December 2012 Evangel - St. Paul`s Episcopal Church
December 2012 WHAT IS ADVENT? The word Advent means coming. During Advent we remember the first coming of Christ, his birth, at Christmas. We also prepare for His coming again in glory. We look to the future by remembering the past. Advent begins on the Sunday closest to the last day of November and lasts until Christmas Eve. This year the first Sunday of Advent is December 2. Advent has become a very symbolic time in the church and Advent symbols and traditions have evolved through the years. The Advent Wreath is one such symbol. THE ADVENT WREATH You will see Advent wreaths at Church, and many families have chosen to use Advent wreaths at home. The Advent wreath at home can help keep your focus away from the secular chaos of the season and keep you focused on the true meaning of Christmas. The promise of eternal life and the ever unchanging love of God is symbolized by the circular shape of the wreath as well as being symbolized in the use of evergreen branches. 1 Advent wreaths have five candles, one for each of the Sundays before Christmas and a fifth candle for Christmas Day. Candles symbolize light. God sent Christ into the world to give us light in the darkness. Annual Meeting/Service Sunday, Dec. 9 – 9:30 a.m. The color of the candles has its own symbolism. The purple color is for penitence and forgiveness, as we prepare for His coming again. You may see Advent wreaths with all purple candles. Sometimes you will see three purple and one pink candle. The pink or rose color candle is lit on the 3rd Sunday of Advent and originally was derived from the word Gaudette meaning Rejoice as the scriptures this Sunday are more up-lifting than those of the 2 weeks prior. Through the years that meaning has been watered down and now the pink candle is often said to represent Jesus’ mother, Mary. The fifth candle is used in the center of the Advent wreath. This candle is white, representing the purity of Christ, and is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day for the birth of Jesus. December 2012 The Advent Wreath..... The order in which the candles are lit has also taken on symbolism. The first candle, (purple), is often called “the prophecy candle”, or the candle of HOPE. Our scriptures remind us that Jesus coming was prophesied over 2000 years ago. The second candle, (purple), is called “the Bethlehem candle”, also called the candle of LOVE and reminds us that God works in mysterious ways: God loves us so much that He sent his only son to be born a King in a lowly manger in Bethlehem. The third candle, (pink or rose colored), can be called the Mary candle as described above, or can be called “the Shepherds’ candle” and is also called the candle of JOY. It is lighter in color because the shepherds, although initially terrified, ended up rejoicing and praising God for all they had heard and seen. The fourth candle, (purple), is called “the Angel candle”, also called the candle of PEACE. Please read Luke 2: 914. The fifth candle is “the Christ candle” The awaiting is over. The Christ is born, yet we await his coming again. The Christ candle remains lit throughout the Twelve Days of Christmas. help you in this preparation. I encourage you to celebrate the coming of the Christ child for twelve days – not for just one! Almighty God, whose blessed Son at his coming among us brought redemption to his people and peace to all of goodwill: grant that, when he shall come again in great glory to judge the world and to make all things new, we may be found ready to receive him, and enter into his joy; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. *Taddled, with permission, from The Church of the Messiah, Winter Garden, Florida. Polk+ [email protected] LET'S BUILD AN ARK! THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS Christmas Day is really when Christmas begins. There are many fun songs about the Twelve Days of Christmas including a “religious” version. Not to mention that everything Christmas in the retail world is now on sale as if Christmas were over! But the Twelve Days of Christmas are just beginning. The Twelve Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and end on the Twelfth Night. The Twelve Days of Christmas mark the twelve days it took for the Magi to find Jesus. The next season of the Church is Epiphany (always beginning on January 6), which means revelation or manifestation. In simple terms, it is the day on which Jesus was “revealed” to the world.* I encourage you to be mindful of the season of Advent as you prepare for the coming of Christ. I encourage you to use an Advent wreath in your home to 2 By Pidge Cash Goats! Sheep! Llamas.! Water Buffaloes! Heifers! Camels! Chicks! Ducks! Rabbits! Geese! Pigs! Honey Bees! Heifer envisions... As people share their animals' offspring with others - along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe. St. Paul's is building another Heifer International Ark during Advent. Get the whole family involved. We'll be at the Heifer table every Sunday in Advent. Choose your animals to give to a loved one. You will be helping children and families around the world receive training and animal gifts that help them become selfreliant. We'll have cards that you can personalize to tell your friends and family that you have honored them with a Heifer gift. The nominees for Vestry are as follows: Jonathan Bartsch – Art Growden Alicia Hollis – Kirby Jeffreys Charlie McClain – Jennifer McGuire Steve Sachs – Bill Whitesell Our Vestry members whose terms are ending are Jimmie Beasley, Jennifer McGuire, Sally Palmer and Kent Sterling. McGuire is eligible to be nominated again, and was nominated. The Vestry members who will carry on in 2013, with the four to be elected, are Beverly Calder, Don Clayton, Bill Emory, Nancy Loucky, Walter McVetty, Phillip O'Reilly, Wendi Watts and Don Whitfield. Nominee Profiles Jonathan Bartsch Raised in West Virginia, Jonathan moved to middle Tennessee in 1997 and was a member of St. George's Episcopal in Nashville until moving to Murfreesboro in 2003. Jonathan and his wife (DeAnna) joined St. Paul's in 2005 and have two children: Molly (5) and Ben (3), both cradle Episcopalians. The Bartsch family is blessed to have such a wonderful church and church family where they are welcomed and can grow in the love of Christ. Jonathan has been active in the church with the Parents Group, Ushering (8:30AM), and Phase II Planning Committee. Jonathan is proud to call St. Paul's home and feels honored to be considered for this vestry nomination. If elected Jonathan will work faithfully on the church's behalf to continue the work of the Lord at St. Paul's. Outside of church, Jonathan works for Graybar Electric in Nashville and has many hobbies including: hunting, flying, and golf. Art Growden In 2008, as an outsider, I was asked to help design a parish profile for the new rector search. St. Paul's community involvement and outreach programs really impressed me. Then, I was involved in the development of the new St. Paul's logo which allowed me to further become acquainted with this community. I knew that I had found what I'd been looking for in a new church home. Confirmed in 2010, I attended Cursillo 68 and spend Thursday mornings with a reunion group. I'm enjoying my third year in the Education for Ministry (EfM) program. I was part of an attempt to start a Living in Creation ministry here and I'm a member of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship chapter at St. Paul's. My wife, Mary, and I celebrated 29 years of marriage this past July. We have two daughters, Rachel, who is a senior at Watkins College of Art, Design and Film and Sarah, a 4 December 2012 Art Growden..... freshman at MTSU. I've been in business for myself since 1996. If you've seen the Rover buses around town, you've seen one of my more visible local projects. I'd be honored and humbled to be selected to serve. Alicia Hollis My family and I have been members of St. Paul's for over 25 years now following our move to Murfreesboro in 1986. What a privilege and a blessing it has been to be involved in a very loving, active, growing and spiritually dynamic parish! I have participated in many aspects of parish life at different times - Vacation Bible School, youth activities and auction, Christian Education, Cursillo, women's activities, various fundraisers and social grace events. I have served two previous terms on the Vestry, once as Senior Warden, and I have been on our Rector Search Committee twice. Currently, I serve as a Lay Eucharistic Minister and Lector and I am a member of the Communications Committee, Stewardship Committee and the Choir. I am married to Alex, and we have two adult daughters. I appreciate being nominated to serve on the Vestry, and I look forward to all that God has in store for His people at St. Paul's. Kirby Jeffreys Kirby Jeffreys began attending St. Paul's in the fall of 2007 while dating church member Ginger Ambrose. Kirby and Ginger were married at St. Paul's in October of 2008. He was confirmed into the church August of 2010. As a parishioner at St. Paul's, Kirby has served as a volunteer including Vacation Bible School, Wednesday 5 night suppers, summer breakfasts, and security officer at St. Paul's White Elephant Sales. Kirby is also a member of the Flower Guild. Kirby is a volunteer usher for both the Rutherford County Center for the Arts and The Lamplighter Theater. He enjoys playing washtub bass with the musical group "The Burnt Knob Old Time String Band". Professionally, Kirby is a retired Special Operations Agent for Transcor America, working closely with the Federal Marshal's, Homeland Security, Border Patrol and Immigration Custom Enforcement. Kirby enjoys spending time with 2 sons, daughter, and 4 grand-daughters. He would be honored to serve his church and parish family as a member of the vestry. Charlie McClain Charlie McClain and his wife Janna were confirmed at St. Paul's in June of 2009. Their son Samson was born in February of 2010, and they are expecting a daughter in December. At St. Paul's, Charlie is actively involved with the young adults' ministry (YAMs), and often volunteers with the youth December 2012 Charlie McClain..... group. After making his Cursillo #67, Charlie has been active in Tennessee Episcopal Cursillo as a team member and also a commissioner. He is also currently enrolled in the EfM (Education for Ministry) program. Charlie is a stay-at-home dad, spending his days with his son Samson and dreaming about his new daughter Vera. The vestry represents an exciting opportunity to learn and serve Christ in His church. Jennifer McGuire I became a member of the St. Paul's family in 2003 along with my husband Gary. We just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary! We have 3 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 grandchildren, and 2 dogs. This year I was appointed as the Faith Community Nurse (or Parish nurse) for our family here at St. Paul's. You will be learning more about this volunteer mission in the upcoming months, but the "...principles of holistic health arose from the understanding that human beings strive for wholeness in relationship to their God, themselves, their families, and the society in which they live." (Faith Community Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, ANA 2005) I filled the final one-year vestry term of Jo Wintker this year so I have a working relationship and understanding of our current vestry. I have been an active choir member since 2003. I love attending the women's retreats on the mountain each year and the ladies night out each month. I participate in the Wednesday morning bible study led by Jerry Redditt. For the past few years I have assisted in the planning and hosting of the Quarterly 70+ Birthday Luncheon for our seniors, and I volunteer in other areas when the need arises. I am currently the bookkeeper for a couple of 6 businesses of my entrepreneurial husband and in February we opened O'Possum's (an Irish pub/restaurant/micro-craft-brewery) in Murfreesboro. I am also a retired Family Nurse Practitioner/Registered Nurse. Steve Sachs Brenda and I joined St Paul's 12 years ago after moving fron Atlanta. We go to the 7:30 service and I am an usher. We went to St. Bede’s in Atlanta for 30 years and I served on the Vestry as Treasurer and Junior Warden. After graduation with a degree in Math and Physics, I joined the Army and served 6 years active duty. We were based in Germany, Viet Nam and Teheran, Iran. I was in the Army Reserve for 14 years. I got my MBA in Economics at UT. I flew for Delta Airlines for 30 years and retired in 2003. I now work on antique aircraft restorations and repairs. I was raised in the Episcopal Church. We have been married 48 years and have two daughters and three granddaughters. Bill Whitesell After growing up in the Presbyterian Church and seeking to renew my relationship with God, I came to St. Paul's in the early 80's. I was confirmed in December of 1982 and served on the Vestry in the mid 80's. December 2012 Bill Whitesell..... After a hiatus of several years, I returned to St. Paul's because I knew I would find a loving and accepting Christian community. I went to Cursillo in 2011 and am presently experiencing the EFM journey. I attend the 8:30 service and the Wednesday 7:00 A.M. service. In order to fulfill the mission of St. Paul's "to worship God and to bring all into a loving relationship with Jesus Christ "we must continue to insure that the infrastructure of the church compliments that spiritual goal. We have seen that our "Church" can accomplish great things such as the blessing of a new organ this year. I have worked as a career prosecutor since 1980 and have been the District Attorney General for Rutherford and Cannon Counties since 1995. During that time I have been participated in numerous collaborations with various State and local organizations. I presently serve on the Board of the Rutherford County Child Advocacy Center. I bring no special talents other than a commitment to be faithful to the trust given to me in the event I am privileged enough to be elected to serve on your Vestry. St. Paul’s Angel Program teachers with 2 copies of the pictures to give to the parents and use in the classroom. Copies of your Angels photos will be available in the Narthex as a thank you and a reminder of the Angel you selected. Kent Sterling and Tami Waggoner baked cookies for the teachers and their assistants again this year. Gift Cards to the Learning Circle were given to the teachers to use in the classroom. The teachers also received all the items you donated for their classrooms that were on the supply angels. St. Paul’s has been able to reach and touch so many lives in this ministry. What blessings! Thank you all for being a part of this. Save the Date Epiphany Party – Sun., Jan. 6 Details to come! By Charlotte Molloy Thank you all for your support, donations, participation and most importantly your prayers. St. Paul’s delivered 106 Angels Christmas gifts this year. We served Christmas cupcakes to six inner city preschool classrooms and provided them each with a Christmas party. At the party Colin and Polk presented the Christmas Story of Jesus’ birth. The children talked with Santa and Mrs. Claus and were given goody bags, candy canes and wonderful memories. The parents were presented the gifts. This was a great help to the families to make their Christmas a little brighter. It showed them that they are cared about and loved. Rick and Lisa Walsh helped by taking photos of the children with Santa and Mrs. Claus. They presented the 7 Poinsettia Dedications By Sudi Luboniecki Envelopes for dedicating Christmas Poinsettias are now available on the Flower Guild bulletin board in the Parish Hall and on the Visitors table in the Narthex. Envelopes must be turned in by Sunday, December 16. Dedications will be printed in the Christmas Eve service bulletin. The suggested donation for a poinsettia is $18. Completed envelopes should be placed in the Flower Guild mail slot in the Parish Hall or in the designated box on the Visitors Table in the Narthex, not in the offering plate. December 2012 On Saturday morning, we watched the movie Inception. This movie, a movie about dreams, was an excellent catalyst to talk about reality and why knowing what’s true is important. “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8) The Creation Retreat: Learning to Tell a Story About God and The Journey By Steven LeFebvre Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries [email protected] Over the weekend of All Saints (Nov 2-4), St. Paul’s Youth had our second annual Fall Sabbath Retreat. This year we called it The Creation Retreat: Discovering and embodying who we were created to be. We began our discussion with magazines and card stock posters. Our aim was to answer the question, ‘Who does culture say we are,’ by making collages. After poring over the beauty, teen and music magazines, we had a pretty clear sense of what culture expects us to be: sexy, rich, and happy. When we held our collages up with the creation story in Genesis 1, we found that our culture’s message starkly contradicts God’s message that we were created in the image of God and we were created good. 8 On Saturday evening, we watched the sunset over the infamous Sewanee bluff by the big white cross. After dinner, inspired by the beauty we saw, we painted. As we painted, we dialogued about how art has the capacity to communicate, what words often times cannot. The overall narrative of this weekend was what the early mystics called ‘The Desert Experience.’ When we discover the truth about God, the world, and ourselves, it creates disillusionment. In other words, the closer we get to God, the more we find that everything we believe and understand can get put into question. Sometimes discovering the truth about the world forces us to reconsider our goals, our values, and even our relationships. The Desert Experience is that journey we take in the midst of our disillusionment, where we trust God to heal us and restore us. December 2012 The Creation Retreat..... Chamber Singers Here This is the good kind of suffering. The kind of suffering that builds character, inspires creativity, and most importantly gives us a story to tell others. The stories we tell about our journey is the story that leads people, like signposts pointing others, to be faithful in their own journey. In the end, the retreat was a huge success and I feel that everyone walked away with something. Whether it was discovering a new love for painting or simply having time and space to rest from the daily pressures of being a teenager, God certainly blessed us. We have wonderful teenagers at this church and if you get a chance, ask them about the retreat. Shalom Recent Baptisms The following were baptized at St. Paul’s on Nov. 4, 2012. Tuesday, December 4, 7:30 p.m. Nashville Chamber Singers Angela Tipps, Musical Director This year they'll be joined by two special guests: Dr. Greg Bunn, organist at Brentwood United Methodist Church, will accompany the Singers as they perform a commissioned work which they premiered this summer at the national convention of the American Guild of Organists. Christmas Pageant Sunday, Dec. 16 Make plans now to be at the 8:30 a.m. service on Sunday, December 16 as our children present their annual Christmas pageant. The children and their pageant leaders are working hard on this wonderful project. See you on the 16th! NOTES FROM ANGELA: Music for Advent and Christmas I have been looking forward to our first Advent and Christmas with the new organ. Having a much more versatile instrument allows us to offer some incredible music as we prepare for the coming of the Messiah. Each Sunday in December, for the 10 December 2012 Notes from Angela..... 8:30 and 11:00 services, you will hear a vocal solo and an instrumental prelude from our parish musicians as well as students from the MTSU School of Music. And at 11:00, of course, our St. Paul’s choir will sing some of our favorite anthems for Advent. Our annual Service of Lessons and Carols is Sunday, December 23rd, at 4:00 pm. Our St. Paul’s Choir and Choristers will be joined by a brass quintet to celebrate the birth of our Savior in scripture reading, choir, and congregational singing. Patterned after the Christmas Eve service at King’s College, Cambridge, England, since 1918, we “cheat” and do ours a day early, on the afternoon of Advent IV. This is an excellent service to share with your intown friends and out-of-town guests, and there is always a lovely reception following in the Parish Hall. Christmas Eve at St. Paul’s is a magical night. There will be a string quartet at both services, with lots of carol singing. And at 10:30 pm, the St. Paul’s Choir will give a pre-service concert with anthems and more carol singing! This year’s Christmas Eve will be a poignant one for me, though. I expect to shed some tears as we sing “Silent Night” without our dear Ed McClung. If only he could have lived a little longer to see our new organ installed. But if we listen carefully, we might be able to hear that great heavenly choir, accompanied by some harmonica…? Birthdays! Use them throughout the year and bring them back, filled again with groceries, on February 3, 2013, our next official quarterly drive. However, you don't need to wait until Food Drive Sunday. You can bring food ANYTIME and place the items in the baskets designated for the Food Bank. We will keep a tally and get the items to the food bank on an ongoing basis. We received the following letter from Emma Espy, Director of the Emergency Food Bank: "Dear St Paul's, The Board Members and staff of the Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank would like to offer our "Thanks" for your time, effort and generosity. Your donation of 2,220 items will be used in a manner that will be beneficial to our community in which we serve.
