throughout the summer
competition. Trevor Taylforth was
undoubtedly his nearest rival and in
fact Trevor’s only defeats came at
the hands of Jarryd.

Bruce Eaton also enjoyed a
productive season chalking up
twelve wins from his twenty
matches.

BEILKEN BAFFLED &
BEWILDERED
The committee recently received
correspondence from a very
confused Craig Beilken seeking
clarification as to his playing status
given that in recent times he has
been playing A3 grade left handed
and B2 grade right handed. His
rambling and rather incoherent
letter in part read as follows:_
“Due to injury I have been playing
with my non-preferred right hand
in B2 and have recently started
playing with my preferred left hand
in A3. Whilst my A3 form has been
poor and warrants demotion to B1,
my B2 form has been good and I am
hoping for promotion to B1. This
leads me to my conundrum…. Is
there anything in the rulebook that
says I can’t play myself and if not
can I have a “Ball Boy” as I would
obviously be very busy running
around the table. If I do play by
myself do I need to play two sets of
pennant fees?”
These are obviously the ramblings
of a very disturbed individual and it
goes without saying that the
committee will not entertain such
nonsense. For the record it was
decided that Beilken would not be
allowed to play left and right
handed on the same one-man team.
EXTENSION UPDATE
Final works in respect of our four
new courts were completed just
days before the official opening of
the modernized Civic Reserve
Leisure Centre which of course also
coincided with our Association’s
50th birthday celebrations. I don’t
know about any other club
members who attended the Open
day, but I personally felt very proud
to be a member of what must now
one of the best table tennis stadiums
in the State. It was wonderful to see
so many people wandering through
the stadium and taking advantage of
the free use of the tables over the
weekend. Commonwealth Games
representative Heming Hu, and
basketball star Andrew Gaze were
also on hand to help us celebrate
what was a wonderful opportunity
for us to showcase the club and
what we offer.
ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP
Our four new courts were put to
good use when 65 players turned
out for this annual event. Jarryd
Cathcart (-25) eventually took the
honours after recording a win over
Trevor Taylforth (-24) in the final.
ELITE SQUAD
Current club singles champion, Sam
Palmer has been instrumental in
establishing this squad consisting of
players who want to take their
game to the next level. Squad
members will train and play
competition on Tuesday nights
whilst also attending practice
sessions on Sunday mornings. The
aim of the squad is to provide
dedicated and hard working players
with fast tracked pathways into the
club’s top divisions and other
tournaments.
FAMILY FUED IN C3
In the tradition of great family feuds
and battles of the past the Haugens
and the Schmidts found themselves
battling it out for gold in the club’s
C3 division last season. For the
record it was Peder and Eric
Haugen who enjoyed a 3-1 win in
the final over David and Ben
Schmidt. Not content with their
victory, the Haugen family has
bolstered their stocks by
introducing Ben and Sarah Haugen
to club competition.
C2 UPSET UNDER THE
MICROSCOPE
If ASADA thought they had their
hands full with the long running
Essendon saga, they may now have
to turn their attention to the results
of last season’s C2 final. Shane
Mason and Jurgen Debrodt went
into the gold medal final undefeated
and with a staggering percentage of
268.89, whilst their opponents
Allan Millen and Shirley Hanton on
the other hand snuck into the final
with a 6-3 record. However in a
match that is still being heavily
scrutinised, Allan and Shirley
managed to secure an unlikely 3-1
victory. B sample results are still
pending.
MORNINGTON OPEN
(SENIOR & AWD)
For the first time in over a decade
we will be hosting this tournament
at our newly expanded stadium on
May 24. Commonwealth Games
representatives Heming Hu and Jian
Fang Lay are amongst the players
competing for winner’s cheques of
$600 and $300 in the men’s and
women’s singles events
respectively.
