The Verstaan kunstgalerie in Amsterdam, one of the leading art institutions in Europe, is hosting a
competition: the opportunity to curate what they promise will be one of the most exceptional
exhibitions of modern art Europe has seen this century. Artists, critics, and curators are invited to
submit. The competition will progress in two stages: an exhibition proposal and a catalogue entry.
Makers of Modernity
:: the Proposal
Select one of the artists shortlisted as the feature artist of the exhibition (limited to 3 students
per artist)
Research the artist, his/her work, the stylistic innovations and artistic aims, as well as the
cultural climate at the time the artist was active. Based on your research, write a 600-word
exhibition statement that describes the significance of the artist as a Maker of Modernity.
The proposal is not, however, a biography of the artist, or an analysis of the works selected for
exhibition. The proposal should consider the concerns and interests of the artist in broader
terms, and clearly outline why this artist is significant for Modernism. What is it about this
artist’s work that gives him/her the distinction of being a Maker of Modernity?
Note: the catalogue entry, due in October, will address the specific concerns of the works
selected, as well as the relationship of those works to their cultural context, in detail.
Requirements:
Your proposal must include the following:

Exhibition statement (600 words)

Reproduction of two works by the selected artist with captions (see MLA 5.7.6)

Bibliography of academic sources that address the artist, stylistic movement, or the
cultural context . The bibliography must be in MLA format.
Your sources must include the following:
3 monographs (a book written by a single author)
1 article from an anthology
2 articles from academic, peer-reviewed journals
1 general reference (ie. Groves Dictionary of Art)
Note: websites (anything that can be accessed through a Google search) will not be
accepted for this assignment.

Research Requirements
Your proposal should draw on at least 2 academic sources (not including the course textbook, or
art history survey texts). I general source will be accepted (an art history survey text, art-specific
dictionary or encyclopedia such as Grove’s). The remaining sources should be subject specific
studies and articles that are relevant to the artist chosen.
Resources NOT accepted for research: Web specific sources (web pages openly accessible),
additional art history survey texts, Reader’s Digest, Time Life, National Geographic , materials for
K-12, and similar sources will not be accepted for this assignment. This is a college paper;
research and resources are expected to move beyond Google, Wikipedia and Encyclopedia
Britannica.
Weight & Date Due
The proposal is worth 10% of the course grade. Papers are due September 16th. Late
assignments will not be accepted; papers not submitted on the date due will result in grade of 0
for the assignment.
2 copies are required: 1 hard copy submitted in class, and a copy by email. Both must be
submitted by 4pm for the assignment to be considered complete.
Citation & Plagiarism
You must cite all of your sources and use correct in-text citation methods. Papers that do
not sufficiently cite sources will receive an F regardless of the work that has been put in to
the assignment.
Citation is not just about crediting another person’s words, it is about crediting their thoughts,
ideas, and interpretations.
You must indicate a quote (word-for-word passages from a source) using both quotation marks
and an in-text citation indicating the source of the quote.
You must also credit someone else’s ideas and interpretations even when rephrased in your own
words. An in-text citation must accompany the borrowed information at the end of that sentence
(not the paragraph), or it is considered plagiarism and will result in an F for the assignment.
NB: Paraphrasing means presenting information in your own words. Switching out a few words,
rearranging the words from the original, or patching together sections from a few sources into a
single sentence is not paraphrasing, and will result in an F for plagiarism.

Writing Style
This paper should be in your own words- your explanation of your research, and not a string of
direct quotes. Be sure to proofread for grammar, spelling and clarity.
