the two
young children of the late Marine Cpl. Paul Fagundes on
Saturday.
Fagundes drowned July 4, 2010, while trying to rescue
two fellow Marines caught in a riptide in waters near
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
His widow, Cindy Fagundes, accepted the contribution
on behalf of her children - 2 year old Cazzian Paul and 5
month-old Anya Paullynn. Cindy Fagundes was five
months pregnant with Anya when her husband died.
The presentation was held at the lwo Jima monument in
Bicentennial State Park.
"It was beautiful. We're very grateful to the Marine
Corps League. It was very, very generous of them," Cindy
Fagundes said after the ceremony. "It was something that
actually meant something to everybody."
Ed Fitzgerald, U.S. Marine Corps retired colonel and a
director for the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement
Foundation, presented the bonds to Fagundes.
"It was an emotional moment that my husband would have
been so proud of." Cindy Fagundes said.
Fitzgerald also gave presents to Fagundes, her children
and her mother-in-law.
Page 8
For 16 years, the volunteer Marine Corps - Law
Enforcement Foundation has provided assistance valued at
more than $50 million for the children it serves. The bonds
are given to the children of Marines who have been killed
or died, and to the children of fallen federal law enforcement agency officials.
This was the first time a Fall River soldier's family was
awarded these bonds, which totaled $60,000, Fitzgerald
said. The funds can be cashed in when the children turn 18
years old, and the foundation encourages families to use
them for educational purposes, he said.
The Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation was
well represented at the event.
Fagundes' children received the bonds in memory of
Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Ian McVey, who was killed in a
motorcycle accident in July 2008.
McVey's parents also were present.
"They were very, very touched by the event and
impressed with the turnout," Fitzgerald said.
Many from the Fall River area were on hand to pay their
respects to the Fagundes family.
The family was very grateful to the Marine Corps - Law
Enforcement Foundation for the bonds, he said.

Cpl. Paul Fagundes Strives To
Educate Others On
Heroism Of Service Members
Cindy Fagundes makes a point to talk to her two young children
Cazzian, 2, and Anya, 4 months, about their father on a daily basis.
Marine Cpl. Paul Fagundes passed away July 4, 2010, while
attempting to rescue a pair of fellow Marines who were enjoying
some time off and got caught in a riptide in the waters near
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. All three perished in the incident.
Fagundes was 29 years old.
"It's a goal for me to let them know what type of a person their
dad was," Cindy Fagundes said.
At the time of her husband's untimely passing, Cindy was five
months pregnant. Late last year, she gave birth to Anya, whose

middle name, Paullynn, is a tribute to her late husband. Cazzian

his father.
Having a young family to support, Cindy Fagundes returned to
work in January. She is a nursing instructor at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School and does
some nursing shifts at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
In between working and caring for her two young children, Fagundes has come up with some innovative
ideas for letting Cazzian and Anya know what kind of person their father was.
"I have asked family members and friends to write down memories of Paul," Fagundes said Cindy. "I'm
going to create a book for them. All of their father's clothing, I'm going to cut up into pieces and create quilts."
Fagundes also plans on writing messages about her husband on some of his military equipment. She said he
enjoyed creating logos that connected to some of the physical training he did while in the Marines. She will
make copies of the logos and include them on the quilts.
Cindy Fagundes has bonded with the other Fall River families that lost a loved one serving in the military at
the time of their passing. She attended the funerals of Pfc. Ethan Goncalo and Sgt. Jason Pool, both of whom
died after her husband. Cindy Fagundes regularly speaks on the phone with Joanne Andrews, mother of Army
Spc. Scott Andrews, who was killed in Afghanistan by an enemy improvised-explosive device one week before
Paul Fagundes' death.
"I really try to be involved with them and let them know we are here for each other," Fagundes said. "We're
all in the same boat and can empathize with each other's situation, while a lot of people don't know how the
military works and don't understand how our whole thought process is and where our hearts are."
She feels Fall River has rallied around these terrible tragedies. Everywhere she goes, American and military
flags are displayed throughout the city. These symbols mean a lot to her and the other families who are grieving their loved ones.
"Not every day has been easy," Fagundes said. "It has been a struggle at times, but with the help of friends,
family and the other military families, we're trying to make people aware that these fallen soldiers are heroes."
Just one month after her husband's death, Fagundes established the Guardian Relief Fund. Originally, the
purpose of the fund was to assist Marines and their families based at Camp Allen in Norfolk, Va., where Paul
Fagundes was stationed.
Cindy Fagundes has since opened up the fund to assist military families throughout Massachusetts. She set
up a pair of $1,000 scholarships to honor her husband. The first is for Bristol Community College students
enrolled in the Criminal Justice program who are either already in or are planning to join the military.

FAGUNDES....
The second is for a Joseph Case High School student who is planning
on entering the military after graduation.
Paul Fagundes was a 1999 graduate of Case and also received a degree
from Bristol Community College.
So far, the Guardian Relief Fund has assisted four military families with rent and food and also helped a veteran locate an apartment in Fall River.
In October, the fund hosted a pool-tournament fundraiser. This Saturday, the fund will host a spaghetti dinner and dance. The event will take place at the Don Carlos Club, 245 Plain St. in Fall River. The dinner runs
from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with dancing from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to
12, and the event is free for children 5 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event.
There will be door prizes, raffle prizes, a 50/50 raffle, a disc jockey and a special surprise for young
children.
The event takes place four days after what would have been Paul Fagundes' 30th birthday.
All proceeds raised from the dinner will go to the Guardian Relief Fund. Cindy Fagundes said she has sold
more than 200 tickets so far, but there is room for about 50 more.
In addition to the dinner and the pool tournament, she hopes to organize a barbecue picnic in the late summer and a bowling tournament at the end of the year.
"Putting together these events keeps us busy, and it also keeps Paul's memory alive," Cindy Fagundes said.
"This is something that Paul would have loved, helping others, especially military families."
While some people might be amazed that Fagundes is able to juggle all of these responsibilities, she feels
that staying busy has helped with the healing process.
"The biggest thing is to live in the now," Fagundes said. "Live one day at a time. You have to be positive
and active, if you are not positive, then life really wasn't worth living.
Everybody is in our life for a reason. I really think that Paul's reason was to show us what love is."

CONTRIBUTING TO THEIR FUTURES...

“When a young man and a young woman join the Marine
Corps, their entire family joins, and they share the pride and
the commitment that the Marine Corps signifies," Fitzgerald
told the crowd at the gathering.
"The Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation
wanted to recognize (Fagundes') service to his country,"
Fitzgerald said later.
"We wanted to let Cindy know that the Marine Corps will
be with her whenever she needs us."
Many gathered around Fagundes after the presentation to
quietly offer their support.
She returned to her job in January as a nursing instructor
at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School and
also performs nursing shifts at Charlton Memorial Hosoital.
To make sure her children know about their father and
his heroism, she has asked family members and friends to
write down memories about Paul Fagundes. She also plans
to cut up his clothing material for the creation of quilts.

LTGEN Steven Hummer
Takes Over Command of
Marine Forces Reserve
By Paul Purpura, The Times-Picayune
Weeks after he oversaw the repeal of the Defense
Department’s ban on gay soldiers in the military, Lt.
Gen. Steven Hummer, who led a regiment of combat
Marines to Baghdad and beyond during the March
2003 invasion of Iraq, took command Wednesday of
Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North during a ceremony in Algiers.
A Pennsylvania native, Hummer takes the reins of
a Reserve force more than five months after his predecessor, Lt. Gen. John Kelly, was tapped to become
the senior military adviser to the secretary of defense.
Maj. Gen. Darrell Moore served as acting commander until Wednesday, when Hummer became the
Reserve force’s first official commander to occupy
offices in the new Marine Corps Support Facility, a
$110 million, state-financed compound viewed as the
anchor tenant for the Federal City project in Algiers.
In a ceremony in which platoons of the headquarters’ Marines performed close-order drills on the
compound’s grassy parade field, Hummer praised the
musicians under his new command, in the Marine
Forces Reserve Band, whose repertoire of standard
military anthems Wednesday was punctuated by
jazzy local tunes.
“The Marine band, we have different sheet music
down here in New Orleans,” Hummer said in a
moment of levity to the crowd that included Marine
Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos and Sgt. Maj.
of the Marine Corps Michael Barrett.
Amos also noted the development of the facility.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” he said. “I can’t think of a
better parade deck. I can’t think of a better headquarters.”
Hummer, who enlisted in the Marines in 1970,
held command billets in nearly every level of infantry

unit, including as a company commander in 1st
Battalion, 9th Marines, then led by David Mize, the
retired major general who was Reserve commander
in New Orleans from 1998 to 2001 and is now overseeing the Federal City development.
Hummer, who also commanded the 7th Marines
during the Iraq invasion, was nominated for the
Marine Reserve post in May, while temporarily
assigned to the Pentagon’s Repeal Implementation
Team, charged with repealing the don’t ask, don’t tell
policy. President Barack Obama signed the repeal
order July 22.
Of Hummer, Amos said, “We have picked the very
best to command Marine Forces Reserve.”
Amos said the Reserve force has more combat
experience than it ever has during his 40 years as a
Marine, and he pledged not to allow it to fall into the
“atrophy” it was in before the reservists gained combat experience since Sept. 11, 2001. “What we have
now are hardcore Marines and sailors who have day
jobs, if you will,” Amos said of the reservists.
Hummer concurred, saying every Marine Reserve
unit has deployed overseas during the past decade,
totaling more than 60,000 Marines. More than 4,100
reservists are in Afghanistan, North Africa and elsewhere. He also said 157 Marine reservists and seven
sailors assigned to the Marine reserves have been
killed during the past 10 years, and 1,250 others were
wounded.
“Those sacrifices occurred in Marine Forces
Reserve, just like the total force,” Hummer said.

ST. LOUIS
29 TH A NNUAL
29 TH A NNUAL
St. Louis, Mo. The 29th Annual Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation Gala held June 24th
was another great success, attracting 275 guests.
The St. Louis Chapter of MC-LEF, who over the
years has raised over 3 million dollars for children of
Marines and Corpsman, raised over $150,000.00 this
year during their event.
The ceremony kicked off with a magnificent performance by the Albany Marine Band. They opened
the event with the National Anthem and kept the
momentum going to the delight of a wonderful audience.
The military guest of honor, Major General
Timothy C. Hanifen was the guest speaker and left
the crowd much more aware of what is going on in
the Marine Corps.
While it was a tough act to follow, the event continued with great awards to some of the founders of
the St. Louis Chapter. Tom Tenholder, the recipient
of the 2011 Globe and Anchor Award, was quoted to
say he was “honored just to be a member of the
Marine Corps Family”. Earle Leadlove, Esq.
received the Semper Fidelis award for his contribution while 2 time Silver Star awardee Lt Col George
Bolduc received the Commandant’s Leadership
Award. As past CO of recruiting station St. Louis,

LtCol Bolduc understood the great works of the
Foundation. Recruiting has always been one of the
toughest billets in the Marine Corps.
One of the highlights of the evening was the
appearance of Cindy Ballman, widow of Tom
Ballman, a Kirkwood Police Officer who was shot
and killed during a rampage at Kirkwood City Hall in
2008. Ballman was a former Marine and the Marine
Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation awarded his
two children $60,000.00 worth of scholarship bonds.
To quote our local scribe of the St. Louis Post
Dispatch, Cindy told the audience how much those
scholarship bonds meant not only in terms of financial security, but knowing that she and her kids are
part of the Marine Corps family.
Long time communications expert and committee
member, Dan Werner, once again showed a stirring
slide presentation, while his daughter Kelley sang
two striking songs. Dan’s show has always attracted
many fans with his talent.
There were two of our greatest heroes in attendance, Maj Gen James Livingston and Lt Brian
Thacker, Medal of Honor recipients, who delighted
the audience with their stories.

CHICAGO DINNER
O
By Pat Haynes
n June 8th, Chicago MC-LEF held its 6th annual dinner at the prestigious Chicago Club. Mr Ken Boyd spoke of
his son Christopher (C.J.), killed in October of 2010 in
Afghanistan. Mr Boyd thanked MC-LEF for providing his
family the comfort during their time of need. He stressed
what a difference MC-LEF meant to C.J.’s widow and his
18 month old twin boys. An extremely moving and emotional account.
Our Military guest of honor was Gen Joseph “FIGHTMr. and Mrs. Pat Haynes (L) are shown with the

Military Guest of Honor, Gen Joseph Dunford,
Marine Corps. Gen Dunford spoke extemporaneously on

are making, and the positive reinforcement that MC-LEF
makes to our warriors and their families. It will be long
remembered in Chicago. The evening was so emotional that at the end of the event a guest presented a check
for $60,000 to Mrs. Boyd for MC-LEF. Truly remarkable.
The Air Wing was well represented by senior active duty and reserve officers. Chicago’s own 2/24 was in
attendance with their Color Guard participating. Bing West the accomplished writer and Marine veteran and
LtGen D’Wayne Gray (former FMFPAC) made it in from the east coast. Two of the Viet Nam era PHROG
drivers were in attendance. The most notable was federal judge “Pat” Donavan, recipient of 2 Navy
Crosses, Silver Star, DFC, Bronze Star and numerous Air Medals. Rick Leventhal, war correspondent for
FOX News acted as our M.C.
All in all a very successful evening with over $600,000 in donations. There will be 20 children who will
benefit from the evening in the “City with Big Shoulders.”

BRIGHT UNIFORMS AND BRASSES PERK UP A STAGE °
ALLEN KOZINN
NEW YORK TIMES
The final installment of the New
York Philharmonic's Summertime
Classics series coincided with
Independence Day weekend, and
Bramwell Tovey, the British conductor
who oversees these concerts and introduces the music with amusing commentary, was on hand to apologize (a
couple of times) on behalf of his countrymen.
He may have overcompensated a
bit. It would have been difficult to put
together a program more fully steeped
in Americana and patriotism than the
one Mr. Tovey led at Avery Fisher Hall
United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps shared Avery Fisher on Saturday evening. It had it all:
Hall with the New York Philharmonic in a Summertime Classics concert.
Broadway tunes, Gershwin, Copland
and Sousa, and performances by the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, which had the stage to itself
for most of the second half. Along the way there was a brief ceremony
A FOURTH OF JULY AS
during which a handful of the Marine musicians received promotions, and
AMERICAN AS
veterans and audience rnembers currently serving were selected to stand
GERSHWIN AND SOUSA.
during a medley of themes representing various branches of the armed
forces.
Mr. Tovey began with "Salute Broadway," a frothy suite assembled by Andre Kostelanetz and arranged by
Robert Russell Bennett, packed with music by Cole Porter (from "Kiss Me Kate"), Richard Rodgers ("South
Pacific") and Frederick Lowe ("My Fair Lady"). The orchestra played with energy, but not much warmth, and
sounded slightly shrill in the more ebullient passages.
Perhaps that was to do with an unfortunate chemistry between Bennett's orchestrations and the hall's
acoustics: "Catfish Row," Gershwin's own suite of "Porgy and Bess" highlights, sounded decidedly better,
with a sweet-toned solo violin rendering of "Summertime," by Michelle Kim, the orchestra's assistant concertmaster, as the clear highlight.
Maj. Brian Dix, who was as chatty as Mr. Tovey, opened the Marines' section of the program with his own
"Tour of Duty," a colorful, sparkling piece that made the most of the ensemble's expansive percussion section
but also gave the brasses plenty of shapely melody. Brass and percussion arrangements of sections from
Copland's "Appalachian Spring" and Leroy Anderson's "Fiddle-Faddle" worked surprisingly well, and were
given polished, high-energy performances, as were a set of jazzy variations on "Reveille" and Sousa's "Semper
Fidelis," the corps' official march, though Jule Styne's "Don't Rain on My Parade" seemed slightly rag-tag.
With the Philharmonic and the Marine musicians sharing the stage Mr. Tovey led Sousa's "Washington
Post" and the major's own "Birth of a Drum Corps" Major Dix also conducted his own arrangement of Stephen
Bulla's "Armed Forces Medley." For encores each conductor offered an account of Sousa's "Stars and Stripes
Forever." Mr. Tovey's was fairly straight-forward, Major Dix's faster, brighter and more assertive, with, some
odd touches, not least are reassignment of the piccolo line to pitched percussion. The combined ensemble
played both versions with spirit and vigor.

Making Opportunities

what they focus on today. This gave me the idea to create a business
that would support the services that IBM no longer wanted to support,
namely programming and software support. Can you imagine? Interest rates were at 26 percent
for borrowing money then. To create a small business at that time, with no money, meant you
were struggling to keep your head above water.
But my wife Cheryl and I quit our jobs and we started a company together. It was a struggle
for a while. The first three years, I held a number of other jobs. In the morning I would get up and
teach a class, then would go out and meet executives to sell our services. I met them at one of
the hotels in town because I could not afford an office at the time. In the afternoon I would network and try to get consultants to work for me. And then in the evening I would teach classes
again (seven days a week, routinely).
Cheryl was running the finance part, doing the billing and so on. We ran the business over a
garage. In the summertime, it was about 115 degrees in there. We’d be in our shorts and when
I visited customers, I’d jump into a business suit to meet them. I remember we used to divide up
the money at the end of the month, and sometimes we had enough to buy a pizza.
And today? Today, we have close to 2,000 people working for us. We’re a $130 million company, one of the top privately held staffing and solutions firms in the country.
Opportunities will often happen at the oddest times. But you have to believe in yourself and
take the opportunities and make them your own.

Dear Mrs. Falkenhan,
Our Board and Members were deeply saddened to learn of the
loss of your loved one, Emergency Service Specialist Mark
Falkenhan while on active duty with the United States Secret
Service. Though no words will ever be adequate, may it bring you
comfort to know that his bravery and service to the USSS is deeply
respected. To show our appreciation and respect for that service,
our Foundation is honored to enclose twelve U.S. Treasury bonds
(a total maturity value of $60,000) for Christian Falkenhan &
Garrett Falkenhan.
Each bond has been issued in your children's names with you

We hope and pray your family and you are comforted by many
wonderful memories of Mark Falkenhan, USSS and that the support

A CLASSY AFFAIR
At the burial of U.S. Marine Staff
Sgt. Marcus A. Golcynski, his 8-yearold son Christian, choking back tears,
stepped forward to receive the folded
American flag in honor of his father's
service.
The expression of heartbreak on his
young face was captured in a photo
and has become a powerful symbol of
the sacrifice made by our troops and
their families for our freedom.
"I see courage and strength. I see
pride," Heather Golcynski said when
she looks at her son in the 2007 iconic
photo. "His Dad was his hero."
Marc Golcynski, 30, was killed by
enemy fire on March 27, 2007 while
on foot patrol in al Anbar province, a
week before he was to return home
from his second tour in Iraq, a duty for
which he volunteered. He was a
Marine Reservist for 12 years assigned
to the Marine Forces Reserve's Third
Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment,
Fourth Marine Division in Nashville,
Tennessee. Heather Golcynski was the
guest speaker at the 16th annual
Marine Corps-Law Enforcement
Foundation Gala at the WaldorfAstoria in New York last March and
talked about Marc's deep commitment to
his family, his country, and the Corps.
"Marc wasn't just a Marine, he was
an extraordinary Marine," Heather
said. "He was my best friend. He
would light up a room."
The young widow says she finds
comfort when she looks at her son
Christian and sees Marc reflected in
him.
The soft-spoken Heather also shared
her thoughts about Christian, now 11
years old, as he stood proudly at his
mother's side.
She and Marc want their son to have
love of country and respect for all
those who defend it.

BIG SUCCESS
Special Thanks to Mrs. Heather Golcznski
and her son Christian Golcznski for an
inspiring presentation of the unknown trials and obstacles she had to overcome
after losing SSgt. Marcus Golcznski,
USMC who was killed on March 27th
2007 in Fallujah, Iraq.
"I hope that Christian will follow in
his Dad's footsteps," she said. "He is
going to change the world some day.
He is awesome."
She thanked the Marine Corps-Law
Enforcement Foundation for its
tremendous support in Christian's
future in the $30,000 scholarship bond
they gave him for his education as a
surviving child of a Marine killed in
action.
"This Foundation is made up of the
most amazing people I have ever
known," she told the dinner guests.
"They stepped up and stepped up big."
Her remarks drew a standing ovation from among the more than 600
distinguished guests at the black-tie
affair including numerous dignitaries
such as four-star Generals James L.
Jones, former National Security
Advisor to President Barack Obama,
and Peter Pace, former Chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both USMC

Thomas J. Donahue, president and
CEO of the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce was honored with MCLEF's 2011 prestigious Commandant's
Leadership Award.
"It is an honor to be recognized by
MC-LEF, and I am humbled to be
among so many men and women who
have served our nation with honor and
courage," Tom Donohue said. "The
leadership that MC-LEF demonstrates
in helping Marine Corps and federal
law enforcement families is invaluable."
"I cannot think of a more important
mission than educating the children of
our fallen heroes and giving our support to those who have sacrificed their
lives to protect our freedoms," he said.
In presenting the award, General
Jones noted Donahue's inspiring leadership skills and his enormous support
for the men and women in uniform and
their families as well as for his own
people.
"In the Marine Corps, leadership is
something we hold dear," Jones said.

"Tom Donahue realizes leadership
is not just telling people what to do, but
taking care of people."
"He is a special leader," Jones said.
Since taking over as head of the U. S.
Chamber of Commerce in 1997,
Donahue has built it into a political
powerhouse with expanding influence
around the globe. He is known for
aggressively advancing a competitiveness agenda that includes doubling
U.S. exports in five years, strengthening capital markets and forging a
national energy strategy.
Donahue is also a generous MCLEF contributor. He was so moved by
work of the Foundation, underscored
at the evening's Gala, that he took out
his check book and wrote a significant
check for the Foundation right after the
dinner.
"We are grateful for Tom's enthusiastic support," said Richard P.
Torykian, Sr., MC-LEF co-founder
and vice-chairman.
"He never shows he had a bad day,"
Torykian said. "No matter how difficult his obstacles may be he always
presses onward, and always enthusiastically."
The New York MC-LEF gala raised
more than $900,000.00 net income earmarked for educational bonds for the
children of Marines and federal law
enforcement agents killed in the line of
duty and for financial assistance for
disabled children of marines.
"The Gala was a magnificent success," said Torykian, the dinner cochair. "It's so great that the American
people support the families of the
Fallen through our Foundation even
despite a bad economy."
Since MC-LEF's creation in 1995,
the Foundation has awarded more than
50 million dollars in educational scholarships of more than 2,800 children
whose parent was killed in action,
according to Peter Haas, MC-LEF
president.
Haas noted that 97 cents of every
dollar the Foundation raises is used to

take care of the sons and daughters of
Marines and law enforcement who put
their lives on the line every day.
At certain points, MC-LEF has
expanded its program and provided
scholarships to surviving children of
other crisis including to the children of
military and civilian personnel who
died in the 9/11 Pentagon attacks and
of Army soldiers and soldiers from
Great Britian who were part of the
Coalition forces killed in the invasion
of Iraq and Afghanistan, according to
Haas.
"It's a sobering thought that we
needed $50 million dollars for the
young children who lost a parent,"
MC-LEF chairman Jim Kallstrom told
the audience. "It is sad that we need more."
"Nothing is more important than
taking care of our young children," he
added. "We stand with them."
General James Amos, the 35th
Commandant of the Marine Corps,
was the military guest of honor at the
esteemed event.
Amos, the first naval aviator to
become Commandant, assumed command of the Marine Corps last year
after
commanding
II
Marine
Expeditionary Force and an aviation
wing in Iraq.
"This is one of the most sacred
things that commandants and senior
leadership want to come to," Amos
told the guests.
"I am here on a mission to say "thank
you" to this MC-LEF organization that
provides scholarships to our children," he
said. "Thank you for all you do."
Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation
Amos said there are roughly 20,000
Marines deployed at war in southern
Afghanistan and there is no shortage of
work for the Marine Corps and "We
are honored and privileged to serve,"
he said.
During the festivities, there was a
pause for a moment of silence in
recognition of one of MC-LEF's cofounders, Steven Wallace, who passed
away last October at the age of 68.
Wallace, a former Marine from Los
Angeles, started Pacific Brokerage
Services which grew into one of the
largest discount and on-line brokerage
firms in the country during the 1990s.
His son Jason accepted an award in
honor of his father's long time support
of the Foundation.
To close out the successful event
guests were regaled by a glorious tribute to America by the United States
Marine Drum and Bugle Corps dressed
in their ceremonial red and white uniforms. The D&B consists of 80 active
duty Marines and is officially designated as "The Commandant's Own,"
because of the traditional connection to
the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
"MC-LEF is a one in a million foundation," said Rep. Pete King at the dinner. "They follow the Marine code; no
one is left behind on the battlefield
either those killed or the children of
those killed. It is an honor to be here
with the heart of America."

Dear MC-LEF,
I am writing to express my deep gratitude for the
savings bonds that your organization, the Marine Corps - Law
Enforcement Foundation, so generously gave to my daughter, Leah
Ryan Job. While her college education seems so far away, I am
very thankful to know that these funds will be available to help when
the time comes. It was an honor to have Admiral Smith in our home
to present the bonds to us, as well as to spend time visiting and
sharing a few stories and pictures of my husband, Ryan.
We continue to miss Ryan greatly, and this gesture is a real
encouragement as Leah and I move forward in life together. Thank
you for what you have done for us ... and what you continue to do
for others.
Gratefully,

To the Staff of
The Marine Corp - Law Enforcement Foundation:
The reason for me to write this letter is to thank your organization for providing such an exceptional service. I was severely injured
in Iraq in 2003 during the initial invasion and parts of my body were
disfigured and looked unsightly. So with having to deal with a physical limitation, I also had to deal with the overall aesthetics of my
body. This was a process that I had to endure since my return. One
of the major disfigurements to my body was to my abdomen. I suffered abdominal compartment syndrome that was repaired with a
skin graph. With this level of trauma, I realized that I would always
be self conscious with the appearance of my abdomen.
Fortunately, I contacted the Marine Corp - Law Enforcement
Foundation and they provided the surgery to repair my abdomen. I
want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for assisting with my
readjustment process. It's because of Americans like you that make
this country worth fighting for. I want to personally thank the following board members for their altruism and countless selfless acts;
Dick Torykian, Pete Haas, Sue Bulhosa and Bill Venezia.
Most importantly, I want to thank and commend Dr. Spero J.
Theodorou. Dr. Theodorou displayed a high level of professionalism
that I have never experienced from another physician since my
return from Iraq. The quality of service that he provided was second
to none. In addition, his colleague Dr. Christopher T. Chia provided
the same quality of service. The both of them collaborated with my
procedure and the results were amazing. At this time, I can honestly say that a piece of me has been repaired both mentally and physically. This was only possible with the help of the Marine Corp - Law
Enforcement Foundation. Thank you and Semper Fidelis!
Sincerely,
Hector L. Delgado, Cpl/USMC Ret.
MC-LEF,
Words cannot describe how thankful I am. You have
helped me so much and I am so grateful for you. I come
from a divorced Catholic family and we definitely struggle,
but my mom was strong and worked 2 and sometime 3
jobs to make sure we had what we needed, but her regret
was that she wasn’t able to save money for my sister,
brother and I to go to school so we three are paying for
our education. Cal Lutheran is my dream school. It has
one of the best Psychology departments I know and will
help me reach my goal of becoming a marriage and family therapist. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for
your generous gift.
I will never forget how you have helped me. I hope it
is alright that I keep in touch and send you updates on my
schooling? Thank you again for your help!
I will not let you down, I promise.

Where Values Make A Difference
Dear MC-LEF,
On behalf of the men and women of the Chandler Police Department, we thank
you for the generous donation made to the children of our fallen officer and Marine
Corps veteran, Detective Carlos Ledesma, by the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement
Foundation. Your generosity will guarantee Carlos's sons, Luciano and Elijio, receive
a college education and free his widow Sherry from having to meet this financial burden in the future. When she and the boys were presented with the scholarships,
Sherry was deeply moved by this gesture and wished to express her heartfelt appreciation.
The Marine Corps and law enforcement share a strong tradition of taking care of
their own. Your organization is a blessing to the families you assist and truly embodies the spirit of "Semper Fidelis."
Sincerely,

MassHousing's Tom Lyons Appointed to VA Committee
on Homeless Veterans
Will advise VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki on the needs and programs for the homeless
BOSTON - May 5, 2011 - MassHousing's Manager of Community
Services Tom Lyons has been appointed to a national advisory committee on
homeless veterans by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
Lyons, a Wakefield resident who has been MassHousing's Manager of
Community Services for nine years, was named by Shinseki to the
Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on Homeless
Veterans. As a committee member, Lyons will provide advice on issues
related to the needs of homeless veterans and assess the effectiveness of VA
policies and programs for homeless veterans.
"I am honored to be appointed by Secretary Eric Shinseki to this very
important committee to end homelessness among our nation's veterans," said
Lyons. " I believe my 30 years experience within the veterans' community
Tom Lyons
at the local and state levels will bring a different and unique perspective to
help end this epidemic of homelessness and return the dignity and respect
that these men and women have earned through their selfless service to America."
Lyons was selected by Governor Deval Patrick and Lt. Governor Timothy Murray to co-chair the Governor's
Veterans Advisory Council Subcommittee on Veterans Housing in 2008. As a result, Lyons was involved in
the creation of MassHousing's A Home for the Brave mortgage program for Massachusetts veterans, which was
announced by the Patrick-Murray administration July 2008.
In January 2011, Lyons was appointed by Governor Patrick to serve on the Board of Directors for the
Chelsea Soldiers Home.
He recently was honored by the University of Massachusetts at Boston with the Robert H. Quinn Award for
Outstanding Community Leadership for his 30 years of work on behalf of veterans and their families.
Lyons, a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and a South Boston native, spent 10 years as Boston's
Deputy Commissioner for Veterans and seven years as Executive Director of the New England Shelter for
Homeless Veterans before joining MassHousing.
He is a founding member of the committee that created the South Boston Vietnam Veterans Memorial in
1981 and the founder and president of the Boston Semper Fidelis Society, which every November hosts the
nation's largest annual Marine Corps Birthday luncheon and assists with charitable efforts for veterans and their
families.
MC-LEF
COMMITMENT
Supporters of the Marine Corps-L a w E n f o r c e m e n t
F o u n d a t i o n , MCLEF, strongly believe that our nation's
most precious resource is its youth. Since its inception in
February 1995, MC-LEF, through the continuous support of
our donors, has distributed aid with a value of more than
$43,000,000 to eligible children.
This assistance has primarily been rendered to children
of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were
killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances
while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds
enable us to provide these children with scholarships for
their higher education.
The recent war in Iraq has certainly illuminated America's
commitment to freedom. We are reminded that freedom is
not free. The price is great. No one knows that better than
Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation
the left-behind sons and daughters of America's fallen
heroes.
Ninety-eight percent of all donations received are used to
fund programs for the children we serve and are completely tax deductible. This assistance has had a positive, lifechanging effect on many, many children.
With your support we can continue to encourage the spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical development of children through education.
MCLEF is certified as one of America's Best Charities by
Independent Charities of America.
The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation is a 501(c)3
charity, IRS tax # 22-3357410, and is also registered to participate in the Combined Federal Campaigns (CFC #10507).

To Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation:
Fortunately, I haw had another successful year at
Emerson College and with only one more year to go I
need to learn as much as I can while I still have the
opportunity. Both semesters I worked hard enough to
make Emerson's Dean's List with a 3.7 GPA. Hopefully I
will be able to maintain that distinction this coming Fall
semester as I finish all my requirements for both my
major, Theatre Education, and my recently acquired
minor, Hearing and Deafness. Come the Spring semester I will be student teaching in order to get my licensure
in time for graduation. Obviously I am having a wonderful time at my school and although I look forward to graduation next year, I must admit I wish I had more time to
experience everything the college has to offer. With all
my activities and classes I barely have time for myself
sometimes but at the end of the year it's always well
worth the hard work. I cannot thank you enough for the
generosity of the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement
Foundation these past years. It is because of my supporters that I am able to take part in all the events that I
do on campus and it does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. I hope that once I graduate and begin my career
that everyone will see how important all their support has
been to not only me but also my work with young students as well as the acts. Thank you again for helping
me to complete another successful year and I hope that
with a continued scholarship from the Foundation, my
Senior year will be the perfect jumping-off point for my
career in education.
Best wishes to you,
Maura
Emerson College Class of 2012
Dear Marine MC-LEF Members,
On behalf of my family and myself, I would like to thank you
formally for your generous gift towards my studies at The
College of William and Mary. It means so much to me to
have gained the support of not only the admissions staff at
William and Mary, but also from the prestigious Marine
Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. This scholarship has
certainly eased the burden of the expense of college I will be
experiencing in the next four years.
I am so grateful for originations like your own that are dedicated to education, something I am so passionate about. As
I explore and discover in college, I will certainly uphold your
mission statement, becoming both intellectually and physically more developed. I can't wait to be able to step foot into
the world and give back to our country, as it has already
given so much to me. I have built a strong character during
the first 18 years of my life and now strive to give back to
those around me. I am so lucky to be a part of the greatest
country in the world and will strive to add to our country's
legacy as so many have before me.
Once again I would like to thank you in the Marine CorpsLaw Enforcement Foundation for this scholarship. From all
that I have heard from my grandfather and others around
me, your organization is second to none and is supported by
many amazing people. It's humbling to have a connection to
an organization as incredible as your own and to understand
how lucky I and many others in our country are due to your
organization.
Thank You and Best Regards,
Ryan

NORTH JERSEY
GOLF EVENT 2011
By Col Dick Walters, USMC (Ret)
Photos by Warren Westura
After a rain delay of 10 weeks the 16th Annual MC-LEF
Foundation, North Jersey Golf event was held on July 28th
at the Picatinny Golf Course.
Seventy-one golfers enjoyed the Jersey sunshine, on the
well manicured golf course in Morris County. In addition
to the golfers 24 more helpers and guests attended the
awards and raffle dinner held at the base club.
This year's event was dedicated to the memory of
Colonel Joe Molitoris, a long time supporter of this event
since it's inception, who passed away in January. Joe's son
Tom and his daughter Patty, Lt. Colonel USMC (Ret)
helped to make this event successful through their participation and generous financial support.
At morning colors, 3 Marines, from the I and I staff of
G-2-25, stationed at Picatinny Arsenal, raised the colors on
the golf course flag pole with typical Marine Corps pomp
and ceremony.
Prior to the flag raising, Colonel Dick Walters USMC
(Ret) read the original request from Captain R. M. Cook,
C.O. G-3-26, for a Silver Star Medal to Sergeant Jim
Salerno, during the Iwo Jima campaign in 1945. Jim and
his family have been ardent supporters of all North Jersey
Events for many years. Colonel Walters also presented Jim
with a miniature K-Bar as a token of the organization's
esteem for his accomplishment on that volcanic island, way
back in 1945.
Other awards presented during the evening dinner are as
follows:

The auction held after dinner featured some of Colonel
Charles Waterhouse prints. The one belonging to Colonel
Joe Molitoris was offered for auction by his family.
As we know and understand events, such as this just
doesn't happen; they happen because of a hard working
group of dedicated volunteers. Our event was fortunate to
have the help of many, however there was a corps of key
assistants to the General Chairman that did yeoman's work
and they were:
Nick Ciampo, Angelo Oliva, Hermann Alstede, Joe
Garvey, Tommy Molitoris and Al Lies.
