UUCPA 2010 Auction –

Insider’s Guide to the All-Church Auction
It’s time to catch the spirit of our Fall Madness
and here’s everything you
need to know to get the most out of this fun auction experience.
Be prepared! Review this catalog before the Auction and bring it with you on
Auction night to help you navigate and keep track of what you bid on.
Bring your social calendar! Check the dates on what you bid on.
Bring your checkbook! We really need for you to pay for and receive your
items on Auction night, so we can be a church again on Sunday.
What is the SILENT AUCTION?
In a silent auction, as in a live auction, the highest bid wins each item. But
sometimes items are offered to more than one bidder, so the highest 8 (or 6 or 2,
depending on how many are offered) will be the winners. There’s no auctioneer,
so you have to keep track yourself of what the highest bids are and whether
you’re one of them. You can also bid on lots of items at the same time.
How does it work?
Bids are made by writing your name, your identifying bidder number (get it at the
table in the lobby of the Main Hall), and the amount of your bid on the sheet for
the item you’re interested in, plus how many bids you’re placing, if more than one
is being offered [e.g. 2 bids on a party where 8 people will win]. Someone else
can then place a bid on the next open line. If you need to increase your bid in
order to win the item, write your name, bidder number, and the new, higher bid
on the next empty line. No erasing! Bidding will continue until the announced
closing time, and all writing will stop when the closing bell rings, so if competition
is fierce, stay nearby with pencil in hand as closing time nears.
Silent Auction will close in two stages
The closing bell will ring only twice. The first time, at 7:00 PM, the Fireside Room
and Room 6 will close. These rooms will have the 100’s (Good Things to Eat
and Drink), 200’s (Goods), 300’s (Hand-made Items and Clothing), and 500’s
(Arts). At 7:30 Room 4-5 will close, which has the bid sheets for 700’s (Events
and Outings), 800’s (Meals and Parties), and 900’s (Services)
Best Bets for this Fall
Madness ….
First, stop in the church lobby to sign in, Get Your BIDDER NUMBER /PADDLE.
For the first part of the evening, split your time between intense Silent Auction
bidding in the Fireside Room, Rooms 4-5, and 6, and live entertainment, fun
company, hors d‘oeuvres, desserts, and Raffle Tickets in the Main Hall. Don’t
forget to keep checking on your bids and raising them as needed!
In the second part of the evening, bring your bidder number paddle to the Main
Hall, find a comfortable spot to enjoy the Raffle and Live Auction, and get ready
to bid! Remember that all proceeds go to the church – it’s okay to be a little
extravagant.
After the Live Auction, line up to pay in the Library (behind the office), then
stop by the Fireside Room to pick up any items you won.

In some religions, preachers speak about set texts -- this
particular chapter and verse on this week, every year.
In Unitarian Universalism, preachers choose the texts
they'll speak on. And at UUCPA, you get to choose the
text Amy will preach on. Your favorite book, a quote
you've been pondering, a joke you want everyone to hear
(keep 'em clean): these can be the center of
an upcoming Sunday service -- if you are the top bidder
on this item.

“The Good Life” basket from a UUCPA
Covenant Group

Hey, the recession is over and we’re back to the good
life. Haven’t you heard the news? Here are some items
to help you celebrate, or to console you if your own good
times aren’t quite rollin’ yet. Either way, life can be
good. If you are looking for spiritual sustenance, you
can find inspiration in "The Art of Happiness in a
Troubled World", by the Dalai Lama and Howard
Cutler, M.D. Or you can inspire your taste buds with
some exquisite chocolate from Fran’s Chocolate Shop in
Seattle, a Seattle legend. The good life requires plenty
of coffee or tea, so you’ll find a $25 gift certificate for
Peet’s. While you’re in the neighborhood, you can stop
by Rick’s Ice Cream to use your $40 gift certificate on
some of their wonderful flavors like white chocolate
ginger and rose. Right next door, your $50 gift
certificate from Piazza’s will help you purchase the
ingredients for a feast, which you can savor with a bottle
of champagne. For relaxation, indulge in a soothing
bath with bath soap; bath oil, bath salts, bath confetti
and a candle to set the mood. And, since we all know
that the unexamined life is not worth living, you will
have a journal and a tin of crayons to record your
reflections on the good life.

Week in La Paz
Good Things to Eat and Drink
A charming week at a little vacation home on the Bay of
La Paz, about 10 miles outside of La Paz, on Mexico's
Baja Peninsula. In a quiet residential community.
Comitan has mostly Canadians and Americans, some of
them full-time residents. The house looks right at the
lovely Bay. A good swimming beach and place to
anchor the 3 small sailboats is a 5-minute walk away.
The house has 2 bedrooms, sleeps 6, is furnished with
hand-crafted Mexican furniture (and modern appliances
but no TV). Fly into La Paz or Cabo (SJD, a 3-hour
drive). (Call Pat ot Tom for more details, or Paula
Hillard / Arnold Wilson, who liked it, or Diane MeierPhelps, who didn't ...) It's a perfect place to unwind;
and La Paz, although not a party town, has fun places to
eat and things to see and do. Available anytime except
12/20 - 1/7.

From their yard in Menlo Park, Arnie and Paula will
deliver to you (at church) part of the Bounty from their
fruit trees and garden. All will be hand selected and
picked at the height of flavor. All organic - no
pesticides. Enjoy and share with your friends. Bounty
for the coming year depends on weather, and our aging
and developing trees and garden. For sure, we expect
lots of Fuyu Persimmons (November/December), Eureka
Lemons (Spring/Fall), Santa Rosa Plums (July), and
Tart plums (August). Among our new trees that we
expect to produce are Braeburn and Gala Apple, Asian
Pear, Bing Cherry, Mission and Black Jack Fig, Donut
Peach, Pluot, and Lime. But all is fortuna. Last year
we predicted lots of Bing Cherry from our mature tree.
Poor weather spoiled cherries everywhere on the
Peninsula, and we got maybe twelve ripe cherries. After
a slow start the tomatoes did well: Oxheart, Black
Russian, Sun Sugar, Early Girl, Brandywines. In
addition to the tree bounty we will deliver canned:
Tomatoes, Jams, Conserves, Dried Fruit, etc. (See our
other offerings here). Right now we are planting Chard,
Carrots, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage. We regularly have
Rosemary, Thyme, Sage. We guarantee you will be
pleased, and maybe even surprised: How many quarts
of Horseradish can we send you? By agreement, we
may substitute other garden delights or Arnie’s
homemade breads. Additionally, we include one bottle
of our own Menlo Park Limoncello, 60 proof, 500 ml.
Limoncello, made of lemon zest, is a delicious appertif

Tasting Notes: Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet
Sauvignon is often easily identifiable on first nose as its
aromas of cassis, blackberry, fresh loam and tobacco are
so unique. There is great concentration and structure,
hallmarks of the 2005 vintage. The wine finishes with
bright acidity, youthful “mountain” tannins and great
length. This wine benefits from decanting at present,
and should be an ideal candidate for medium to long

Marjorie Liebert
Minimum Bid $25
This original watercolor by Kay Culpepper, local
painter and watercolor instructor, was done on a windy
spring day on the coast near Pigeon Point lighthouse. It
was painted on site in the manner that the
Impressionists called "plein air". Kay paints in wet
paint on wet paper. This enables the paint to act like the
water that it is painting. The artist must "save" the
white of the paper for whites and lighter hues. This
painting is predominantly varying shades of the blue
water, earth-toned rocky cliffs in the foreground, and
spring greens near the lighthouse in the distance. There
is a lot of "white water" in the breakers and waves,
spring storm clouds, etc. (Market value: $200 - $500).

#1 selects a gift, which is unwrapped and displayed to
the group. #2 then may choose that gift or another. If a
later player chooses the gift you had chosen, you choose
another wrapped or unwrapped gift and so forth. #10

Life Sciences Hike, Saturday, April 30th,
9:30 A.M.
Learn about wilderness at Rancho San Antonio Open
Space Preserve with Donna, a Deer Hollow Farm
docent. The walk and talk follows the state curriculum
for 2nd to 4th grade, but is interesting for all ages. We
will hike for about 2 hours, stopping to observe any
wildlife. We often see quail, jays, squirrels, bunnies,
hawks, woodpeckers, vultures, turkeys and deer. We
will define "habitat", "adaptation", "animal survival
techniques", "seeds and plants", and the "food chain".
After a one-mile hike into the park, our exploration will
cover less than 2 miles over the farm bypass trail, and
will include a chance to see the Nature Center. Please
park at the public parking area (where there is a modern
rest room). Then walk into the park to the docent
parking lot where Donna will meet you at 9:30 am.
After the hike, she will provide a picnic lunch at the big

A Pocket Full of Love ("Elixir of Love"),
Sun Feb 27, matinee
Handel is best known for his oratorios, but he also wrote
over 40 operas including this year’s offering,
"Ariodante". In a classical performance, the 7 singers
would pretty much stand in one place as they sang the
gorgeous arias, duets, etc., and the complex plot would
be carried forward with interminable recitatives. Well,
Donald Pippin and his Pocket Opera do it differently.
We still get all of the beautiful Handel music
accompanied by an eight-piece orchestra plus
harpsichord. But instead of recitatives, we get Donald
Pippin’s droll commentary on this tale of love and
treachery in Ancient Scotland. Each winning bid
entitles you to 1 ticket to Handel’s Ariodante and 1 seat
in a Prius or Camry to get you there and back.

Night Hike at Long Ridge: Sundown at the
Wallace Stegner Bench, Friday, May 13,
2011 6:15 to 10:30 PM (on the trail)
When was the last time you were out in the wilds on
foot after dark? Join Kat Greene and Jack Owicki for a
magical evening hiking at Long Ridge Open Space
Preserve off Skyline Drive. We’ll walk around four
miles at an easy pace through grassland and forest,
stopping for dinner at the Wallace Stegner bench for a
beautiful view to the west at sunset. You bring your
own dinner, but we provide the dessert. We might see
night critters like owls, bats, and the endangered redlegged frog. If you wish, you’ll have a chance to
experience a solitary ten-minute night walk along one
part of the forest trail. A docent-guided hike (Kat and
Jack are docents) is the only way to walk on one of the
Midpeninsula Regional Open Space preserves at night,
so this is an unusual opportunity. We’ll contact the
winners with further details about what to bring, where
to meet, etc. Suitable for anyone over 8, if you enjoy
walking and being in the outdoors.

Spend a fun and relaxing evening with Philip in the
luxurious penthouse at Tan Plaza apartments. We will
read “The Admirable Crichton” by James Barrie, eat
Chicago Pizza (with or without meat), and drink beer
(real, root, or ginger). The English Butler is a stock
figure in early twentieth century drama and fiction, and
J. M. Barrie's Crichton is the acme of all English
butlers. He is firmly convinced of the merits of the rigid
English caste system of a century ago: "There must
always be a master and servants in all civilized
communities, for it is natural, and whatever is natural is
right." Be part of the action as this philosophy plays
itself out in an English country manor and on a deserted
habitable island. (Juiciest parts just might go to the
highest bidder…)

PM
The evening will start with conversation and dinner at
the Owickis’ home. Then it’s off to "The 39 Steps", a
hilarious, high-speed spoof of Alfred Hitchcock ’s
classics. This irresistible Broadway smash hurtles a
notorious fugitive and a spellbound blonde from a
London music hall north by northwest to Scotland ’s
most remote highlands. Will they save Britain from a
den of devious spies? An ingenious homage to the
master’s greatest films, it creates trains, planes, moors,
and more in a wildly funny flight to the heights of
theatrical invention. (Ticket value -- $44 each).
