cuted a sophisticated
group of drug smugglers and money-launderers that
had successfully gained access into Texas, North

The investigation and apprehension of these smugglers eventually led to the exposure of Noriega as a

Leadership Carteret 2016 starts January 12 & 13
The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce
continues to accept applications for the Leadership
Carteret 2016 program.
“This is an ideal investment for newcomers to the
county, for individuals who desire to become more
involved in civic affairs and those who aspire to
become community leaders,” said Susan McNamara
of the Chamber.
The Leadership Carteret Kickoff Reception is
at 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, at Chamber headquarters, and the class will meet for 10 consecutive
Wednesdays, from January 13-March 16.
“Participants will learn all about the history of the
county and the present-day issues that are important to the Chamber and our communities,” she said.
“Class members learn from business leaders, decision makers and key government leaders.
“We visit places off the beaten path and behind the
scenes, in order to give the participants an experience they will never forget.”
Tuition is $415 for Chamber members and $525 for others. The class is limited to 35 participants.
To inquire about an application form, contact Susan McNamara at (252) 726-6350 or [email protected]. The application deadline is Friday, November 20.

“One And Done: Celebration!”
is the theme for the 2015 Fall
Membership Campaign at the
Carteret County Chamber of
Commerce.
“If each campaign volunteer
recruits just one new member
between October 19-30, we will be
successful,” said Julie Naegelen,
who is the Chamber’s Director,
Membership Services.
“The more participants the
better. Simply invite people you
know and do business with to join
the Chamber.
“We can help you show prospective members ‘16
good reasons’ why it pays off to be a Chamber member.”
“The Chamber speaks as the ‘Voice of Business’
on important issues and advocates a pro-business
legislative agenda,” Naegelen said. “Additionally,
each and every Chamber function
presents you with networking
opportunities to make new business contacts.
“Membership is a low-cost
investment that can lead to greater exposure and visibility for any
business, no matter how large
or how small. The Chamber is
the one organization in Carteret
County that promotes business
interests in all our communities.”
All who join during the campaign will be recognized at a New
Members Reception, beginning
at 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, in the Chamber
Conference Room, 801 Arendell St., Morehead City.

Cousins Bed and Breakfast

Think Cousins Bed and Breakfast in Beaufort.
Think Cousin Martha’s Collection of Art, Spices
and Gifts in Beaufort.
“We offer a variety of services,” say the innkeepers, Martha and Elmo Barnes. Cousins Bed and
Breakfast offers southern hospitality, great breakfasts
and lots of stories related by Martha and Elmo.
“If our bed and breakfast guests need gluten free,
we offer that in our breakfast, as well as catering
additionally to whatever dietary needs they may
have.” Elmo’s spices trademark name, “Satan’s
Breath,” comes in a variety of flavors…specializing
in “hot” but not limited to “hot.”
His spices have won him awards, and his recipes
have won him a cooking spot on PBS. When he sells
you a spice, he will also give you one of his recipes
to try. The spices do not contain MSG and only a
few of them contain salt.
“He mixes them here in his kitchen, and also
offers you samples to taste or smell so you can
decide which to buy,” Martha says. “If you are
allergic to some ingredient, he will work with you
to omit that from the spice formula. In addition to
his spices, he makes great hot peanuts. If you need
a gift of spices, coffee or peanuts, we will ship them
for you.
“If you would like to offer someone a gift certificate to stay at the Bed and Breakfast, we can handle
that for you. The Art Gallery at Cousin Martha’s
offers art by Michael Nardozzi and jewelry by Kim
Hocutt.
“We laughingly say that we are the only bed and
breakfast where you may shop in your nightgown or
PJs (but best done while the other guests are sleeping).”

Chamber presents Skilled Trades Professional Awards
Each year since 2005, the Carteret County Chamber of
Commerce has saluted men and women in the county who
“work with their hands and their heads” to make things
better.
They are the “Skilled Trades Professionals of the Year.”
The 2015 award winners are Sherman Walton of
Carteret Health Care in Morehead City and Mary
Sherwood of Creative Wood in Newport.
“They are the ‘sure thing’ when it comes to doing their
jobs with professionalism to satisfy their customers,”
said Kerry Youngblood, Chair of the Chamber’s Board of
Directors.
Dr. Youngblood, who is President of Carteret
Community College, began his career as a certified welder and remains a vocal proponent of vocational education.
“Skilled trades jobs cannot be out-sourced. They are
critical to all sectors of our local economy. Skilled trades
professionals make an enormous contribution to our society, and trades professionals and craftsmen/craftswomen
are compensated well.”
Sherman Walton has been employed for more than
19 years as a plumber at Carteret Health Care (formerly
Carteret General Hospital). He’s a 200 percent kind of
guy, says Tye Frost, Director of Engineering at Carteret
Health Care.
“Sherman is a super plumber…but much more. He has
taken on additional responsibilities and has learned the
facilities’ infrastructure – electrical plant, fire alarm system, sprinkler system, chill water plant operations, boiler
plant operations and HVAC for the entire setting, including the Operating Room and clean rooms. He can rebuild
any piece of equipment…nothing is beyond his abilities,”
Frost said.
“Sherman’s goal is to deliver support to the staff, giv-

said the Chamber’s Julie Naegelen.
“And then, we will celebrate the holiday season
Tuesday, December 1, at DoubleTree by Hilton
Atlantic Beach Oceanfront Hotel in Atlantic Beach.”
Those who pay in advance at Chamber headquarters, 801 Arendell St., Morehead City, will have their

Frost said. “Sherman always gets the job done. Staff and

Nominations invited for
major awards
The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce is

awards – the Arnold Murray Small Business Person
of the Year Award and for the Joan Huss Pulley
Award for Public Service.
Separate nomination forms are required and are
now available at the Chamber, 801 Arendell St.,
Morehead City. For information, call 726-6350 or
go to www.nccoastchamber.com. The deadline for
nominations is Friday, December 4.
“Our Chamber has been honoring the Small
Business Person of the Year since 1990,” said Chair
Kerry Youngblood. “This award goes to a small
business owner who has made extraordinary contributions to the community. Only Chamber members
are eligible.”
The Joan Huss Pulley Award is sponsored by Duke
Energy. It is not necessary for the nominee to be a

Mary took advantage of the free training workshops
and seminars offered in the evenings through the Carteret
Community College Small Business Center to learn how
to improve her business.
“Her dedication and drive to succeed epitomize what
small business is all about,” Hanson said. “She’s the best
there is at furniture refinishing, but Mary also creates
beautiful and practical wooden bowls and other artistic
creations out of wood that make great gifts. You will see
her supporting local home and garden shows or festivals
as a vendor.
“In her personal life, Mary devotes what spare time she
has to local ministry by delivering meals to shut-ins and
teaching soap making to those in recovery. She makes us
proud,” Hanson concluded.
Debbie Fisher is
Ambassador of the Month
The Ambassador of the Month for
August at the Carteret County Chamber
of Commerce is Debbie Fisher, who is a
Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics
as well as owner of Office Fusion
Solutions and the Professional Business
Center.
“Ambassadors are awarded points each month for carrying out their assorted duties,” said Julie Naegelen, who
is the Chamber’s staff liaison to the Ambassadors Club.
“Debbie works hard to represent the Chamber out in the
community, and she faithfully makes dozens of one-onone contacts with fellow Chamber members each month.
We treasure her dedication, the assistance she provides to
others and her ability to persuade Chamber members to
participate in the various Chamber events and programs.
“She attends almost all Chamber Ribbon Cutting
Ceremonies and Business After Hours functions.
“Remarkably, this is the 36th time that Debbie has
earned the Ambassador of the Month title since 2006, and
she has been the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Year for
six of the past seven years. She is also a member of the
Chamber’s Board of Directors.
To inquire about becoming a Chamber Ambassador,
contact Julie Naegelen at 726-6350 or [email protected].

The Board of Directors

threats to the coastal environment of North Carolina, due
to the potential for pollution and other harmful effects to
marine mammals, turtles, fish, migratory birds and other
aquatic life.”
The Chamber’s Resolution states: “Economic sustainability of Carteret County is directly dependent on visitors
who come from all over the world to enjoy the natural
beauty of our clean Crystal Coast beaches, to visit the
undisturbed wilderness area of Cape Lookout National
Seashore and to explore the sounds, marshes, wetlands,
estuaries, rivers, creeks and streams that abound in
Carteret County.”
“Many of these natural areas provide sanctuary and
nesting/breeding grounds for diverse groups of wildlife,
having intrinsic ecological value.
“Our coastal waters are prime commercial and recreational fisheries, and coastal natural habitats provide
the world with some of the best wild-caught seafood,
renowned for its freshness and exceptional quality.”

“Estimated revenues from offshore drilling and the
benefits to the State of North Carolina pale in comparison
to the proven and anticipated growth of revenues that are
directly attributed to coastal North Carolina’s tourism and
fishing industries.
“The inherent serious risks to our region from offshore
oil and gas exploration and drilling have the potential to
irrevocably harm and destroy our natural environment, our
economic well-being, our overall quality of life and the
health and safety of residents and visitors,” the Chamber’s
Resolution stated.
The Chamber believes that “the commercial petroleum
industry, to include drilling, extraction, collection and
transportation of offshore oil and gas resources, is neither
complementary nor compatible with Carteret County’s
water-based economy.”
