Summer fishing is here! The waters are warm and the
muskies are moving. Let’s hope that the water
temperature stays well below 80 degrees all summer
long. I have heard reports of a lot of muskies being
caught throughout the Madison Chain.
Congratulations to all of you who have had some
success this year, and the best of luck to those of you
who are still pursuing the mighty muskie.
All of CCMI’s spring and summer events are over
now except for an On-the-Water meeting on Monday,
August 11th and the new Lake of the Woods Outing
from August 16 through August 23, 2014. At this
time, the LOTW outing is full, but please come and
enjoy the cookout and the company at the On-theWater meeting. We had a great turnout for our June
On-the-Water meeting, and I am looking forward to
seeing everyone again in August. It will be a
Goodland Park on Lake Waubesa. All of this year’s
events have been well attended, and I thank you for
your participation. And thanks, again, to the many
coordinators and volunteers who plan, organize, and
complete our various activities. Our club has much to
be proud of and it would not happen were it not for all
of the members who give their time and energy in
support of Cap City MI.
If you haven’t heard, the CCMI Wisconsin Youth
Muskie Championship was a great success and a lot of
fun. Twenty one youngsters participated, and five
muskies were caught, a 45.5", a 44.75", a 37", a 35.5",
and an undersized 28". Abraham Ruiz won the event
with his 45.5" muskie. Jordan Laridaen came in
second with his 44.75" muskie. If Jordan’s name
sounds familiar, it’s because he also won last year’s
Vilas County Outing contest.

No July Meeting
Due to many of our members either on vacation or
heading on one soon and especially board members,
we do not hold a July meeting. Make sure you make
plans to attend the August on the water meeting.
More details will be featured in next month’s
newsletter and on the Cap City MI web in the
meantime get out and fish.

In addition, four northern pike were caught by other
participants. Congratulations to all of the winners and
thank you all for participating. Mike Winther, the
coordinator of this year’s event, did a great job.
Thanks, Mike.
The results of the fishing at the Bill Wood Memorial
Outing in Sawyer County on June 21st are in. Five
30” or larger muskies were caught, one by Geoff
Crandall, one by Steve Reinstra, and three by
Gerard Hellenbrand. Gerard won the event contest
with a 41 ½ inch fish. Congratulations, Gerard. It was
a fun event with a lot of fish stories being shared at the
Saturday evening dinner. Thanks to Geoff Crandall
and John Eversoll for again doing all the work to
make this event happen.
I want to encourage you to participate in our new fall
outing scheduled for September 27, 2014 on Lake
Monona. This outing, the CCMI PIT TAG
Challunge, was planned with a purpose other than the
usual membership fishing event. We hope to increase
the data base for our DNR/CCMI muskie stocking
study. All participants will have access to an electronic
wand, and it is hoped that many muskies will be caught
and checked to see if they have implanted PIT tags.
The numbers on the PIT tags, of course, identify the
muskie as to when it was stocked and how big it was
when it was stocked. We are especially hoping that
some Leech Lake strain fish will be caught and
identified. So, join the fun and help us with our study.
More details are available on our website at
www.capcitymuskiesinc.org.
Finally, don’t forget our annual Vilas County Outing
scheduled on October 10 and 11, 2014. The
headquarters for this event is Fibber’s Inn and Resort
on Big St. Germain Lake in St. Germain, WI. Contact
Dale and Colette Anderson at 608-825-3080 or
[email protected] for information, or go our website
listed above.
Gerry Frantz with a dandy muskie from Lake Monona.
This fish measured 45 ½ inches and was caught on a
Musky Mayhem Cowgirl. Not only did he get this fish,
but two other smaller ones on Cowgirls as well. That is
one heck of a day on the lake, Gerry!

I wish you good fishing for the rest of this summer!
Don’t forget to register your fish on the Muskies, Inc.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
By Gerard Hellenbrand
822 S Gammon Rd #1, Madison, WI, 53719
608) 669 – 5046 E-mail [email protected]
Hello members, the summer is in full swing now –
finally! It’s been a tough early bite, but it should
get better.
Membership is often slow during the summer
months, however, we did have one new member
sign last month. His name is Nick Pierick and he
hails from Madison. Welcome Nick!!!
I have nothing else to add, but the lakes will be
crowded, especially here on the Madison Chain so
give your fellow angler a little space out there and
everyone can enjoy the water.
We all know those hybrids are one fantastic looking
fish with its very vivid “tiger” markings. Luke Vike
gets this 37 inch tiger on Lake Monona. He caught
hit muskie on a Rizzo Whiz which has been a
favorite spring bucktail. Good fish, Luke!!
.
Till next month………….

RELEASE REPORT
By Michael Winther [email protected] 608) 844 – 1382
Summer time, and the living is easy…well, those lyrics don’t apply perfectly, since muskie fishing is never
“easy,” but at least the fish are starting to bite and the peak activity time of the year is just around the corner.
Many members have started to register fish and a few people are even off to a fast start! The larger lakes are
producing fish and with July on our doorstep, many of you will be heading out on those summer fishing trips
to far away lakes. Good luck! Please send in the pictures of all those nice fish you catch so we can share
them on our website and Facebook page, as well as enter them in the contest for a free replica.
We had a couple more members catch large muskies:





Jordan Laridaen, 44.75” muskie, bucktail, Lake Waubesa
Gerry Frantz, 45” muskie, topwater, Lake Monona
Brian Wienski, 45” muskie, spinnerbait, Lake Waubesa
Abraham Ruiz, 45.5” muskie, bucktail, Lake Waubesa
Chad Naggs, 48” muskie, bucktail, Little Green Lake
As the water temps warm up this summer, please remember to handle fish carefully and release them quickly.
You might even consider foregoing a picture during the heat of summer unless it’s a special catch. And if you
do choose to take one, just remember to remove those sunglasses and video cameras before taking the
picture!

Game Fishing Etiquette
1) Obey all fishing and boating regulations in the
jurisdiction in which you are fishing.
2) Maintain a positive attitude at all times within your
vessel and when interacting with other fellow
anglers.
3) Consider staying at least 100 feet(30+yards) or a cast
length away from other anglers when casting lures or
trolling.
4) Consider giving way or moving altogether to prevent
cutting off another anglers fishing drift. Please do not
crowd.
5) Please avoid crossing between the shoreline and
another angler fishing that shoreline.
6) Lead by example. Remember our children are
watching.

Bill WOOD MEMORIAL OUTING Results
The 31st Lake Winter (newly titled Bill Wood Memorial) Outing was held on Saturday June 21st. This was the
first time the rules allowed fishing on any Sawyer County Lake. The weather cooperated with clouds and light
winds in the morning giving way to sunny weather later in the day. Sixteen anglers participated. The Lake
Winter area experienced about a 2-3 week delay in its summer schedule. Weed development was down and
mosquito production was way up. The mosquitoes were voracious and full mosquito net suits and repellant were
in high demand. On Saturday fishing started out hot with a 38 and a 39 in the boat by 8:30. The Crandall/Kopf
team netted a 38” near the grassy island on a homemade “Swisher Junior” topwater bait. Duffy also caught a 21”
walleye off the grassy island. Five minutes later the Hoffman/Reinstra team boated a 39” on a jackpot style bait
called a Viper on the west side of Lake Winter. The Kauffman/Hellenbrand team decided to try Lake of the
Pines and had a stellar day. They boated 3 fish including a 41 ½ ” fish on a topwater bait made by a longtime
ago member, Grant Manhart. His company was called Tacklemaster made the Surftailed Badger topwater lures.
The dinner and awards ceremony was held again this year at the Julie’s Trailside Inn. Steve Reinstra handled
the Master of Ceremonies duties. Participants shared several amusing stories. Somehow the muskie nut took
first place honors. It took him the better part of 31 years, but he finally met his goal. He won the following; 1)
bragging rights for a year 2) a gorgeous handmade crankbait made by John Eversoll 3) a beautiful Abu-Garcia
Volatile 8’ muskie rod. Steve Reinstra took second place and won a gift certificate. John Eversoll won the
smallest muskie caught category (28”) earning him a gift certificate as well. No cash prizes were awarded.
Muskie troubadour Geoff Crandall performed several songs. A good time was had by all! The next Bill Wood
Memorial Outing will be held on June 20, 2015. If anyone has any ideas to make this a better outing please
contact Geoff Crandall at [email protected] or Sue/John Eversoll at [email protected].

Wisconsin Youth Muskie Championship Results
Ruiz is Youth Muskie Champion for 2014
Abe Ruiz’s second-ever muskie was a big one…at 45.5” his was the biggest of the day during the 2nd
annual Wisconsin Youth Muskie Championship on Lake Waubesa. Coming in the last hour of the
tournament, the fish hit about 15 yards away from the boat and put up a strong battle for the 13-yearold angler from Madison. The muskie was caught while fishing with “Big Brother” Todd Berge who
assisted with the netting and release (photo page 1).
The annual youth championship is open to anyone 18-years-old and younger. And although they may
be accompanied by a non-fishing parent or other adult in the boat, the muskie fishing is all up to them.
Hosted by Capital City Chapter of Muskies Inc. with support from the Madison Fishing Expo, the
free event focuses on fun through fishing, giveaways, a meal, and awards for top finishers.
The 19 youth participants fished from 7am until 2pm, registering 5 muskies. The 2nd place winner
measured 44.5” for Jordan Laridaen, and the 3rd place winner was Darrick Hill with a 37” hybrid,
his first muskie ever. Also scoring muskies on the day were Kimberly Franklin’s 35.5” (her first
ever) and Zach Scheuers’ 28”er. All fish were caught on small bucktails in shallow water and the
action was steady throughout the day. Most participants reported muskies spotted, plus some nice
bonus pike caught.
The day wrapped up with a free meal for all participants, after which awards and raffles were handed
out. Trophy plaques were earned by the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers and all youth attendees received
a free lure. The grand prize winner was drawn by raffle, with Josh Thomas winning a custom-built St.
Croix from B&B Custom Rods paired with a Shimano 300EJ reel.
