ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION *** NOTE: The 1/2 hp 12 volt DC drive motor will draw 30 - 90 amps. Confirm that the vehicle charging system is capable of producing adequate power to run the sander. If necessary, upgrade alternator to handle the load. 1. Locate the electrical components shown on the wiring diagram. 2. Use (2) self tapping screws to mount the circuit breaker in the vehicle’s engine compartment within 16” of the battery positive terminal. Be sure to ground the component to the truck at the mounting screw. *** NOTE: Mount the circuit breaker so that the terminal marked “BAT” is closest to the battery positive terminal. 3. Use (2) self tapping screws, attach the solenoid in the vehicle’s engine compartment within 16” of the circuit breaker previously installed Be sure to ground the component to the truck at the mounting screw. 4. Select the provided 16 inch length of #6 red wire and connect it to the circuit breaker terminal marked “AUX” (load side) and to the solenoid large terminal closest to the solenoid small terminal. 5. Select the (2) 9 ft. lengths of #16 wire (1 red, 1 black) and thread both pieces through an appropriate hole in the vehicle firewall so that one end of each is near the solenoid and the ends with the small terminal connectors are near the desired in-cab switch location. (install grommet for abrasion protection). 6. Determine an accessible location on dash for mounting the switch and drill a 1/2” diameter hole or use an existing hole. (Do not install at this time.) DASH Use existing hole or drill 1/2” dia. hole PUSH / PULL SWITCH 7. If optional speed control and spinner motor is added, see wiring harness below. MAINTENANCE(continued) Gear Lubrication 1. Use gear lube EP 80-90 weight oil. Fill the unit to the level plug. 2. Check the lubricant level before the unit is put into service. 3. Prior to storage at end of season, replace lube and grease all points shown below. MAINTENANCE (contd) B. BATTERY There are 2 possible battery styles that may be used in DownEaster salt and sand spreaders. Although the batteries are functionally equivalent, they are sized differently. Because of the different size, they will mount differently. You can easily identify which battery fits a sander. Sanders that accept the larger battery have two threaded posts to hold the battery in place. The smaller Battery fits between the threaded posts. Secure the battery in place using the hold-down bracket and connect the red battery cable to the positive terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal. The larger Battery fits in the tray located beneath the motor mount. The battery must be placed on it's "side" in the tray with the posts facing the rear. Connect the red battery cable to the positive terminal and then slide battery into the tray. Next, connect the black cable to the negative terminal. 9A DownEaster mfd by COASTAL METAL FAB V. OPERATION A. PRE STARTING CHECKS 1. Lubricate conveyor and spinner as per maintenance schedule. (see sh. 10) 2. Check tension adjustments on conveyor, spinner, and gearbox chains. (see sh. 12) 3. Visually inspect the complete spreader for damage or loose fastenings. 4. Set hopper gate to desired feed rate. 5. Set chute flap adjustments to desired pattern. !WARNING: Never adjust internal or external spinner deflectors while spinner is in operation. B. SPREADER OPERATION 1. Engage push/pull switch to begin conveyor and spinner operation. (fig. A) *** NOTE: Do not run sander unless vehicle engine is running. Failure to do so may result in a discharged (dead) battery. C. SPINNER CONTROL (Optional) 1. If the optional speed controller is being used, adjust the knob to the desired speed of the spinner and turn on toggle switch. (fig.B) 2. Blast, is used for a momentary burst of the spinner, when only a couple of seconds are required. FIG. B FIG. Adjustments To adjust flow of material, Loosen knob and raise handle to decrease flow or lower handle to increase flow. When proper adjustment is made re-tighten knob. “Decrease flow” knob A) Feed gate adjustment Install salt flap as shown (optional) “Increase flow” B. Conveyor chain tension adjustment The Conveyor chain is correctly adjusted when, under hand -pressure deflection, there is 1/8” of flex from side to side. 1) Loosen locking nut start with a couple turns “Both sides equal turns” 2) Turn out adjusting nut “Both sides equal turns” 3) Re-tighten locking nut 1/8” “Both sides equal turns” 11 DownEaster mfd by COASTAL METAL FAB C. Flap Adjustments External flaps can be used to allow the flow of material to be fine tuned to the disired pattern. To adjust the flaps, loosen hinge locknuts, adjust and retighten. All external flaps “Full down position” About equal, “A little heavier on Road side”. Tight Pattern Vehicle Direction Road side flap & rear flap “full UP position” Heavy “ROAD SIDE” Curb side flap & rear flap “full up position” Heavy “CURB SIDE” 12 DownEaster mfd by COASTAL METAL FAB D. Baffle Adjustments Internal Baffles can be used to direct the flow of material so it’s heavier on the road side or the curb side. To adjust the baffles, pull out the loop handle and drop into the position holes that best suit your needs. Full UP position puts baffle completely into flow of material Full DOWN position puts baffle completely out of flow of material Both Internal Baffles “Full down position” About equal, “A little heavier on Road side”. Tight Pattern Vehicle Direction Road Side Internal Baffle “full UP position” Heavy “ROAD SIDE” Curb Side Inside Baffle “full UP position” Heavy “CURB SIDE” 13 DownEaster mfd by COASTAL METAL FAB .VII. SHUT DOWN & STORAGE A. STOPPING THE SPREADER 1. Switch the control switch to the “off” position. *** NOTE: Do not allow the contents of the hopper to freeze solid by standing without operating the spreader for long periods during below freezing air temperatures. If this should occur, do not attempt to operate the spreader. Move the spreader to a warm location and allow the hopper contents to thaw before operating the spreader. Failure to observe these precautions may result in damage to the equipment. B..PREPARING THE SPREADER FOR STORAGE 1. Repair or replace all worn or damaged parts. 2. Wash the spreader to remove all residue and salt, especially in the hopper. 3. Lubricate all grease fittings and chains. 4. Prepare an area to store the spreader where it will be stable, off the ground, in a dry, protected place. If stored outdoors, cover the spreader with a waterproof tarp. REMOVING THE SPREADER FROM STORAGE C. 1. Check oil level in the gearbox and refill if necessary. 2. Make sure that all shields and guards are in place before starting motor. 14 DownEaster mfd by COASTAL METAL FAB FILLING HOPPER When loading material, Center Bucket over hopper so material drops proportionately. Do not overfill 1) Make sure screen is secure prior to filling. 2) Check hopper and remove any debris. 3) Fill hopper until level with top of hopper. DO NOT overfill hopper. Overfilling may cause load to be top heavy. Vehicle Requirements 3/4 or 1ton Pickup above 8500# GVWR. WARNING: Never load hopper without screen in place Failure to do so may damage spreader and will void warranty. 15 DownEaster mfd by COASTAL METAL FAB Coastal Metal Fab, Inc.
