about to start and, precious vacation time
is running out. You still have time to drive
to the west coast of Florida, head south to
the Keys or take a puddle jumper to the
Caribbean. I was just a guest at a lovely little
boutique hotel on the Mayan Riviera and
it could be just the place to spend your last
few lazy days of summer. I’ll tell you more
about it later in the issue.
We are gearing up for the annual Back
to School Bash in Miami on August 28,
which we partner on with the Pinecrest
Community Center. This year, in addition
to entertainment and activities, we are
introducing a School Clothes Sale & Swap.
This is a great opportunity to clean out
closets and recycle clothes and items, which
your child has outgrown or discarded but
are still in good condition, and may be very
useable for someone else. You may sell them
on consignment or donate them for a swap
to benefit Pinecrest Community Center.

Ceiba del Mar: A Hidden Gem on the Mayan Riviera
you would like it to be in the daytime when you
can swim, snorkel, dive, fish, kayak, zipline, or
swim with the dolphins or whale sharks.
Ceiba del Mar, calm as it seems, has all the
amenities of the modern day world, all the latest

Last week I was kissed by the Mayan Riviera and Montezuma had nothing to do with
it. I was invited to Puerto Morelos, Mexico
as a guest of Ceiba del Mar resort, but never
expected to fall in love.
Ceiba del Mar is a small boutique resort only
twenty minutes from the Cancun airport, but
once you arrive there, you’d think you were in
a secret hideaway. You’ll think you’re dreaming
when you look at the snowy white haciendas or
the aquamarine blue ocean lapping at the sandy
beach. The fully attentive service of the staff

It’s Mexican hospitality at it’s best.
Morelos is a sleepy little fishing village
sitting between Cancun and Tulum on the

life here consists of listening to crickets and

With families traveling and back-to-school time looming, there aren’t a ton of
family movies in theaters in August. But one that’s definitely worth seeing is the
sequel to ‘Nanny McPhee,’ starring, the always excellent Emma Thompson, who
also wrote the screenplay. Here’s the rundown of what’s new in theaters for August.
STEP UP 3D
NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS
PG-13 for brief strong language. In theaters 8/6. Ok for kids 13+.
Rated PG for rude humor, some crude language and mild thematic
elements. In theaters 8/20. Ok for kids 9+.
New York’s intense
street dancing
underground comes
alive in 3D in this
third installment
of the “Step Up”
franchise. A tightknit group of street
dancers, including
Luke (Rick Malambri)
and Natalie (Sharni
Vinson), team up
with NYU freshman Moose (Adam Sevani), and find themselves
pitted against the world’s best break dancers in a high-stakes
showdown. There’s not much you can do with a dance movie that
hasn’t already been done. There’s usually plenty of angst, drama
and a big dance-off at the end, which the hero of the story usually
wins! My favorite of this series is the original 2006 film starring
Channing Tatum, but if you love dancing or dance movies, this is
a worthwhile installment in 3D.
In this sequel to the popular 2005 film,
Emma Thompson returns to the role of
the magical nanny who appears when
she’s needed the most and wanted
the least. And she’s definitely needed
at the home of a harried young mom,
Mrs. Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal),
who’s trying to run the family farm
while her husband is away at war.
But once she arrives, Nanny McPhee
discovers that Mrs. Green’s children
are fighting a war of their own against
two spoiled city cousins who’ve moved
in and refuse to leave. My kids and I
loved the first movie, and this one looks
just as good, complete with a flying
motorcycle, a statue that comes to life, a tree-climbing pig, and a
baby elephant that turns up in the oddest places. Also stars Maggie
Smith and Ralph Fiennes.
EAT PRAY LOVE
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
Rated PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and
male rear nudity. In theaters 6/13. Ok for kids 13+.
Rated PG-13 for stylized violence, sexual content, crude language
and drug references. In theaters 6/13. Ok for kids 13+.
Directed by Ryan Murphy (who helms
‘Glee’), this movie is based on the
popular memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert,
played by Julia Roberts in the movie.
She has everything a modern woman
is supposed to want: a husband, a
house, and a successful career. Still,
she’s lost, confused, and searching
for meaning in life. Newly divorced,
she steps out of her comfort zone on a
quest for self-discovery that takes her
to Italy, India and Bali. I finally read
this book last year, and while it took
me a while to get into it, I was sold by
the end. Julia Roberts is the perfect actress to play Gilbert, and
the movie also stars James Franco, Javier Bardem, Viola Davis,
Billy Crudup and Richard Jenkins.
Michael Cera has built his career
on the same sort of lovably pathetic
character he played in ‘Arrested
Development,’ ‘Superbad,’ and ‘Juno.’
He does it again in this movie, in which
he plays Scott Pilgrim, a guy who
must defeat his new girlfriend’s (Mary
Elizabeth Winstead) evil exes in order
to win her heart. As you might imagine,
he’s not at all up to the challenge, so
much hilarity ensues as he does it in
comic book fashion. In some ways, I
wish Cera would bust out of his usual
roles, and he sort of does that here,
coming up against everyone from an
infamous skateboarder to a vegan rock star to identical twins. It’s
good for a few laughs.

A NEW WAVE OF EXOTIC LIONFISH INVADES
BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK
GENEROUS DONATION PROVIDES A NEW LOOK FOR

Almost a year after the
first Indo-Pacific lionfish was
discovered and removed from
Biscayne National Park, over 40
additional fish have been reported
and removed in the past two
weeks. Lionfish are invasive, exotic
animals with few natural predators
in Atlantic waters (other than
humans, who find them a tasty
meal-search facebook: eat the
lionfish) that feed voraciously on
native fish, especially members of
the snapper and grouper families. Most of the fish discovered recently
are fairly small in size, between 2 and 5 inches.
After the initial lionfish sighting in June, 2009, new reports were rare and
sporadic. The recent National Geographic BioBlitz, a 24-hour species count
involving hundreds of citizen scientists documenting plants and animals in the park,
failed to turn up a single lionfish, despite expectations that many might be found.
These recent sightings have occurred in many parts of the Park in addition to reef
areas, including wrecks, seagrass beds, hardbottom communities and around dock
pilings. As many as 17 lionfish have been removed from a single site.
The Park is calling on the Park’s users to assist with the effort by capturing and
reporting any lionfish they encounter while enjoying the Park. The mane-like
assemblage of spines that give the fish its lion-like appearance are tipped in
poison that can cause severe pain, swelling, nausea, headaches and convulsions.
If a visitor cannot safely remove the fish themselves, they are encouraged to note
its location as precisely as possible (including GPS coordinates) and report the
sighting to the Park as soon as possible. Lionfish are quite territorial, and will
remain in the same area for extended periods. They are also generally unafraid
of divers, which makes them fairly easy to capture by spearing, netting or luring
them into a plastic bag. Sightings may be reported by calling the Park’s Visitor

Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital recently held a ribbon cutting
ceremony to unveil a newly upgraded hematology/oncology playroom. The
upgrades, which include a flat-screen television, a DVD player, furniture, and a
variety of video and board games as well as arts & crafts supplies, were made
possible through a $10,000 donation to the Broward Health Foundation from
the Grainger Foundation in support of its mission to provide family-centered
care for newborns, neonates, children, and youth.
This donation was recommended by David Maintainer, Branch Manager of
W.W. Grainger, Inc.’s Pompano Beach location. Grainger has been a part of
the Fort Lauderdale business community for more than 50 years as the leading
broad line supplier of maintenance, repair, and operating products. “We
understand the need to support the children and families who are afflicted
with serious illness,” said Maintainer.
INDIAN RIVER CO. EDUCATOR NAMED TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Cheryl Conley, 4th Grade General Education Teacher from Osceola Magnet
Elementary School in Indian River Co., was named the 2011 Macy’s/Florida
Department of Education Teacher of the Year
at the awards gala, which was held at Hard Rock Live in Universal Studios
Orlando. This marks the 22nd year of Macy’s sponsorship of the Florida Teacher
of the Year program. The Macy’s Foundation presented Cheryl Conley with a check
totaling $10,000, a $1,000 check for her school, a $1,000 Macy’s wardrobe,
and an all-expense paid trip for 4 to New York City to attend this year’s Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade. In May, the Macy’s Foundation awarded $5,000, and a $500 Macy’s
Gift Card, along with a $1,000

Media Psychology for Moms:
Six Tips for Gaining and Maintaining Control of Your Family’s Media Usage
Media Psychology is a relatively new
field that studies the impact that media has
on our behavior. With new technologies
appearing almost daily and media usage
at an all time high, this concept has never
been more important. As the mother of two
young children, I am feeling the impact of
our ever-expanding media influence most in
my role as a mother, which is why I wanted
to take on a new role….that of Media
Psychology Mom. Understanding media used to be
straightforward. Media is defined as a
means of communication that reaches and
influences people widely. Radio, television
and newspapers—the media that we grew
up with—are now considered traditional
media. Cable television entered the mix and
greatly influenced our television viewing
habits and also complicated what parents
needed to monitor. But ultimately, it was
still pretty simple. You could unplug the
television, block pay per view channels and
cancel MTV with its racy music videos. But the media landscape has become very
crowded as of late. And while the power
of traditional media is still strongly felt in
our society and worthy of study, it is the
new mediums that are the most impactful
on our children. This “new media”
consists of digital, computerized and
networked information and communication
technologies. A friend of mine recently attended
orientation for parents of new high school
students and was informed that if she didn’t
already have a Facebook, Myspace and/
or Twitter account, that she was probably
already so far behind her teenage son in his
use of new media that she would probably
never catch up. It is a school mandate that
my 4th grade son have his own laptop. Half
the children that ride the school bus with
my daughter have cell phones. What is
going on around here?
Access to all the different technological
gadgets and programs available today
requires that we, as parents, make an
entirely new set of rules. We used to make
and enforce curfews and warn our children
not to talk to strangers. Now we have to
forbid our children to text at the dinner
table, and consider how often they can use
their cell phones when grounded. And as
for strangers? That is one of the scariest
aspects of this technological age-the access
that strangers have to information about our
children. It is indeed a whole new world.

So what’s a parent to do? You must be
active and involved in the lives of your
children. You must be vigilant and you
must be educated. The tips below may
seem like they are only appropriate for
older children, but trust me on this…even
children as young as kindergarten age are
amazingly tech savvy these days. Begin
the discussion of responsible technology
usage with them early. Here are a few tips
to keep you in control of the media that
your children use:
Set up your own accounts on social
networking sites. It is not okay to
say “I just don’t get it.” You need to
understand these applications and speak
the “language” that your children use
to speak about and on these sites. Most
are free and you can set up an account
for yourself in a matter of minutes. Then
explore a little and surf around the sites. Once your accounts are set up, ask your
children what they like about them, why
they “follow” certain people on Twitter
or choose certain people to befriend on
Facebook. Share with them interesting
things you found or people you think are
worth keeping up with. This will serve
a dual purpose. It will let your children
know that you are up to date on this
trend and it will also open up an entire
new topic for discussion. Try not to judge
(unless absolutely necessary) at this
point. You are trying to open the lines of
communication, not nullify them. Insist that your children provide you
with usernames and passwords for their
accounts. Log onto their accounts on a
regular basis and see what topics are
being discussed. Click on friends’ pages,
pages of parents that your children spend
time with, etc. You will quickly be able
to determine if there are trouble spots
and you can address them head on. Your
children may see this as an invasion of
their privacy, but reassure them that
your concern is their safety and that you
respect them.
Declare tech free family days. And stick
to it yourself! If you declare a tech-free day
then you can not check e-mail or respond
to your blackberry every time it buzzes.
Continue to encourage healthy activities
and outdoor time for your children. Don’t fall into a pattern of noncommunication with your children.
Children everywhere seem to have
their noses buried in their cell phones
these days texting away. Limit texting
time and make clear that there are times
that it is inappropriate (such as at the
dinner table). Use texting capabilities to
your advantage by insisting that it be a
primary way that you can keep in touch
with them. And surprise them every
once in awhile. Send them a text just to
let them know that you love them and
are proud of them. They will claim it
is horribly embarrassing, but they will
actually be glad to know you care.
As Media Psychology Mom, I want to
serve as a resource for parents and foster
an open discussion of media’s (both new
and traditional) impact. It is a fascinating
topic and one that is changing the way
that we all work, play, live, love, laugh
and, of course, parent. I hope you will join

PSAT/NMSQT

If you are the parent of a high school student who
intends to go on to college, you’ve likely heard about the
SAT and the ACT college entrance exams before, but
what about the PSAT/NMSQT? Here’s everything you
need to know about why your teen should take the PSAT,
what the NMSQT is and how to prepare.
What is the PSAT/NMSQT?
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test is cosponsored by the College Board (www.
collegeboard.com) and the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (www.nationalmerit.org). It is a practice
SAT designed to help students get a feel for the actual
exam. Although PSAT scores have no impact on college
admissions, the PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for
entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program.
What is the National Merit Scholarship?
The National Merit Scholarship Program awards
scholarships to approximately 8,200 students annually
by screening the 1.5 million students who take the PSAT/
NMSQT every year. The three types of awards are:
• National Merit $2,500 scholarships
• Corporate-sponsored Merit scholarships
• College-sponsored Merit scholarships
In addition, each year, the program awards approximately
1,500 Special Scholarships sponsored by business
organizations and corporations.
When is the PSAT/NMSQT and how can my teen sign up?
The 2010 PSAT/NMSQT dates are Wednesday, October
13 and Saturday, October 16. The test is administered by
high schools only (not testing centers). Also, your student
must sign up at his or her high school (or one nearby),
as online registration is not available. Each high school
chooses only one of the October dates.
What year should my teen take the PSAT/NMSQT?
Students may take the exam sophomore year if they wish;
however, it is most beneficial to take the exam junior year.
Also, your teen must be a junior for his or her score to be
used to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.
How can my teen prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT?
Preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT is similar to preparing
for the SAT. Your teen should do several full-length
practice tests, get familiar with the different types of exam
questions, and learn useful test-taking strategies. Your
teen may benefit greatly from a customized PSAT and/or
SAT prep program, especially if he or she plans on taking
the SAT in December or January of junior year.
What else is important to know?
When your teen registers for the PSAT/NMSQT, he or she
can participate in the Student Search Service, which lets
colleges, universities and financial aid and scholarship
programs know that your teen would like to learn more
about them. This is a free service that allows your teen to
receive information about institutions of which he or she
might not be aware.
