12:00 pm - Midvale Country Club
WINTER/SPRING 2014
President’s Message
Dear Members,
The Board of Governors has been very busy during the winter
months. Midvale Country Club’s recent loan consolidation and
refinance lowered our interest rate payments and freed up capital
allowing for many areas of improvement to the clubhouse.
Through member feedback and committee input, the areas
targeted for improvement include the clubhouse woodwork,
window treatments, restroom vanities and fixtures, domestic hot
water system, cosmetic wall covering repairs and new Grill Room
and Meeting Room chairs.
This project is well underway, with completion projected by
Memorial Day. I would like to express sincere thanks to the
committee chaired by Mike Golanka and Joseph Fiorie. Additional
gratitude is extended to the Women’s Association for their much
welcomed input.
This is also the time of year when members make decisions
to renew their membership. I encourage you to continue your
membership. We have a proven track record of success. Over the
next thirty days, you will be contacted by a member of the Board
to extend a sincere thank you for your membership, but, more
importantly, to answer any questions you may have pertaining to
our new member incentive program and to share your thoughts
and ideas to enhance your Club experience.
As a club, we always remain mindful of the family financial
concerns that we all face. When all such issues are considered, the
Midvale experience is the best value in our market.
As I embark on the last three months of my club presidency,
I would like to share with you that the experience has been
rewarding. I offer special thanks to an energetic and innovative
Board, along with a superior management team, and, of course, a
fabulous membership. I hope you are as proud of the club as I am.
I am certain that the future leadership will continue to enhance
the positive experience of all.
Very truly yours,
Glenn Pezzulo

A Message from Your
General Manager
am sure that you share in the desire for the return of warm temperatures here in Rochester. It has been one of the coldest winters to date
with the average range of temperatures between 21° and 35°. The coldest recorded temperature last month was --4°. We know it is cold when
even the skiers are complaining about the temperature.
No need to worry,
as Spring is quickly approaching and the sun
is bound to surface one
of these days. While
many members have
been staying warm inside, your club has been
making great strides in
the progress of the
clubhouse refreshing
project.
The clubhouse
refreshing project encompassed a variety of minor renovations including: refreshing all of the beautiful cherry woodwork throughout the
clubhouse; new window treatments throughout the entire clubhouse
perimeter; restroom counter and faucet replacement; domestic hot
water system upgrade; new dining chairs and tables throughout the
entire clubhouse; and wallpaper cosmetic repairs.
The refreshing project has been financed through operations and
will ensure that our clubhouse amenities remain at the high level of the
club’s standards. All of the above improvements will be completed by
Memorial Day to enhance your summer experience at the club.
I
Minimum Spending Requirement Reminder
Member’s minimum spending requirements must be used by March
31st, 2014. Members who have not reached their minimum spending
requirement are able to verify their current remaining spending
balance on their monthly statements. Your monthly statement will
indicate your balance due with the following sentence located in the
bottom right corner of your statement:
“Post-Billed amount of $XXX.XX remaining,
to be used by 03/31/14.”
The above sentence will be omitted for any members who have
surpassed their minimum spending requirement. If in question,
please call the main office at your convenience.
I am so fortunate to be a part of the management team of Midvale
Country Club, as we truly have a lot to be proud of. Midvale Country
Club has proven to be a leader in the private country club experience
even during the recent economically challenging times.
The secret of the club’s success is YOU. Your continued support and
participation have allowed Midvale Country Club to continue to grow
during these challenging times. While it is true that we have experienced
year-end deficits over the past few years, these deficits have been fractional in comparison to our competitors.
By now, the word is out about Midvale Country Club’s New Member
Lottery as flyers, videos and e-mails have been sent to the membership
describing the program in detail. In summary, for each new member
you sponsor into membership, you will earn one chance for the annual
lottery. The annual lottery drawing is scheduled to be held during the
Annual Membership Meeting each year in March. One randomly drawn
member will receive One Full Year of Complimentary Dues. All other
membership fees apply, but the dues portion is waived for one complete
fiscal year beginning April first of the upcoming year. As an added incentive, your sponsored member will receive a waived initiation fee. Our first
Lottery Drawing is scheduled for March 30th, so we encourage you to
start recruiting new members today!
In closing, thank you for your past support as the future is looking
bright. I encourage you to make Midvale Country Club your home away
from home as it is our intention to continue to offer a wide variety of
activities for your entire family to enjoy.
Sincerely,
Rich Marr, General Manager

Executive Chef’s Corner
our culinary team is gearing up for another exciting season! The
newest dinner menu has been well received and the new additions are getting rave reviews. The Bang Bang Shrimp Appetizer,
Grilled Swordfish, Shrimp Florentine, Roasted Duck and BaconWrapped Pork Tenderloin are some of the early member favorites.
Plans are in place for our next menu revision just prior to summer.
Our lunch menu is also due for a refreshing as we add some new
twists to the salad and sandwich menus. While members will always
be able to order their traditional favorites like our turkey club, fried
bologna sandwich and cobb salad, new additions will be offered, such
as an Italian Deli Melt served on an herb ciabatta roll with basil mayo,
provolone cheese and roasted tomatoes. Some additional new modern salads and sandwiches featuring our fresh Pretzel Roll are just a
couple more examples of what to expect.
In addition to a refreshed lunch menu, members will notice a
more efficient service to complement the cuisine, as minor revisions
have been made to our pantry in order to expedite lunch entrees. We
thank you for your patience in the past, but look forward to a faster
lunch pace in the near future.
It is surprising to imagine that eight years have gone by since I
was named Executive Chef. I am grateful that my culinary education
and vast experience have gifted me with the capability to handle large
food volumes while maintaining high standards, as Midvale Country
Club has certainly been a culinary destination for the members to
enjoy.
I am not surprised to see special egg orders in the evening or a
special size steak, or even a modification from a menu item as members have truly made Midvale Country Club their home away from
home. I have even been fortunate enough to cater at members
home’s for special celebrations. It is the combination of everything
we do that makes being your Executive Chef a rewarding experience.
I encourage you to continue to make Midvale Country Club your
restaurant of choice! From our weekly and specialty brunches to our
elegant dining and social activities, you will find that Midvale Country
Club plans on exceeding your culinary expectations.
As a reminder, Brunch service is offered every Sunday between
11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Our weekly brunch features made to order
omelets, freshly-made Belgian Waffles, Carving Stations, Salad Bar,
and many other breakfast and lunch favorites plus coffee, decaf, tea
and juice. With Easter and Mother’s Day not too far away, I encourage you to plan early and make your table reservations as we are expecting sold-out attendance once again!
You may also want to try your luck in Midvale’s Crock Pot CookOff on Tuesday, April 1st, as members will be able to compete for a
Complimentary Certificate to our upcoming Mother’s Day Brunch.
Categories will include Comfort Food, Family Favorites and Innovative Recipes. Samplers welcome.

Golf Course Report
A Note from our Grounds Chairman, Mike Alesi
he countdown to SPRING is on as we begin to get closer to the
start of the 2014 Golf Season. We just need to melt the snow,
warm the temperature and bring back the sunshine in order to get the
members back on their golf course.
A special thank you to the two hundred plus members who
attended the celebration in honor of our long standing Golf Course
Superintendent, Rick Christie this past November. Rick and his wife,
Mary, were most appreciative of the kind words which the members
shared with them that evening.
As we are grateful for the 35 plus years of service Rick Christie has
given to the Midvale Country Club membership, the transitional plan
is to retain Rick in part-time status for a couple of years while Midvale
Country Club’s new Golf Course Superintendent, Nevin Hess, begins
his journey as Midvale Country Club’s top agronomist.
While this might seem like a surprise to some members, this transition has been in the works for the past three years. When Nevin was
hired as our Assistant Superintendent two years ago, he was given the
incentive to prove himself and later be offered the opportunity to be
promoted to Midvale Country Club’s next Golf Course Superintendent. We now have the best of both worlds as Nevin’s experience and
modern philosophy, coupled with Rick Christie’s vast experience and
part-time support, will ensure his continued progression. We hope
that you share in this excitement as Nevin takes on his new role that
T
focuses on continuing our steady progress towards raising the standards to new limits.
On the equipment side, Midvale Country Club has been able to
negotiate new equipment leases this winter, securing new rough and
fairway mowers. This should assist with the maintenance of the rough
height as requested by the membership. In addition, a hydraulic equipment lift has been installed, enabling our equipment mechanic to
more efficiently perform the preventative equipment maintenance.
2014 Golf Course
Maintenance Plan
riorities are being re-focused on our bunker playability as
member feedback has indicated an inconsistency in sand depth
and playability. Each of Midvale Country Club’s seventy-one golf
course bunkers will be inspected for sand depth, liner safety and
playability. Adjustments will be made as necessary to ensure consistency. Revised grooming procedures will be geared toward maintaining a firm sand playability.
Another priority will be the targeting of broadleaf and weeds
throughout the course. This winter we have also equipped ourselves
with a portable spray tank, allowing our staff the ability to target areas
missed by our large spray rig. Don’t be surprised if you notice spot
weed spraying throughout your round of golf this spring.
While we are looking forward to an early 2014 Golf Season, we
must remind the members that the turf becomes very brittle during
the harsh Rochester winter. As ground temperatures warm, surface
water will begin to disappear. Once the surface water has all drained,
we must wait until the turf firms up enough in to receive foot traffic.
We ask that you refrain from the temptation of walking on the
regulation greens until it has been deemed safe to do so. Until
then, please utilize the temporary greens painted just shy of the
regulation greens.
P
Golf Shop News
he Golf Shop opens for the season on March 15th! Until then,
members are utilizing the heated comforts of our Winter Paddle
Hut. Thankfully there was not much merchandise to move, as our
members took advantage of the late season sales last year.
Each year during the last week of January, the Professional Golfer
Association hosts their annual conference at the Orange Country
Convention center in Orlando, Florida. This is the perfect forum to
see, touch, feel and try all of the new fashions and equipment
advancements. Midvale Country Club’s head golf professional, Mike
Kiel, returned from this year’s conference with exciting news as
apparel companies have continued the trend of sport tech materials
and colorful patterns. It looks like Under Armour will be closing the
T
5
gap on Puma and Adidas’ market share.
One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s show was in
Women’s fashions as multiple new companies stormed the market with
the perfect combination of form and fashion. Stop in early to see the
new arrivals as you will be equally excited by the new 2014 trends.
The major club manufacturers of Titleist, Cobra, Taylormade, Ping
and Callaway all introduced revised technologies geared toward giving
their players the advantage. The reality of it is, clubs must fit each
golfer, and look and feel comfortable during the golf swing, as each
golfer has a bit of a different eye. The analogy is similar to sports cars—
many look great and drive fast, but until you get inside and drive it for
yourself, you would never know for sure.
Just for the above reason, each of the major club makers will be
featuring a demo day on Midvale’s practice range in order to allow you
to test-drive their equipment. In addition, our professional staff will be
happy to join you as they will be able to confirm that the demo club’s
specifics are properly fit for your swing. All of the demo days will be
posted in the golf shop and locker rooms, so please mark the dates on
your calendars.
While the winter weather keeps us guessing as to when the 2014
golf season will officially start, I encourage you to dust off your clubs
and check them for spring condition. I recommend that you start by
analyzing the grips on each club, as some or all may need replacing
prior to the season’s start. In addition, look at each of the club’s shafts
for any dings or dents as these could lead to injury and/or errant shots.
It is always easier to re-shaft a club now rather than the day before a
big tournament or match.
All club repair will be specially priced from March 15th through
March 31st to encourage you to examine your equipment early. In the
event that you have any questions, just ask one of our professional staff
as they would be happy to assist.
The tentative 2014 Tournament Schedule has been drafted, and
includes a full season of Guest days, Invitational, and Member-member
Tournaments, plus more. Please see the tentative tournament dates on
page 6 for your review.

am excited to begin my second year as the President of the Women’s
Association as the experience has been refreshing and rewarding. Your
Women’s Association is truly focused on the enhancement of the ladies
and family events held at the club. The attention to detail is what makes
our events stand out over the rest as evident by the multiple themed
winter events and special touches at the tournaments last season.
This season will be equally exciting as golf, tennis and swimming
events continue to evolve from one year to the next. I am fortunate to
have such a supportive association which volunteers for any task asked.
Please take a moment to review the list of officers for the Women’s
Association as they are the reason for our recent successes. For any of our
Midvale Women who might be interested in learning more about being a
part of our success, we welcome you with open arms. Just send me a quick
e-mail to: [email protected].
I encourage you to stay active throughout the winter months, as the
Womens Association’s theme nights are just as fun as our golf, swimming
and tennis activities.
Each year, the member’s WA contribution is targeted to an enhancement of the club. I am happy to announce that this year’s enhancement
will be the addition of a structured awning covering the South end of the
Kiddie Pool. This will protect the children from any potential errant golf
shots from the golf course’s 6th tee, as well as to provide shade for those
moms and dads in the Kiddie Pool area. I would like to thank each and
every member for the contribution as it is put to good use.

DRESS CODE
REMINDER:
Did you know that the most common
dress code violation is denim?
Due to the continued violations, your Board of
Governors have begun discussions regarding
revising our Dress Code to allow for some
future denim opportunities.
For now, you are encouraged to abide by the
current dress code. Please remember to remind all
of your new guests to the club as this has been a
common member over-sight. It is the member’s
responsibility to ensure that any and all of their
guests are in compliance with our dress code.
Please understand that dress codes are in place
for your protection. Midvale Country Club does
indeed have high standards, but remember these
standards are what set us apart from the others.
Your Board of Governors have begun to investigate
dress code revisions by establishing pilot member
groups to collect feedback. Members will also be
able to participate in a survey regarding our Dress
Code to ensure that we are offering the appropriate
club experience to our members.
