Early Years News
The children were very lucky last week when Mrs Curtis came into little Belmont to talk to us about
Diwali. We were shown the special clothes and jewellery that is worn and tasted some delicious spicy
samosas. We made some Rangoli mats to bring good luck to the class!
We have also had great fun building rockets to go to the moon!!

Geography Quiz at Lancing College
On Thursday 6th November, six children from Belmont travelled to Lancing College to take part in a
Geography Quiz. The team consisted of Molly, Henry, Tom, Ludo, Conrad and Ollie. There were 14
teams at the Quiz and Belmont finished in the top half. Questions varied from what is the most
sparsely populated continent to completing an OS mapping trail to discover where a pirate had
buried treasure! Great fun was had by all the competitors and it was very pleasing to see the depth
of the children’s knowledge.

The children have been busy
in the Mews. Below you will
see two photographs of
Reception and Year 1.
Year 1 used tea bags to
create a magnificent
firework display for the
classroom.

Year 2 News
On Friday 7th November all the
boys in Year 2 took part in their
first Football Tournament at
Longacre School. They played
with great enthusiasm and team
spirit and were rewarded with a
well-deserved medal and
certificate, (along with a
Cadburys Curly Wurly) at the end
of the day. Well done boys!

Year 2 Visit to The Observatory & Science Centre, Herstmanceux
On Friday 14th November 2MJ had an educational outing to The Observatory and Science
Centre at Herstmonceux, Sussex. They were introduced to the ‘Domes of Discovery’
enjoying a telescope tour with Steve, who was a mine of information and told them the
Story of the Royal Observatory in both Greenwich and Herstmonceux.
The children also had a great time experiencing over 100 exciting exhibits in the Science
Centre and of course time spent making purchases in the observatory shop, before heading
back to school. A lovely day was had by all.

Boarding News
The boarders enjoyed a party to celebrate Bonfire Night. After the traditional burning of the
guy (made at home by Ludo) and a spectacular fireworks display, we enjoyed some special food
made by Phil. The ‘mummy dogs’ and the toffee apples were particularly popular! Next came
the chocolate game which was fiercely competitive then some brave souls tried apple bobbing.
This has become an extremely popular event in the boarding house and we are looking forward
to next year already!

Belmont Boy Stars for England
Ex Belmont pupil George Kruis recently represented England against the New Zealand All
Blacks at Twickenham. George attended Belmont and played his rugby at the local club in
Dorking before finally signing as a professional at Saracens. This is obviously a marvellous
achievement and will hopefully be the first of many more England caps.
George serves as a fine example to the current crop of Belmont pupils, and a source of
motivation for the Sports department who have put many changes in place in recent years to
identify and develop our young talent. At Belmont we really do believe in Long Term Athlete
Development and the core skills that we nurture here are the foundation for future success.
Well done George, everyone at Belmont is very proud of you.
Science Day at King Edward’s, Witley
Year 7 attended an amazing lecture by Michael Faraday, made all the more amazing since he
died in 1867! We were treated to an enjoyable and unique insight into his life, discoveries and
inventions. The event was held at King Edward’s, Witley and all our pupils received
a goodie bag from the school.

Belmont Remembers …
All the children at Belmont took part in the nationwide day of reflection last week for the
service personnel who gave their lives in conflicts over the past 100 years.
Year 2 (see photograph below) were inspired by the ceramic poppy art installation ‘Blood
Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ created by the artist Paul Cummins at the Tower of London. In
DT lessons they were very pleased with their own versions completed last week in time for
Armistice Day. In addition, as part of their History focus on Remembrance, 2MJ went to visit
the local War Memorial in Cranleigh. They spent time looking at the wreaths, sketching the
stonework and were most respectful when remembering those who have fallen. All children in
Year 3-8 took part in a WW1 Workshop in which they made a replica version of the Whitehall
Cenotaph.
Finally, Mrs Skrine led a poignant Service of Remembrance on the gravel in front of the
Feldemore building for children in Years 2 to 8.

Friends of Belmont News
The Belmont Christmas Fair is on Saturday 29th November 2014 from 10am to 2pm and Friends of
Belmont relies heavily on the support of the parents to make it happen. Here's how we would really
appreciate your help this year:
Volunteer Helpers
On the day of the Fair - we need as much help as possible to staff the stalls and serve refreshments.
Please contact me directly on e-mail [email protected] or text 07590 464119 if you are able to
help.
Time slots are as follows: 10.00 – 11.00am, 11.00 – 12.00pm, 12.00 – 1.00pm, 1.00 – 2.00pm
Secrets Stall
This stall is a highlight for the children as they come in here independently to buy Christmas
presents for their Mums, Dads, Grandparents and siblings. To make this a success we need stock.
Please can you bring in any unwanted items to school for this stall. Popular items include jewellery,
candles, books, beauty products and ties. Any spare Christmas wrap, boxes, ribbons & bows would
also be gratefully received. Your donations can be placed in our golden Christmas boxes situated in
the main hall, outside the Mews and Little Belmont and in Moon Hall reception from Monday.
Tombola
Any bottles of booze, soft drinks, tins of sweets (NUT FREE) would be gratefully received for the
always popular Tombola Stall. Please leave these items in our golden Christmas boxes as above.
Cakes
A week before the Fair, a paper plate will come home for parents to place a cake on and return to
school for the Cake Stall on Friday, 28th November. Homemade cakes were particularly popular last
year (no pressure) but shop bought is fine - we don't mind as long as they are NUT FREE!
Christmas Hampers
Your form rep will be in touch soon to ask you to donate an item for the Christmas Hampers.
Raffle Tickets
Raffle tickets will be distributed to all parents next week. Ticket stubs and payment (cash or
cheques to Friends of Belmont) should be returned to the School Office by Friday, 28th November.
The prizes for the raffle are the Hampers put together by each year group and we have been lucky
to have a donation from Cranleigh Country Club for a year’s membership to the club.
Advertising
There is an opportunity for local businesses to advertise in the Christmas Fair brochure – please
contact me directly to discuss this opportunity. Prices are £50 for a full page, £25 for a half page
and £15 for a quarter page. Copy is required by 15th November.
Christmas Tea Towels
A reminder to parents of children in Little Belmont, Reception and Year 1 that our lovely FOB tea
towels featuring your child's self-portrait are available to buy from Taryn Timperlake
([email protected]). An order form is available on the school portal, or alternatively,
Taryn will be selling them at pick up time next Tuesday 11th November. Please bring your cheque
books!
Thank you all for your support – we look forward to seeing you all on Saturday, 29th November.
