STIFF NEW TEXAS
DRUNK DRIVING LAW
AUSTIN - As of midnight, January 1,
1984,Texas had a new and stiffer drunk
driving law. Some feel the gay community may be an easy target for officers
wishing to harass drivers leaving gay
bars, it was expressed to TWTNEWS.
Under the new law, if an alleged drunk
driver refuses to take a sobriety test, the
suspect's license to drive willbe suspended for 90 days.
Also under the new law, drunk drivers
living in a county of more than 25,000
population will face having their postarrest actions and conditions recorded
on videotape, to be played back later to
act as a powerfu Ideterrent to keep them
from fighting the OWl charges, and to
help convict them in court.
The new law also calls for tougher
punishment. First offense: $100-$2,000
fine and 72 hours-2 years in jail. Second
offense: $300-$2,000fine and 15 days-2
years in jail. Third and subsequent offenses: $500-$2,000 fine and 30 days-2
years in jail, or60 days-5years in prison.
A drunk driver causing serious bodily injury will face a minimum jail sentence of 60 days longer and a $500 higher fine. Drunk drivers causing a traffic
fatality will face a mandatory 120-dayjail
term, no questions asked, no way out for
an alternative.
Drunk drivers convicted of a fourth
OWl can be ordered by the court to sell
their car and to never drive aqain.
How much alcohol is considered "too
much" in Texas? It's been lowered toonIy 0.10%, TWTNEWShas been advised.
Translated into drinks, 0.10% means
that most men would need to consume
five or six drinks, women three or four,
depending upon body weight. The key
is that one drink equals 1.5 ounces of
hard liquor, five ounces of wine or two
bottles of beer.

AHRC LAUNCHES
ANNUAL DRIVE
SAN ANTONIO - This city's Alamo
Human Rights Committee has launched its first annual membership drive. The
deadline to obtain a 1984 membership
is this coming January 30_Memberships
taken now will be good until January 30,
1985_
Annual enrollment is only $10.00.
Checks should be sent to AHRC, 150
Terrell Plaza, #186, San Antonio, TX
78209.Include name, address, city, state
and ZI P code.
AHRC is involved in not only endorsing pro-gay, pro-human rights candidates in elections, but also in registering voters. To date, AHRC has an untarnished record of endorsing winning
candidates. "Quite an accomplishment,
for its first year," it has been pointed out
to TWTNEws/SanAntonio.
DALLAS GAY PRIDE
KICKS OFF EARLY
DALLAS - A kick-off party and organizational meeting forthis city's Gay
Pride Week '84 will be held on Sunday,
January 15 at the Sundance Lounge,
4025 Maple Avenue. "Input from all gay
clubs and businesses is needed so that
planning for this summer's Gay Pride
Week can be the result ofthe entire community," president of the Dallas Tavern
Guild, Gary Monier, stated.
Preliminary plans have involved the
combined efforts of the Tavern Guild,
the Dallas Gay Alliance and the Oak
Lawn Symphonic Band.
"We realize many will not be able to
become active in the full planning, but
we would like for you to show your support for this important event by attending as president, owner or interested
representative," Alan Ross of DGA told
TWTNEws/Dalias.
PAGE 9
Reply forms have already been mailed to Dallas-area clubs and businesses,
and "should be returned by January 12
so that we can plan this important meeting and kick-off party," Judith Jones,
president of the Oak Lawn Symphonic
Band, urqed,
"It is important that we all work together to assure the Dallas gay community of a week we can all be proud of
in 1984," it was jointly explained.
Such a spirited announcement was
prompted after the entanglements between community factions during the
1983Gay Pride Week events, parade and
festivities. The commonality of gay pride
is the collective's centerpiece.
LESS THAN 4% USA
AIDS CASES IN TEXAS
ATLANTA - According to end-ofthe-year statistics released by the Center for Disease Control in this city, 104
people havesuffered from AIDS in Texas
since the first cases were reported in
1979.Fortunately, the cases in Texas account for less than 4% of the 3,064
cases reported nationwide.
New York State leads the nation with
1,373 cases, California is second with
686, followed by Florida with 213, then
New Jersey with 191, and Texas is in
fifth place with 104 cases, the CDC
reported to Newsday.
Health officials in Texas, however,
estimate that the number of cases in
Texas is probably much higher, as many
doctors have respected the patient's
"right to privacy," and thus have been
reluctant to report all AIDS cases because of suspected harassment from
employers.
When it becomes known to some employers that one of their employees is
being treated for AIDS, they face dismissal, it has been reported.
As of December 31,1983,1,292 deaths
had been reported across the nation.
Thus, AIDS has been fatal to about onethird of its victims.
Charles Fallis, a spokesperson for
CDC, said that his agency has been
PAGE 10
TWT JANUARY 6 - 12, 1984
keeping statistics on the disease since
the summer of 1981, "but we were able
to find a few cases dating back to 1979."
Mark Chataway, of the Gay Men's
Health Crisis in New York City, described the numbers as "gruesome," adding,
"We knew that the numbers were increasing, despite the fact that media attention has declined."
In Texas, Houston has accounted for
almost half of the cases statewide, with
Dallas-Fort Worth accounting for about
one-quarter. The Austin-San Antonio
area ranks third in the state in AIDSrelated cases, TWTNEWSlearned.
Meanwhile, researchers continue to
probe the mystery disease looking for
a cause. A report, published in the current, January 6, 1984edition of Science
magazine, suggests that an unidentified
virus causes AIDS-like disease in
monkeys.
The report stated the primate experiments were expected to hel p scientists
gain a better understanding of human
AIDS.
DALLAS GAY GOP
SETS ELECTIONS
DALLAS - Nominations for officers
of the Dallas Gay Republican Club, the
Grand Old Party (GaP), were held last
Wednesday, January 4, with elections
taking place Wednesday, January 18.
At its second meeting, the club set an
agenda for 1984 which will include the
establishment of a screening committee for Republican candidates, a voter
registration drive, a hospitality suite for
Republican delegates to the national
convention, and a major fundraising
drive.
The group was also to vote on a name
for the club. Suggestions were to be
submitted prior to the January 4 meeting.
Acting chairperson Stan Aten told
TWTNEwsIDalias that the club had to
come forward and be part of the new organization. "There are many positions
available and those who must be discreet about being visible for job-related

This month's meetings are being held
at 4211 Bowser, Apt. 115,at 7:00pm. Further information may be obtained by

The Trinity Gay Support Group came
about by happenstance, after a student,
Steve Teepe, had written a letter to the
editor of the campus newspaper, The
Trinitarian,
in which he praised the
university'S showing of the movie, Pink
BAYTOWN GAYS TO
FORM NEW GROUP
In Teepe's letter, he revealed his sexual preference, and solicited other gays
to contact him. The timing was evidently right, as in short time, several other
campus gays had made contact, and
thereby formed the nucleus of the new
gay campus group, it was explained to
TWT NEwslSanAntonio.
BAYTOWN, Texas - A new gay
social support group is to form in this
southeast Texas city this January. The
organization is to be called the Baytown
Lambda Group, and it will be open to all
gays in the Baytown vicinity.
Its purpose will be to provide. a setting for social gatherings and opportunities to meet people and establish
relationships, The first meeting will be
at 7:30pm on Friday, January 20.
For further information regarding the
organization and the location of the
meeting, persons were asked to contact
the group at (409) 427-1378,
TRINITY GAYS
FORM NEW GROUP
SAN ANTONIO - Over 30 students
from Trinity University attended the first
meeting in Decemberof a newly-organized gay campus group. A long-time advocate of gay rights, Professor 0.2.
White has accepted the position offered
as faculty moderator.
Partly because of White's guidance,
the collective, known as Trinity Gay Support Group, encountered no roadblocks
in becoming officially sanctioned by the
university, as have similar groups at
SMU and Texas A&M.
The major input from Trinity University was that, in orderto become recognized and officially operable, the group
could not discriminate against nongays. In other words, if heterosexuals
wished to join, they could.
This ace in the hole is a blessing in
disguise, and will likely allow many
closeted gays to join the group, since
being a member will not automatically
label one as being gay.

GOAL FOR 1984
SAN ANTON 10 - At the close of the
old year, the San Antonio Gay Alliance
posted a net loss for the fiscal year 1983
of $1,333.81. However, according to a
budget report made available to TWT
NEwslSanAntonio, SAGA has projected
an income of $4,608 for 1984.
Among the SAGA projects of 1983
were Gay Pride Week, the AIDS Project,
a gay census, the annual gay community awards in February, three plays in
March through the West Street Repertory Theatre of New York, Gay Fiesta at
LaVillita last August, the Circles Theatre
production of One, and a Quentin Crisp
reception in November.
Among the most notable endeavors
by SAGA in 1983 was the promotion of
the formation of the Alamo Human
Rights Committee, a political action arm
of the gay community, which successfully endorsed candidates during its first
year.
Looking ahead into 1984, one of the
first efforts of the new year will be to
formulate plans for a retreat in the Hill
Country, near Boerne, Texas, the weekend of January 21-22 at the Guadalupe
River Ranch. Registration was scheduled to begin at 11:OOamon Saturday,
January 21.
The business of running SAGA and its
many programs is naturally a costly one,

DALLAS/HOUSTON TO
HOST HRCF IN '84
WASHINGTON, DC - The Human
Rights Campaign Fund, the national progay civil rights political action committee, wound up its 1983 fundraising with
a series of events in Key West, Florida,
during the last week of December. It
marked the end of the fourth year of
operations for HRCF.
HRCF signs are set toward a minimum $1 million warchest for the 1984
elections. During the 1981-'82 election
cycle, over $609,000was raised; spokesperson Bill Damon advised TWTNEWS.
Activities in 1983were highlighted by
the annual New York City dinner at the
Waldorf Hotel. The Rev. Jesse Jackson
was the keynote speaker at the September event, and the evening netted HRCF
over $30,000.
Vic Basile, executive director of
HRCF, in announcing the minimum $1
million goal for 1984, also announced
the appointments of Sheila Kuehl and
Jack Newby as the new co-chairs forthe
Los Angeles City Committee. The drive
to reach the goal will begin in LA with
a $1,000 per plate dinner on January 17.
A San Francisco reception and dinner
party are to follow four days later. Majorevents are also planned forTexas, in
Houston and Dallas, during the early
part of the new year.
Basi Ie set the tone for the 1984effort
when he remarked, "The gay and lesbian
community has a tremendous wealth of
talent, diversity and commitment. We
want to bring those qualities together
to forge an even more potent political
force in 1984."
TRANSSEXUAL SHOOTS
AT HOUSTON POLICE
L..---.._ ..•.,
HOUSTON - Mr. Gelabert, who had
recently undergone asex-change operation to become Anna Gelabert, was involved in a New Year's weekend shoot-

t
ing spree with Houston police officers,
after evidently contemplating suicide.
The 45-year-old woman fired at police
from her west Houston home in the affluent Ashford Forest subdivision, after
telling police to "leave her alone or kill
her."
Gelabert had returned forthe holidays
from California, where she now resides,
to visit her three teenage children, whom
she had "fathered" when she was a man.
As many as 120 rounds were fired before the 15-minute standoff ended, Mark
Obbie of the Houston Post reported.
Gelabert was wounded by two bullets
to the arm and chest, and taken to Hermann Hospital, after the 6:00pm, December 30 shootout.
An unidentified police officer received a minor leg wound and was taken to
Rosewood Memorial Hospital, officials
said. Gelabert had fired from her front
doorway, and through the windows of
her home. Police had fired no shots.
SAGA TO HOLD
3rd ANNUAL AWARDS
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio
Gay Alliance will hold its third annual
awards banquet on Sunday, February 12
at an as yet undetermined location. "We
will be honoring lesbian and gay achievements and the persons instrumental in
bringing about these achievements in
the San Antonio gay community," Tim
Ramm of TWTNEws/San Antonio was
advised.
The SAGA Awards Committee requested that all awards nominations be
submitted to Award Nominations in care
of SAGA, P.O. Box 12063,San Antonio,
Texas 78212. SAGA advised to include
the nominee's full name and mailing address, plus a brief description of the person's achievements in 1983, or outline
their continuing long-term service to the
gay community.
"It is important that these nominations be mailed before next Thursday,
January 12, so that the awards committee will have adequate time to review all
the nominees," the board stated. ,\II?

----In
Memoryof M.RobertSchwab----
Dear TWT:
Thursday [Dec. 15, 1983] was one of
those days when I couldn't pull myself
together. I tried to concentrate at work,
came home early to write Christmas cards
and couldn't concentrate on that either. I
felt restless, but also felt that something,
somewhere, was draining all of my energy.
I missed the evening news, and it wasn't
until mid-morning the next day that I heard
my friend Robert Schwab had died of
AIDS the evening before. I had spoken
with him a few weeks before on the
phone, but he was too weak to talk very
long ....
I vividly remember the first time I saw
him, back in the Golden Days of the early
70s, coming through the glass doors
between the two bars at the old Dirty
Sally's on Lovett on a Sunday afternoon.
He paused for a moment, his bright
sparkling eyes swept over the throng
taking in the scene. Hmm, I thought-new
face in town-kinda
cute. There was an
aloofness about him-or, more, a little boy
lost look-a terrible kind of vulnerability.
It wasn't long before I met Robert at
one of those endless meetings we were all
going to then as the Gay Rights
Movement was undergoing its birth pangs
here in Houston. We sat on living room
and barroom floors trying to keep some
semblance of order and chart the course
of GPC and this group and that group. We
spent evenings listening to Robert Schwab
going over the by-laws HE had sat up
endless nights writing for our fledgling
organizations. Robert worked constantly
providing needed legal guidance to our
inexperienced organizations. He was still
in law school, living on the wind as only
students do.
•
We grew to know each other as friends.
He was always in the thick of the
movement. He finished law school and
began to build his practice. It was nice
seeing a young friend begin to blossom
and grow into his early practice. He had
TWT JANUARY 6 - 12. 1984
everything to live for.
Some of us who were there in the
beginning of the Movement burned out
and withdrew from our earlier activism.
Robert never did - he stayed in there. As
more and more organizations formed in
our community he was there again,
helping them get organized and
incorporated. But his finest hour was in
the enormous contribution he made both
in preparing the legal briefs and in
fund raising efforts through the Texas
Human Rights Foundation to fight the
court battle in Baker vs. Wade, which
culminated in the invalidation of the hated
21.06 sodomy law. There are few who can
appreciate the enormous amount of
research he had to do and the groundwork
he had to lay before engaging the
awesome legal system of the state in
court. He was tireless in his efforts to
raise funds for the fight. He would be on
the phone. I would get a note asking if I
could contribute or help work on a
fundraiser. He was relentless. But the
battle was won as a result of his efforts
and those of Don Baker in Dallas.
The best tribute we can give to Robert's
memory is to rededicate ourselves to the
battle for human rights. We can begin with
ourselves. In our own community we must
stop the petty gossiping and vicious finger
pointing and behind hands whispering. We
must stop exploiting each other so
ruthlessly. We must stop discriminating
against each other. Although we need
creative and open debate on issues and
ideas we must not use this as an excuse
for blowing up our own egos or crucifying
each other's characters. We must regain
respect and trust for each other. Now,
more than ever, we MUST look after one
another. Those who have never been
involved need to get involved, while those
who have withdrawn need to get back into
the fray. There is lots to be done. There
are people, alone and broke, who are sick
and dying in our midst. Our organizations

41 are struggling to survive both spiritually
and financially. We have been at each
other's throats too long. We seem to be
floundering in a sea of self-doubt and loss
of resolve, brought on by the terrible
plague in our midst and by the virulent
hatred of the New Right which surrounds
us everywhere in society. But we must not
let ourselves be overwhelmed by the
stormy seas in which we find ourselves.
We have enormous resources and
strengths in our own community and many
loving, generous, beautiful people. We
must close our ranks and unify. Only by
giving of ourselves in any way we can even if it's as simple as getting to the
polls on election day or going to the store
for an AIDS victim - will we survive these
dark times.
In the darkest hours of World War II the
famous poetess, Edna St. Vincent Millay,
wrote, "Instead of cursing the dark, light a
candle against the night." The sparks that
will light our candle and fill the gloom
with light will be our own loving and
caring for each other whenever and
however we can. In this way we can honor
the memory and not betray the legacy of
our beloved friend Robert, who did so very
very much for all of us.

DearTWT:
I have just finished reading your Dec.
9-15 issue [Vol. 3, No. 38). I appreciate the
fact that gay publications (that are not sex
magazines) exist. I am new to the gay life
(being 18), and I will continue to read your
publication as long as it exists. Please
keep up the good work!
By the way, I think Joan Rivers is a
beautiful woman and can't understand her
insistence that she is ugly or has a bad
figure. She's a knockout! The men on the
cover were gorgeous, too!

Sappho Was a Right-On Woman, by Sidney
Abbott and Barbara Love; 251 pp.; non-fiction; bibliography, notes; Stein and Day,
Scarborough House, Briarcliff Manor, New
York 10510; paperback $2.50.
There has been a multitude in the last
several years of books about the gay
male experience and coming out as a
process. Studies, both psychological
and sociological, have been written by
male, gay and non-gay, psychologists,
psychiatrists and doctors. Most of them
add an apologia to the effect that they
cannot speak for women, that they cannot cover gay women in the study.
Of course they could have tried, but
TWT JANUARY 6 - 12. 1984
lesbians need to speak out for themselves as Sidney Abbott and Barbara
Love do in Sappho Was a Right-On
Woman. In their work subtitled "A
Liberated View of Lesbianism," Abbott
and Love run the gamut of women's and
lesbians' issues. Emotional deprivation,
guilt, shame, poverty, despair and isolation have often been the rule for women
who love women but feel imprisoned by
society's and family's expectations.
Since Abbott and Love wrote this in
1972there has been some improvement.
The bars for women they describe as
sanctuary were seedy, mafia-run, often
reinforced society's view of lesbians as

ersatz males, locking them into butchfemme roles even in there. Progress has
been made-true, there are better, welllit bars for a variety of women to meet
other women. But the issues remain.
Their work is a most enduring and
wide-ranging effort to encompass all the
dimensions of conflict a lesbian has
within herself and with society's attempts to control her. As some men
threaten other men by calling them
"sissy" or worse, "faggot" or "woman,"
society controls women by calling them
"dyke" or "Iizzy." But if gay men feel oppressed, gay women face second-class
citizenship to begin with, and then must
deal with the threats because they are
gay.
I
The book is divided into two general
. categories, a description of lesbians'
current situation in society, and what
can be different, and better, in the second section. The first section of the first
half deals with the most important internal component emotions, guilt and
shame. The authors describe its insidious, paralyzing effect that goads
women to deny their feelings, to try to
compensate for their feelings, or ultimately blot out the feelings completely
in an act of self-destruction.
Society attempts to control lesbians
by withholding the rewards of family approval, children, marriage and "freedom" from work outside the home. It ac-
tually rewards lesbians for keeping
within the stereotype. The attacks on the
National Organization of Women were
accusations of takeover by lesbians; this
word was used to invoke fear and control over the "upstarts."
The first chapter of the second section discusses the issues of lesbianism
as they relate to NOW. It includes an account of the events in the organization
from 1968to 1971 leading to public support of lesbians both in the organization
and outside it. The next Chapter is a
more general discussion of the issues
of lesbianism and feminism.
The next Chapter describes the next
stage, "The Realization of Innocence."
Only when guilt is replaced with pride,
when lesbians realize they have not
"done anything," will they realize an internal revolution toward a more healthy
self-image. The first battleground is,
within oneself, the next is in curing
society at large, the theme of the next
chapter.
Though written in 1972, thls book is
one of the clearest statements of lesbian freedom and self-determination,
free of society's mandates, available to
date. Other voices, Kate Millet, Rita Mae
Brown, can be heard and read; their
works are listed in a bibliography in the
back of the book. Progress has been
made but the issues still remain, and Abbott and Love record them.

NEW YEAR'S EVE 'ROUND TOWN We had dance and C&W performers to

honey, were there ever parties!
At Rich's in Houston, the giant video

back to us. Taka had such a good time,
she stayed over to party with Rich's

the New Year to an extremely festive
country crowd.
At Numbers, ex-Staggering Harlette,
Sharon Redd, decked out in a new
"punk" hairdo, sang her new single
"Love How You Feel," and lots of her old
ones. Amidst the New Year's reverlers
and snow of Numbers, Taka Boom tipped over from Rich's and performed an
after-hours duet with good chum
Sharon. I guess we would' call that a
double-redd-boom. Hey, give me a
break! I didn't coin that phrase. But I
can't tell.
The Brazos River Bottom brought
David Houston to town to play his first
gay club gig for the New Year's Eve
cowboys. I know you've heard it before,
but it's true. David told us he enjoyed
playing our crowd more than any other.
He said he's never encountered a more
appreciative audience. Some of his New
Year's Eve tunes were "Mountain of
Love" and "Almost Persuaded," which
brought the good 01' country sound
home.

TEA BY THE SEA - Corpus ChrisTEA
bv Greg: Tony Cibrian has won the Face
of the Year contest held at the
Bunkhouse, which was also the site of
the end-of-the-year People's Choice
Awards-the results from the ballot boxes
around town for Best Bartender were
Rodney Mendick of Lafitte's, Gloria of the
Leopard Lounge, Paul Sparks of the
Hidden Door, Eddy Sisfuentes of the Jolly
Jack, and Tony Kutach of the Bunkhouse,
who also won the city-wide award for
best bar employee .... Over 50 people
from yesteryear attended the December
reunion of the 01' Whistle Stop Clubmanager Lee Elliff told HOT TEA the gettogether for the city's first gay club was a
rip-roaring success.... And New Year's
Eve across town was wet and wild with
rice, confetti and flying glass pelting
revelers at Lafitte's, cowboys and indians
ringing in the New Year at the
Bunkhouse, and Jerry Ortega being
named the New Year's baby at the
Hidden Door. From HOT TEA by the sea,
Happy 1984!
DALLAS DIRT - Alice Does Dallas:
Look for the Round-Up's postponed
Christmas extravaganza to be rescheduled
this January ....
Speaking of the
holidays, the OP/Frat House Christmas
party was a wild affair, but doorman
Rusty has been advised to keep his pants
on for all future forays .... A similar
warning is issued to OP bartender
Flame's passion to get a "head." ... In
case you haven't been to Pappa Joe's
Tex's Ranch lately, you'll be
overwhelmed with the uncountry
format-yes, Myth Hall has turned the
longtime club into video/dance .... As
the New Year begins, Patrick's remains a
winner, a hit! The food is excellent at the
new Bentley's, says all 800 pounds of
Alice, a girl who certainly knows when
she's got something delicious in her
mouth .... And, HOT TEA
chalks up another success for
kingpin Ray Martin-his new
club, Studio 4, is busily
starting off the new year on
the right food ....
See CRUISE
CAMERA photo below of Studio
4's handsome Dee. 15 grand

UNIFORM TEA - The first Uniform
Contest was held at AI's Place in Houston
on Dee. 17. Unlike most contests, this
one had a strange twist. All the judges
were unknown to the contestants, and
circulated through the crowd during the
evening. The winners were: 1st placeThomas James; 2nd place-Skip
Milhauser; and 3rd place-Jack Sorce.
AI's hopes to make this a monthly event,
after the great response received from the
patrons.
TAYlOR'S TEA - AustinTEAcious: The
capitol city's newest bar, and currently
only full-time country club, called
Austin's Alternative, officially grand
opened on New Year's Eve with music
by dj Tonya (see CRUISE CAMERA photo
above), formerly of Odessa ... Jim Smith
told HOT TEA, "Our thanks to the staffs of
the Boathouse and Crossing for helping
make our employee Christmas party
possible" -seems they bartended so
Sally's employees could go out to party.
... It seems that Debbie and her
Daubettes axed the Dee. 19 show at the
Crossing for an early '84 rescheduling.
... And, #2 Texas was not the only Lone
Star State team to lose in a New Year's
bowl game, as Baylor and SMU were also
shut down. Hell, even #1 Nebraska lost
to Miami. And the Dallas Cowboys are
also out of the Super Bowl running-so
we can all share our misery in
togetherness.
PAGE 46
TEXAS TElETYPE - Word from
Atlanta is that San Antonio's Lisa King,
sponsored by Bonham Ballroom, won the
Miss Gay USA pageant-another Texan
deservedly wins another national title! ...
The next meeting of TGRA will be this
Sunday afternoon at 1pm at Houston's
Kindred Spirits ....
If you're wondering
who won the 1983 Reverse Raffle for
thousands of dollars, Andy Mills of the
Montrose Symphonic Band says you'll
have to wait until February 7-the
postponed drawing date .... The Mr.
Exile contest is slated for next
Wednesday, Jan. 11....
The Officers
Club fittingly has scheduled some Military
Madness maneuvers for those ready for
duty this Friday .... And, one of Texas'
finest artists, blond Randy Ruhlmanwinner of numerous awards-has
unloaded his graphic and design trunks of
talent at his new Houston office in the
TWT building, and is set to design logos,
illustrations, business cards, devastating
ads, et al!
NEW YEAR TEA - In Houston on
January 2, 9:30am marked the start of a
very busy day for our beloved and
reelected Mayor Kathy Whitmire and her
new city council. Attending the
inauguration ceremonies were former
mayors McConn, Hofheinz. Pickett and
Welch, who also acted as masters of
ceremonies.
Although not as well attended as the
inauguration of two years ago, the
Montrose community was very well
represented. In fact, board members of
CHE, the Committee for Public Health
Awareness and the Anthony Hall
Campaign Committee were very visible.
Absent for the day's events were the
officers of GPc.
After the inaugural ceremonies, city
council held its first meeting, where
members of council introduced their
family and friends.
Next, it was on to the private reception
held in the mayor's office for members of
council and other dignitaries.
Then, HOT TEA accompanied the
entourage of illuminaries who were
whisked off to Astro Village Hotel for a
public reception for the mayor. "The
people who are in this room are the real
supporters, and I'm looking forward to
working with all of you in the future, as I
have in the past," Whitmire said.
Councilmembers Goodner, Ellis and
McGowan were also in attendance. Hall
was entertaining a large reception at his
home for his friends and supporters. Hall
said he looked forward to working for
"the whole city" as a councilmember atlarge, and hoped to continue to receive
the input and support he had received to
do his job, "that of representing all the
people, no matter who they are or where
they live their lifestyle."
Councilmember Greanias of the
Montrose district was unable to be at the
mayor's reception, since he was already
at his office setting down to work,
finishing up old projects and starting new
ones for his district.
After the reception at Astro Village, it
was on to another private reception, this
time at a beautiful, private home in
Southwest Houston, near Sharpstown.
Again, Montrose was well represented at
this "must attend" affair.
Everywhere, throughout the day, HOT
TEA observed gay professionals in
abundance in their visibility. In fact, the
entire day proved that gays of wealth,
position and influence seem to be taking
a greater interest in how their city is run.
It looks like the beginning of a new
trend, as more gay citizens become
involved in their government.
SCANDAL OF NEW YEAR - While
the music is playing at the "showbar of
San Antonio," the eat's mouse has been
out with the show director, bartender
and showgirls' cheeses....
And it seems
that the mouse also samples other
cheeses around town. Will the sun never
set on this mouse's smorgasbord?
CLUB TEA - In keeping with tradition,
the Council of Clubs held its annual bar
tour of Houston on Saturday, Dee. 17.
Starting at the Barn, the tour stopped at
over nine bars during the evening. This
year, the council had rented an old
English double-decker bus; however, it
was disabled in an.accident with a
pickup truck on the way to the first pickup point. But the bus company arranged
for a quick substitute. Greg Havican of
HOT TEA caught up with the tour at AI's
Place and attempted to question some of
the participants of the tour as to the
Success of this year's event. Judging from
the lack of sobriety of the 50-plus
members present, it could be termed a
grand success.
RUMOR OF NEW YEAR - It seems
that Terry Flood and Preston Porter are
limping around Texas this January after
some crazed nut hit their vehicle on
Westheimer while they were enroute to
the Midnite Sun's Kids of Kristmas
benefit. The rumor that two of the new
BRB owners had plotted against two of
the old BRB owners cannot be confirmed
by sober sources.
I
METROPLEX TEA - At the Miss Gay
Dallas County pageant held at the OP in
December, Whitney Paige (c) was
crowned the winner. Whitney also won
best evening gown. Runners-up were
Jackie DeShawn (r), who also won best
talent, and Charlene Ross (I), who also
won best male interview. Kristin Rene
won best sportswear, Rachael Masters
and Mahogany tied for best presentations,
and Brandi Roberts won Miss
Congeniality. Meanwhile, at the Mr. Gay
Dallas County pageant, Doug Christoff
took top honors with Ty Boles as
runner-up. CRUISE CAMERA photos by TWT'S
Robert Araya.
ODESSA FILE - At the Miss Nitespot
contest held on November 25, Monique
(I) was crowned the winner. She is shown
in this CRUISE CAMERA photo with former
Miss Gay West Texas, Heather Daniels.
Congratulations from HOT TEA.

'83 TENNIS CHAMPIONS
HOUSTON - The annual Christmas party for this city's tennis league was held in the
home of member Robert Arriaga. Members
and their guests were invited to participate
in the festivities and be on hand for the announcement and presentation of trophies to
last summer's champions.
Each year, the total score of all members
are added together to determine who the
overall champions are. Scores are taken from
regularly scheduled games, as well as tournaments that the members attend throughout
the season. This year's season actually ended with the closing of the annual Hou-Tex
tournament, held in October, Greg Havican
of TWTSPORTS/Houstonreported ..
Master of ceremonies for the event was
president Rich Corder. Members presented
trophies during the evening were Tim Calhoun, Jan Mauldin, Randell Dickerson, Armi
Alabanza and Corder.
Houston members who were winners in the
Hou-Tex tournament were also introduced
and displayed the trophies they had just
received. Tournament director Christi Callic
took the opportunity to thank all members
who participated and congratulated the winners.

l3eing one of Fort Worth's most active and public figures, Jerry Foulkner still
finds time for a stable, if somewhat hectic homelife with his companion/ partner, Scott Fricke. Traveling does toke its toll!
Jerry received his degree in communications from the University of Texas at
Arlington, and has gained his theatrical finesse through puppeteering and touring the East Coast of the U.S. with children's theatre.
Nostalgia is one of Jerry's favorite things, and it plays a big part in his life; a
fact his many friends and fans can attest to.
Jerry's regular occupation as a certified local recording agent has temporarily
been put on hold while he fulfills the engagements and rnokes the appearances
that his many titles require.
You see, in less than five years, Jerry, as the sparl~ling "Tasha Kohl." has scooped
up some of "droqdorn's" most coveted crowns, including Miss Dallas, Miss Southwest America, Miss Heart of Texas, Miss Fort Worth, Miss Gay Texas, Miss MidAmerica, and he is the reigning Miss Gay America as well as TWT'S Entertainer
of the Year 1984 for the State of Texas.
So, the next time you see the gorgeous "Tosho." tell Jerry hello.
