Well this should be the Spring issue of the Purple Sage as
we have not put one out yet this year. And I owe you all an
apology for not getting this done sooner. I think it’s June
already, isn’t it?
If you haven’t been around lately, you don’t know that
Sharon and I bought a new house after being in the old one for
over 36 years. So, the Elbow Valley RR is now a thing of the
past and like Phoenix rising, a new Elbow Valley is in the works.
Tearing down my 25 year project has not been fun, but the idea
of a new, bigger double deck RR is oh so exciting. And so I
don’t forget, I need to say a big thank you to all of my 3rd Div.
friends for their help over the years. I would list them all by
name but you don’t have time to read such a long list. And as
you would expect I can’t remember all of it.
Enough about me and now for the good stuff. Here is what
I wrote to the PNR for an annual report.
Tom reported that several vandals descended on the
Elbow Valley recently, causing much damage to scenery. They
defended their actions by noting that the management had been
preparing to do just that, anyway, so they were just helping.
Considering management was among the vandals, the railroad
police decided to let the matter be and left to continue
preparations for relocating to bigger quarters at the new home
office.
‘The 3rd Division has pretty much recuperated
from putting on the Regional Convention last Summer.
We had a great crew, lots of wonderful participation and
most of all very positive comments from those who
attended. To all who attended, from near and far, we
thank you for sharing this great hobby with us!
The train show portion of the convention made
money due to the free rent associated with the
convention. Numerous folks in the area have asked that
we put on an annual show and we have a committee
looking into this.
So far this year we have added approximately
seven new members. Also we now have an official
membership chair and welcome letters are being drafted.
We are also working on changes to our by­laws to
include rules for rotating the three offices on a three year
basis. This does not mean an officer can’t run for their
position again.
We have had a wonderful web master for a
number of years, Bruce McCosh. He has recently passed
the job on Chris Mesa and we are now looking to put
ourselves on Facebook.
A number of the local members are planning to
attend this years Regional in Tacoma as we fully expect
yet another great convention.
As for me, I feel taking the reins of the 3rd
Division is a wonderful opportunity, one where we can
pull in the members to participate just a little more in

Sandy's article on the LP appears in the July/August issue
of N Scale Railroading. Very nice, although he sold the Gready
Mills logging operation to the Klearkut operation. I don't know
what else Sandy has in the pipe line, but given the number of N
scalers in the area I'm sure many more fine articles are a coming.

So to expand on the above, Chris Mesa has taken over as Web Master
and also as Membership Chairman. Skip Dautel continues as Secretary and
Jerry Thomas has taken on the 3Rd. Div. Treasures job. Warren Smith has
offered to run the Favorite Model Contest during the Spring and Fall Meets.
And speaking of the Fall Meet, we are locked on for September 27th
at the same place as the past meets.
The monthly business meeting was moved to Idaho Pizza Co. on
Fairview near Cole Road in Boise in order to get away from noisy video
game machines at the Overland store.
In closing, you can see that some changes have been made lately, so
check the web page often for the latest info.

permits to get into this small county fair. By the
way, the Humboldt County Fair was the first county
fair in California, dating back to the late 1800's.

California from the tallest trees in the world to
Victorian Villages like Ferndale used in a number of
Hollywood movies.

Spring Meet Contest Results

This year’s Spring Meet was
just a little different for me this time.
I asked Bruce Oberleitner to take
over running the contest as he has
been instrumental in helping me in
the past. As luck would have it,

Jim showed us the huge HO layout. It was multilayered
in Western scenery. In places the layout has three levels with a
fair amount of HOn3 track mostly working the mines. Club

Scale Rails of
Southwest Florida

Sometimes when
travelling model railroaders trip
upon a gem quite by accident.
Maybe this has happened to
you as it did to me when I was
visiting my father in Fort
Myers, Florida and found
Scale Rails of Southwest
Florida. Visiting on a regularly
scheduled Tuesday work
session, we were warmly
greeted by Dwight and Jim
who toured us around their
spacious layout building. At the entrance the club has a “for
kids only“ Lionel layout. Dwight showed us the N­Trak
members were demonstrating a high level of skill in completing
their tasks. The club has participated heavily with the NMRA
achievement program and clinics. Electronics and construction
techniques demonstrate skilful work. Look for Scale Rails to be
featured in MR in early 2016. If you end up near Fort Myers,

NMRA Secretary John Stevens has announced the results
of the voting which took place earlier this year for the Board and
Canadian officer positions.
Please note the results aren't considered official until the
Board of Directors meets this July in Cleveland and accepts the
report of the Ballot Committee.
