UPDATE ON OUR NEWPORT STORE
We’re happy to say that our Newport store is doing well. Susan and
Jan have all the guide classes scheduled as well as Bernina Club, Embroidery Club and Software Club. Please check the schedule and call or stop
in to sign up for classes. Remember that guide classes are free to you for
as long as you own your machine. We welcome all of our old Bangor
area customers to come to Newport to take their classes. We now carry
the Brother line of sewing machines in the Newport store at a very reasonable price loaded with features and very user friendly including some
Disney Embroidery Machines. Newport also carries Bernina feet as well

as a nice selection of threads and notions. They also stock Dakota Collectibles Embroidery designs. While you’re at Cote Bros. feel free to try
out any of the machines. You’ll love the new BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator). It has revolutionized free motion quilting.
While you’re in the store, check out Stitches Fabric and Yarn. They
recently received a new shipment of quilting fabrics. Stitches also offers
some great classes. It’s really east to find on Rt. 2 in Newport (Elm St.).
Its only 25 minutes South of Bangor and 30 minutes North of Waterville.

Sew Café is a sewing time for you to come in and just
sew. The coffee will be on and be free and so will the class.
This is just a great time to socialize, sew a project with other
sewers, make new friends, and just have fun. While there
won’t be a teacher in the classroom we will be available as
time permits to help you. There will also be other sewers
that may help as well. Bring in your machines or if you
would like to try one of ours feel free to test drive one at any
time. We have set aside this time for you and will have the
classroom available as much as possible (check the calendar). If you have some other ideas or things you would like
to do in this time let us know. This is a great time for friends
to get together.

“Fine Finishes”
With Sarah Ann Smith
Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 17th 10:00-4:00pm for
Sarah Ann Smith’s “Fine Finishes” class. Her April quilting class was
so popular that we decided to bring her back. In this class she will teach
you how to make PERFECT edges on your quilts including straight
grain, butted binding, bias double fold binding (French double fold),
faced edges including curved edges, piping to use as binding or an accent
on the bound edge. As well, she will discuss and, time permitting you
will learn how to make a few of these alternative edge including:
Prairie Points Scalloped edges Fused Bindings Alternatives to piping
Couched Yarn Triple-Stitch Accent Stitched Edges: Satin Stitch, Couched
yarns with zig-zag or blanket stitch “Bagged” back Striped/bias striped
bindings Back to front / underlap Sarah, who teaches a variety of quilting
classes, is an ardent quilter. She sells her art work and her own line of
quilting patterns that draw on quilting traditions, yet celebrate the artistic
individuality of the quilt maker. As a very young child, Sarah lived in
Spain, Thailand, and Argentina as her father, a former U.S. diplomat,
traveled while working for an oil company. Shortly after her sixth birthday, her family returned to the United States to live. It was then that a
neighbor girl made an apron for Sarah’s favorite doll, thus sparking a
fascination with textiles and fiber that continues to this day. Sarah has
quite a long list of accomplishments before you even include her sewing experience. She graduated from Georgetown University’s School of
Foreign Service: worked for a U.S. Congressman in Washington, D.C.:
earned a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School
of Law and Diplomacy and volunteered in Guinea-Bissau with Operation Crossroads Africa. Sarah served her first tour of duty for the U.S.
Foreign Service in Toronto, Canada. At that time, she lived across the
street from an Art Gallery and took her first drawing classes. Then, while
assigned to the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia, Sarah came across
someone’s old Keepsake Quilting catalog, and she was hooked! That
catalog became the catalyst to a whole new world for Sarah. She now
had found a way to use all of the things she loved and all of her art skills
to create the most fantastic projects.
Sarah has an extensive background in clothing construction, and
began quilting in the late 80’s. She started with traditional quilting
techniques and appliqué. When living on San Juan Island in Washington
State, Sarah started her own business doing custom sewing for the home.
During this time, she began working on art quilts. Sarah’s quilts have
been shown is both the juried show and the juried special exhibits at the
International Quilt Festival in Houston and Chicago. Her journal quilts
have traveled to Expo in Holland and have also been juried to the AQS
show in Paducah, the Pacific International Quilt Festival in California, the
Pacific Northwest Quilt Festival, the World Quilt and Textiles Show and
Quilt Hawaii ‘05 . Sarah has also been published in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, Janome International Digest, the APNQ Newsletter and
The Village Soup Times in Camden. Her decision to move to Maine was
based on her desire for her boys to receive a better education, but she
has also found here among the natives an appreciation and support of the
quilt artist.
Sarah is branching out with her upcoming “Loon-y About Maine”
series of patterns. Check out Sarah’s work at her website www.sarahannsmith.com and her blog at www.sarahannsmith.blogspot.com. Early
registration is recommended as Sarah’s classes fill up quickly.

THE BIG 50…
Cote Bros. Sewing Machines is 50 years old this year

Papercrafting With Your Sewing Machine
By Marlis Bennett
Sewing machine, paper, needles and thread-a new playground! Before
stitching on paper, read these tips to make the process smooth and easy.
As with any sewing project, make sure your machine is clean, oiled and
in good repair. Thread jams or pulls can wreck havoc on a paper project,
tearing away stitching and leaving holes in the paper. Unlike working on
fabric, holes will not go away and will cry out for creative embellishments.
You can sew on any type of paper. However, the weight of the paper will
dictate that stabilizer be used if either the paper is lightweight or the stitches
are dense. Use a fusible cut-away stabilizer or a temporary spray adhesive
such as HRFive to position the stabilizer on the back of the paper as needed.
Stabilizers are a paper’s best friend. Generally speaking, a cut-away stabilizer is preferred over a tear away stabilizer. There is a risk that the tear away
stabilizer will tear away from your paper leaving you with a mess. A good
stabilizer to try is Poly-Mesh. It is light enough to not add any weight to the
back of your work.
Needles come in a variety of sizes and types. Use an appropriate needle
for the thread and paper that you intend to use. Heavier paper and threads
require the use of larger needles, such as 90/14’s. Lightweight paper and
lighter threads can get by with 75/10’s. A general guideline should be that
the thread fills the hole created by the needle. Used sewing needles can be
used as long as they are not bent and are free from burrs. Paper dulls needles
quickly so be prepared to change needles frequently.
Threads are a designer’s paint palette. Any thread you would use for
sewing can be used when sewing on paper. The use of a heavier thread adds
more drama to your work. There are many new variegated threads on the
market and they create wonderful visual interest on your project. A slightly
reduced upper/needle tension usually gives the best results. Bobbin thread
should be used in your bobbin so as not to add more bulk to the back of your
work. Adjust your needle tension accordingly. Most importantly-test before
you sew! NEEDLE TID-BITS Topstitch needles-have larger eyes and are
suitable for heavier threads. These types of needles also leave large holes in
the paper when used with thinner threads!
Standard Universal needles-come in a variety of sizes and are commonly available. Use with regular sewing threads.
Metafil needles-intended to be used with metallic threads.
Quilting needles-have a sharp point, perfect for piercing paper.
Embroidery and Titanium embroidery needles-these needles have
a slightly larger eye so they are well suited for delicate embroidery type
threads. Titanium coated needles will last approximately 5 times longer than
regular embroidery needles.

Auburn Classes & Events
Basic Class Information: When you come to class, remember to bring your basic sewing supplies:
scissors, pins, seam ripper, thread, needles, tape measure, stabilizer, embroidery threads, etc. If you are
taking a specialty or quilting class perhaps you will need a rotary cutter or other special tools. Most class
projects will be completed in class, except for perhaps some handwork at home, such as binding of a
quilt.
We offer many types of classes, hands on sewing, lecture demo and computer classes. You may reserve a
place in class by phone, mail, or in person. A deposit of 50% of class cost is required to register and
the remainder is due on the first day of class. If you are planning to attend, call early. We do have
class minimums and unfortunately, sometimes they have to be cancelled. For scheduling purposes, if the
class minimum is not met, the class will be cancelled the Thursday before the week of the class. Please
sign up early!
Bernina Guide Classes: Guide classes are offered to everyone free of charge if they buy a machine at
Cote Brothers. Those who have bought machines elsewhere are welcome to join our class for $15.00 per
session. These classes are strongly recommended to owners of new machines as they not only teach you
how to use your machine, but also how to care for your new machine. Please register in advance. Check
the schedule for the time convenient for you.
The classes are broken down as follows:
Introduction to Bernina - For all Bernette and Bernina Owners: This class covers the first
lesson in the Mastery Guide. In this general overview, we will look at the entire machine and discuss the
function of each knob and button; we will also discuss threads, needles, threading and winding the bobbin, and how all combine to create the best stitch.
Bernina Practical Stitches - For all Bernette and Bernina Owners: This class covers lessons
two and three of the mastery guide. Each of the practical utility stitches and their functions will be
discussed and samples will be sewn out.
Bernina Decorative Stitches - For all Bernette and Bernina Owners: This class covers lessons
4 and 5 of the mastery guide. How to achieve your best decorative stitches and how to enter stitches into
the machine’s memory will be discussed and samples of each will be stitched out.
Bernina Embroidery – For Bernina Embroidery Owners: This class is for all of the owners of
Bernina Embroidery Machines. How to hook up the embroidery system and run basic embroidery functions will be covered.
Artista Extras - For Bernina Artista Owners: The last guide class for owners of Artistas:
covers chapters 6 and 7 of your mastery Guide and will concentrate on the functions, memories, set up
programs, creative consultant and directional stitch function capabilities of the Artistas. This class is offered on a varying schedule, so check the calendar for dates and times.
EC on PC for Aurora Owners
Brother Guide Classes: These guide classes are free to all customers who have purchased Brother
machines from Cote Bros. You are encouraged to take these guide classes more than once if you would
like, or if you feel like you need a refresher. These lessons will make you feel confident and comfortable with your machine. Please register in advance for a class. Check the calendar for a guide class time
convenient for you.

My husband wondered what happened to his life,
And to his somewhat organized wife.
The laundry’s piled high, the dished undone,
The kids have been having unthinkable fun.
As I truly must take some time to confess,
This house is in a terrible mess.

Technical Update
•
Artista 200E memory
has been upgraded to 64mb from
32mb, this helps it process faster
and allows for more storage space.
It will also boot up faster and
process all functions at a faster
rate. If you have a machine with
a serial number ending in 00 then
it is a 32mb and some of the later
ones came from the factory with
64mb if it ended in 01. We can upgrade your machine for the cost of
$100.00 you must call and schedule it so that we can make sure we
have the new circuit board in stock.
•
Artista machines that are
memory stick compatible. It has
come to our attention that when
you load a memory stick with more
than 64mb of memory that the
Artista’s can not read it because it
exceeds the machine memory. The
stick must be 64mb or less. It is
also advisable to load data in folders. The Artista 630E and 640E
will only read folders.
•
There is a software update
available for the Bernina Deco 330
and it is available on the Bernina
web site for free download www.
berninausa.com all you have to
do is download it your computer.
To get it to your machine it must
be transferred to a blank memory
card, you can do this with any
laptop, as they will write directly
to the card through the Pcmcia slot.
Write upgrade to the card and then
take the card to the machine and
upgrade machine. When you down
load the update you also download
the instructions.
•
Did you know that the
Pcmcia slot on your laptop will
also allow you to write a design to
a card and then take the card with
design to your machine including
all Artista’s like the 180, 185, 165,
200, and 730
•
You should oil your Bernina hook system 1 drop of oil for
every 2 whole bobbins of sewing!
•
When using a memory
stick with your Bernina sewing
machines it should be a Bernina
memory stick. If you use a generic
stick and you are having trouble we
won’t be able to help you. You will
have to call the company where
you got the stick. This is Bernina’s
policy.

The BERNINA® Stitch Regulator
-Your Tool For Easy Free-motion Stitching
By Marlis Bennett
The BERNINA Stitch Regulator is revolutionizing free-motion
stitching techniques. The stress
previously associated with freemotion sewing has been alleviated
with the addition of the BERNINA
Stitch Regulator to select BERNINA sewing machines. Presently,
the BSR is standard on the BERNINA aurora 440 and artista 730.
It is optional on the BERNINA artista 630 and 640 models. With the
addition of a purchased upgrade
kit, the BERNINA artista 200 can
also be part of the BSR family of
machines. The ease by which even
the novice free-motion stitcher can
achieve beautiful results is leading
to new exploration of this timehonored process.
Perfecting Your Free-motion Stitching Basic Training
•Attach BSR foot, lower feed
dogs, thread machine, activate
needle stop down, alternately select
Mode 1/Mode 2.
•Sink and then raise needle to
bring bobbin thread to top. Take
a couple of stitches to secure, trim
thread ends. With even speed,
move fabric front to back to get
feel of the machine. •Practice
using different motions: Zigzag,
Blocks, U’s, I’s, puzzle pieces
Painting by Number
Using a print fabric as a
guide, “color in” print areas using
a thread color slightly contrasting
the print to draw attention to the
stitching. Stitch direction should
follow the direction of the print.
For example, when stitching a
leaf, stitching should feather out
from the center of the leaf at an
angle, enhancing the shape. Build
up stitching slowly-less is more.
Use multiple shades of thread for
a more realistic appearance. Tip:
Select a fabric with a large print to
experiment with thread painting by
“following the lines”.
Tip: Thread paint on two
layers of polyester organza and
Aqua Film to create “embroidered
appliqués”.
Rocking Bobbin
Wind bobbin with heavier
thread, insert into second bobbin
case, and adjust tension on bobbin case. Working from the wrong
side of the fabric, stitch the desired
free-motion pattern. To secure
thread tails, use a tapestry needle to
pull bobbin thread to wrong side.
Tip: Be sure to keep a separate bobbin case specifically for
bobbin-work. When loosening the
tension, hold the bobbin case over
a container so that if the screw falls
out it will be caught.
Tip: Bobbin work is not just
for free-motion work. Use this
same technique with the feed dogs
up and machine decorative stitches.
run the Aurora embroidery, make
sure if the computer screen is
flashing an orange symbol that you
complete the task that is flashing
before continuing.

Software Dongle: please
take caution in putting the Dongle
in and out of your USB port and
also before you put it in check by
looking that you have it in the right
direction as it only goes one way
and you can damage it by trying
to force it. You also want to be
careful not to hit it because they
do break easy. Now that said, they
only have a one year warrantee and
Bernina is holding us to that one
year and the replacement cost is
several hundred dollars as this is
the main part of your software.
Correction: Susan Boulanger’s husband is Tim. In
the last newsletter, we inadvertently said he was Rick.
Our apologies on the mix up.
Adjust he stitch settings for more
variety.
Special points of interest:
Mode 1 with foot control
-Needle moves when foot
control is pressed
-Allows a securing stitch
-Sews like home machine
BUT with regular stitches Mode 1
without foot control
-Electric Needle
-Unplug foot control
-Use start/stop button and
needle starts moving
-Allows a securing stitch
Mode 2 with foot control
-Press foot control and move
fabric to make needle move up and
down
-Use Securing function to
lock stitches Note: Presser foot
Pressure is lowered to 1 when using both modes thereby allowing
easier movement of fabric under
the foot.
