Head Diving Coach
Now in her fourth season as head
coach of the Nazareth men’s and
women’s swim teams, Martie Staser
has helped lend stability to both
programs.
No stranger to Nazareth College, Dave
Marsh has been the Golden Flyers’ diving
coach since 2001.
Marsh was a standout diver for the
Golden Flyers from 1994-1996 and
qualified for the NCAA Division III
championships in Oxford, Ohio in 1996.
He also was selected team MVP in ‘96
and still holds scoring records for 1-meter
diving (274.20 for six dives and 425.65
for 11 dives).
Staser has a record number of
swimmers on the women’s roster
and has experienced unprecedented
success along the way.
The women’s team has lost just one dual meet in three seasons
for Staser, who is 30-1 overall and 20-0 over the last two
seasons. Nazareth also has finished second in the Empire
8 Conference championship meet in each of the past three
seasons while winning 25 conference titles. She was named E8
Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007.
The crowning achievement of her brief yet successful tenure
was helping guide Emily Lesher to an NCAA title in the 400-yard
IM last year. Lesher is a six-time All-American under the
assistance of Staser, who also helped Aubrey Kirchoff gain AllAmerican honors in the 200 butterfly in 2006.
Staser, a former swimming standout at the University at Buffalo,
was named head men’s and women’s swimming and diving
coach at Nazareth in September, 2004. She replaced Rick
Aronberg, who coached the Golden Flyers for 11 seasons.
Staser grew up in New Hampshire, then swam scholastically
at Germantown Academy near Philadelphia. She earned
undergraduate and graduate degrees from UB, where she
was a four-year letterwinner in swimming and a Mid-Continent
Conference champion in four events. She served as team
captain in 1995-96 and 1996-97 and was a first-team allconference selection all four seasons there.
At UB, Staser won conference titles in the 1650 free, 500 free,
200 fly, and 400 IM. Other accolades included selection as
Academic All-Conference in 1994, 1996, and 1997.
Before coming to Nazareth, Staser served as academic advisor
for intercollegiate athletics at Southern Illinois University in
Edwardsville, Ill. She also was coordinator of the university’s
Life Skills Program and advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory
Committee.
Staser also has coaching experience at the Edwardsville YMCA,
Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Hazelwood Elite
Aquatic Team in Missouri, and the Nickel City Splash Swim Club
in Buffalo.
In addition to coaching swimming and serving as aquatics
director, Staser coordinates Nazareth’s Life Skills Program.

As a coach, Marsh has enjoyed similar success. As a club coach,
he has helped train several athletes who have attended the Senior
and Junior National competitions. He also has coached many of
the local high school teams in the Rochester area and has helped
seven divers reach the state high school finals.
ASSistant COACH
Jack Hauber
Back for his sixth season as an assistant
coach with the Nazareth swimming and
diving program, Jack Hauber has been
a fixture at Nazareth for more than a
decade.
A 1996 Nazareth graduate, Hauber ranks
among the program's all-time fastest
swimmers in five events, including the
100- and 200-yard backstrokes. He was
a four-time conference finalist in the 100
backstroke as well as the 100 butterfly.
Hauber’s coaching experience includes five years as head coach
for the QUIK swim club and five seasons as an assistant coach at
Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. He is a teacher at Midlakes High
School in Phelps, N.Y.

top | The Nazareth swimming facility has been home to the Golden Flyers’ men’s and women’s teams since 1977.
The Nazareth College swimming and diving
program has continued to progress since
Martie Staser took over as head coach of
the men’s and women’s teams in 2004-05.
The women’s team has enjoyed unparalleled
success, finishing with a 11-0 record and
a second-place finish at the Empire 8
Conference meet in 2006-07.
The men’s team, looking for an increase in
roster numbers, finished 2-9 and placed fifth
in the Empire 8 Conference meet in 2006-07.
Here’s a look at each event for 2007-08:
WOMEN’S SPRINT FREESTYLE
Meghan Okoniewski, now a senior, has
dominated this area for the last three
seasons, which included a conference title
in the 50 freestyle in 2006. She has also
been part of a couple of relay records. Junior
Brittany Beane also specializes in the shorter
freestyle races as do sophomores Amanda
Paswaters and Kaitlin Shearman.
WOME N ’S D I S T A N CE F RE E S T Y L E
Amy Mehltretter dominated this area for four
years before graduating last spring. Now
the Golden Flyers will look to an experienced
group that includes senior Elaina Burns,
junior captain Martha Mortensen,
sophomores Lauren Danis and Courtney
Pilc, and freshman Emily Alexander.
WOMEN’S BACKSTROKE
National champion Emily Lesher (400 IM),
now a senior, has a 51-0 dual-meet record
in three seasons and should continue to
dominate. Senior Jen Dahm and sophomore
Kaitlin Shearman also show promise in
addition to sophomore Heather Tomaski
and freshman Kristen Pedrotti.
W O ME N’S B REA S TS TROKE
The Golden Flyers boast quality depth here
with the return of seniors Caitlin Howlett and
Kate Kukan along with sophomore Jeanne
Falco. Kukan was second in the Empire 8 at
both the 100- and 200-yard distances while
Howlett and Falco were conference finalists
in both events. Newcomer Brittany Morgan
also moves into the mix.
W O ME N’S B UTTERF L Y
Sophomore Lauren McKinney was the
conference champion in the 200 butterfly
in ‘07 and should lead the way at both
distances again. Emily Alexander, a high
school standout at Valley Central, adds
strength. Others returning are senior Sarah
DuFour, junior Jen Sabonis and sophomores
Lauren Danis and Stephanie Carroll.
W O M E N’S D IVIN G
Optimism runs high here as conference
finalists Becca Kraft, a sophomore, and
Hilary Ship, a junior, each return. Junior
Kelsey Ward also looks to help.
Senior captain Sean O’Malley and freshman
Paul Thompson will also compete here.
MEN ’S D IS TA N C E F REESTYLE
Karl Kolkmann returns for his senior season
and should be among the team’s top
performers. Wortel and Thompson should
also help here along with junior Don Curran.
MEN ’S B A C KS TROKE
The Golden Flyers lack depth here and
will count on senior captain Jon Campbell
to be a factor here as others on the
roster develop.
MEN ’S B REA S TS TROKE
One of the Golden Flyers’ most solid events,
led by senior Jon Campbell and junior Mike
Fritz primed to improve at both the 100- and
200-yard distances. Freshman Jeff Dick and
junior Mark Hutchinson should also help out
here.
MEN ’S B UTTERF L Y
Sophomore Eric Lenhardt seeks continued
improvement here as he looks to be a factor
at the Empire 8 Conference championships.
Sean O’Malley could also contribute here.
MEN ’S D IVIN G
Sophomore Matt Brown returns and looks to
improve upon a strong first season.
M E N ’ S S PRIN T F REES TY L E
Sophomore Rob Wortel returns after a
strong first season and will focus on the
100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles.

training trip | The semester break provides one of the highlights of the season for
the Nazareth swimming and diving teams. Last year’s team traveled to Hawaii and
trained at the University of Hawaii. The team practiced twice a day to help jump start
the season that reaches a competitive stage upon their return in January. Coach Staser
also sees the trip as a great team bonding experience from which lasting friendships
develop. During the 2005-06 trip to Waikiki, the team visited the Dole Pineapple
Plantation, Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. They also examined grains of
sand on several beaches, hiked up Diamond Back Mountain, snorkeled in the Pacific
Ocean and swam against Division I University of Iowa in an exhibition meet.

Campus Expansion : Nazareth’s 2004 campus expansion included 2,200-seat Golden Flyer Stadium, an all-weather track and a softball diamond.
Nazareth College is a
private, co-educational
college with a liberal arts
and sciences tradition.
the 2,200-seat Golden Flyer Stadium,
the spacious Elizabeth George and
Portka residence halls and a softball
diamond.
Founded in 1924 by the
Sisters of St. Joseph,
Nazareth has been
independent for more than
30 years.
Students now have twice as
many classrooms and computer
labs; more undergraduate and
graduate programs; opportunities to
compete on intercollegiate teams in
equestrian, cross country, track and
field, men’s volleyball, and women’s
softball; and a choice of living options
that includes suites, cafes and free
laundry service.
Nazareth’s athletic mission
and philosophy
The Nazareth College Athletic
Department will strive to empower its
student-athletes to grow as people
and make a positive impact on
society, with life-skills development,
mentoring, and leadership
opportunities through competitive
and cooperative experiences.
The Athletic Department is committed
to assisting in the college’s mission
of educating students with a goal
of fostering lifelong commitment to
intellectual, ethical and aesthetic
values. The Athletic Department
will operate under firm institutional
control of the college and will always
place the health and welfare of
the student-athletes, coaches and
staff first in decisions regarding the
athletics program.
The department will operate under
the NCAA Division III philosophy,
through which academics are
the student’s first priority and
sportsmanship, fair play, diversity and
ethical conduct are constantly taught
and promoted.
Campus expansion
2004 marked the completion of
Nazareth’s largest capital campaign
in history. The college raised $25
million to support the recent campus
expansion through the purchase
of 73 acres of adjoining land and
buildings. Today’s campus features
148 acres and includes the five-story
